Description
The invention relates to a method for exhaust gas aftertreatment of an internal combustion engine and an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for carrying out such a method according to the preamble of the independent claim.
The current exhaust gas legislation, which will become increasingly stringent in the future, places high demands on raw engine emissions and exhaust gas aftertreatment of internal combustion engines. The demands for a further decrease in consumption and the further tightening of the exhaust gas standards with regard to the permissible nitrogen oxide emissions represent a challenge for the engine developers. In gasoline engines, exhaust gas cleaning is carried out in a known manner using a three-way catalytic converter and the three-way Catalyst upstream and downstream further catalysts. Exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are currently used in diesel engines, which have an oxidation catalytic converter, a catalytic converter for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR catalytic converter) and a particle filter for the separation of soot particles and, if appropriate, further catalytic converters. Ammonia is preferably used as the reducing agent. Because the use of pure ammonia is complex, a synthetic, aqueous urea solution is usually used in vehicles, which is mixed with the hot exhaust gas stream in a mixing device upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. This mixing heats the aqueous urea solution, the aqueous urea solution releasing ammonia in the exhaust duct. A commercially available, aqueous urea solution generally consists of 32.5% urea and 67.5% water.

The invention is based on the object of preventing the discharge of ammonia from the SCR catalytic converter in an exhaust gas aftertreatment system with an SCR catalytic converter and thus being able to use the complete catalytic converter volume to convert nitrogen oxides.
- - Dosing a reducing agent into the exhaust duct of the internal combustion engine, the bypass being closed and the exhaust gas flow of the internal combustion engine through the Exhaust duct is passed, the SCR catalyst is loaded with ammonia,
- Determining a loading state of the ammonia loading of the SCR catalyst,
- - Switching to bypass operation when the internal combustion engine is operated in an operating state in which ammonia breakthrough through the SCR catalytic converter or another SCR catalytic converter connected downstream of the SCR catalytic converter is to be expected.
A method according to the invention makes it possible to fully load the SCR catalytic converter with ammonia and to avoid an increase in tailpipe emissions. A discharge of ammonia from the SCR catalytic converter through the exhaust gas flow guidance of the internal combustion engine is completely avoided. If ammonia is nevertheless discharged from the SCR catalytic converter, the ammonia can be oxidized by the oxidation catalytic converter and does not end up in the environment as tailpipe emissions.
The features listed in the dependent claims enable advantageous improvements and non-trivial further developments of the method for exhaust gas aftertreatment of the internal combustion engine listed in the independent claim.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the flow rate of the exhaust gas flow through the SCR catalytic converter is controlled or regulated by a control element in the bypass. A control element in the bypass enables simple, reliable and cost-effective distribution of the exhaust gas flow between the exhaust duct and the bypass. The bypass has a lower flow resistance than the SCR catalytic converter, so that a significant part of the exhaust gas flow is passed through the bypass. In particular, the amount of exhaust gas and the speed of the exhaust gas flow can thus be controlled by the SCR catalytic converter in order to achieve the best possible conversion of the pollutants. Alternatively, the control element can also be arranged on a branch at which the bypass branches off from the exhaust gas duct or at a junction at which the bypass re-opens into the exhaust gas duct. By means of a control element, in particular an exhaust gas flap on the branching, the exhaust gas flow can be varied independently of the flow resistance of the exhaust gas duct and the bypass. In addition, the control element is arranged upstream of the metering element in order to avoid uncontrolled turbulence immediately upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. Furthermore, a control element on the branching makes it possible to reduce the exhaust gas flow via the SCR catalytic converter to such an extent that, by convection and heat radiation, the partial flow reaches the temperature range required for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides, preferably to a temperature of less than 450 ° C. at the entrance to the SCR catalyst to cool down.
In a further embodiment of the invention, it is advantageously provided that the control element is arranged at the branching of the exhaust gas duct and the bypass upstream of the SCR catalytic converter or at the junction of the bypass and exhaust gas duct downstream of the SCR catalytic converter. In this way, the exhaust gas flow can be reduced to a minimum via the SCR catalytic converter.
In an advantageous embodiment of the method it is provided that the switchover to the bypass operation takes place when a particle filter arranged in the exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine is regenerated. Regeneration of the particulate filter leads to an increase in the exhaust gas temperature. In order to regenerate the particulate filter, exhaust gas temperatures of more than 600 ° C. and the presence of oxygen in the exhaust gas are prerequisites in order to be able to oxidize the soot particles retained in the particulate filter. At these exhaust gas temperatures, an efficient exhaust gas aftertreatment of the nitrogen oxide emissions by the SCR catalytic converter is no longer possible, since ammonia is thermally decomposed above approximately 450 ° C. Therefore, it makes sense, particularly when the particle filter is being regenerated, to pass at least a portion of the exhaust gas flow through the bypass in order to be able to operate the SCR catalytic converter in the optimum temperature range for converting nitrogen oxides. For this purpose, the branch in the bypass is arranged at least 5 cm, better 10 cm, ideally 15 cm in front of the metering valve, so that the exhaust gas is cooled down to the desired temperature range due to convection and heat radiation.
In a preferred embodiment of the method it is provided that the flow rate through the SCR catalytic converter is reduced in order to prevent ammonia discharge from the SCR catalytic converter and to increase the residence time of the exhaust gas as it flows through the SCR catalytic converter. A reduced flow rate increases the duration of the exhaust gas in the SCR catalytic converter, which increases the conversion rate of the nitrogen oxide emissions.
In an alternative embodiment of the method it is provided that the temperature of the SCR catalytic converter is kept below a defined threshold temperature in order to prevent thermal decomposition of the ammonia retained in the SCR catalytic converter. This is the branching of the exhaust duct and bypass at least 5cm, better 10cm, ideally 15cm in front of the metering valve, so that the exhaust gas is cooled down to the desired temperature range due to convection and heat radiation.
According to the invention, an exhaust gas aftertreatment system for an internal combustion engine, which is connected with its outlet to an exhaust gas system, is proposed, wherein in the exhaust gas system downstream of a turbine of an exhaust gas turbocharger at least one SCR catalytic converter with an SCR catalytic converter downstream of an exhaust gas through an exhaust gas duct of the exhaust gas system Locking catalyst is arranged. The exhaust system comprises a metering element with which a reducing agent can be metered into the exhaust duct upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. Furthermore, the exhaust system has a bypass, which can bypass an exhaust gas flow of the internal combustion engine past the SCR catalytic converter. The internal combustion engine is connected to an engine control unit, which is set up to carry out an inventive method for exhaust gas aftertreatment when a machine-readable program code is executed by the engine control unit.
In a preferred embodiment of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, it is provided that the blocking catalytic converter comprises an oxidation catalytic converter. An oxidation catalytic converter can convert pollutant emissions from unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and ammonia so that they are not emitted to the environment as tailpipe emissions.
Alternatively or additionally, it is advantageously provided that the blocking catalytic converter comprises a further SCR catalytic converter. An additional barrier catalytic converter makes it particularly easy to load the SCR catalytic converter up to its storage limit. Excess ammonia is stored in the second SCR catalytic converter and can be used there for selective, catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. At the same time, the amount of reducing agent metered in is reduced in order to be able to adapt the amount of reducing agent introduced to the ammonia requirement required for the selective, catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.
In a preferred embodiment of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, it is provided that the control element in the bypass, at the branching of the bypass from the exhaust duct or at the confluence of the bypass with the exhaust duct is designed as an electrically switchable exhaust flap. An electrical exhaust flap allows the exhaust gas flow of the internal combustion engine to be divided into the exhaust duct and the bypass in a simple and reliable manner. Furthermore, the flow rate of the exhaust gas through the SCR catalytic converter can thus be reduced in order to increase the conversion line of the SCR catalytic converter and / or to avoid the discharge of ammonia.
In a further improvement of the invention it is provided that an exhaust gas mixer is arranged in the exhaust gas duct downstream of the metering element and upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. An exhaust gas mixer can achieve a homogeneous distribution of the reducing agent in the exhaust gas stream before it enters the SCR catalytic converter. The length of the mixing section can be shortened by the exhaust gas mixer in order to achieve such a homogeneous distribution. As a result, the SCR catalytic converter can be arranged closer to the outlet of the internal combustion engine, which promotes heating of the SCR catalytic converter after a cold start of the internal combustion engine.
