Stand der TechnikState of the art
Hydrogen-based fuel cells are considered to be the mobility concept of the future because they only emit water as exhaust gas and enable fast refueling times. Fuel cell systems for operating vehicles need air and hydrogen for the chemical reaction. The waste heat from a fuel cell system for a vehicle is dissipated by means of a cooling circuit and given off to the environment at a radiator of the vehicle. The hydrogen is most commonly stored in tanks. The air is usually sucked in from the environment by an electric air compressor. The air mass flow through the stack is measured using an air mass flow sensor in order to enable controllable operation of the fuel cell system. The air mass flow sensor measures the pressure, the differential pressure and the temperature of the supply air and thus enables the air mass flow to be calculated. Compared to others, e.g. B. known for the internal combustion engine, air mass flow sensors, the air mass flow sensors in fuel cell systems are exposed to high pressure, high temperature and possibly humidity. Known air mass flow sensors have a high measurement tolerance at low air mass flows due to the principle of the pressure difference-based measurement method. This makes good control in the partial load range of the fuel cell system more difficult. Furthermore, the air mass flow sensor can also drift over the service life.

According to a second aspect, the invention provides: a corresponding fuel cell system according to the independent device claim.
- 1) Generation of an air mass flow in the supply air line by a compressor,
- 2) detecting a current value by a current sensor in an electrical power network of the fuel cell system,
- 3) calculating a corresponding mass air flow for the sensed current value,
The steps of the method according to the invention can be carried out in the given order or in a modified order. The steps of the method according to the invention can be carried out simultaneously and/or at least partially one after the other.
The fuel cell system according to the invention can preferably be used for mobile applications, for example in vehicles, in particular fuel-powered vehicles. The fuel cell system according to the invention can serve as the main energy supplier for a vehicle. At the same time, however, it is also conceivable that the fuel cell system within the meaning of the invention can be used as a secondary drive and/or auxiliary drive of a vehicle, for example a hybrid vehicle. The fuel cell system according to the invention can also be used for static applications, for example in generators.
The fuel cell system can be designed in the form of a stack with a number of stacked fuel cells.
A short circuit in the fuel cell system means, within the meaning of the invention, that the fuel cell system is switched off from the vehicle's electrical system. The electrical energy flows in a closed circuit through the fuel cell system.
The idea of the invention is that for the calibration of the air mass flow sensor or for the adaptation of the measured values of the air mass flow sensor, in particular in the partial load range of the Fuel cell system, the fuel cell system is short-circuited. The invention recognizes that the air mass flow, in particular the oxygen mass flow, which flows through the fuel cell system in the short circuit, is proportional to the current obtained. If the current is measured during this process, the correct reading for the mass air flow sensor can be calculated from the current value.
The calibration or adaptation process according to the invention can either be carried out in cases in which the short circuit of the stack is active anyway (e.g. during the start and/or after the vehicle has been switched off), or it can be forced. In the event of a forced short circuit in the fuel cell system, the electrical power required for the vehicle can be drawn from a battery.
If a stack bypass valve is provided between the supply air line and the exhaust air line in the fuel cell system, the stack bypass valve can be closed or brought into a constant position during the calibration or adaptation process. The air mass flow that flows through the air mass flow sensor can thus be carried out as completely or to a known part as possible through the stack. In the system topologies without a stack bypass valve, this step does not need to be performed.
When the method starts, the air mass flow can be varied, for example by varying the speed of the compressor. The rotational speed of the compressor is preferably reduced since the measuring range of the air mass flow sensor to be calibrated tends to be in the lower range. The current drawn from the stack is detected by the current sensor. Since the current is proportional to the oxygen mass flow in the short circuit, the air mass flow can be calculated from the current, for example using the Faraday equation. The calibration or adaptation process for this flow or air mass flow stage is thus completed. The calibration or adaptation process can be repeated for different current levels so that a characteristic curve of the air mass flow sensor can be created.
The calibration process can preferably be carried out at least when it is new, in order to compensate for production-related tolerances in the air mass flow sensor. The adaptation process can be repeated again and again (e.g. once a week) in order to compensate for sensor drifts over the service life.
Advantageously, with the help of the invention, the air mass flow sensor can be calibrated quickly and precisely using simple means. In particular in the case of low air mass flows, for example in the partial load range of the fuel cell system, in which the measurement tolerances of the air mass flow sensor are high, the method according to the invention can be advantageous in order to calibrate the air mass flow sensor precisely. Advantageously, the method according to the invention does not require any additional components in the system. In this way, an uninterruptible power supply for vehicles can be provided in a particularly stable and easily controllable manner, even when the fuel cell system is not being operated at high load.
- 4) setting a reading of the mass air flow sensor to the calculated mass air flow and/or adjusting the mass air flow sensor.
In this way, a fully set or adjusted air mass flow sensor can be provided. It is also conceivable within the scope of the invention for the air mass flow sensor to be recalibrated using the method, in particular steps 1) to 3), after the measured value of the air mass flow sensor has been set in step 4). This can be advantageous if a previously performed calibration has become invalid due to the change in the air mass flow sensor.
Furthermore, in a method within the scope of the invention it can be provided that the short circuit of the fuel cell system for carrying out the method is generated during at least one, several or every start of the vehicle. In addition, it is conceivable that the short circuit of the fuel cell system for carrying out the method is generated after one, several or each parking of the vehicle. Furthermore, it is possible that the short circuit of the fuel cell system for carrying out the method is enforced while the vehicle is in operation, with a traction battery being used to drive the vehicle, in particular in the case of an enforced short circuit. In this way, suitable points in time can always be found when the air mass flow sensor can be calibrated, which can be selected according to a user's wishes and depending on the possibilities in the system.
The method, in particular steps 1) to 3), can advantageously be carried out at least once after the production of the air mass flow sensor. In this way, the air mass flow sensor that is put into operation can deliver precise measurement results right from the start.
Furthermore, in a method within the scope of the invention it can be provided that the method, in particular steps 1) to 3), is repeated regularly, at certain time intervals and/or after certain distances or kilometers driven by the vehicle. In this way it can be ensured that the air mass flow sensor can be recalibrated again and again in order to adjust possible deviations due to aging of the sensor.
Furthermore, in a method within the scope of the invention it can be provided that to carry out the method, in particular steps 1) to 3), a bypass valve between the air supply line of the fuel cell system and an exhaust air line is closed or brought into a constant position. In this way it can be ensured that the air mass flow that flows through the air mass flow sensor also flows through the stack. Consequently, the calculation of the mass air flow can be done accurately.
To generate an air mass flow in the supply air line in step 1), a speed of the compressor can be adjusted. The speed of the compressor is a simple variable that can be set, which can cause different air mass flow values, which in turn can supply corresponding measurable current values.
In addition, in a method within the scope of the invention it can be provided that in step 1) the air mass flow is varied, preferably reduced, and/or that in step 1) a speed of the compressor is varied, preferably reduced. In this way, the air mass flow can approach the range where measurement tolerances of the air mass flow sensor are to be expected, in order to be able to precisely calibrate the air mass flow sensor in these critical ranges.
In addition, in a method within the scope of the invention, it can be provided that the method, in particular steps 1) to 3), is carried out for different speeds of the compressor and/or for different current values of the current sensor. In this way, a characteristic curve for the air mass flow sensor can be provided in order to enable correct calibration and adjustment of the air mass flow sensor in different measurement ranges.
Furthermore, in a method within the scope of the invention it can be provided that in step 3) a steam mass flow and/or a nitrogen mass flow (through the air inlet line) is/is taken into account. Thus, when calculating the air mass flow in step 3), the proportions of vapor and/or nitrogen in the air mass flow can be taken into account.
Furthermore, it is conceivable that an ambient humidity is taken into account for detecting the vapor mass flow. For this purpose, the ambient humidity can be detected using a humidity sensor, e.g. actively measured, and/or obtained, e.g. passively queried, using a weather service, e.g. cloud-based. In this way, the existing sensors in the system can be taken into account.
The gravimetric proportion of nitrogen or oxygen in the dry air can be used to determine the proportion of nitrogen in the air mass flow.

The calibration or adaptation process according to the invention can either be carried out in cases in which the short circuit of the

When the method starts, the air mass flow dm/dt can be varied in step 1), for example by varying the speed of the
In step 2), the current I drawn by the
There are various options for determining the vapor mass flow dmvapour/dt.

- a. by a humidity sensor FS placed in the entrance area (eg behind the air filter 13) and/or
- b. from weather information from the area (cloud function)

Luftmassestromstufe abgeschlossen. The calibration or adaptation process for this current or air mass flow stage is therefore complete.
The calibration or adaptation process can be repeated for different current levels so that a characteristic curve of the air mass flow sensor PFM is created.
The calibration process can preferably be carried out at least when it is new, in order to compensate for production-related tolerances of the air mass flow sensor PFM. The adaptation process can be repeated again and again (e.g. once a week) to compensate for sensor drifts over the service life.
Justieren Luftmassenstromsensors PFM.
- 4) Setting a measured value of the air mass flow sensor PFM to the calculated air mass flow dm/dt or adjusting the air mass flow sensor PFM.
