Description
The invention relates to a battery comprising a multiplicity of battery cells, a predetermined number of the battery cells being mechanically braced in each case by means of a mechanical bracing device to form a respective cell stack. The predetermined number is preferably one, two, three or more. In addition, the invention relates to an at least partially electrically driven / operated functional device with such a battery and a method for limiting pressure in such a battery.
A battery within the meaning of the invention comprises a multiplicity of battery cells electrically interconnected with one another, which can be designed, for example, as prismatic cells or as pouch cells. Due to the electrical connection of the battery cells, such a battery can provide an electrical voltage of more than 60 volts and in particular of several 100 volts, for example on the basis of several battery cells, which is why it is then also referred to as a high-voltage battery. The battery cells are preferably arranged next to one another in cell stacks in such a way that the cell poles or electrical connections or contact poles of the battery cells can be electrically connected to one another with little or no additional structural effort. The interconnection can take place, for example, by welding on an electrically conductive contacting means such as, for example, an electrically conductive rail (busbar) or a so-called busbar. With pouch cells, the electrical contacts usually consist of foils that are attached to busbars or busbars.
In such a battery, a multiplicity of battery cell modules with cell stacks can be arranged, which in turn can be electrically connected to one another by means of cell module connectors.
The battery cells of such a battery swell due to operation (so-called swelling). Due to the swelling of the mechanically clamped battery cells, a progressive swelling pressure acting on the battery cells is generated in the cell stack, which can cause deformation of the individual battery cells and ultimately a deformation of the mechanically clamped cell stacks made up of battery cells, which in particular leads to relative movements between the cell poles and leads the electrically conductive rails welded to the cell poles or otherwise firmly connected. This deformation of the cell stacks is usually counteracted by means of mechanical bracing devices. In basically known arrangements, such a bracing device can have, for example, limiting elements and tension elements and be designed to transmit a bracing pressure to the cell stack.

Although the known solutions by means of the resilient pressure plates described allow a certain flexibility with regard to a directed introduction of pressure into a respective cell stack, they have the common disadvantage that the total pressure acting on the battery cells as the sum of a respective clamping pressure and a respective operationally-related swelling pressure as a result of the progressive Swellings of the individual battery cells can increase indefinitely over the number of charging cycles inside a respective cell stack. This disadvantageously leads to increased wear on the battery cells.
The invention is based on the object of reducing the pressure-related wear of battery cells of a battery of the type described above.
The invention is based on the knowledge that the service life of a battery cell can be positively influenced by the fact that a pressure acting on it is not only distributed as homogeneously as possible and kept as constant as possible over its entire service life, but also by the fact that a respective maximum permissible pressure level is not is exceeded.
The object is achieved by the subjects of the independent claims. Advantageous further developments of the invention are described by the dependent claims, the following description and the figures.
The invention provides a battery of the type described at the outset with a multiplicity of battery cells mechanically braced to one another to form cell stacks. In the battery according to the invention, due to the effects described above, a respective clamping pressure of the clamping device and a progressive swelling pressure generated by an operationally-related increase in volume of the battery cells add up to a total pressure acting on a respective cell stack. A force initially acting purely through the clamping pressure on the battery cells of the cell stack can be, for example, 3 to 7 kN, in particular 5 kN. Starting from this value and due to the progressive increase in pressure, the total pressure acting on the cell stack increases steadily over the total service life of the battery cells of the cell stack.
According to the invention, the battery has a pressure limiting device for limiting the total pressure to a maximum permissible limit pressure. The maximum permissible limit pressure is preferably below a battery-specific and known critical pressure load and preferably corresponds to a force acting on the battery cells of a maximum of 20 kN, preferably between 10 and 15 kN. The maximum permissible limit pressure is therefore a predetermined maximum pressure value that a person skilled in the art can define. The pressure-limiting device can therefore limit the force acting on the battery cells to a value of at most 15 kN and preferably to a value of 10 or even 8 kN.
According to the invention, the pressure limiting device has at least one pressure limiting element, a respective pressure limiting element being arranged between at least two or some or each of the battery cells and / or a respective terminal battery cell of the cell stack and a bracing plate of the bracing device that is arranged adjacent to the respective terminal battery cell and assigned to it. A bracing plate or end plate of the bracing device can be implemented, for example, by a metal plate or a plastic plate. In other words, a respective pressure-limiting element can be designed as an intermediate element or an intermediate layer between the respective battery cells of the cell stack. As such an intermediate layer, the respective pressure limiting element can be inserted, for example, when assembling the cell stack at the desired positions between the battery cells and / or between a respective terminal battery cell and the bracing plate of the bracing device assigned to it.
According to the invention, the respective pressure limiting element has an elasticity and is designed to be plastically deformed when the predetermined maximum limit pressure is exceeded or at the moment when this elasticity is maintained. In other words, the pressure-limiting element is a fundamentally elastic element or component which is elastically deformed as a result of a pressure load and, when the pressure load ceases, endeavors to take on an original shape again or to return to the original shape that it had before the pressure load. In other words, the pressure-limiting element exerts a restoring force when it is pressed together. However, if the total pressure acting on the pressure-limiting element now exceeds the value of the maximum permissible limit pressure, the pressure-limiting element is plastically deformed. When the limit pressure is exceeded, it evades or backs away from the total pressure, so that the total pressure is limited to the maximum permissible limit pressure. In the course of the retreat, the pressure-limiting element thus enables the battery cell pressing against it a controlled growth in thickness or a controlled increase in volume. However, the elastic properties of the pressure-limiting element do not change as a result of the plastic deformation. Only a new operating point of the elastic pressure-limiting element is established, which is adapted to the enlarged battery cell. The restoring force exerted by the pressure limiting element is therefore retained despite the plastic deformation.
The invention results in the advantage that the application of pressure to the battery cells, which is limited upward over the service life of the battery cells, and a controlled increase in volume of the battery cells is made possible. In this way, the service life of the battery cells can advantageously be increased and wear can be reduced.
The invention also includes embodiments which result in additional advantages.
The operation-related increase in volume of the battery cells takes place preferably progressively and in successive cycles. A respective cycle comprises a swelling and a decongesting interval, which follow one another in the manner of an inhalation and an exhalation. The swelling interval can be associated, for example, with a charging process of a respective battery cell, while a respective decongesting interval can be associated with a discharging process of the respective battery cell. In the course of the swelling interval, the respective battery cell swells compared to an initial thickness. In the course of the swelling interval, the respective battery cell swells down to a final thickness different from the initial thickness. The initial thickness thus corresponds to a thickness of the respective battery cell at the beginning of the respective cycle, and the final thickness corresponds to the thickness of the respective battery cell at the end of the respective cycle. The final thickness is greater than the initial thickness. In other words, the battery cell has a greater thickness overall after the end of a respective cycle than at the beginning of the respective cycle. In other words, there is a progressive growth in thickness or a progressive increase in volume of the respective battery cell. The progress of the growth in thickness is superimposed by the cyclical breathing of the respective battery cell. According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the elastic pressure-limiting element accompanies precisely this cyclical breathing of the respective battery cell. The pressure-limiting element is accordingly designed to be elastically compressed by the swelling, independently of a respective current total pressure, and to expand when the swelling decreases. As a result, a predetermined counter pressure opposite to the respective current total pressure acts on the respective battery cell for an entire duration of the respective cycle. As described above, the pressure compensation element deforms plastically at the moment in which the current total pressure exceeds the predetermined and maximum permissible limit pressure. However, since the described elasticity remains independent of the respective current total pressure, the described embodiment advantageously enables the elastic accompaniment of the breathing of the respective battery cell to be continued even after a respective plastic deformation. Thus, in an advantageous manner, uncontrolled swelling of the respective battery cell after plastic deformation has taken place is avoided.
The elasticity and the plastic deformability that occurs when the limit pressure is exceeded are preferably caused by a material of the at least one pressure limiting element. For example, a metal or a metal alloy or a plastic or a fiber composite material can be provided as the material. A structural condition of the elasticity is also conceivable and can be implemented, for example, by predetermined weak zones of the pressure limiting element.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the at least one pressure-limiting element is designed as a leaf spring or a spiral spring or a corrugated sheet metal or as a composite of several cup springs. In the case of the composite, the interaction of several disc springs is to be understood as a single pressure-limiting element that can generate a pressure point at the respective positions of the disc springs. To set a local spring stiffness, the surface density of the disc springs can be specified accordingly.
Since the described operation-related increase in volume of a respective battery cell does not generally work homogeneously or uniformly along a circumference of the respective battery cell, but on the contrary, in the course of the operation-related increase in volume, the respective battery cell is preferably inflated in a central area of the battery cell, it is according to one In an advantageous embodiment, the elasticity of the at least one pressure limiting element varies along a plane which runs perpendicularly with respect to the total pressure acting on the pressure limiting element and / or perpendicularly with respect to the clamping pressure. For this purpose, it can be provided, for example, that the composite of several disc springs provides a denser arrangement of disc springs in an area of increased elasticity than in an area of lower elasticity, where a less dense or loose arrangement of disc springs can be provided. It can also be provided that the elasticity is varied over structurally weakened areas of the pressure limiting element. This can be, for example, slotted or perforated areas of a corrugated metal sheet. This has the advantage that the restoring force acting on the swelling battery cell, which is caused by the elasticity of the pressure limiting element, is distributed homogeneously along the plane.
In the event that a respective pressure-limiting element is formed from a metal or from another thermally conductive material, a preferred embodiment provides that adjacent battery cells of the cell stack are thermally insulated from one another by means of intermediate layers arranged between the adjacent battery cells. A respective intermediate layer is therefore preferably formed from a thermally insulating material. A respective intermediate layer preferably has a minimum thickness which is, for example, in a range from 0.5 to 1.5 mm, preferably 1 mm. The thermally insulating material preferably has a coefficient of thermal conductivity between 0.004 and 0.04 watts per meter and Kelvin (W / m * K). A ceramic layer, for example, can be provided as a possible thermally insulating material.
According to a preferred development, the respective intermediate layer is made from a compressible material. For example, a plastic or a synthetic resin or a polyurethane can be used as the compressible material. The compressible intermediate layer described is preferably compressible in thickness by at least 5%, 10%, 15% or more in a pressure range which is less than the predetermined maximum permissible limit pressure. In this way, deformation of the battery cells can advantageously be absorbed by the intermediate layer.
According to a preferred embodiment, at least one frame is arranged as a spacer element between at least two or some or each of the battery cells and / or a respective terminal battery cell of the cell stack and a bracing plate of the bracing device which is arranged adjacent to the respective terminal battery cell and is assigned to it, as a spacer element, which has a that is, in the frame, arranged pressure-limiting element and delimits a free space kept free from the tensioning pressure. This results in the advantage that an operational deformation or increase in volume of the battery cells can take place within the free space between the battery cells that is kept free from the clamping pressure, without the deformation leading to a deformation in the form of a linear expansion of the cell stack. The position of the cell poles of the battery cells remains unchanged. Since the free space is kept free from the clamping pressure in this embodiment, the clamping pressure can correspond to the maximum permissible limit pressure.
In addition, the invention comprises an at least partially electrically driven / operated functional device with a battery. The functional device is preferably an at least partially electrically driven motor vehicle. The motor vehicle is preferably designed as a motor vehicle, in particular as a passenger vehicle or truck, or as a passenger bus or motorcycle, which has an at least partially electric drive. The functional device can, for example, also be an electrical stationary storage device.
The invention also includes a method for limiting a total pressure acting on a cell stack of a battery, the cell stack comprising a plurality of battery cells mechanically clamped together by means of a clamping device, the clamping device transmitting a clamping pressure to the battery cells of the cell stack, the clamping pressure is supplemented by an increasing swelling pressure generated as a result of a progressive swelling of the battery cells caused by operation to the resulting total pressure acting on the cell stack.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a pressure limiting device for limiting the total pressure to a maximum permissible limit pressure is provided for the battery. Here, at least one pressure limiting element of the pressure limiting device is arranged between at least two or some or each of the battery cells and / or a respective terminal battery cell of the cell stack and a clamping plate of the clamping device which is arranged adjacent to the respective terminal battery cell and assigned to it. According to the invention, the respective pressure limiting element has elasticity and is plastically deformed when the predetermined maximum limit pressure is exceeded, that is to say at the moment of exceeding, while maintaining the elasticity. This limits the total pressure to the maximum permissible limit pressure. In other words, the total pressure is kept in a pressure level range or pressure range between the clamping pressure and the maximum permissible limit pressure. In other words, a pressure plateau arises at the level of the maximum permissible limit pressure, from which it is possible to deviate downwards, but not upwards. In other words, the force acting on the battery cells remains constant until a respective charging process has ended and the force decreases again with the discharge.
