Description
The present invention relates to a method for mapping objects in a vector-based representation into objects in a grid-based representation having a plurality of grid cells for use in a driving support system of a vehicle, wherein at least one object in the vector-based representation is based on a vector position and an associated distribution function, and the vector position of the at least one object is transmitted to the grid cells.
Also, the present invention relates to a driving support system for a vehicle, wherein the driving support system is configured to detect objects in an environment of a vehicle in a vector-based representation, and the driving support system is further configured to perform the above method.
Furthermore, the present invention relates to a vehicle having an above driving assistance system.
Driving assistance systems already include widespread driver assistance systems that assist a driver in driving the vehicle. Such driver assistance systems include, for example, parking assist systems or distance warning systems, which are typically active at low speeds, and increasingly assistance systems that typically assist in driving at higher speeds, such as lane change assistance systems and blind spot assistance systems. The driving assistance systems can also provide functions in autonomous vehicles to support an autonomous guidance of the vehicle.
In the prior art drive assist systems, it is often necessary to generate an environment map of a particular vehicle, often referred to as an ego vehicle. The environment map represents a representation of an environment of the vehicle in which objects are displayed or marked in a two-dimensional map. On the basis of this environment map, the driving support systems can perform different support tasks. For example, in autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles, corresponding driving support systems can perform various tasks that are a basis for autonomous or semi-autonomous driving. In this case, the environment map can be provided centrally for common use for several driving support systems.
Sensor information from at least one environmental sensor of the vehicle or of the driving assistance system used in the vehicle is typically used as the basis for creating the environment map. Such environmental sensors can be embodied as an ultrasonic sensor, as a radar sensor or as a LiDAR sensor. Alternatively or additionally, the environmental sensors may include cameras. The environmental sensors are configured to provide sensor information with environmental information about an environment of the vehicle. In this case, sensor information of a plurality of identical or different environmental sensors can be combined. The environment sensors can be assigned to different driver assistance systems together, or only a single.
The environmental sensors typically provide sensor information that specifies objects in a vector notation, that is, a direction and a distance. It can be assumed that each sensor information is loaded with an error. The error can be very different and depend, for example, on a type of environmental sensor, a position of the environmental sensor on the vehicle, a position of an object with respect to the environmental sensor, environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, rain or air density or other factors. Accordingly, each vector is typically assigned information regarding an accuracy of the position of the object. The information relating to an accuracy of the position of the object may be implemented as a distribution function that indicates a spatial uncertainty for this position based on the position of the object. The distribution function is typically not rotationally symmetrical about the determined position, but may in principle be designed differently in different plane directions.
Based on this, it is therefore necessary to transfer the vector-based representation of objects from the sensor information of the environmental sensors into the environment map. The environment map, for example, allows for easy consideration of movement of the vehicle, without having to recreate an existing environment map. For this purpose, a grid-based representation is usually used. In the grid-based representation, an environment of the vehicle is typically divided into uniform, regularly arranged grid cells. Usually, the grid cells have a square shape and are arranged in a regular grid.
A change between the vector-based representation and the grid-based representation is typically associated with a high computational effort.

Based on the above-mentioned prior art, the object of the invention is therefore a method for assigning objects in a vector-based representation to objects in a grid-based representation having a plurality of grid cells for use in a driving support system of a vehicle, a driving assistance system for a vehicle and a vehicle of the above type, which allow a simple and efficient assignment of objects in a vector-based representation in a grid-based representation.
The object is achieved by the features of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the subclaims.
The invention thus provides a method of mapping objects in a vector-based representation into objects in a grid-based representation having a plurality of grid cells for use in a vehicle driving assistance system, comprising the steps of providing at least one object based on the vector-based representation on a vector position and an associated distribution function, transferring the vector position of the at least one object to the grid cells, transferring the distribution function of the at least one object to the grid cells, summing function values of the distribution function of the at least one object for each grid cell from a plurality of grid cells, and assigning the at least one object to the grid cells based on the summed function values of the distribution function.
According to the invention, there is also provided a driving support system for a vehicle, wherein the driving support system is configured to detect objects in an environment of the vehicle in a vector-based representation, and the driving support system is further configured to perform the above method.
Further, according to the invention, a vehicle is provided with an above driving assistance system.
The basic idea of the present invention is therefore to achieve a reliable assignment of objects to the grid cells by using the distribution function together with the vector position of the at least one object in order to determine the occupancy of grid cells with objects. In this case, an expansion of the grid cells is considered in order to determine a detailed occupancy of the grid cells by the distribution function of the at least one object. This is particularly relevant if the distribution function is not circular, but for example has an elliptical shape, so that grid cells at an equal distance from the determined vector position of a each object can be detected differently by the distribution of the expected position of this object. In this case, the distribution function can be considered in detail by adding up its function values for a plurality of grid cells. Based on this, the at least one object is assigned to the grid cells.
In the grid-based representation, an environment of the vehicle is typically divided into uniform, regularly arranged grid cells. Usually, the grid cells have a square shape and are arranged in a regular grid. The plurality of grid cells thus together form a grid. In the grid-based representation, objects are typically assigned to individual grid cells of the grid.
The grid-based representation serves as an environment map or is used to create the neighborhood map. The environment map represents a representation of an environment of the vehicle in which objects are displayed or marked in a two-dimensional map. On the basis of this map of the surroundings, the driving support systems can perform their fundamentally different support tasks.
The processing of sensor signals for the identification of objects can take place in a central processing unit of the vehicle or the driving support system.
Also, sensor information from a plurality of similar or different environmental sensors may be combined to detect objects in the vicinity of the vehicle and to determine their position. The environment sensors can be assigned to different driver assistance systems together, or only a single.
The environmental sensors typically provide sensor information that specifies objects in a vector notation, such as direction and distance. The objects are thus detected with the environmental sensors in a vector-based representation. The objects may be indicated as a direction vector in two-dimensional or three-dimensional representation depending on a corresponding environmental sensor, i. a distance from the vehicle with a direction indication and possibly an additional angle indicating, for example, a height. Corresponding vector representations are known as such.
It can be assumed that each sensor information is loaded with an error. The error can be very different in nature and depend for example on a type of environmental sensor, a position of the environmental sensor on the vehicle, a position of an object with respect to the environmental sensor, environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, rain or air density or other factors , Accordingly, each vector is typically assigned information regarding an accuracy of the position of the object. The information regarding an accuracy of the position of the object is described as a distribution function which, based on a determined position of the object, indicates a spatial uncertainty for this object at the determined position. The distribution function is typically not rotationally symmetrical about the determined position, but may be performed differently in principle in different plane or spatial directions. Elliptical or ellipsoidal distribution functions are common in common environmental sensors. The distribution function is preferably based on a Gaussian bell function.
An important application in the creation of environment maps around an ego vehicle is in a determination of areas of so-called "free space". Freespace is a means to reliably detect objects around the vehicle and to filter out less relevant detections. For example, in areas between an object and the ego vehicle based on various criteria that are not to be discussed in detail here, free space can be defined in order to clean up and delete objects positioned there. If an object is positioned in such a free space area, the object is no longer considered and deleted. The free space is determined cyclically and deleted again, wherein a cycle may include a principle variable time duration in which several signals of an environmental sensor can be considered. Freespace can be easily processed and used in vector-based representation, i. the objects in the free space areas can be removed before mapping to the grid-based representation.
The provision of at least one object in the vector-based representation based on a vector position and a distribution function thus takes place based on the detection of the object with the at least one environment sensor.
Transferring the vector position of the at least one object to the grid cells involves transferring the vector position of the object to the grid without error. There is a mapping in the coordinates of the grid.
During the subsequent transfer of the distribution function of the at least one object to the grid cells, a mapping of the distribution function takes place in the coordinates of the grid.
The summing of function values of the distribution function of the at least one object for a plurality of grid cells serves to detect the distribution function in the grid network. The function values of the distribution function in the individual grid cells indicate a measure of the probability that the object is located in the corresponding grid cell.
The assignment of the at least one object to the grid cells based on the summed function values of the distribution function can take place in different ways. Thus, the object can be assigned to the grid cell, which has the highest function value. Alternatively, other forms of association may be chosen. Also, no one object of a plurality of grid cells are assigned together, or multiple grid cells have the object together.
The driving assistance systems can also provide corresponding functions in autonomous vehicles in order to support an autonomous driving of the vehicle.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method comprises an additional step for scaling the distribution function based on an existence ground. The existential mass is a degree of conviction and is given as a persuasive function. The existence mass acts here as a scaling factor for the distribution. The sum of all function values of all grid cells affected by an object with its distribution function must at least approximately reproduce this existential mass. When summing or integrating the function values of the distribution function for relevant cells, the existence mass of the respective object results at least approximately. The existence mass is a linear factor, so that the scaling can be performed at any time. This is possible because the summation as well as a possible integration include linear functions.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method comprises an additional step of merging summed function values of the distribution functions of a plurality of objects for each grid cell of the plurality of grid cells. Thus, the function values of distribution functions of different objects are considered together in order to determine an occupancy of a grid cell, wherein the occupancy may not necessarily be attributable to a single object due to the merger. Rather, such occupancy may also result from multiple objects detected by the environmental sensors.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the step of merging summed function values of the distribution functions of a plurality of objects comprises merging based on a Dempster-Schäfer modeling. The Dempster-Shepherd theory, sometimes referred to as belief theory, uses instead of probabilities statements about a belief mass, also referred to as existential mass, in English degrees of belief. Uncertain knowledge is determined by a belief function, Engl. belief function, represents. Assumptions can be made about whole sets of statements and not just about a single statement. This is the case, for example, when new information can indicate different statements. The sum does not necessarily have to be one. This is based on the assumption that part of the belief belongs to a hypothesis, without this having to be automatically assigned to the negation of the hypothesis of the remaining beliefs. The existence mass is thus detached, i. not directly dependent on a non-existent mass. A difference between the sum of the two masses and a maximum value that is one indicates a measure of ignorance.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the step of transmitting the distribution function of the at least one object to the grid cells comprises projecting the distribution function onto the plurality of grid cells. Starting from the vector-based representation in objects, the distribution function can be two- or three-dimensional. A projection of a distribution function for Two-dimensional functional values are easy to realize. By projecting the distribution function onto the grid with the grid cells, function values can be formed that are easy to process. The function values result in the grid in a simple way depending on the network coordinates. Preferably, a scaling of the distribution function is performed based on the existence mass, as stated above.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the step of summing functional values of the distribution function of the at least one object for each grid cell from a plurality of grid cells comprises integrating the distribution function of the at least one object for each of the grid cells. The formation of the integral of the distribution function allows a mathematically simple and exact summation of the function values.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the step of integrating the distribution function of the at least one object for each of the grid cells comprises a 2-D Riemann integration. The basic concept of the 2-D Riemann integration is based on forming the integral of the distribution function as a sum of small elements, also called samples or calculation surfaces, in the grid cell. The number of samples can be actively modified to meet different computational time and accuracy requirements. For each sample of the grid cell, it is assumed that the distribution function has a constant function value or a constant height. The height for the sample is the height in the middle of the sample. A volume or integral thus results from a base area of the sample multiplied by its height in the middle thereof.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the 2-D Riemann integration comprises dividing each of the grid cells into a plurality of calculation surfaces, in particular two to twenty calculation surfaces, preferably five to ten calculation surfaces. The number of calculation areas can be selected depending on a desired accuracy and / or available computing power. In addition, an adaptation of the number of calculation surfaces can be done in principle individually for each grid cell or for groups of grid cells together.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method comprises an additional step for identifying relevant grid cells, and the step of summing functional values of the distribution function of the at least one object for each grid cell from the plurality of grid cells comprises summing functional values of the distribution function of the at least one object for each of the relevant ones Includes grid cells. The summing of the function values of the distribution function can be accelerated by taking into account only a selected part of the grid cells for summing the function values. The identification of the relevant grid cells therefore relates to an identification of those grid cells which are relevant to a relevant degree of the distribution function. Otherwise, the function values of the distribution function in the grid cells, ie the non-relevant grid cells, are close to zero, so that they can be neglected.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the step of identifying relevant grid cells comprises detecting grid cells in contact with a maximum spatial extent of the distribution function. The distribution function is usually a continuous function, i. without cracks in the function values that expire asymptotically from a mid-range. Accordingly, a threshold for the function value of the distribution function may be specified, and only grid cells in which the function value is above the threshold are considered to be in contact with the distribution function. Depending on the form of the distribution function, different grid cells can be taken into account. For example, in a circular function, all grid cells would be considered within a predetermined distance from a center of the circle. For example, with an elliptical shape of the distribution function, all of the grid cells within a circle having a maximum distance from a midpoint may be considered relevant. Thus, a circle is formed around the ellipse, which contains the relevant grid cells. This is especially true for an ellipse of greatly varying extents in both plane directions, i. for features with a large spatial uncertainty in one of the plane directions and a low spatial uncertainty in the other plane direction, a rough approximation that requires too large a number of relevant grid cells. This also applies if the plane directions of the grid do not coincide with main axes of the ellipse. According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, a different type of processing is selected for the relevant grid cells. In grid cells with a particularly high relevance, for example in a center of the distribution function, the function values of the distribution function are calculated and summed with high accuracy, while grid cells with a low relevance are detected particularly quickly. This is usually at the expense of accuracy. Based on the relevance, for example, a number of calculation areas can be adapted for the respective grid cell.
