Disposable items for the consumption of hot beverages have become more and more popular in the recent past and are now heavily criticized because, at least in the public perception, they have a significant share in the pollution of the urban habitat and rarely that Find the way to material recycling.
The prior art describes various solutions for use as beverage cups for hot drinks and associated lids. The best-known variants are probably paper cups with a plastic inner coating, which often consists of polyethylene, and deep-drawn cups made of polystyrene. Polystyrene is currently the preferred cover material. The paper cups with a plastic inner coating, which is required to prevent the cup from soaking within a very short time, have the disadvantage that they are not suitable for mechanical recycling. The combination of plastic and paper is so stable that it is currently not possible to separate it using economical methods, and only the thermal recycling of such plastic-coated paper cups remains. If such cups get into the environment, the paper is degraded by biological processes in a manageable time, while the plastic film remains behind and only slowly disintegrates, whether its small thickness mostly results in small and very small plastic fragments, so that it leads to an emission of "microplastics" the environment contributes. A significant biodegradation will therefore not take place in a cup made of polystyrene or similar artificial, polymeric materials.
In the prior art one already finds proposals for disposable articles, in particular disposable cups and associated lids (as well as preliminary products for their manufacture) which are suitable for filling cold drinks and under certain conditions - currently mostly only under industrial conditions, i.e. at comparatively high temperatures> 50 ° C - compostable and thus at least partially biodegradable.
If one modifies PLA and produces, for example, so-called “c-PLA” (crystalline PLA), which is known to the person skilled in the art, significantly higher heat distortion temperatures can be achieved. However, this advantage usually requires longer cycle times and, among other things. for this reason high production costs.
It was therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide articles such as disposable articles which avoid the known disadvantages of the prior art and, in particular, are characterized by one or more, ideally all, of the properties mentioned below: high heat resistance, preferably a heat resistance temperature of 95 95 ° C, sufficient strength and very good biodegradability, so that they are suitable, for example, for filling hot beverages. Another specific object of the present invention was to provide suitable preliminary products and processes for the production of such articles or disposable articles and the preliminary products.
- - As a polymer component, a polymer (preferably in the form of a matrix) comprising at least one polyhydroxyalkanoate and
- - As the first filler component, at least one particulate inorganic material (preferably arranged, particularly preferably uniformly or homogeneously distributed, in the matrix defined by the polymer component) in a total amount in the range of 5-40% by mass, based on the total mass of the composite material.
The composite material according to the invention is outstandingly suitable for the production of films or multilayer film composites, which can be used as precursors for the production of single-use articles with high heat resistance and good biodegradability.
The invention and combinations of preferred parameters, properties and / or components of the present invention which are preferred according to the invention are defined in the appended claims. Preferred aspects of the present invention are also specified or defined in the following description and in the examples.
Polymers (plastics) based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), also known as polyhydroxy fatty acids (PHF), are already known as such. PHA are naturally occurring, mostly linear, rarely branched polyesters, which consist of or include saturated and unsaturated hydroxyalkanoic acids (also: hydroxy fatty acids). A large number of combinations of different hydroxyalkanoic acid monomers is thus possible, so that PHA can be present not only as mono- but also as copolymers. This large number of different monomers that build PHA, in turn, ensures a large number of possible PHA plastics by means of variations in their linkage (s) with one another and their (quantity) ratio to one another in the polymer. In general, PHAs are water-insoluble, thermoplastic, non-toxic and biodegradable. All of the aforementioned PHA plastics are therefore fundamentally suitable for use as a polymer component of the composite material according to the invention, with those polyhydroxyalkanoates which are particularly suitable for this purpose being specified below.
The polyhydroxyalkanoates to be used according to the invention as a polymer component of the composite material can be produced in such a way that they have sufficient strength or rigidity suitable for the target applications according to the present invention. The very good compostability and biodegradability of the polyhydroxyalkanoates to be used according to the invention is also advantageous, even under moderate conditions, i.e. at around 20 ° C to 30 ° C, i.e. temperatures as they are achieved with self-composting (garden compost).

- comprises at least one particulate inorganic material which is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate and inorganic silicates, the first filler component preferably comprising at least one particulate inorganic material which is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, talc, talc, kaolin, iron mica , Wollastonite mica, muscovite mica, phlogopite mica and their mixtures and / or
- is contained in the composite material in a total amount in the range of 10-30 mass%, preferably 15-25 mass%, based on the total mass of the composite material.
It was found in our own investigations that the heat resistance of the composite material according to the invention or of the preliminary products produced therefrom, such as films or multilayer film composites, is significantly increased if the first filler component in a total amount in the range from 5 to 40% by mass, based on the total mass of the composite material , is used. The best compromise between the good processability of the composite material or the preliminary products and their good heat resistance was obtained if the first filler component in a total amount in the range of 15-25 mass% (about 20 mass%), based on the total mass of the composite material, was used.
It was also found that particulate inorganic material with a high average aspect ratio of its particles as the first filler component gives the composite material according to the invention or the preliminary products produced therefrom, such as films or multilayer film composites, and the articles made therefrom, such as disposable articles, particularly good strength properties.
In the context of the present invention (as is customary in the field), the “aspect ratio” is preferably understood to mean the ratio between the length (height) and the (smallest) lateral extent of a particle (particle) under consideration.
In the context of the present invention (as is customary in the field), the “average aspect ratio” is preferably understood to mean the average value of the aspect ratios of a plurality of particles present in a sample. For the purposes of the present invention, the average aspect ratio is preferably determined by dynamic image analysis of a plurality of particles, preferably using an automated particle measuring device such as e.g. the Particle Sizer Analyzer 28 ImageSizer from Fritsch GmbH, Germany.
- - Which is selected from the group consisting of talc, kaolin, iron mica, wollastonite mica, muscovite mica, phlogopite mica and their mixtures and / or
- - whose particles have an average aspect ratio of ≥ 5: 1, preferably ≥ 7: 1 and particularly preferably ≥ 10: 1.
Particulate inorganic materials which are suitable as first filler components to be used according to the invention are known to the person skilled in the art and are commercially available in particle shape and size suitable for the purposes of the present invention, e.g. from the company Kärntner Montanindustrie GmbH, Wolfsberg, Austria.
The composite material according to the invention preferably comprises, in particular for further Improvement of the biodegradability or compostability of the composite material or the preliminary products produced therefrom, such as films or multilayer film composites, and the articles produced therefrom, such as disposable articles, as a second filler component, at least one particulate, preferably fibrous, cellulose-containing material. Suitable cellulose-containing materials in the context of the present invention are, in particular, cellulose-containing, vegetable natural fibers which have a size suitable for incorporation into a composite material and / or a film.
For example, covers of disposable cups are generally thin-walled throughout, while the disposable cups themselves often have thick-walled areas, such as a thick-walled upper edge, which are intended to contribute to the stability of the cup. So that e.g. Even such thick-walled areas of disposable items such as disposable cups can be composted as completely and reliably as possible, according to the invention a composite material suitable for their production is provided, which preferably comprises such a second filler component.
Thus, a composite material according to the invention or a composite material according to the invention described above or below as preferred is preferred, additionally comprising at least one particulate cellulose-containing material, preferably as a second filler component (preferably arranged, particularly preferably uniformly or homogeneously distributed, in the matrix defined by the polymer component) in a total amount in the range of 5-35 mass%, particularly preferably 10-35 mass%, very particularly preferably 10-25 mass%, based on the total mass of the composite material.
Mit (weiter) steigendem Gehalt an zweitem Füllstoffbestandteil nimmt die Verarbeitbarkeit in der Regel eher ab.It has been shown in our own investigations that an addition of 5% by mass, based on the total mass of the composite material, of a particulate cellulose-containing material such as one or more natural fibers has a positive influence on the compostability of the composite material according to the invention or on the basis thereof has pre-products such as films or multilayer film composites as well as the articles made therefrom such as disposable articles. Our own studies have further shown that preliminary products such as films or multilayer film composites produced from the composite material according to the invention or articles made therefrom such as disposable articles, which had a material thickness of> 1 mm, with the addition of a particulate, cellulose-containing material (natural fiber) as a second filler component, reliably compost (ie biodegradable) in the range of 10 to 35 mass% (about 30 mass%), based on the total mass of the composite material. When adding a particulate cellulose-containing material (natural fiber) as a second filler component in the range of 10 to 25 mass% (about 15 mass%), based on the total mass of the composite material, the most favorable ratio of processability and compostability was found in our own experiments . As the content of the second filler component increases, the processability tends to decrease.
- - comprises one or more natural fibers and / or
- - is selected from the group consisting of wood, flax, hemp, sunflower seed pods, bamboo, jute, kenaf, ramie, coconut fibers, fibers of stems of the gorse plant, fibers of stems of the hop plant, fibers of leaves and fruit stands of cattail reeds, and their mixtures,
The present invention also relates to a film or plate, preferably a thermoformed film or plate, comprising or consisting of a composite material according to the invention described above or of a composite material according to the invention described above as preferred. Such a film or plate can be obtained, for example, from the composite material according to the invention by an extrusion process known per se.
With regard to preferred configurations of a film according to the invention mentioned here, the explanations given above for the composite material according to the invention, in particular with regard to possible preferred embodiments and possible or preferred combinations, apply accordingly (if appropriate analogously) and vice versa.
If a composite material according to the invention, or a preliminary product produced therefrom, such as a film, is to be further processed into an article (such as a disposable article) which is intended for the filling or storage of foods, for example hot beverages, it is important that such an article does not cause any undesirable organoleptic influences or impairments of the food.
In particular, in order to keep such an undesirable organoleptic influence or such an undesirable organoleptic impairment of food as small as possible and, in the ideal case, to completely exclude it from such an article (for example disposable articles such as disposable cups), the film according to the invention specified above (for example a thermoformed film) can also be used in one Multi-layer composite are used, in which at least one additional layer of a, preferably biodegradable, polymer, in particular a, preferably biodegradable, polyester is applied to at least one surface side or on both surface sides of a film according to the invention (then used, for example, as a middle layer) become.
- a film (s) specified above (or a film (s) specified above as preferred) according to the invention and
- - Applied to and / or connected to at least one surface side of the film, at least one additional layer, preferably film layer, comprising at least one polymer comprising polyester, preferably selected from the group consisting of polyhydroxyalkanoates, polybutylene adipate terephthalate, polybutylene succinate, poly (butylene succinate adipate) ) and their mixtures.
With regard to preferred configurations of a multilayer film composite according to the invention mentioned here, the explanations given above for the composite material according to the invention and for the film according to the invention apply, in particular with regard to possible preferred embodiments and possible or preferred combinations, accordingly (if appropriate analogously) and vice versa.
- at least one additional layer, preferably a film layer comprising at least one polymer comprising polyester, is applied to both surface sides of the film and / or is connected to it, and / or
- - The film according to the invention has a mass fraction of the multilayer film composite of ≥ 60%, preferably ≥ 70%, and / or

Additional additional layers can be applied to the additional layers, but this configuration is not preferred.
A further advantage of the multilayer film composite according to the invention is that by applying additional layers on the film according to the invention, the optical perception of the multilayer film composite can also be influenced in a targeted manner. For example, a thin outer layer on the film according to the invention, e.g. can make up less than 10% of the total thickness of the multilayer film composite and e.g. consists of or contains one of the polymers or polyester described above, a significant increase in the degree of gloss can be achieved, which is often regarded as desirable on an article produced from the multilayer film composite.
The present invention also relates to an article, preferably a disposable article, particularly preferably a beverage mug or a beverage mug component (such as in particular a lid), comprising or consisting of a film according to the invention or a film according to the invention described above as preferred or a multilayer film composite according to the invention or one above as the multilayer film composite according to the invention described as preferred.
