In this respect, the invention relates to a measuring device which is set up to detect an energy distribution and an angular distribution or a pulse distribution of an ensemble of electrons which are emitted from a sample to be examined. The invention also relates in particular to angularly resolving energy analyzers, parallel imaging pulse microscopes based on hemisphere analyzers and time-of-flight pulse microscopes for the simultaneous detection of the pulse and energy distribution of the electrons. The invention can also be used for a method of using this device for detecting the angular distribution or momentum distribution of electrons, e.g. B. as an application in the analysis of solid samples by means of photoelectrons or Auger electrons.
It is well known to use different types of energy analyzers for the analysis of photoelectrons and Auger electrons from solid samples [1]. In special embodiments, the electrons emitted by the sample are detected with angular resolution, a method generally known as ARPES (ARPES: angular-resolved photo-electron spectroscopy). In other embodiments, the momentum distribution of the electrons emitted by the solid is mapped, with the necessary energy resolution either with dispersive energy analyzers, in particular with double hemisphere analyzers [2, 3], with single hemisphere analyzers [4, 5], with time-of-flight analyzers [6 ] or a combination of both types [7]. The electronic band structure of a material can be determined from the angular or pulse distribution in connection with the energy distribution [1]. In all methods, the analyzer device can be provided with an imaging spin filter [6, 8].
In all of the processes mentioned, the electrons are transferred from the solid sample to the entrance of the energy analyzer by means of transfer optics made up of electron-optical lenses and are transferred to the entrance slit, e.g. B. with dispersive analyzers or the entry point of the low-energy drift path, z. B. focused on time-of-flight analyzers. Such transfer optics are broadband, i.e. they transmit a wide energy band, only limited by the chromatic aberration of the lenses. In general, electrons with very different energies therefore enter the entrance slit. Photoelectrons that are triggered with X-rays represent a typical case. This is a widely used method known as ESCA (ESCA: electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis [1]). Another very common case are Auger electrons, which are triggered by a primary electron beam with an energy of typically several keV. In these and many other cases the signal of interest lies in a very broad spectrum. Depending on the excitation energy, widths of up to several keV occur. The transfer optics transfer the electrons with this broad spectral distribution into the entrance of the energy analyzer.
In dispersive analyzers - the most common prototype is the hemisphere analyzer - electrons with too high an energy hit the inside of the outer spherical electrode and electrons with too low energy hit the outside of the inner spherical electrode or on correction electrodes near the beam exit. There, these electrons trigger scatter electrons and secondary electrons, some of which pass through the exit slit and superimpose the real signal as a background. In time-of-flight analyzers, electrons with higher energies feed Series of discrete artifact signals. These series result from the condition that the flight time of the relevant mostly faster electrons is shorter than that of the real signals by one or more periods of the pulsed excitation source. Artifact signals occur for lower energies if the flight time is an integral multiple of the excitation period longer than that of the real signal electrons. In practice, the latter case leads to a diffuse background, since these slow electrons are strongly dispersed over time in the drift path. Both cases lead to temporal coincidences with the real signals, which for unfavorable combinations of the period of the pulsed excitation and drift energy can lead to a massive impairment of the real signals. A systematic compilation of the conditions for such unwanted temporal coincidences of the background signals with the real signals for realistic working conditions is given in [9].
All previous transport systems in electron energy analyzers [2-7] use linear electron-optical lens systems for beam transport, i.e. cylinder-symmetrical lens arrangements, which appears to be advantageous with a view to minimizing aberrations.
The object of the present invention is to substantially reduce the disruptive signal contributions of incorrect energies or, in favorable cases, to eliminate them completely.
This object is achieved based on an imaging device for electrons according to the preamble of
In its simplest form, the arrangement according to the invention consists of a doubly segmented electron-optical column with a small kink angle of typically α ≈ 2 ° to 4 ° (or larger angles, only limited by the aberration of the deflector) and a deflector element at the kink point and an additional selector diaphragm in the segment of the optical column on the analyzer side. In a preferred second embodiment, the beam tilting behind the selector diaphragm can be reversed by segmenting the optical column three times and introducing a further complementary tilting angle of α - so that the beam in the third segment runs parallel to the first segment again. Due to the small articulation angle, the resulting beam offset between the first and third segment is only a few millimeters in a practical structure, so that the entire arrangement can be accommodated in a linear support tube and a linear vacuum tube.
- (i) The angular information of the beam to be imaged is encoded in a reciprocal image plane as an image of the impulse distribution (short: impulse image), the radial coordinate quantifying the transverse impulse. Analogously, the location information of the beam being imaged is encoded in a reciprocal image plane as angle information.
- (ii) The transverse momentum can be changed in a well-defined way by an electric or magnetic deflector.
- (iii) With a fixed deflector setting, the momentum transfer to a passing electron is proportional to its time in the deflector field and therefore dependent on its kinetic energy.
The arrangement according to the invention is particularly advantageous for increasing the useful signal component in experiments that are limited by the measuring efficiency of the detector. This is the case, for example, with pulsed excitation and detection with a Single-channel delay line detector [10] that can only register one counting event per excitation pulse. The counting events are distributed over the entire recorded energy interval. This registers a high proportion of electrons that do not contribute to the desired signal. The reduction according to the invention of the recorded energy interval thus leads directly to an increase in efficiency by the factor of the reduction in the width of the interval. In [11] an alternative method is described in which the reduction of the recorded energy band is implemented by means of an electron-optical high-pass filter. However, this approach is associated with a massive loss of depth of field, so that the measurement data shown in publication [11] are composed of individual intervals with a bandwidth of only 0.5 eV.
The arrangement according to the invention also offers a particular advantage in cases in which background contributions with significantly higher energies are added to the examined photoemission signal. This is the case in experiments with synchrotron radiation when contributions of higher order light from the monochromator are present in the exciting beam. The background signals generated thereby are completely eliminated with the method according to the invention. The alternative approach described in [9] of shifting the artifact signals of higher orders out of the measurement window by changing the photon energy is associated with the loss of free choice of photon energy. For many experiments like the three-dimensional tomography of the momentum space [12] the exact setting of a certain photon energy is indispensable.
Furthermore, the method according to the invention offers advantages when using an imaging spin filter [6, 8, 13]. In the spin analysis, a background superimposed on the measurement signal leads to a reduction in the measured spin asymmetry. Due to the calculation algorithm for the spin polarization, the background cannot be eliminated by subtraction. The same applies to the statistical error of the spin measurement, which is increased disproportionately by the addition of an external signal. Details on spin measurements are given in [14]. The problem of an added background signal for spin-resolved measurements is therefore even greater than for spin-integral experiments. In particular, when scattered on a spin filter crystal, high-energy background electrons trigger low-energy secondary electrons, which superimpose the real low-energy signal of electrons that were scattered selectively.
From the publications [15] and [16] a deflection device between two column arrangements is known in which the optical axes of the columns are inclined by 10 ° [15] and 45 ° [16]. Imaging energy filters for particle spectrometry are known from [17], for example.
The prior art also teaches the achromatic deflection [15, 16] or the symmetrical deflection [18], in which inter alia. the dispersion is compensated. In the arrangement according to the invention, however, it is precisely the dispersion of this deflection element that is used for energy pre-filtering.
The arrangement according to the invention can be used particularly advantageously in connection with the following publications.

In all of the above-mentioned arrangements and methods, the optical axis of the transfer optics is linear, apart from the circular paths in the hemisphere analyzers. Apart from the naturally present chromatic aberration of the transfer optics, there are no active precautions whatsoever for suppressing undesired energies that lead to background or artifact signals in the analyzers. For these instruments and many other devices not listed here, the device according to the invention for reducing the subsurface is very advantageous.

For the sake of clarity, an exaggeratedly large deflection angle of α = 5 ° is shown in all schematic cross-sections. According to simulations, smaller angles of approximately 2-4 ° are sufficient for the method according to the invention.
The trajectories of the electrons with kinetic energies in the energy interval to be examined (solid lines) and for a background signal with too high energy (dashed trajectories) are shown schematically. This type of background occurs, for example, with the photoemission of inner shells or with the existence of higher orders in the exciting X-ray beam.
