Description
The invention relates to a method for stopping a fuel cell system according to the closer defined in the preamble of claim 1.
From the general state of the art, it is known that the shutdown of fuel cell systems is typically accompanied by mechanisms that adversely affect the life of the fuel cell systems. Essentially, it is about an oxygen-hydrogen front running across the active area of the fuel cell, resulting in oxidation or corrosion of carbon. This serves, inter alia, as a carrier for the necessary catalysts such as platinum, so that these catalysts are mitgeschädigt or discharged. Due to the increasingly reducing amount of catalysts and carbon in the fuel cell, this is impaired in the long term in their lifetime. The process is also known under the term of carbon corrosion or in the English language "carbon corrosion".
The object of the present invention is now to provide an improved method for stopping a fuel cell system with the features in the preamble of claim 1, which minimizes the disadvantages occurring in the prior art and the actually occurring operation of a fuel cell system, in particular a fuel cell system in a vehicle , ensures a long service life of the fuel cell.
According to the invention this object is achieved by a method having the features in claim 1. Advantageous embodiments and further developments emerge from the subclaims dependent thereon.
The inventors have recognized that for the occurrence of carbon corrosion, carbon dioxide can be used on the exhaust air side of the cathode space and on the exhaust side of the anode space as a measure. With this knowledge, they have developed a strategy to ensure the best possible hydrogen protection time and, ultimately, an optimized lifetime of the fuel cell with a correspondingly careful handling of the resource hydrogen, and correspondingly low hydrogen emissions to the environment. They have thereby arrived at the process according to the invention, which, like the prior art processes, leaves hydrogen in the anode compartment of the fuel cell after shutdown, and which replaces hydrogen in the anode compartment at least once to further prevent carbon corrosion in the case of largely depleted hydrogen. According to the invention, in the method, the hydrogen protection time is active after a predetermined number of replenishment is stopped by the cathode chamber is actively acted upon with air. Thus, the method according to the invention uses the findings of the prior art to maintain a hydrogen protection time over a first period of time. Thus, for example, by leaving hydrogen in the anode compartment when the fuel cell is turned off, a hydrogen protection time of the order of magnitude of up to 10 hours can be achieved. If then a subsequent metering of hydrogen, the hydrogen protection time can be extended by a few hours, for example, for about 5 to 7 hours. The times depend in each case on the size and the structural design of the fuel cell and the fuel cell system, since they are related by the corresponding volumes and the number of interfaces and thus the places where it must be sealed against the hydrogen. The numerical values are therefore purely exemplary and to be understood as a rough guide to explain the idea.
In practice, fuel cell systems, especially fuel cell systems used in vehicles, are typically used so that, for example, during the week the vehicle is moved virtually daily. Between the individual useful lives of the vehicle are typically periods of time, which are less than 15 hours, which can be completely covered as a rule by the hydrogen protection time with a replenishment. For example, when the vehicle is in the company parking lot during the work of its owner, on which it has been moved in the morning, and from which it is moved home in the evening. Often it is then so that the vehicle is used again at the end of the day. In practice, the vehicle is then at the maximum of the end of the user's work, for example, 16:00 clock, until this breaks again at 7:00 clock the next morning to work. The period of time is thus about 15 hours and can generally be bridged with a re-dosing of hydrogen, so that during the entire standstill, the hydrogen protection time is present and the carbon corrosion can be completely avoided. The time can be learned, for example, by a detection system over the useful lives of the vehicle in conjunction with weekdays and times, so that it can be decided from this learned behavior, whether typically one or two replenishment, for example, to maintain the hydrogen protection time during normal operation of the vehicle.
If the vehicle is standing longer than usual, the hydrogen protection time is actively canceled. For example, if the vehicle is longer than 18 or 20 hours and with one or two additional dosing the usual life of the vehicle has been completely realized under a hydrogen atmosphere. The longer standing of the vehicle then indicates that, for example, is weekend and the vehicle is not used, that the user of the vehicle is on vacation, the vehicle is not needed or the like. At this time, then, for example, time-controlled or depending on parameters of Fuel cell system, which indicate the end of the hydrogen protection time, for example, the first post-dosing, the hydrogen protection time is actively stopped. Such active breaking breaks through the normally occurring harmful processes in that an active air supply of the cathode space takes place.
Alternatively or further, the anode compartment can also lead to the interruption of the hydrogen protection time by flushing with an active air supply. In this case, it is advantageous not only the anode space itself connected to the active air supply and flushed but both rooms, both cathode space and anode space. In this case, the hydrogen protection time is actively stopped and prevented by flushing both spaces with air, the formation of hydrogen fronts on both sides, thus preventing corrosion in the stack even better. For flushing the anode chamber with air then other connections of the anode compartment with an active air supply are necessary. This can be an independent line system with an air conveying unit or else a line connection for supplying air to the cathode space, which can then also be introduced into the anode and can be guided through the anode. However, it is always necessary to control and regulate such air feeds into the anode space by means of valves and control units which open and fluidly connect such line paths for rinsing, which makes the system more complicated.
With the active termination of the hydrogen protection time by an active air supply of the cathode compartment alone, such an inventive advantage can already be achieved without additional technical effort on the fuel cell system, which will be described in more detail below without the idea alone.
The hydrogen protection time is thus deliberately terminated by the active supply of oxygen within a relatively short period of time in the cathode compartment, in which the oxygen content increases. The investigations and measurements of the inventors in practice have shown that the methods according to the prior art without subsequent addition of hydrogen or with a subsequent addition of hydrogen, which are discontinued at some point, for example because of Hydrogen emanating, have always led to a roughly comparable carbon corrosion. At the fuel cell stacks used for the investigations, the maximum of CO 2 formation reached in each case a value of approximately 4,000 to 4,500 ppm, which of course depends on the size, age, operating life of the stack and substantially on the construction of the fuel cell stack and its periphery. With the method according to the invention, which actively terminates the hydrogen protection time after the at least one first subsequent metering, the inventors were able to achieve a very rapid change of the gases, so that the carbon corrosion could be significantly reduced. For the same fuel cell stack, which measured carbon dioxide levels of the order of 4,000 to 4,500 ppm during the standstill of the hydrogen protection time, carbon dioxide values of 900 to 1,200 ppm could be measured with an active termination of the hydrogen protection time. The occurrence of carbon corrosion can thus be reduced by approximately 4-fold by actively breaking off the hydrogen protection state from its passive leakage.
The method according to the invention makes it possible in practice, for example, to maintain the hydrogen protection time over the entire standstill phase of the fuel cell system, which is to be used in particular in a vehicle, by means of a small number of one or two additional doses with economical handling of the hydrogen resource in many phases. If there are longer downtimes, for example, on weekends, holidays or the like., After the predetermined number of replenishment, for example after the first or second addition, the hydrogen protection state is actively stopped and the cathode compartment actively acted upon with air. This will accept some carbon corrosion. However, the investigations have shown that carbon corrosion corrodes much less carbon on active termination of the hydrogen protection time than on the passive expiration of the hydrogen protection time, thus still achieving a significant lifetime advantage, especially proportional to the difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced is.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention provides that the number of replenishment is kept relatively low and is specified with one to three, preferably with one to two replenishment, in order to contain the hydrogen consumption accordingly. In practice, in particular in vehicle applications, it has been shown that the hydrogen protection time of up to 24 hours to be achieved over one or at most two replenishers is generally completely sufficient to cover the stoppage phase of the fuel cell system. If the stoppage phase goes beyond this, it is generally longer anyway, so that a large number of further replenishers would be necessary, which is undesirable, however, due to emissions and hydrogen consumption. In this case, then the active termination of the hydrogen protection time would offer a significant advantage over the prior art, without affecting the life of the fuel cell system as much as the previous solutions with a passive phasing out of the hydrogen protection time.
- - One of the criteria may be a predetermined period of time, so that the termination of the hydrogen protection time or the replenishment is purely time-controlled, for which ideally a map is stored, in which empirical values of the times are stored, about which the system is sufficiently dense to the hydrogen to keep in the anode compartment.
- As a further criterion, the concentration of at least one gas, in particular of carbon dioxide or else the concentration of several gases and thus the composition of a gas mixture, at least in the cathode space, can be used to initiate the replenishment of hydrogen and / or to break off the hydrogen protection time.
- - As a further criterion, the consumption of oxygen can serve, which can be detected at least indirectly. In addition to the concentration of oxygen and thus the oxygen consumption, it can also indirectly be detected, for example, via current and / or voltage which is present in the fuel cell stack. This value can also be used as a termination criterion for the hydrogen protection time or as a criterion for triggering a replenishment of hydrogen.
- - Another criterion, which can be combined in particular with one of the above criteria, is the temperature of the fuel cell. Thus, for example, during the cooling of the fuel cell, the hydrogen protection time can be maintained via the hydrogen still in the anode compartment, and it can be triggered on reaching a certain predetermined first temperature value, the additional metering. Here too, empirical values can be one play a role and can be stored for example on characteristic values in a map and thus ultimately use for the evaluation of the criteria.
Likewise, it may be possible to initiate an active termination of the additional dosages when falling below a certain predetermined second temperature value, since the fuel cell system, in particular the stack, has already cooled to the extent that an active termination without increased corrosion may be possible. On the other hand, if the stack is too warm, it is more likely to delay an active demolition and to allow further cooling within the guard time by further replenishment in order to prevent corrosion in the stack as well as possible. Thus, advantageously, the temperature of the stack in the hydrogen protection time should fall below a critical temperature level to perform an active termination. This can also be stored in a map.
According to a very advantageous development of these criteria, in particular the concentration of carbon dioxide can be used at least in the cathode compartment. In practice, it has been shown that the concentration of carbon dioxide increases relatively quickly at the end of the hydrogen protection period, first in the cathode space and then delayed in the anode space. The measurement can therefore preferably take place in the cathode space, but in principle also in the anode space or in both. An advantageous development of the method provides that the measurement takes place in the flow direction after the anode chamber or cathode chamber, in particular in the exhaust air or exhaust pipe, which opens out of the cathode chamber or anode chamber. In this area, as it has been shown in the investigations, the best measured values can be achieved.
A very advantageous development of the idea further provides that valve devices arranged before and / or after the cathode chamber are closed during the hydrogen protection time and opened with the start of the active ventilation. Such valve devices, if present, may be closed to prevent the re-flow of fresh oxygen, thereby prolonging the hydrogen protection time. In practice, due to the very humid exhaust gases from the cathode compartment, a valve device is often arranged only in the supply air flow, since a valve device in the exhaust air flow could very easily freeze. However, the valve device in the supply air stream, when it is closed, but restrict a steady exchange of air in the cathode, so that also a positive effect emanates.
Another very advantageous embodiment of the idea, it also provides that the active ventilation via a compressor, a pump, a compressed air reservoir and / or a fan takes place. As a result, the oxygen can be relatively quickly and efficiently conveyed into the cathode space, so as to achieve the desired effect with the lowest possible carbon corrosion by the rapid gas exchange when breaking the hydrogen protection time. In principle, it is possible to use a compressor, a pump or a fan, which is also present for the air supply of the fuel cell system in regular operation. Often, however, flow compressors are used here, which are relatively expensive in their run-up and which, for example, if they are in mechanical operative connection with an exhaust air turbine, can only be operated with the appropriate effort and relatively high noise emissions. For this reason, a compressed air reservoir can be provided, which is filled in the regular operation of the fuel cell system with compressed air, which is then trapped via a valve in the compressed air reservoir and is available for active ventilation at the termination of the hydrogen protection time.
Another very advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention can also provide that a compressor, a pump or in particular a blower is present in addition to the air conveyor in the fuel cell system and is used for active ventilation. In addition to the air conveying device for supplying air to the fuel cell system in normal operation, a compressor, a pump or, in particular, a simple blower may be present, which is used for the active termination of the hydrogen protection time. Such a fan can be constructed correspondingly simple and small, so that it can be supplied with energy from a starter battery, for example, when the construction is implemented in a vehicle. It can then be used very simply and efficiently, without having to turn on the electrical system. The resulting noise emissions are correspondingly low, so that the impact on the environment can be minimized.
As already mentioned above, it may be provided according to an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, that the number of replenishment of hydrogen is self-learning determined based on the behavior of the fuel cell system. For example, if it is known that with a post-dosing a hydrogen protection time of 16 hours to achieve, then it can be observed in the system, if the largest number of downtime occurring, for example, when taking a calendar during the week, correspondingly shorter than these 16 hours or may be slightly longer than these 16 hours. The system can then self-learning recognize that in most cases a hydrogen protection time of, for example 14 hours or alternatively 17 hours would be sufficient. Depending on the case, the system will therefore make one or two additional doses, and according to the invention, after the last subsequent dosing, actively interrupt the hydrogen protection time by venting the cathode space.
As already mentioned several times, a particularly advantageous use of such a method in a fuel cell can be used, which is used to provide electrical drive energy in a vehicle. Accordingly, this is provided according to an advantageous development of the idea as the intended use for the fuel cell. In particular, vehicle applications are characterized in practice by the fact that they have a comparatively uniform use on the respective weekdays, and that they require a comparatively frequent shutdown and restart of the fuel cell system. Exactly in these applications, therefore, the inventive method can be ideally used to optimize the life of the fuel cell used.

Nevertheless, there are also positive side effects in this phase. Oxygen, which enters the anode compartment, not only causes corrosion there, but it can sometimes also oxidize absorbed impurities and thus release the surface of the catalyst in the anode compartment again.
