Description
Matrix potential sensors are used, among other things, to determine the suction tension in the soil, but can also measure the suction tension in any medium that is hydraulically coupled to the sensor. The conductivity of the matrix material, which changes with the suction tension of the medium, is used as the measuring principle.
Matrix potential sensors - sometimes also known as gypsum block sensors - are primarily used to determine the suction tension in the soil. The suction tension indicates how great the holding force of the water in the ground is and is usually given in millibars or hectopascals. Plants have to overcome the holding power of water in order to draw water from the soil.
Matrix potential sensors are inexpensive and sufficiently accurate for control applications in plant irrigation. This means that they are superior to the tensiometers, which are more accurate but also significantly more expensive to purchase, for common applications.
The measuring effect is based on the fact that the liquid content of a porous medium influences the electrical conductivity of this medium if the liquid has a defined specific conductivity. A test specimen made of a porous material (matrix material) is used for the measurement. If the test specimen has a hydraulic connection to the surrounding medium, the suction tension of which is to be determined, an equilibrium of the suction tensions is established after a time dependent on the respective circumstances (contact surface, material for separating the test specimen and the surrounding medium, suction tension of the test specimen and the surrounding medium) . The liquid in the surrounding medium moves into the specimen as long as the suction tension of the specimen is greater than that of the surrounding medium. In contrast, liquid moves out of the specimen into the surrounding medium as long as the suction tension of the surrounding medium is greater than that of the specimen. These equalization processes are completed when the tension of the specimen and the surrounding medium are equal.
The suction tension of porous materials depends on their porosity and the liquid content. Materials with small capillaries generate a greater suction tension from materials with larger capillaries with the same liquid content. If a porous material with defined capillaries is used as the test specimen, it can be assumed that in a certain range of values of the suction tension of the surrounding medium, the liquid content of the test specimen is dependent on this suction tension. In addition to liquid-filled capillaries, there are also capillaries that are filled with air or another gas from the environment and vapors. In contrast to the capillaries filled with liquid, these contribute little or no contribution to the electrical conduction. The more capillaries are filled with liquid, the greater the electrical conductivity of the porous material of the specimen. The fewer capillaries that are filled with the liquid, the lower the electrical conductivity of the porous material of the specimen.
If it is assumed that the liquid in the specimen has a defined conductivity, a measurement of the specific resistance of the porous material of the specimen can be used to determine its liquid content and consequently the suction tension of the specimen.

The US patent USOO7705616B2 describes the matrix potential sensor and its concrete structure with plaster tablets, a pair of concentrically arranged ring electrodes and the perforated metal housing with a fleece insert.
Against the background of the prior art, the present invention is based on the object of creating a simple electrical measuring method and a matrix potential sensor in order to establish the relationship between matrix potential and electrical conductivity and to provide it in a compact housing as a sensor for measurements. Known disadvantages of the standard measurement method are to be compensated for or avoided. The object is achieved with the features of the invention by a matrix potential sensor according to patent claim 1. The subclaims describe possible implementations.
The invention accordingly relates to a matrix potential sensor for determining the suction tension of a medium with a first sample body which is hydraulically coupled to the medium and which contains at least one absorbent first matrix material, the electrical resistance of the first sample body depending on the suction tension of the medium hydraulically coupled to it .
The object of designing such a sensor as simple as possible and in such a way that measurements are made possible precisely and without falsification is achieved according to the invention in such a way that a first pair of electrodes with a first electrode and a from this spaced second electrode is provided, which are connected to at least one electrical power source and between which an electrical current is generated through the first matrix material by the power source, and that on or in the first sample body for measuring a voltage drop, a second pair of electrodes with a third Electrode and a fourth electrode spaced therefrom is provided, all electrodes being arranged separately from one another, in particular the first and second electrodes electrically with the third and fourth electrodes within the first sample body exclusively by means of a matrix material are connected.
The object can also be achieved in an alternative representation of the solution form in that a first pair of electrodes with a first electrode and a second electrode spaced apart from this are provided in or on the first sample body to measure the electrical resistance of the first sample body, which is provided with at least one electrical power source are connected and between which an electrical current is generated through the first matrix material by the power source, and that on or in the first sample body for measuring a voltage drop a second pair of electrodes is provided with a third electrode and a fourth electrode spaced therefrom, the first and the second electrode and its leads are spaced from the third and fourth electrodes and their leads within the matrix material.
Due to the design and arrangement of the electrodes described, falsifications of the measurement, which could arise from parasitic resistances and capacitances as well as from electrochemical effects on the electrodes, can be largely avoided. With the first pair of electrodes, a current with a controllable current strength can reliably be impressed / generated in the matrix material. By choosing a suitable power source, for example with a sufficiently high internal resistance and / or by providing a sufficiently high series resistance, for example also by choosing suitable materials with a sufficiently high electrical resistance for the first and second electrodes and / or by using a current control the current intensity can be determined with sufficient accuracy and also kept constant. This also applies to changes in the contact between the matrix material and the electrodes of the first electrode pair. Such changes can occur relatively easily because the electrodes are merely plugged into the matrix material and the matrix material is not necessarily solid. The matrix material can also be present at least partially as bulk material or as a pressed quantity of bulk material. The line resistance of each of the electrodes, in particular the first and second electrodes, including their leads, can be between 500 ohms and 500 kilohms between the end arranged in the test specimen and the end connected to a measuring circuit. Such values can be achieved through the use of conductive polymer electrodes. For this purpose, for example, the polymer can be filled with a conductive material. By generating such lead resistances, the current through the specimen is additionally stabilized, even if the contact resistance changes.
Because the voltage measurement is implemented independently of the current impression, the voltage measurement can be optimized for itself become. Electrochemical effects on the electrodes can thus either be eliminated or at least stabilized / kept constant so that they do not influence the individual measurements. The electrodes for voltage measurement also do not have to be connected to the matrix material with a low resistance, so that the measurement can still be carried out reliably even if the contact is not optimal.
A special embodiment of the sensor can provide that the arrangement of the two pairs of electrodes is designed as a four-conductor arrangement.
The four-wire arrangement describes the arrangement of the four individual electrodes of the two mentioned electrode pairs, each of which is individually arranged separately in the specimen, and of which in particular each has its own supply line to the control and evaluation circuit.
An implementation of the invention can also provide that the first and / or the second pair of electrodes is designed as a pair of polymer electrodes.
Such polymer electrodes can consist of a material that is already partially conductive, or the material can be filled with a conductive material such as carbon. Some plastics, ceramics or even rubber can be used as the basic material.
Another possible implementation can provide that, in addition to the first sample body, at least one second sample body with at least one second matrix material is provided, with a third pair of electrodes with a fifth electrode and one spaced apart from it to measure the electrical resistance of the second sample body sixth electrode is provided, which are in particular identical to or connected to the first and second electrodes, which are connected to at least one electrical power source and between which an electrical current is generated through the second matrix material by the power source, and that on or in the second sample body for measuring a voltage drop, a fourth pair of electrodes with a seventh electrode and an eighth electrode spaced therefrom is provided, the fifth and sixth electrodes and their leads from the seventh and eighth electrodes and their Z u lines are spaced apart, in particular within the matrix material, or wherein the fifth and sixth electrodes are electrically connected to the seventh and eighth electrodes within the second sample body exclusively by means of a matrix material and wherein in particular the first matrix material is different from the second matrix material.
With the arrangement described, the resistance measurement and thus the measurement of the suction tension in the matrix sensor is possible simultaneously or one after the other on several test bodies. These can have different matrix materials which, for example, have different porosity or contain different types or admixtures of salts that make the penetrating liquid conductive.
The electrodes of the second sample body can be applied separately from those of the first sample body, but the same electrodes of the first pair can easily be used for the current impression for both a first and a second sample body. In such a case, the third pair of electrodes is the same / identical to the first pair of electrodes or represents extensions of the electrodes of the first pair of electrodes up to the second sample body.
It can also be provided that the at least one power source is set up to generate alternating current loads with a pulse group duration between 1 millisecond and 500 milliseconds and pauses between the pulse groups, the duration of which is longer than the duration of the pulse groups, in particular longer than twice or five times the pulse group duration , further in particular longer than 5 or 10 seconds.
In order to avoid any stress or change in the physical conditions on the electrodes of the first or third pair of electrodes, a time-limited and possibly repeated alternating current signal is used for the measurement. The pauses between the pulse groups are intended to calm down and normalize the matrix material and the contact point between the matrix material and the electrodes.
The invention also relates to a method for operating a matrix potential sensor hydraulically coupled to a medium with at least a first and a second pair of electrodes, the electrodes of which are arranged in or on a first matrix material of a first sample body separately or at a distance from one another, with the process an electric current is generated by means of the first pair of electrodes in the first matrix material of the first sample body and a voltage drop in the first matrix material is measured by means of the second pair of electrodes, an alternating current with a pulse group duration between 1 millisecond and 500 milliseconds being generated by means of the first pair of electrodes, wherein during the time the Alternating current flows, a voltage drop in the first matrix material is detected by the second pair of electrodes and the current parameters and the measured voltage parameters are linked and an electrical resistance of the first matrix material is determined from these.
Die erfassten Strom- und Spannungswerte werden gesondert einem Microcontroller zugeleitet, der aus den Werten einen elektrischen Widerstandswert und aus diesem einen Wert für die Saugspannung im Probenkörper und in dem Medium ermitteltThe recorded current and voltage values are sent separately to a microcontroller, which uses the values to determine an electrical resistance value and, from this, a value for the suction voltage in the specimen and in the medium
Another possible implementation of such a method can provide that the method described above is repeated after a pause, the duration of which is longer than the duration of the pulse group, in particular longer than twice or five times the pulse group duration, further in particular longer than 5 or 10 seconds.
With such a pulse duty factor between the “bursts”, i.e. the pulses of a first pulse group, those of a subsequent pulse group and the pause in between, a permanent change in the electrical conditions during operation at the electrodes is avoided.
Another possible implementation can also provide that the method described above is carried out one after the other or simultaneously on different matrix materials in different test bodies of the matrix potential sensor.
In this way, on the one hand, the reliability of the measurement can be increased by parallel measurements, or the measuring range can be expanded when using different matrix materials.
In addition to the sensor and the measuring method, the invention also relates to a sample body for a matrix potential sensor of the type described above with a first matrix material which has a porous base material, in particular a ceramic or a plastic, through which a salt, in particular potassium sulfate, is permeated.
By penetrating the matrix material with a water-soluble material that influences the electrical conductivity, when the water penetrates the matrix material, a defined conductivity of the liquid is achieved at the latest when the solution is saturated, so that from the conductivity of the matrix material enriched with the liquid the degree of filling with the liquid can be determined. Various porous materials such as sintered ceramics or pressed plastic granulates can be used for the matrix material, each of which can be interspersed or filled with salts.

According to the present invention, the measurement is carried out in the matrix material, for example on electrodes made of a conductive polymer material using a four-conductor arrangement. The measurement is controlled by a microcontroller and the measurement signal is evaluated in the microcontroller. This also eliminates interference using reference measurements. For the measurement, an AC voltage signal is applied to the control lines of the measuring fields, i.e. the connection lines of the electrodes of the first and possibly the third pair of electrodes, which consists of short pulse groups (total length e.g. 5 ms) and relatively long pauses (e.g. 10 seconds) in between. This minimizes the power consumption considerably and allows it to be used as a self-sufficient sensor node.
Die Elektroden können mitsamt ihren Zuleitungen aus demselben Material, also dem leitenden Polymermaterial, bestehenIn order to avoid interference from the exposed, conductive electrodes made of polymer material, they are provided with an insulating coating outside of the matrix material. The electrodes, together with their leads, can consist of the same material, that is to say the conductive polymer material
The matrix measuring field, i.e. the volume of the respective sample body, is filled with a material mixture of calcium sulfate and a granular filler, which forms a porous medium. The granularity of the filler can be selected according to the desired measurement range of the suction tension. Through individual material combinations and mixing ratios, for example between a filler and an added salt, the measuring range can also be adapted to the respective application. By using several measuring fields or specimens - which can also be filled with different matrix material or the combination of different material mixtures within one measuring field, a finely graduated adjustment of the measuring range is possible.
The invention comprises a measuring method, a device for determining the suction tension in the surrounding medium by means of a matrix potential sensor, as well as the material combinations in the matrix measuring field / sample body.
When the equalization process of the penetration of the measuring field / specimen with the liquid of the medium has been completed, the suction tension of the test specimen corresponds to the suction tension of the surrounding medium. The conductivity of the liquid in the test specimen should be defined by the use of a special salt at least in the local area in which the conductivity measurement takes place and should be set independently of the suction tension. For this purpose, the use of calcium sulphate as a component of the measuring field / sample body is known, which forms a saturated solution in the water and, due to the strong dissociation of the water, ensures a high conductivity of the liquid as long as it is aqueous in nature. The calcium sulphate dissolves in the water and ionizes it, so that a saturated solution is created and the conductivity of the specimen can thus be measured regardless of the presence of other substances in the water. The conductivity of the matrix material of the specimen changes with increasing water content / liquid content in the matrix material and there is thus a relationship between the measured conductivity and the suction tension.
The electrical conductivity is determined by means of an electronic circuit controlled by a microcontroller. Electrical and electrochemical effects must be taken into account when designing the circuit and making electrical contact with the test specimen, as well as when selecting the measurement voltage.
When an electrical voltage is applied, an electrochemical double layer forms between the matrix material of the specimen and the material of the electrical contact. Together with the conductive liquid, every electrical contact to the material of the specimen results in an arrangement that includes a double-layer capacitance, a pseudocapacitance due to redox reactions and a resistance in parallel. These effects are to be taken into account in a simple measurement of the resistance according to the prior art on a test specimen containing liquid by means of two applied electrical conductors and superimpose the measurement effect through an electrical resistance between the electrical conductor and the test specimen, which is caused, among other things, by the current flow and by the Duration of the current flow depends, through an electrical capacitance between the electrical conductor and the test specimen filled with liquid and through an electrochemical charging voltage.
According to the prior art, an alternating voltage signal is applied to matrix potential sensors and the complex resistance of the test specimen can be calculated by measuring the voltage drop across a reference resistor. However, this complex resistance also includes line resistances, line capacitances and contact resistances, which have a considerable influence on the measurement result. These named disruptive influences are avoided or minimized according to the invention.
Despite the inexpensive production of gypsum block sensors and the simple electrical evaluation, the accuracy and the measuring range of the known sensors are limited. Their characteristic values depend on the material mixture (porosity) of the matrix material and the resistance network, which results from the series resistance, line resistance and the resistance of the test specimen itself. As is known from the prior art, these effects impair the measurement accuracy and operating conditions.
The above-mentioned effects, which impair the measurement accuracy, are largely eliminated by using a four-wire measurement according to the invention. Four electrodes are introduced into the sample body in such a way that a first pair of electrodes generates or impresses an electrical current in the matrix material of the sample body when an electrical voltage is applied to the connection lines. A pulse-shaped or a continuous alternating current is passed through the specimen by means of a suitable circuit arrangement. The circuit arrangement is designed in such a way that the amplitude of the current is only slightly or not influenced by the double-layer capacitance, the pseudocapacitance, the direct current resistance and the electrical charging voltage. This is done by so-called current source circuits, by feeding in the potential via a high-ohm external resistor, which serves as a series resistor in front of the specimen. The amplitude of the current can also be measured and regulated to a target value. A second pair of electrodes, which is located in the current path of the specimen, is used to tap off the electrical potential difference with high resistance, which is proportional to the resistance in the interior of the specimen in the electrical current path. The current flow through the Electrodes of this second pair of electrodes is very small and is determined by the internal resistance of the electrical circuit for voltage measurement and by the capacitance of the leads.
The electrical resistance measurement on the specimen is carried out using a symmetrical circuit structure in such a way that an alternating current or alternating current pulses flow through the specimen. DC components are largely suppressed. As a result, there are almost no redox reactions at the electrodes, as would be the case with the use of a direct current source. Consequently, the measurement of the electrical potential through the electrically conductive polymer electrodes is also carried out with a symmetrical circuit arrangement, so that any currents flowing into the measuring circuit are compensated for in the following half-cycle of the alternating voltage or the pulsed alternating voltage and effectively no electrical charge remains.
This four-wire technique for measuring the specific resistance, known from classical electrical engineering, is of particular importance in this application because, in addition to reducing the influence of lead and contact resistances, as in classical electrical engineering, it also significantly reduces the effect of an electrical charging voltage on the first pair of electrodes is or the effect of an electrical charging voltage on the second pair of electrodes mutually compensated and thus ineffective. The arrangement also develops advantages particularly when the contact conditions between the electrodes and the matrix material, which can be present as a bed, for example, are not optimally defined or are not very stable.
A preferred variant of the arrangement uses electrically conductive electrodes made of polymer material, e.g. carbon-filled polymer. This has the advantage that the corrosion effects known from metals, which can lead to a reduced electrode area, changes in the electrochemical effects or mechanical destruction of the electrodes, do not occur. In addition, the electrodes and, if necessary, their leads can be used as a series resistor for the current injection. In addition, environmentally friendly thermal recycling of such sensors is easier after the end of their use. The use of polymers as materials for the construction of the sensors enables the construction of completely biodegradable or inert sensor elements. Both the sensor housing and the electronics can be made of compostable or inert materials and enable environmentally friendly degradable electronic systems, which can, for example, be thermally recycled or composted at the end of their service life.
The present solution also allows an application-specific measuring range setting through the use of several specimens with different matrix material mixtures. The measuring range can thus be adapted to the requirements and a large measuring range can be covered by superimposing or combining the measured values from different matrix measuring fields. The use is not limited to the material of the floors.
