Forest, bush and moor fires are favored by drought and strong winds. In many regions of the world, e.g. in Australia, bush fires are a normal, annually recurring phenomenon to rejuvenate nature. However, the Australian bushfires have become extremely out of control and - like the rampant California wildfires of 2020 - have attracted a great deal of public attention. Although not as spectacular as in Australia, it can be observed that forest and moor fires are also increasing in Germany due to climate change.

Against this background and in recognition of the fact that the energy yield of a wind turbine will remain the main economic motivation for wind turbine manufacturers and operators, the invention sets itself the task of designing a wind turbine in such a way that it can also evaporate water without any significant loss of yield and is suitable for continuous water entry into the lower atmosphere for the purpose of transporting water with the wind.

Die Unteransprüche geben vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen an.The subclaims specify advantageous configurations.
The essential idea of the invention is that the wind energy installation according to the invention is particularly well able to evaporate the majority or even all of the water supplied to it and thus release it into the air as water vapor. The water does not have to be heated to the normal pressure boiling temperature of 100 °C, but rather it is fed to a low-pressure environment, which already exists on the suction side of the rotor blades, which are subjected to wind and are rotating. The negative pressure is determined by the apparent wind speed of the air flowing past the rotor blade profile. This wind speed is dominated by the rotation speed. The evaporation takes place directly when the water exits from nozzle fields, which are arranged on the suction side of the rotor blades, preferably in the area of the greatest negative pressure, i.e. the greatest difference in air pressure to normal pressure. Any warming of the water on its way through the wind turbine tower favors evaporation; this heating can preferably be done solely by solar heating of a wall of the tower.

The lowest possible air pressure above the nozzles promotes the evaporation of the water. For this purpose, the aerodynamics of the rotor blades can be used in a targeted manner to locally reduce the air pressure. In other words, the nozzles can be placed at that point on the aerodynamic profile where the air surrounding the profile has the lowest pressure. The lift of the aerodynamic profile of a rotor blade arises because the air flowing around the profile leads to a local pressure gradient from the pressure side to the suction side.

The rotor of a wind turbine experiences the true wind speed, v 0 , which ideally hits the rotor surface at right angles. The revolving rotor blades (10) also experience an additional wind speed component, v R , which results from the rotation of the rotor, the so-called rotational wind. These two wind speed vectors are perpendicular to each other and add up consequently, according to Pythagoras' theorem, to the apparent (but effectively effective in the sense of the invention) wind speed, v, which is applied to each rotor blade (10). The rotational wind component, v R , is evidently proportional at every point (here: nozzle) of a rotor blade (10) to the rotational speed of the rotor and the distance from the point to the center of rotation (here: hub).

A first advantageous embodiment of the wind turbine according to the invention is to design the nozzle fields on the suction sides (13) of the rotor blades (10) in such a way that the nozzles form a linear arrangement along the rotor blade (10). As a result, the largest possible air mass can be supplied with water simultaneously. A linear array of nozzles should be understood to mean such an arrangement of the nozzles in a line.
In a second advantageous embodiment, all nozzles are at a minimum distance from the hub of the rotor, which is at least 40% of the length of the rotor blade. The high apparent wind speed in the outer areas of the rotating rotor blades (10) promotes direct evaporation from the nozzles. It should be noted that there is no permanent interaction between the water mass and the air mass during evaporation in the irrigation system proposed here. Due to the movement of air and the continuous flow of water through the water pipe, air and water do not have the opportunity to equalize their temperature. In addition, water molecules cannot condense back into the water surface at the nozzles.
Wind energy is used by the wind turbine to produce electrical energy. The at least one water pump can also be operated with this energy. In addition, the energy of the wind is used to generate the rotation with which the nozzles distribute the water over a large area in the air. Once the water is emitted, the wind takes over the transport of the water. The system is therefore operated solely by renewable energy.
Complete evaporation of the emitted water is possible if the right framework conditions are in place. In particular, the atmospheric air pressure, the air temperature and the true wind speed are decisive and uncontrollable quantities on which the capacity of the air to hold water vapor depends. The amount of water that is emitted per unit of time and, if necessary, the water temperature can be controlled and adapted to the conditions.
What is attractive about complete evaporation is the associated cleaning effect of the water, which then returns to the ground as normal rainwater. It therefore makes particular sense to take the water for the wind turbines from a surface water reservoir and, if possible, not from the groundwater. Natural lakes and rivers are ideal sources of water, estuaries into the sea in particular appear to be ideal installation points for a wind turbine with an evaporation device, i.e. the water should be extracted shortly before it becomes salinated due to mixing with seawater. The water fed in should be pre-filtered to such an extent that it no longer contains any suspended particles that could lead to clogging of the nozzles.
When fed with fresh water, the wind turbine according to the invention is well suited for triggering local sprinkling on land.
When irrigation of nearby areas is to be achieved, eg for irrigation of agricultural land, or to prevent or fight forest, bush and bog fires, water can be emitted in larger quantities. The water is then in small Transports droplets with the air until the droplets have settled to the ground. In this operating mode, too, part of the water will evaporate and remain in the air until it condenses. The degree of evaporation can be influenced by choosing a favorable time of day, for example.
For example, if nearby fields, meadows or forests are to be irrigated during a dry period, this should be done in most locations and in most weather conditions, in the early hours of the morning. In the early morning hours, the air temperature usually reaches its lowest value during the day. The air is therefore the easiest to saturate with water vapor. In addition, there can be no evaporation from direct sunlight before sunrise. In the case of forest, bush and moor fires, the strong heat development causes thermals that cause the hot air to rise vertically above the fire. As a result, air is sucked in horizontally from the environment. Wind turbines in the vicinity experience a wind direction pointing in the direction of the fire. When these wind turbines eject water from their rotor blades, this water is drawn to the fire to be fought by the local wind direction.
The ability of WTs to induce targeted rain conditions on land in their local environment is considered a major asset that strongly recommends installation near dry areas.

The components according to the invention are a water supply line (40), which runs underground in this example, a water pump (42) at the foot of the tower, a riser (44) in the tower carrying water up to the level of the rotatably mounted gondola, a rotary union for the water into the Nacelle (not shown) and a water line in the hub of the rotor (46), main water lines (47) and secondary water lines (not shown) in the rotor blades up to their tips and a linear nozzle field (48) each arranged on the suction sides along approximately the outside lying half of each rotor blade.
In principle, the riser (44) can also be arranged in multiple versions in the tower. This is because it is advantageous for water evaporation through the wind turbine if the riser (44) in the tower is in thermal contact with the wall area of the tower that is predominantly exposed to solar radiation. In the northern hemisphere, this is the southern side. The solar radiation then solar heats the water in the riser (44) as it rises to the rotor. A plurality of risers (44) fastened next to one another on the inner wall of the tower can promote the heating of the water without the desired water throughput having to be reduced. The plurality of risers (44) can emerge from a single pipe at the outlet of the pump (42) by splitting them up and can be brought together again to form a single pipe near the nacelle.

In order to track the wind turbine rotor to the changing wind direction, modern wind turbines have a yaw system that can turn the nacelle around the top of the tower. This results in the difficulty that the water has to be brought from the stationary riser (44) into the rotatably mounted gondola.
A water pipe must lead from the horizontally rotating gondola into the vertically rotating rotor, ie inevitably into the rotor hub (46). In the hub (46), the water line branches into main water lines (47) that lead to the individual rotor blades. A controllable valve and/or a controllable pump (49) is optionally present in the main water line (47) of each rotor blade, with which the flow rate can be regulated or the flow of water can be stopped.

Consequently, the wind turbine according to the invention can also be used for seawater desalination. In this case, however, salt deposits inevitably remain on the rotor blades (10). These salt deposits disturb the aerodynamics of the rotor blade (10). In order to keep this disturbance as small as possible, the nozzles (48) for emitting the seawater must be attached to a point on the suction side (13) of the rotor blade (10) where the salt deposits cannot have a major impact on the aerodynamics. In addition, it must be possible to remove the salt deposits automatically and with little effort during operation.
In order not to have permanent and potentially ever-growing salt deposits near the trailing edge of the rotor blade (10), the control device can at least cause the water pump (42) to increase the pump output by at least 100% for a few seconds at intervals of a few minutes. The wind turbine then ejects a powerful jet of water through the nozzles (48) every few minutes. Salt deposits that have formed in front of the nozzles (48) are washed away and fall to the ground. Care must be taken that such a rinsing mode only becomes active when the rotor blade (10) to be cleaned is in a suitable position (cf. above).
The washed-off salt deposits and the salt that is separated from the water after the rotor blade (10) during the evaporation process fall to the ground behind the wind turbine. Therefore, seawater desalination with this irrigation system is mainly suitable for offshore wind turbines. Onshore wind turbines would contaminate their surroundings with the falling salt. However, one could also consider a near-onshore wind turbine, which is set up just off the coast with the base of the tower in the sea water in order to transport desalinated sea water to land with the onshore sea wind. When the sun shines on the earth, land mass heats up faster than water. For this reason, so-called sea breezes occur in many locations over the course of a day. Sea breeze is a local wind created by thermals over land interacting with the air mass over the colder water. At many coastal locations around the world, there are regular and often very strong sea winds. Said thermals would then also benefit the energy generation by the wind turbines.
Finally, it should be pointed out that the water emission can also have a beneficial effect on the energy generation of the wind turbines.
The aerodynamic properties of rotor blades (10) can be improved using various mechanisms. Many of these mechanisms aim to improve the boundary layer between the surface of the suction side (13) and the laminar air flow. Injecting and extracting air in the boundary layer can increase the lift coefficient by up to 60%.
The traditional motivation for using elements to improve the aerodynamic behavior of a rotor blade (10) is to reduce loads. Load reduction leads to a saving of material in the rotor blades (10), but also in the entire support structure of the wind turbine. Ultimately, load reduction is therefore an aspect of the profitability of a wind turbine. In mass-produced wind turbines, active elements to improve aerodynamics are still largely avoided, since they increase the complexity of the wind turbine rather than reducing its costs. Due to their low complexity, passive vortex generators are installed in series wind turbines. The way they work is that the boundary layer is enriched with energy in order to reduce the stagnation of the air flow (11) very close to the rotor blade surface. This delays the separation of the flow and the onset of the stall effect on the suction side (13) of the rotor blade (10).
While active elements such as blowing air into the boundary layer to improve the aerodynamic properties in aircraft are often used, their use in wind turbines is not standard. If a wind turbine according to the invention is erected, the positive effects on the aerodynamics can also be used when designing the system.
