Description
Technisches GebietTechnical area
This disclosure generally relates to an aftertreatment system, an engine assembly, and related methods, and is particularly, although not exclusively, concerned with the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter.
Hintergrundbackground
A diesel particulate filter collects soot discharged from an internal combustion engine. The soot can be burned off regularly, i. the filter can be 'regenerated'. This typically requires periodic intervention by an engine management system, e.g. injecting fuel late in the engine combustion cycle. The temperature at the output of the internal combustion engine is then raised and a part of this fuel also leaves the internal combustion engine, whereupon it burns in an oxidation catalyst, whereby the exhaust gas temperature is further raised to ~600 ° C ('hot regeneration'). Part of the post-injected fuel may drain down past the piston rings, causing oil dilution and potentially jeopardizing engine lubrication.
There is little room for maneuver. For example, if the post-injected fuel quantity is reduced on the one hand, the exhaust gas may not be hot enough. On the other hand, if regeneration is not frequent enough, too much soot could be retained and combustion of the additional soot could exceed a temperature limit for the filter. This is made worse by the use of newer filters with thinner, more porous walls.
Darstellung der ErfindungPresentation of the invention
- Regenerating the diesel particulate filter in a first mode in which soot collected at the diesel particulate filter is primarily oxidized by nitrogen dioxide, wherein the first mode is in a first temperature range and is maintained in a substantially steady state for a first time period; and
Regenerating the diesel particulate filter in a second mode in which soot collected at the diesel particulate filter is primarily oxidized by oxygen, the second mode occurring in a second temperature range hotter than the first temperature range and a second stationary duration in substantially steady state is held.
The aftertreatment system may further include a selective catalytic reduction device. The diesel particulate filter may be located upstream, integral with or downstream of the selective catalytic reduction device. The method may include inhibiting (e.g., preventing, limiting or reducing) introduction of a selective catalytic reducing agent into the selective catalytic reduction apparatus during at least a portion of one or more regeneration operations in the first mode.
The aftertreatment system may further include an oxidation catalyst upstream of the diesel particulate filter.
The method may include selectively recirculating exhaust gases from downstream of the aftertreatment system, e.g. downstream of the diesel particulate filter, to upstream of the aftertreatment system, e.g. upstream of the oxidation catalyst. The recycling may be in the first mode during one or more regeneration operations. The recirculated exhaust gases can not pass through an internal combustion engine upstream of the aftertreatment system, e.g. handle these.
The aftertreatment system may further include at an upstream end of the aftertreatment system, eg, upstream of the oxidation catalyst, a venturi, eg, a restriction, in the flowpath. For example, during one or more regeneration operations in the first mode, the method may include selectively recirculating exhaust gases from downstream of the aftertreatment system, eg, downstream of the diesel particulate filter, to the venturi throat.

For example, the first regeneration mode may be at temperatures between about 250 ° C and about 500 ° C. The first mode may be in a particular example at temperatures between about 300 ° C and about 400 ° C. The second mode, on the other hand, can be done at temperatures exceeding about 550 ° C. In particular, the second mode may be at a temperature of about 600 ° C.
In the first and second modes, the regeneration may be maintained at a steady state for the first and second time periods, respectively. In other words, the regeneration does not simply go through the first regeneration mode to reach the second hotter regeneration mode, and the regeneration may be held in the first mode for the first time period. The first period may be longer than the second period to maximize soot regeneration at the lower temperatures. The first period may alternatively be shorter than the second period.

Additionally or alternatively, the amount of soot on the diesel particulate filter may be detected with a sensor sending data to the corresponding engine control unit. A regeneration process may be scheduled when the soot reaches a predetermined value. For example, a regeneration process of the first mode may be scheduled when the soot level has reached a first threshold. A second mode regeneration event may be scheduled when the soot level has reached a second threshold that is greater than the first threshold.
With the combination of selective catalytic reduction device and
From the experimental results it is evident that the NO x speciation and the NH 3 reducing agent both have an influence. In the hot regeneration, NH 3 promotes soot oxidation when the NO x is primarily NO. This is at least partly due to the fact that the warm regeneration could not have a noticeable effect on the soot. With NO 2 and equimolar NO x speciation, hot regeneration is less pronounced as much of the soot was burned off during the previous warm regeneration. In fact, when NO x is primarily NO 2 , little soot remains until hot regeneration. This emphasizes the usefulness of the warm regeneration. Even if the warm regeneration can be prolonged, say of a duration of 50 minutes, this period must be balanced against the hot regeneration, which is also more intense though shorter.
The presence of NH 3 reduced soot oxidation during warm regeneration, especially as NO x NO 2 . However, in view of the benefits of warm regeneration, the introduction of a selective catalytic reductant, such as ammonia, during at least a portion of one or more regeneration operations in the first mode may be inhibited (eg, prevented, limited, or reduced). The introduction of the selective catalytic reducing agent can then be resumed after the end of the warm regeneration or during a subsequent hot regeneration.
Similar results may apply to an aftertreatment system with a separate selective catalytic reduction device and diesel particulate filter, e.g. when the selective catalytic reduction device is upstream of the diesel particulate filter. In such an arrangement, accordingly, the introduction of a selective catalytic reducing agent (e.g., ammonia) during at least a portion of one or more regeneration operations in the first mode may also be inhibited.
