Description
The invention relates to an active material for an electrode of an electrochemical cell which is provided on at least part of the surface of the active material with a covalently bonded monomolecular layer, hereinafter also referred to as monolayer (so-called "monolayer"), an organic compound which is capable of alone and / or in the presence of further compounds to form a covalently bonded solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of the active material. The subject matter is also a process for producing such an active material and its use for the production of electrodes and electrochemical cells.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Während des Be- bzw. Solid State Ionics 148, 2002, 405). Electrochemical cells for reversibly storing electrical energy usually comprise at least two electrodes comprising active materials. Frequently, metal oxides and / or metal phosphates are used as active materials, in particular for the production of the positive electrode (also referred to below as the cathode) of electrochemical cells. During the loading or unloading process, lithium ions are usually stored reversibly in the active materials or released from the active materials. If such an electrochemical cell is charged in the presence of an electrolyte composition for the first time in the course of precharging or forming, a so-called solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms on the surface of the active material which comes into contact with the electrolyte composition. This solid electrolyte layer is formed from decomposition products of the electrolyte composition. It is ionic and permeable to lithium ions (see Solid State Ionics 148, 2002, 405). It is known from the prior art that the selective addition of additives to the electrolyte composition is suitable for controlling the properties of the SEI.
For high performance electrochemical cells, it is essential that the SEI be thermally and mechanically stable. In particular, a volume change of the active material that occurs during the loading and unloading operations must not lead to breakage or spalling of the SEI.

In one embodiment of the invention, the active material is first provided with the coating according to the invention and then applied, optionally together with binders and / or conductive additives in the form of an active material composition on the current collector.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the uncoated active material is optionally suspended together with binders and / or conductive additives in a suitable solvent, the solvent comprising a compound of general formula (XVII). The suspension is then applied in a slurry process on the surface of the current collector, for example by doctoring or rolling. Subsequently, the solvent and optionally excess compound of the formula (XVII) is removed, for example by reducing the pressure and / or increasing the ambient temperature. During the slurry process, the coating is applied in situ on the active material.
In a further alternative embodiment, the uncoated active material is optionally applied to the current collector together with binders and / or conductive additives in a conventional process. This is then brought into contact with the compound of formula (XVII). This can be done, for example, by containing the compound of formula (XVII) in an electrolyte composition. The electrode is then immersed in the electrolyte composition, optionally at elevated temperature, so as to form the monolayer of the compound of formula (XVII) on the surface of the active material. Subsequently, the electrode can be formed / preloaded as usual.
In a further preferred embodiment of this embodiment, the electrolyte composition comprises the abovementioned additives which form a stable, covalently bonded SEI in combination with the active material according to the invention. Preferably, in this case, the electrode is first immersed in the electrolyte composition without the application of a voltage to allow the formation of the monolayer. After preferably 1 to 60 minutes, the electric voltage for forming the electrochemical cell is then applied and the SEI is formed.
The electrochemical cell according to the invention advantageously finds use in an electric vehicle (EV), in a hybrid vehicle (HEV), in a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), in a tool or in a consumer electronics product. Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
The active material according to the invention is characterized by a defined monolayer of a compound which covalently fixes an SEI-forming functional group on the surface of the active material. This makes it possible to control the properties of the active material relative to the environment defined. In particular, by a targeted formation of the active material, preferably in the presence of an electrolyte composition containing further SEI-forming additives, a defined solid-electrolyte interphase can be formed on the surface of the active material, which is also covalently bonded to the surface of the active material. The SEI thus obtained is therefore characterized by a particularly high mechanical and thermal stability and also persists during volume changes of the active material. In addition, by the implementation, the number of present on the surface of the active material OH groups reduced. In an electrochemical cell, such OH groups tend to react with electrons to hydrogen, which in turn can negatively affect the performance of the electrochemical cell. The formation of hydrogen is thus reduced or completely prevented by the SET according to the invention.

Ausführungsformen der ErfindungEmbodiments of the invention
Herstellung einer Verbindung der Formel (XVII):Preparation of a compound of formula (XVII):
Compounds of formula (XVII) can be prepared by conventional chemical reactions. The components R 50 , Q and Z are usually chemically bonded together individually. For example, starting from a halogen-substituted radical Z and a mono-halogen-substituted radical Q, a reaction is carried out. Decisive here is that the radical Q has a further functional group which survives this reaction unscathed, for example, an olefinic group. Subsequently, for example by means of a hydrosillylation, the radical A can be attached to this functional group chemically.
The reaction scheme is not limited to the starting materials shown but can be transferred to a variety of different compounds.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein and the aspects highlighted therein. Rather, within the scope given by the claims a variety of modifications are possible, which are within the scope of expert action.
