Description
The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for an electric battery, comprising a plurality of individual cells or modules electrically connected in series.
If a battery cell or a battery module fails or is defective, the power that can be called up for the entire battery is considerably reduced due to the increased internal resistance of the defective battery cell. If there is no shutdown in this state, there is a risk of locally severe overheating within the battery, which can pose a safety problem.
Die abrufbare Leistung sinkt stark ab.Batteries are known which consist of several complete partial strands including contactors. A partial string with a defective cell or a defective module can be switched off via the contactor. Several sub-strands including a contactor are required. The available power drops sharply.

The object is achieved according to the invention by a circuit arrangement having the features of
Vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand der Unteransprüche.Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, in a circuit arrangement for an electric battery comprising a plurality of individual cells or modules electrically connected in series, each of the cells or each of the modules has a bypass diode connected in parallel such that an anode of the bypass diode is connected to a negative pole of one of the cells or one of the modules and a cathode of the same bypass diode to a positive pole of the same cell or the same module.
If all cells or modules have approximately the same cell voltage and approximately the same internal resistance, then a current flows in the discharge direction exclusively via the cells or modules and not via the bypass diodes. However, as soon as one of the cells or one of the modules has a lower cell voltage or a higher internal resistance as a result of a defect or aging, the current is divided in this cell or this module and a bypass current flows through the respective bypass diode and a cell current overflows the cell or module. If the current is low, it can continue to flow completely as a cell current over the defective cell or module. Only when the voltage drop across the respective internal resistance due to the flowing current becomes so great that the respective bypass diode opens does the respective bypass diode take over the additional portion of the current as a bypass stream. From this point on, the proportion of cell current remains almost constant. The maximum cell current is thus limited. The same applies to the waste heat generated in the defective cell. In addition, there is the waste heat that arises at the bypass diode. In total, less waste heat is generated at the defective cell and the associated bypass diode than would be generated at the defective cell without a bypass path.
- • The bypass diodes are not connected in series with the individual cells or modules. With an intact battery, they do not influence the efficiency when discharging the battery (driving mode) and have no heat input into the battery. The diodes only become active as soon as a cell or a module is badly aged or defective.
- • The bypass diodes should only be designed for the voltage of the cells or modules connected in parallel.
- • By connecting the diodes in parallel, the waste heat output can be reduced in the case of aged or defective cells or modules. The neighboring cells or modules are protected against overheating and accelerated aging. A fire in the defective cell or module can thus be avoided.
- • The circuit with bypass diodes is passive and can therefore be implemented without evaluation electronics.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, in a circuit arrangement for an electric battery, comprising a plurality of individual cells or modules electrically connected in series, each of the cells or each of the modules has a semiconductor switch connected in parallel, each of the cells or each of the modules being a voltage measuring unit Measurement of a cell voltage or module voltage, wherein a current measuring unit is provided for measuring a current through the battery, at least one control unit being provided which is connected to the voltage measuring unit of one of the cells and to the current measuring unit and is designed to be the semiconductor switch of the same cell opens when a current flows that is or whose absolute value is greater than or equal to a predefinable current threshold value and if the respective cell voltage drops below a predefinable voltage threshold value when the current flows or reaches it.
If all cells have approximately the same cell voltage and approximately the same internal resistance, the current flows in the discharge direction exclusively via the cells and not via the semiconductor switches.
The principle of the circuit from is similar to the principle described above with bypass diodes. However, the bypass diode has a fixed threshold voltage (e.g. -0.7V as the terminal voltage of the defective cell). If the bypass diodes are replaced by semiconductor switches, in particular MOSFETs, any switching threshold can be set by activating the semiconductor switch. Switching thresholds can be implemented that are significantly lower than the threshold voltage of the bypass diodes, which means that the maximum current of a defective cell can be limited to a lower value. This is particularly advantageous when used to bridge battery modules with a defective cell. The fact that the semiconductor switch has no intrinsic threshold voltage means that the waste heat losses in the semiconductor switch and also in the internal resistance are lower, since commutation starts at a lower current value.
In one embodiment of the invention, the semiconductor switches are each designed as a MOSFET.
- • All advantages of switching with bypass diodes are fulfilled.
- • In contrast to the concept with the bypass diodes, a trigger threshold of the semiconductor switches can be freely selected.
- • Compared to the bypass diodes, the waste heat generated in the semiconductor switches and especially in the defective cell can be significantly reduced again.
- • The control circuit of the bypass semiconductor switches does not require any additional measuring devices in the battery. A total current measurement and the voltage measurement of the individual cells or modules are often provided anyway.
In one embodiment of the invention, the MOSFET is an n-channel MOSFET, the source of which is connected to a negative pole of one of the cells and the drain of which is connected to a positive pole of the same cell. In alternative embodiments, other MOSFETs, for example p-channel MOSFETs or IGBT, can also be provided.
In one embodiment of the invention, the control unit comprises a first comparator for comparing the current with the predefinable current threshold value.
In one embodiment of the invention, the control unit comprises a second comparator for comparing the cell voltage with the predefinable voltage threshold.
In one embodiment of the invention, the control unit comprises an AND gate, which logically links outputs of the comparators and is connected to a control input of the semiconductor switch.
