Abstract
A process for producing a flame-retardant polyester comprises the following steps: A chain-forming monomer (A) is reacted with a phosphorus-containing polyester (B) and an at least difunctional alcohol (C), the reaction being carried out at a temperature at which alcoholysis of the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) takes place. The phosphorus-containing polyester (B) can be obtained by polycondensation of phosphorus-containing monomers (B1) with ester-forming monomers (B2), where the phosphorus-containing monomer (B1) is selected from the addition products of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha- phenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and ring-substituted DOPO derivatives to unsaturated compounds from the group of monobasic and polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides. The ester-forming monomer (B2) is selected from the group consisting of mono- and polyhydric alcohols, mono- and polybasic carboxylic acids, and mixtures thereof. The flame-retardant polyester is then produced from the reaction mixture, the flame-retardant polyester having units composed of the chain-forming monomer (A), the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) and the at least difunctional alcohol (C).
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing a flame-retardant polyester.
Flame retardant thermoplastic polymers can be obtained by adding non-reactive flame retardants, which can be incorporated into a base polymer by simple physical mixing or dissolving. In contrast, the production of flame-retardant thermoplastic polymers with reactive flame retardants, i.e. thermoplastic polymers in which the flame retardant is built into the base polymer, always requires at least one or more chemical process steps, which are usually already carried out during the production of the base polymer.
Non-reactive flame retardants allow a so-called "late addition" process, in which the flame retardant is added to the base polymer shortly before processing, usually during an extrusion process, for example as a masterbatch. On the other hand, such a procedure is not normally possible when using reactive flame retardants, since these enter into a chemical reaction with the base polymer and in most cases cause polymer degradation under the temperature and pressure conditions prevailing during extrusion.
A whole series of non-reactive, halogen-free flame retardants have long been in technical use for the production of flame-retardant polyamides. Compared to the halogen-containing flame retardants, these have both process engineering and human and ecotoxicological advantages.

These phosphorus-containing polyesters are obtained by polycondensation of phosphorus-containing monomers with ester-forming monomers. The phosphorus-containing monomers are made from the addition products of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha-phenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and ring-substituted DOPO derivatives with unsaturated compounds from the group of monobasic and polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides selected.
However, in contrast to polyamide, for example, it is advantageous, especially in the production of flame-retardant polyester, not only to add the phosphorus-containing ester-forming monomer as a non-reactive flame retardant in polymerized form according to formula (I) in the extrusion process of a spinning mass, but to add it directly in the polycondensation process during production of the polyester as a reactive comonomer in the polyester chains, since addition during extrusion can lead to chain degradation.

In addition to the tendency to gray, the prolonged reaction procedure when adding comonomers of the formula (II) is problematic.
For the synthesis of flame-retardant polyesters, preferably polyethylene terephthalate, the monoethylene glycol diester of the DOPO-itaconic acid adduct is used as a monomer, for example. This monomer is available, for example, under the name “Ukanol™ ES” from Schill + Seilacher, Boeblingen. The active content of this commercial product is approx. 65%. The remainder is monoethylene glycol (MEG) as a solvent, which serves to obtain a liquid product.
The use of the liquid diluted comonomer has various disadvantages due to the solvent. The active content is relatively low at around 65%, so that free solvent is reintroduced into the polymerization process by adding the diluted comonomer at a relatively late point in the manufacturing process. This leads to an increase in the polymerization time. In addition, the solvent, in this case MEG, can generate oxidation products during storage, which in turn can have a reducing and/or deactivating effect on the catalysts and additives used in the polymerization. This also leads to a lengthening of the polymerization time and possibly to an undesirable change in the color of the polyester.
The object of the invention is to provide a method for producing a flame-retardant polyester which, in particular, has shorter polymerization times.
The object is achieved by a process for producing a flame-retardant polyester, comprising the following steps: A chain-forming monomer (A) is reacted with a phosphorus-containing polyester (B) and an at least difunctional alcohol (C), the reaction being carried out at one temperature , in which an alcoholysis of the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) takes place. The phosphorus-containing polyester (B) can be obtained by polycondensation of phosphorus-containing monomers (B1) with ester-forming monomers (B2), where the phosphorus-containing monomer (B1) is selected from the addition products of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DOPO) and ring-substituted DOPO derivatives of unsaturated compounds from the group of monobasic and polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides. The ester-forming monomer (B2) is selected from the group consisting of mono- and polyhydric alcohols, mono- and polybasic carboxylic acids, and mixtures thereof. The flame-retardant polyester is then produced from the reaction mixture, the flame-retardant protected polyester units from the chain-forming monomer (A), the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) and from the at least difunctional alcohol (C).
It was recognized that the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) can be split in situ by alcoholysis into the monomer units of the phosphorus-containing polyester (B), which are then reacted with the chain-forming monomer (A) to give the flame-retardant polyester of the invention.
As is known in the prior art, the production of polyesters is usually carried out in several steps. In what is known as the first esterification reactor, a first condensation stage takes place at temperatures above 100° C. at a pressure of 0.5 bar or more, as a result of which the water or methanol formed in the condensation reaction can be distilled off. The condensation is then completed in the subsequent steps at temperatures usually above 225° C. and under vacuum in order to achieve a sufficiently high degree of conversion.
The process according to the invention makes it possible to add the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) intended for flame retardancy as early as in the first esterification reactor, so that no additional solvent has to be introduced into the reaction and distilled off in the later production process. The reaction time can thus be correspondingly shortened and a particularly simple process sequence results.

Ganz besonders bevorzugt ist der mindestens difunktionelle Alkohol (C) Monoethylenglykol (MEG).The at least difunctional alcohol (C) is very particularly preferably monoethylene glycol (MEG).
In one variant, the at least difunctional alcohol (C) corresponds to the ester-forming monomer (B2). In other words, the same alcohol is used in the alcoholysis of the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) as is used as the solvent in the reaction to give the reaction mixture. In this way, flame-retardant polyesters with a particularly uniform structure are obtained.
The at least difunctional alcohol (C) is used in particular in a proportion of 20 to 70 percent by weight, based on the total mass of the reaction mixture, preferably in a proportion of 30 to 65 percent by weight, particularly preferably in a proportion of 35 to 60 percent by weight.

Reaktionsbeschleuniger (D)Reaction Accelerator (D)
A reaction accelerator (D) is optionally added to the mixture of chain-forming monomer (A), phosphorus-containing polyester (B) and at least difunctional alcohol (C).
The reaction accelerator (D) is an at least difunctional ester, preferably a bisglycol ester of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and/or phthalic acid, particularly preferably bisglycol terephthalate.
The reaction accelerator (D) is used in particular in a proportion of 10 to 50 percent by weight, based on the total mass of the reaction mixture, preferably in a proportion of 20 to 40 percent by weight, particularly preferably in a proportion of 25 to 35 percent by weight.
If a reaction accelerator (D) is used, the proportion of chain-forming monomer (A) in the reaction mixture is reduced accordingly. For example, if 10 percent by weight of reaction accelerator (D) is used, the proportion of chain-forming monomer (A) is reduced by 10 percent by weight, based in each case on the total mass of the reaction mixture.
Verfahrensablaufprocedure
The reaction mixture is preferably produced in one stage in the first esterification reactor, ie the components used are mixed and converted to the reaction mixture by heating to a temperature at which alcoholysis of the phosphorus-containing polyester (B) takes place.
The reaction takes place in particular at a temperature of 150° C. or higher, preferably 250° C. or higher. The maximum temperature can be determined as a function of various process parameters, in particular the desired viscosity of the reaction mixture and the pressure selected.
The pressure during the conversion to the reaction mixture is in particular 0.5 bar or more, preferably 0.5 to 2 bar.
Polycondensation of the components in the reaction mixture is already taking place parallel to the alcoholysis. The temperature at which the alcoholysis is carried out therefore corresponds in particular to the temperature provided for the polycondensation reaction in the first esterification reactor. Although a lower temperature is sufficient for the alcoholysis than for the polycondensation reaction, a particularly simple adaptation of existing production processes to the method according to the invention is possible in this way.
The flame-retardant polymer is then produced from the reaction mixture in further steps, it being possible for processes known in the prior art to be used.
The further steps preferably take place at a temperature above 225° C. and under vacuum.
The units originating from the phosphorus-containing polymer (B) are built into the flame-retardant polyester in particular randomly.
Further advantages and properties emerge from the following description of preferred exemplary embodiments, which, however, should not be understood in a restrictive sense.

A clear, colorless and homogeneous solution with a viscosity of 22.5 mPas at 25° C. is obtained.
Vergleichsbeispiel 2Comparative example 2
10 g UKANOL™ FR 80 werden in 90 g MEG für 30 Minuten bei 100 °C gerührt. Es entsteht eine milchig weiße, inhomogene Emulsion.10 g UKANOL™ FR 80 are stirred in 90 g MEG for 30 minutes at 100 °C. A milky white, inhomogeneous emulsion is formed.
It was not possible to determine the solution viscosity at 25 °C because solid components formed again when the emulsion cooled.
Beispiel 3Example 3
10 g UKANOL™ FR 80 werden in 90 g MEG für 30 Minuten bei 190 °C gerührt.10 g UKANOL™ FR 80 are stirred in 90 g MEG for 30 minutes at 190 °C.
A clear, colorless and homogeneous solution is formed.
The solution viscosity at 25 °C is 24 mPas. This corresponds to comparative experiment 1, in which a phosphorus-containing monomer was used.
Thus, alcoholysis of the phosphorus-containing polyester UKANOL™ FR 80 is possible at elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Polymerisationpolymerization
Polyethylenterephthalat-Copolymeren (CoPET) polymerisiert. The bisglycol ester mixtures shown in Examples 4 to 6 are polymerized using Sb 2 O 3 as a catalyst in a stainless steel reactor until a target torque of about 3 Nm is reached to form polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyethylene terephthalate copolymers (CoPET).
Charakterisierung der PolyesterCharacterization of the polyesters
Table 2 lists the properties of the polymer samples obtained from Examples 4 to 6 and two other industrially produced samples.
Comparative example 7 is a PET which was produced industrially with the addition of the phosphorus-containing polyester UKANOL™ ES.
Comparative example 8 is a PET which was produced industrially without the addition of a phosphorus-containing flame retardant.
It can be seen from Table 2 that Comparative Example 4 has similar calorimetric properties and a similar intrinsic viscosity to the flame-retardant polyesters which can be obtained via a process according to the invention.
In comparison to the industrially produced comparative examples 7 and 8, similar calorimetric properties can also be observed.
The behavior and possible use profile of the flame-retardant polyesters obtainable by the process according to the invention can therefore be expected to be similar to those of known polyesters, but with additional integrated flame retardancy.
