Description
The invention relates to a method for identifying the composition of a rubber mixture. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method and a corresponding use.
Rubber products are manufactured in industry using a long process chain with various manufacturing steps. These manufacturing steps include, for example, mixing rubber blend components in a mixer, extruding the blended rubber blend in an extruder, calendering the extruded rubber blend, or vulcanizing a fully molded and tailored rubber blend profile with other tire components to a pneumatic vehicle tire. The two main manufacturing steps are batch mixing, i.e. the production of the rubber mixture, and the mostly continuously operated extrusion of the rubber mixture produced. These two main manufacturing steps follow one another in the production chain of technical rubber articles. Since the rubber mixture can only be mixed in batches, a continuous overall manufacturing process for rubber products is not possible. For this reason, a freshly produced batch of freshly mixed rubber mixtures, also known as a batch, often has to be stored at least temporarily, before it is subsequently subjected to the continuous process of extrusion and the further continuous process steps. Since batchwise addition of the rubber mixture batch for extrusion is therefore inevitable, so-called mixture transitions occur in the extruded rubber mixture during continuous extrusion. Due to the inherent flow dynamics in an extruder, these mixture transitions are not abrupt or follow a sharp boundary, but are difficult to calculate and of different lengths due to the turbulence within the extruder. This means that when changing from a rubber mixture with a first composition to a rubber mixture with a different composition, long and labor-intensive measuring steps are often necessary to determine when the rubber mixture in the extruder no longer has the first composition. In these measuring steps, disk-shaped sections extending over the entire diameter are usually cut out of the extrudate manually and analyzed until an analysis shows as reliably as possible that less than 5% of the rubber mixture with the first composition is still present. This may take several days. This process is not only time and energy consuming, but also means that a large part of the usable rubber mixture has to be disposed of and thus pollutes the environment.

An object on which the invention is based is to provide a method which can recognize the transition from a rubber mixture with a first composition to a rubber mixture with a different composition more quickly and reliably and / or which can be fully automated. Another object of the invention is to reduce the amount of waste that occurs when measuring a transition from a rubber mixture with a first composition to a rubber mixture with a different composition.
- A) providing or producing at least one rubber mixture comprising at least one carbon black or at least one metal oxide or at least one semimetal oxide,
- B) extruding the at least one rubber mixture prepared or prepared in step A) through at least one extruder of an extruder unit,
- E) removing a sufficient part of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) by means of one or more than one laser so that a plasma results from the removed part of the rubber mixture,
- F) measuring the atomic emission lines of the resulting plasma by means of one or more than one spectrometer and
- G) assigning the atomic emission lines of the resulting plasma measured in step F) to a composition of a rubber mixture.
It is a great achievement of the present invention to have recognized that a first rubber mixture comprising at least one carbon black or at least one metal oxide or at least one semi-metal oxide, which represents a majority of the rubber mixtures used in the rubber industry, from a second rubber mixture with a different concentration of that a soot or the one metal oxide or the one semi-metal oxide can be reliably differentiated by means of the laser ablation described in step E) and the measurement of the atomic emission lines of the plasma formed in the laser ablation in step F). This process is called "laser induced breakdown spectroscopy" (short: LIBS). Here, a part of the surface of the rubber mixture, which is hit by a sufficiently strong laser, is heated so strongly that this part of the rubber mixture changes into the gaseous state and forms a plasma due to the high temperatures. Depending on which chemical elements or molecules were present in the part of the rubber mixture which had passed into the gaseous state, their element or molecule-specific atomic emission lines in the plasma can be reliably measured down to the ppm range using a spectrometer described below. On the basis of the method according to the invention, the transitions of the rubber mixtures after the extrusion can be determined fully automatically, quickly and reliably. In addition, less rubber compound has to be disposed of. This not only has the advantages described above in terms of energy consumption and the environment, but also increases the protection of workers in the rubber processing industry. In addition, the continuous manufacturing step can thus be carried out with fewer interruptions. This has advantages in particular in the production of so-called multi-component tire components, since mixture changes are particularly common in their production.
A commercially available LIBS analyzer is preferably used to carry out step E) and step F) of the method according to the invention, for example the LIBS device with the product name “Plus Laser Metals Analyzer Model 4240” from “TSI GmbH”.

- E) removing a sufficient part of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) or guided in step C) or shaped in step D) by means of one or more than one laser so that a plasma results from the removed part of the rubber mixture,
- F) measuring the atomic emission lines of the resulting plasma by means of one or more than one spectrometer and
- G) assigning the atomic emission lines of the resulting plasma measured in step F) to a composition of a rubber mixture.
An advantage of the method according to the invention is that the commercially available LIBS measuring devices are relatively small and can therefore be integrated at any point in the manufacturing process. It may happen that the measurement of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) shows that the transition between the two different rubber mixtures has already taken place completely, but the measurement in the pre-template in step C) or between the pre-template and the end template is different Result displays. In addition, the composition of a rubber mixture can be measured at several points in the manufacturing process. These aspects enable a quality check at various points in the manufacturing process.
A process as described above or as described above as preferred is preferred, the rubber mixture prepared or prepared in step A) not comprising any carbon black. It has so far been difficult or impossible to distinguish rubber mixtures without carbon black. Conductivity measurements in particular were not helpful here.
- E2) Removing a sufficient part of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) or guided in step C) or shaped in step D) comprising at least one carbon black or at least one metal oxide or at least one semimetal oxide by means of one or more than one laser, so that a plasma results from the removed part of the rubber mixture,
- F2) measuring the atomic emission lines of the at least one carbon black or the at least one metal oxide or the at least one semi-metal oxide in the resulting plasma by means of one or more than one spectrometer and
- G2) assigning the atomic emission lines measured in step F) to a composition of a rubber mixture with the aid of the intensity of the atomic emission lines of the at least one carbon black or the at least one metal oxide or the at least one semimetal oxide.
- Before the extrusion, a reference spectrum of the mixtures A and B to be extruded is recorded. The ratios of the signal intensities of at least 2 elements are determined for both mixtures. For example, the emission line of silicon at 634.7 nm and sulfur at 561.6 nm are suitable. The ratios of the signal intensities of element
1 to element2nd describe the characteristic composition of the mixture. The Elements1 and2nd must be chosen so that the intensities of the emission lines in mixture A and B differ. The difference in signal intensities of at least one of the elements between mixture A and B should preferably be at least 20%. A method according to the invention as described above or as described above as preferred is therefore preferred for reasons of the minimum requirement of the signal intensity, steps E) to F) of a method according to the invention being carried out on a first rubber mixture of the at least one rubber mixture and at least on a further rubber mixture of the at least one Rubber mixture are carried out, the ratio of the concentration of the tracer compound in the first rubber mixture to the concentration of the tracer compound in the second rubber mixture in the range of 10: 1, 1, preferably in the range of 7: 1.5, particularly preferably in Range of 5: 2.
In the context of the present invention, the term “rubber mixture” encompasses in particular rubber mixture batches or also mixed rubber mixtures, it being possible for the rubber mixture to be sulfur-crosslinkable, extrudable, extruded and / or shaped. Molded rubber compounds are also called rubber profiles in the context of the present invention. Extruded rubber mixtures are also called extrudates in the context of the present invention. A rubber mixture batch is the whole of the mixing lump mixed in one batch in a mixing process.
- - Cutting out a disc-shaped section, preferably with a thickness of 1 com, from an extruded or already molded rubber mixture, the two coplanar main surfaces of the disc having been cut along the cross section of the extruded or already molded rubber mixture and the center of the disc on the center axis of the extruded or already molded rubber mixture,
- - Mix the disc in a mixer until the connection to be measured is homogeneous the rubber mixture created from the disc is distributed,
- - Analysis using ICP-OES or other suitable analysis methods to determine the concentration of the compound in the rubber mixture formed from the disc.
In this way, in particular, two different connections can be measured in order to determine the ratio of these two connections along the cross-section of the rubber mixture, i.e. to determine the ratio of their cross-sectional concentrations.
A process as described above or as described above as preferred is preferred, one of the at least one metal oxide or semimetal oxide of the rubber mixture prepared or prepared in step A) SiO 2 , a metal oxide with an alkali metal, a metal oxide with an alkaline earth metal and / or Metal oxide with a metal of the transition metals of the fourth period of the periodic table, SiO 2 and / or ZnO, CaO, MgO, NaCl, KCl, TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 being preferred as the semimetal oxide, one or all of the following metal oxides being preferred preferred are: ZnO, TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 . SiO 2 and / or ZnO is very particularly preferred as the at least one metal oxide or semimetal oxide, since they additionally cause the typical filler effects and can therefore also be used as these.
An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that these oxides can be used in a large part of the rubber mixtures used today and a method according to the invention can reliably and precisely determine their concentrations.

The metal oxides described above or described above as preferred or particularly preferred are preferably present in a total amount in the range from 0.01 to 10 phr, preferably in the range from 0.05 to 5 phr, particularly preferably in the range from 0.1 to 1 phr . ZnO can be present in a total amount in the range from 0.01 to 10 phr, preferably in the range from 0.05 to 5 phr, particularly preferably in the range from 0.1 to 1 phr. Here, SiO 2 can be present in a total amount in the range from 0.01 to 200 phr, preferably in the range from 1 to 100 phr, particularly preferably in the range from 10 to 50 phr.
- DE) removing a section of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) or guided in step C) or molded in step D),
- E1) removing a sufficient part of the rubber mixture section removed in step DE) by means of one or more than one laser so that a plasma results from the removed part of the rubber mixture.
Due to the inherent flow dynamics in an extruder, these mixture transitions between two rubber mixtures are not abrupt or follow a sharp boundary, but are random, difficult to calculate and of different lengths due to the turbulence within the extruder. The exact structure of these mixture transitions depends not only on the extrusion parameters of the extruder but also on the composition of the rubber mixture. An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that information about the composition inside or the core of an extruded rubber mixture can also be obtained in this way. The transition from one rubber compound to another can thus be determined even more reliably than described in the above aspect of the present invention. Measuring the chemical composition at various points along the cross-section represents a long-standing need for quality control in the rubber industry.

An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that an accurate concentration gradient of the measured carbon black or the measured oxide can be determined along the cross section of the rubber profile.
- a part of the surface of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) or guided in step C) or molded in step D) and / or
- - At least part of the inner core of the rubber mixture extruded in step B) or directed in step C) or molded in step D)
An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that, as already described above, a transition from one rubber mixture to another can thus be determined even more reliably.

An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that in particular lasers with the properties described above generate a particularly intense plasma and thus make a method according to the invention even more sensitive.
- - The laser is followed by a poly- or monochromator and / or
- - The spectrometer is designed to measure electromagnetic radiation in the range from 200 nm to 1100 nm.
An advantage of the above-described aspect of the present invention is that, in particular, spectrometers with the above-described properties are particularly good at detecting atomic emission lines of a previously described carbon black, a previously described metal oxide and / or a previously described semimetal oxide and thus make a method according to the invention even more sensitive.

- - In step E) the distance between the laser and the rubber mixture to be removed is in the range from 0.1 to 10 mm, preferably exactly 0.4 mm, and / or
- - With multiple removal according to step E) and measurement according to step F), the distance between the individual measuring points at which rubber mixture was removed is in the range from 1 to 10 mm, preferably exactly 4 mm.
An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that the measurements become more reliable than with a different distance between the laser and the rubber mixture to be removed or with a different distance between the individual measuring points.
A method as described above or as described above as preferred is preferred, wherein during step E) and / or during step F) a protective gas is sprayed onto the focal point of the laser on the part to be removed. The volume flow of said protective gas from a nozzle or another opening at 25 ° C. and normal pressure is preferably in the range from 0.1 l / min to 100 l / min, particularly preferably in the range from 1 to 10 l / min, i.e. the gas pressure with which the protective gas leaves the nozzle or other opening corresponds to approx. 0.2 bar. Said protective gas preferably consists mainly or entirely of helium, argon or nitrogen, with argon being particularly preferred.
An advantage of the aspect of the present invention described above is that the measurements become more sensitive since the background or the noise of the measurement is lower than in a method according to the invention without protective gas. It is thus also possible to identify rubber mixtures which are difficult to measure, in particular rubber mixtures which comprise more than one type of rubber such as NR, BR and SBR.
