Description
The present invention is based on a method for producing an interface-optimized membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell and a membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
In addition to the electric drive, the hydrogen drive via fuel cells has proven to be a promising, environmentally friendly alternative to internal combustion engine-powered drives. In order to keep the hydrogen propulsion form competitive, however, it is necessary to increase the energy balance when converting chemical energy into electrical energy. In particular, the core of every fuel cell, the membrane electrode unit, is the subject of intensive research. To improve the energy balance, approaches have already been taken to optimize the interfaces between the structures involved. As a key result, it was possible to show that an increase in the surface area by structuring the membrane / catalyst interface in the order of magnitude of 1 to 10 µm leads to a significantly improved performance of a fuel cell. In order to enlarge the interface between the membrane and the catalyst layer, the structure of the membrane surface has so far mainly been investigated in the prior art, whereas finely structured modifications of the catalyst surface are not known up to now. By means of the known methods for structuring membrane surfaces it is possible to increase the surface area of the interfaces between the membrane and the catalyst structures, but the known methods lack the possibility of a precise adjustment and variation of the restructuring concerned.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
According to a first aspect, the subject matter of the invention is a method having the features of the independent method claim and, according to a second aspect, a membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell. Further features and details of the invention emerge from the respective subclaims, the description and the drawings. Features and details that are described in connection with the method according to the invention naturally also apply in connection with the membrane electrode unit according to the invention and vice versa, so that with regard to the disclosure of the individual aspects of the invention, reference is or can always be made to each other.
The method according to the invention for producing an interface-optimized membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell serves in particular to optimize the performance and the energy yield of fuel cells or to optimize the conversion rates of the reactions taking place in fuel cells. The advantage of the present method is to be seen, in particular, in the fact that its application enables a much more targeted and precise setting and variation of surface modifications of a membrane / catalyst layer interface to be achieved and thus an energy yield and the performance of fuel cells to be optimized even further.
The method according to the invention for producing an interface-optimized membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell comprises the step of producing an electrode material for the membrane electrode unit of the fuel cell, comprising a catalyst material and an additional material for structuring an electrode layer, the step of applying the electrode material to a carrier surface or GDL surface for Production of the electrode layer, the step of treating the electrode material to produce a structure within the electrode layer and the step of connecting the structured electrode layer to a membrane to produce a membrane electrode unit. Here, the method in question is characterized in that the additional material is formed according to the invention in the form of pore formers.
The method according to the invention is particularly suitable for producing interface-optimized electrode units for a fuel cell, but it can also be used for producing interface-optimized electrode units for electrolyzers. In the context of the invention, a structuring according to the invention is understood to mean a structuring with recesses at least on the upper nanometer to lower micrometer scale. The catalyst material in question can in particular comprise carbon nanoparticles, platinum nanoparticles and ionomers. When an electrode material is produced according to the invention, the electrode material can preferably be presented in the form of a typical slurry. The additional materials are then preferably added to this slurry and mixed with the slurry.
With a view to structuring an electrode layer as effectively as possible, it can be provided according to the invention in particular that the additional materials are shaped spherically and / or fiber-like. In the context of the invention, a spherical shape is understood to mean a shape that has an at least comparable length / width Has ratio, ie preferably a length / width ratio between 3 and 0.3. Exemplary shapes can in particular be spherical, egg-shaped, parallelepiped, cubic or also mixed shapes of the shapes mentioned. In contrast, fiber-like structures have a large length / width ratio of more than 3 or less than 0.3.
In the context of structuring an electrode layer that is as effective as possible, it is also conceivable that the additional materials have an average diameter between 0.2 and 10 μm, preferably between 0.5 and 5 μm. Additional materials formed like fibers preferably have a length between 1 μm and 1 mm, in particular between 5 μm and 50 μm.
In the context of the invention, additional materials in the form of polymers, in particular made of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylate, polystyrene, polyacrylic acid, PET, PEO or PVC have proven to be particularly suitable. Likewise, according to the invention, the additional materials can also be formed in the form of other polymers, for example cellulose or the like. Alternatively, the additional materials or the pore formers can also be present in the form of monomeric units, for example in the form of monomeric sugar units or salts, such as halides, nitrates, sulfates or sulfides or the like. It goes without saying that a combination of different materials can also be used as additional materials.
With a view to the simplest, fastest and most uncomplicated production of a membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell with optimized interfaces, it can furthermore be provided according to the invention that the carrier surface is in the form of a microporous layer (MPL), in particular in the form of a composite layer of microporous layer (MPL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL ) is formed.
As part of a particularly material-saving method for producing high-quality, particularly high-quality, interface-optimized membrane electrode units, it can furthermore be provided according to the invention that the electrode material is applied to at least a temporary carrier film. The temporary carrier film can at least partially represent the carrier surface itself. In particular, the temporary carrier film is intended to make it easier to handle and, finally, preferably to be removed again using the method in question before a surface-optimized membrane electrode unit is completed.
To ensure a structured electrode layer arranged at the interface, it is also conceivable according to the invention that the carrier surface is formed in the form of an unstructured electrode layer, the material of the unstructured electrode layer preferably not including any additional materials. This is particularly advantageous in the case of thicker electrode layers, since according to the invention the aim is to enlarge the interface and not, for example, to enlarge the surface of the entire electrode layer. If the surface of the entire electrode layer is enlarged, losses in terms of conductivity are also to be expected, which is disadvantageous.
With regard to a simple and effective way of producing a structured surface, it can furthermore be provided according to the invention that the treatment of the electrode material includes the removal of the additional material, the treatment of the electrode material preferably taking place in a temperature-controlled manner and / or by means of a selective dissolving process. By removing the additional material, the pores or structures provided according to the invention are finally created within the electrode material. In the context of the invention, temperature control can in particular include an increase in temperature, for example by means of a heat flow or exposure to high-energy radiation or the like. A selective dissolution can take place here in particular by adding orthogonal solvents in which the pore formers dissolve but the catalyst materials do not. The selection of the specific treatment method can be based in particular on the respective configuration of the pore formers according to the invention, so that in the case of an embodiment with highly volatile or combustible pore formers, such as cellulose, removal can advantageously take place via thermal treatment, in particular heating, whereas this is the case when using polymers such as polyethylene, for example, more selective solution processes are more suitable. In the case of a combination of different pore-forming materials, a combination of the different methods can also be offered.
As part of a particularly simple solution to an embodiment of the production of an interface-optimized membrane electrode unit, the invention can also provide that the structured electrode layer is connected to a membrane for producing a membrane electrode unit by pressing the structured electrode layer with a membrane film.
Since a simple pressing of the structured electrode layer with a membrane can lead to inadequate filling of the open structures, it is advantageously conceivable according to the invention that the structured electrode layer, prior to being connected to a membrane for the production of a membrane electrode unit, with is coated with an ionomer layer. The ionomer layer can in particular be applied in the form of a thin layer of an ionomer solution. Preferably just enough can be used to fill the open structures. After such a coating has been produced, according to the invention, for example, pressing with a membrane film can then take place. The ionomer or the ionomer layer then also flows into the structure of the electrode layer to a lesser extent, which generally has a positive effect on the charge carrier exchange rates between the interfaces. As an alternative to pressing on a membrane film, for example, the complete membrane can also be applied as a complete component to the structured electrode layer or the structured electrode layers.
The invention also relates to a membrane electrode unit for a fuel cell, in particular produced according to a method described above. Here, the subject membrane electrode unit comprises a first and a second electrode layer and a membrane arranged between the first and second electrode layers, at least one of the electrode layers being in the form of a structured electrode layer and a plurality of pores arranged at the interface between the electrode layer and the membrane for Has enlargement / optimization of the interface between the structured electrode layer and the membrane. The present membrane electrode unit thus has the same advantages as have already been described in detail with regard to the method according to the invention for producing a membrane electrode unit with optimized interfaces.
The pores arranged within the structured electrode layer have an objectively comparable size to the pore formers used according to the corresponding production method. The pores thus advantageously also have a size of 0.2 to 10 μm, preferably 0.5 to 5 μm. When using additional materials formed like fibers, the pores accordingly preferably have a length between 1 μm and 1 mm, in particular between 5 μm and 50 μm. Optionally, to improve the connection between the structured electrode layer and the membrane or to improve the filling of the pores of the structured electrode layer, an ionomer layer can be provided which is at least partially arranged between the structured electrode layer and the membrane. Furthermore, a unit composed of a microporous layer and a gas diffusion layer can preferably be arranged on the first and second electrode layers of the membrane electrode unit in question.
The invention also relates to a fuel cell comprising a membrane electrode unit described above.
