Description
The invention relates to a system for operating a fuel cell stack with heat exchangers, the respective heat exchangers being thermally coupled to one another by means of a coolant circuit.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Hydrogen-based fuel cells are the basis for a mobility concept of the future, as they only emit water and enable fast refueling times. For example, PEM fuel cells (PEM: "protonexchange membrane"; proton exchange membrane) can be operated with compressed air supplied to the cathode of the fuel cell with oxygen as the oxidizing agent and hydrogen supplied to the anode of the fuel cell as fuel in an electrocatalytic electrode process, to provide electrical energy with a high degree of efficiency. Depleted or low-oxygen air is discharged as exhaust gas, which carries with it certain amounts of gaseous or liquid water. This water can be returned to the supply air, for example, via a humidifier arranged in the exhaust gas path. When the cathode gas, such as air, is compressed with, for example, water-cooled charge air coolers, heat is generated which must be dissipated before it enters the fuel cell in order to prevent the membrane of the fuel cell from overheating and drying out.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
The heat extracted from the cathode gas must be dissipated to the environment via a cooling system, which, according to the prior art, additionally loads the main cooling circuit, which, for example, cools the fuel cell stack itself, or if the fuel cell stack and a charge air cooler are connected in parallel makes a larger flow rate of a coolant pump necessary. This can mean that the maximum power output of the fuel cell stack has to be restricted due to the limited performance of the cooling system (derating), or that the fuel cell stack has to be designed larger, which results in corresponding additional costs.
According to one aspect, a system for operating a fuel cell stack, a method for operating and a use of the system according to the features of the independent claims are proposed, which at least in part achieve the objects described. Advantageous configurations are the subject matter of the dependent claims and the description below.
The invention is based on the knowledge that a transfer of heat from the supply path of a cathode circuit of the fuel cell stack into an exhaust air path of the cathode circuit of the fuel cell stack enables higher energy recuperation by an exhaust air turbine.
According to one aspect, a system for operating a fuel cell stack is proposed, having at least one first heat exchanger, which is thermally coupled to a supply path of a cathode circuit of the fuel cell stack, and is arranged downstream of an oxidizing agent compressor in the supply path. Furthermore, a second heat exchanger and a third heat exchanger are provided in the system, each of which is thermally coupled to an exhaust air path of the cathode circuit of the fuel cell stack, the second heat exchanger seen downstream in front of an exhaust air turbine and the third heat exchanger seen downstream after the exhaust air Turbine is arranged. The oxidizing agent compressor is coupled to the exhaust air turbine in the system for energy recuperation. The respective heat exchangers of the system are thermally coupled to one another by means of a coolant circuit.
A cathode gas that is fed to the cathode side of the fuel cell stack has an oxidizing agent for the electrocatalytic reaction of the fuel cells in the fuel cell stack, wherein the oxidizing agent can in particular include oxygen or air.
For example, air is passed through the oxidizing agent compressor with the oxidizing agent contained therein through the first heat exchanger and after flowing through the fuel cell stack, in which the oxidizing agent contained is converted, the remaining air flows over the exhaust air turbine, with part of the energy contained is recuperated. For heat recovery and recuperation, the system can have at least three gas / heat exchangers, which are thermally coupled and connected to one another in a separate coolant circuit, in that the coolant is circulated, for example, by a specially provided coolant pump.
In order to improve efficiency, the heat exchangers can be designed to have a countercurrent flow of air and coolant. In addition, the heat exchangers can be designed to have, in particular, further flow configurations, such as direct or cross-flow conduction, in order, for example, to increase the compactness of the cooling circuit.
The coolant circuit can be viewed from the coldest point downstream of the exhaust turbine. Here, the coolant in the third heat exchanger is caused by the exhaust air emerging from the exhaust air turbine cooled and a heat flow thus flows within the third heat exchanger in the direction of the exhaust air. The first and second heat exchangers are thermally coupled in order to supply heat from the supply path of the cathode circuit to the exhaust air path of the cathode circuit, in particular in order to achieve a higher temperature level in the exhaust air path upstream of the exhaust air turbine. This thermal coupling can take place via a coolant circuit or a more direct thermal coupling, for example by means of a thermally conductive, for example metallic, coupling element arranged between the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger. Optionally or additionally, the coolant can be passed through a stack coolant circuit and / or a low-temperature coolant circuit. This can become necessary if a temperature of the coolant cannot be reduced sufficiently by the third heat exchanger in order to set the desired air temperature at the inlet of the fuel cell stack.
This coolant pump is conveniently positioned in the coldest area of the coolant circuit. In principle, however, any further installation position is conceivable.
The charge air cooling provided in this system, i. H. the cooling of the cathode gas in the feed path of the cathode circuit takes place in the first heat exchanger, with a heat flow taking place in the direction of the coolant. This heat is then in the second heat exchanger in the opposite direction, i. H. transferred from the coolant to the exhaust air, so that the maximum possible enthalpy is available in front of the exhaust air turbine.
In this system, the hot cathode gas, which can be produced by compressing the cathode gas by means of the oxidizing agent compressor, is advantageously cooled with the aid of the cooler exhaust air in order to avoid an additional heat sink, such as a low-temperature cooling system or a stack cooling system to have to stress thermally. In this form of cathode gas or charge air cooling with at least three different heat exchangers, which are arranged in the inlet and outlet air path of the cathode circuit of the fuel cell stack and are thermally coupled by a coolant circuit, which can provide a coolant pump, a fuel cell stack -Main cooling circuit are relieved significantly. This can result in a corresponding opportunity to save costs and energy, for example by using coolers, fans and pumps of smaller dimensions.
A recovered power of the exhaust air turbine can also advantageously be increased by coupling heat into the exhaust air path, as a result of which the electrical power requirement of the air compressor is additionally reduced. Overall, by reducing the peripheral energy consumption, the number of cells in the stack can be reduced and thus lead to considerable cost savings.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the system is set up to optionally thermally couple the coolant circuit with a stack coolant circuit and / or a low-temperature coolant circuit. As a result, a charge air temperature can advantageously be set for the fuel cell stack and, together with the other heat exchangers, as much energy as possible can be recuperated at the same time, thereby relieving the electrical machine of the compressor and improving the overall efficiency of the fuel cell system.
The thermal coupling takes place via the coolant circuit, which is set up to exchange heat between the respective heat exchangers at least partially independently of the further coolant circuits mentioned, for example of a vehicle. A dedicated coolant pump can be provided for the coolant circuit for autonomous operation. The coolant pump can be arranged in the coolant circuit, for example, at a coldest point of the cooling circuit, but system designs can also lead to other arrangements of the coolant pump. Alternatively, this dedicated coolant pump of the coolant circuit can be dispensed with if the coolant circuit is permanently connected to a named further coolant circuit.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the system has a first control valve in order to thermally couple the coolant circuit with the stack coolant circuit and / or the low-temperature coolant circuit by means of a coolant.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the system has a fourth heat exchanger and a pre-compressor in the supply path, the pre-compressor being arranged upstream of the fourth heat exchanger, viewed downstream, in order to supply an oxidizing agent to the oxidizing agent compressor at increased pressure.
With this two-stage charging, i. H. The two-stage pressure increase for the oxidizing agent of the fuel cell stack, the compression of the cathode gas, such as the air, takes place by means of two compressors.
In a first compression stage, an electrically driven pre-compressor, which, for example, is not set up to recuperate mechanical energy, acts. Thus, the flow of oxidizing agent, for example in the form of air, is first compressed in the pre-compressor, whereby it is heated.
This second compression stage can be set up to be operated in partial load operation and can therefore be provided by means of a controllable bypass valve, both for a bypass of the oxidizing agent compressor and for the exhaust air turbine.
In addition, such a bypass valve can also comprise heat exchangers assigned to the oxidizing agent compressor or the exhaust air turbine. This makes it possible to reduce the flow volume on the charge air side as far as possible in single-stage operation. Depending on how high the respective compression ratios of the oxidizing agent compressor or the pre-compressor are selected, different heat loads result for the first heat exchanger and the fourth heat exchanger. Additionally or alternatively, the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger can be set up to additionally provide a bypass for the coolant of the heat exchangers at a partial load at which the second compressor stage, ie the oxidizing agent compressor, is not active. Advantageously, each compressor stage can be set up with its own heat exchanger, including a coolant and air-side bypass, in order to enable a temperature T of the oxidant inflow at the cathode-side inlet of the fuel cell stack to be regulated as precisely as possible.
Overall, the idealized balance applies in this case
By means of this two-stage design of the system for operating the fuel cell stack, the load on the components in the cathode circuit can be reduced, since the thermal coupling of the respective heat exchangers or an adapted operating strategy increases an operating range by increasing the maximum compression of the second stage, d. H. of the oxidizing agent compressor, can be safely fallen below in two-stage compressor operation.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the first heat exchanger is thermally coupled to at least the second heat exchanger and is set up to supply heat from the supply path to the exhaust air path upstream of the exhaust air turbine.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the respective heat exchangers are thermally coupled to one another by means of a liquid coolant of the coolant circuit.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the system has a coolant pump which is set up to transport the liquid coolant between the respective heat exchangers in order to thermally couple the heat exchangers to one another. Alternatively or additionally, the system for operating a fuel cell stack can be set up to have only one coolant pump with optional exchange of the coolant between the respective heat exchangers and a stack coolant circuit and / or a low-temperature coolant circuit. This applies above all, but not exclusively, in connection with the proposed heat transfer bypass valves, which enable a targeted balance of the coolant or heat flows.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that at least the second heat exchanger, the third heat exchanger and the coolant pump are arranged in series in the coolant circuit in order to be thermally coupled to one another.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger are arranged in series in the coolant circuit in order to be thermally coupled to one another.
According to one aspect, it is proposed that the fourth heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger are arranged in parallel in the coolant circuit in order to be thermally coupled to one another, and that the system has a second control valve via which the coolant can flow through the fourth heat exchanger and / or the second heat exchanger can be controlled.
A method for operating the two-stage system described above, in which the cooling circuit of the first heat exchanger is arranged parallel to the cooling circuit of the fourth heat exchanger, is proposed, wherein a second control valve of the system, which divides the coolant flows between the first heat exchanger and the fourth heat exchanger controls, depending on an electrical power that the fuel cell stack emits, is regulated in such a way that a temperature of the coolant that is provided to the second heat exchanger is at a maximum.
In other words, if the system is designed with two-stage compression in the cathode circuit and the first heat exchanger and the fourth heat exchanger are arranged in parallel in the cooling circuit, depending on the load that the fuel cell stack has to apply, a division of the coolant flows between the two heat exchangers, a flow division by means of the second control valve take place so that the coolant temperature is maximum upstream of the second heat exchanger. At low loads or when the second compression stage is not active, the second control valve is completely closed and the entire coolant flow is directed through the fourth heat exchanger. Because the compressor that builds up a higher pressure difference has a higher temperature at the compressor outlet, the regulation described can achieve a corresponding heat input in the respective heat exchanger, so that the maximum possible temperature for recuperation is achieved at the second heat exchanger .
It is proposed to use the system described above for operating a mobile platform.
A mobile platform can be an at least partially automated system that is mobile and / or a driver assistance system. An example can be an at least partially automated vehicle or a vehicle with a driver assistance system. That is, in this context an at least partially automated system includes a mobile platform with regard to an at least partially automated functionality, but a mobile platform also includes vehicles and other mobile machines including driver assistance systems. Further examples of mobile platforms can be driver assistance systems with several sensors, mobile multi-sensor robots such as robotic vacuum cleaners or lawn mowers, a multi-sensor monitoring system, a production machine, a personal assistant or an access control system. Each of these systems can be a fully or partially autonomous system.
As a result, all the advantages that the system has for operating a fuel cell stack can be used for operating a mobile platform.
