Description
The invention relates to an electrochemical method and a control device for the automated, continuous and self-sufficient determination of the oxygen concentration in the waste water of a decentralized wastewater treatment plant.
In the context of the invention, a decentralized wastewater treatment plant is understood as meaning small wastewater treatment plants (KKA) and small wastewater treatment plants in the range from 4 to 1,000 PE. In the following, it is preferable to refer to a KKA as a decentralized wastewater treatment plant.
Allein in Deutschland fallen pro Einwohner ca. 150 I Abwasser täglich an. In Germany alone, about 150 l of wastewater are produced per inhabitant per day. For the decentralized treatment of these effluents, depending on the given conditions u.a. KKA (4 to 50 pe) and small wastewater treatment plants (50 to 1,000 pe). The total number of small sewage treatment plants and drainage-free mines in Germany is estimated at approx. 2.2 million.
Dezentrale Abwasserbehandlungsanlagen weisen i.d.R. mehrere Behandlungsstufen auf. Decentralized wastewater treatment plants have i.d.R. several treatment stages. Each stage of treatment takes place in a separate basin of the system intended for this stage of treatment. This is a primary clarification of the mechanical separation of solids and other deductible substances in the wastewater. The primary treatment is followed by a biological or biochemical purification stage in an aerobic bioreactor or process tank, referred to as a bioreactor, which primarily serves to break down dissolved organic substances in the wastewater. Furthermore, decentralized wastewater treatment plants may include a secondary clarification stage.
For these biological or biochemical processes, the microorganisms require sufficient dissolved oxygen. In decentralized wastewater treatment plants special ventilation systems are specifically used for this purpose, whereby the length of the aeration phase is decisive for the oxygen content measured in the process tank. A malfunction of these systems contributes to the death of the aerobic microorganisms and leads to a loss of function of this purification stage. As a result, cleaning targets can not be met and other chemical contaminants in the wastewater arise.
In order to ensure safe operation of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant without failures, it is therefore of great importance to monitor and measure the oxygen concentration in order to reliably rule out malfunctions at any time. It is both the operation of a decentralized wastewater treatment plant and the oxygen concentration of temperature, pressure and water chemical parameters, eg. B. content of organic carbon and salt content dependent.
The oxygen sensors previously used for on-site monitoring are based on optical and electrochemical measurement principles. Both in optical and in electrochemical oxygen measurement principles, the membrane or the membrane cap plays a crucial role. If the membrane is dirty or forms a biological coating, this immediately results in a falsification of the measured values.
In the optical method, a fluorescent dye in a membrane is excited by short-wavelength light. During the transition to the ground state, this emits long-wave light, which serves as a measuring signal. By diffusion, oxygen comes in contact with the dye and shortens the duration of the re-radiation. The gas transport through the membrane is also based on diffusion and is dependent on the temperature to a considerable extent. In addition, consumes during the measurement of the fluorescent dye in the membrane, which is why the membrane must be replaced regularly. Furthermore, the consumption of the fluorescent dye in the membrane decreases the dye concentration. This represents a significant disadvantage in terms of a continuous, self-sufficient oxygen monitoring.
The electrochemical method is also based on a diffusive oxygen transport through a membrane. In a subsequent chemical reaction, the oxygen is reacted while consuming an electrolyte. The resulting current has a linear correlation with the oxygen concentration. For monitoring and electrochemical oxygen determination, two measurement principles, namely a potentiometric oxygen determination or an amperometric oxygen determination, are used by default.

The main disadvantages of the electrochemical measuring principles are summarized in the fact that a permanent consumption of the electrolyte takes place, which in turn is the cause of Drifterscheinungen. To prevent these drift phenomena, the electrolyte must therefore be replaced regularly. Furthermore, the electrolyte is affected by the oxygen reduction by causing poor signal stability through the formation of an oxygen partial pressure gradient. In addition, due to soiling or wear, the membrane properties change, which in turn has a significant influence on the oxygen transport and the flow velocity of the measurement solution. When potentiometric measuring principle it comes in particular to corrosion of the electrode, which must be replaced regularly. Due to the choice of material of the electrode as well as a frequently made replacement of the complete system instead of the electrode as a single part, this is associated with high costs. The amperometric measuring principle additionally requires a cost-intensive converter system for providing a constant polarization voltage. Finally, can be guaranteed by the electrochemical measurement principle no self-sufficient operation.

The use of oxygen sensors in the small wastewater treatment sector requires special requirements, since these are mostly operated by private individuals and, in contrast to large sewage treatment plants, maintenance is carried out only once or twice a year. Oxygen sensors, however, must be regularly cleaned and often recalibrated at short intervals to maintain their functionality.
Furthermore, electrolytes, membranes or other parts have to be changed. If, for example, the membrane is contaminated or forms a biological coating thereon, this immediately results in a falsification of the measured values. The oxygen sensors used are not suitable for continuous real-time monitoring. The more frequently they are used, the closer the maintenance cycle must be. In addition, the current costs of an oxygen sensor (including transducers) compared to the current total cost of a KKA are too high.
In order to ensure the safe functioning of wastewater treatment plants and in particular KKA at all times, the monitoring of the oxygen concentration in the aerobic bioreactor is extremely important. At the moment, only random measurements are taken to ensure the smooth operation of the KKA. A permanent control of the clarification process fails so far on the profitability.

In particular, a simple, cost-effective, continuous and maintenance-free monitoring of the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater over the longest possible duration should be ensured.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to realize the monitoring of the oxygen concentration by means of an oxygen sensor, which requires no external drive voltage, is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
The treatment tanks can be arranged side by side.
In a preferred embodiment, the wastewater is passed through the inflow into the preclarification basin. From the preclarification basin, the wastewater is passed through a connector into the bioreactor basin and exits the bioreactor basin through the drain.

In a preferred embodiment, the preclarification basin as a connecting element has an outflow or an overflow through which the wastewater is actively or passively conducted from the preclarification basin into the bioreactor basin. In a further embodiment, the connecting element is designed as a water pipe.

For the purposes of the invention, "spatial separation" of the first and second chambers is understood to mean that the chambers have no common or divided volume and are connected to one another directly only by the ion-conducting connection and by an inflow and / or outflow. The chambers may be arranged side by side. Alternatively, the first chamber is disposed in the second chamber or vice versa.
The decentralized wastewater treatment plant can have any number of chambers. It is unclear how many chambers the decentralized wastewater treatment plant has. Thus, the first chamber may be preceded by an additional chamber, but the presence of at least first and second chamber for the corresponding arrangement of the first and second electrodes and thus the operation of the oxygen sensor is mandatory.
In the sense of the invention, the arrangement of the second chamber to the first chamber in the following reaction direction and subsequent flow direction of the waste water is understood as the second chamber arranged downstream of the first chamber.
In one embodiment, the first and / or second chamber corresponds to a treatment basin of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant. In an alternative embodiment, the first and / or second chamber is arranged as an extra chamber in the treatment tank of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant.
In a preferred embodiment, the preclarification basin corresponds to the first chamber and the bioreactor basin corresponds to the second chamber of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant. In a preferred embodiment, the first chamber is used for preclarification and the second chamber serves as a biological purification stage and is referred to as a bioreactor. Pre-treatment is therefore preferably carried out in the first chamber and a biological purification stage is carried out in the second chamber. In one embodiment, this arrangement corresponds to a two-chamber KKA.
In an alternative embodiment, one of the first chamber in the flow and reaction direction upstream additional chamber used for primary treatment. The additional, upstream of the first chamber chamber corresponds to the pre-treatment tank and the bioreactor tank corresponds to the second chamber of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant. The first chamber corresponds to an extra chamber and is arranged in the second chamber. In this case, the additional chamber upstream of the first chamber for primary treatment has an inflow or outflow. Thus, the wastewater in the additional chamber upstream of the first chamber, passed or derived from this in the first chamber.

In one embodiment, the inflow and / or outflow is designed as a conduit or overflow. In a further embodiment, the outflow of the second chamber leads to a further, downstream of the second chamber in the flow and reaction chamber for the purpose of aftertreatment of the wastewater, wherein the further chamber may be formed as Nachklärbecken. In an alternative embodiment, the outflow of the second chamber into the soil or subsurface, whereby the treated and purified wastewater is discharged into a body of water. In a further alternative embodiment, the outflow of the second chamber leads into a seepage shaft, as a result of which the treated and purified wastewater seeps into the ground, for example.
In one embodiment, the at least first and second chambers of the decentralized wastewater treatment plant are connected to each other by a connecting element. In a preferred embodiment, the first chamber as a connecting element to a drain or an overflow, through which the wastewater from the first chamber into the second chamber is actively or passively directed. In a further embodiment, the connecting element is designed as a water pipe.
Under an active line of the waste water from the first to the second chamber is understood in the context of the invention, the promotion by means of a pump. Under a passive management of the waste water from the first to the second chamber is understood in the context of the invention, the self-running transport.
For the purposes of the invention, the oxygen sensor comprises a first electrode designed as an anode, wherein the first electrode is arranged in the first chamber filled with waste water, wherein the first chamber has anaerobic conditions and is designed as anodic half-element. Furthermore, the oxygen sensor comprises a second electrode designed as a cathode, the second electrode being arranged in the second chamber filled with waste water, the second chamber having aerobic conditions and being formed as a cathodic half-element. In one embodiment, the oxygen sensor corresponds to a microbial fuel cell (MBZ).
In this case, the first chamber with the first electrode arranged therein is referred to as the anode chamber and the second chamber with the second electrode arranged therein as the cathode chamber.
The wastewater in the at least first and second chamber serves as electrolyte Through the electrolyte, the operation of the oxygen sensor is ensured. In this case, the first and the second chamber are each filled with the electrolyte in such a way that at least a part of the first and second electrodes of the oxygen sensor is covered by the electrolyte in order to ensure a proper functioning of the oxygen sensor.
The generated electrons are transported in the sense of the invention via the at least one electrical conductor from the anode to the cathode and thus from the anodic half-element to the cathodic half-element. For the purposes of the invention, the protons generated in the anodic half-element migrate through the ion-conducting compound from the anodic half-element into the cathodic half-element.
For the purposes of the invention, the oxygen sensor further comprises a second electrode designed as a cathode, which is arranged in the second chamber filled with waste water, wherein the second chamber has aerobic conditions and is designed as a cathodic half-element.
According to the invention, a continuous supply of air with a sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen in the second chamber is ensured by the aeration device, and the dissolved oxygen in the second chamber is reduced by the electrons emerging at the cathode.
In one embodiment, the reduction of the oxygen is carried out by microorganisms derived from the wastewater. In a preferred embodiment, the microorganisms originating from the wastewater deposit in the second chamber as a biofilm under aerobic conditions on the surface of the cathode and grow thereon. In one embodiment, the biofilm so formed is formed sessile. The growth of the biofilm occurs under the utilization of the organic compounds in the wastewater. The cathode is thus preferably biotic. In an alternative embodiment, the reduction takes place without the presence of microorganisms originating from the waste water and thus by an abiotically formed cathode.
Erfindungsgemäß wird durch die Belüftungseinrichtung eine kontinuierliche Luftzufuhr mit einer hinreichenden Menge an gelöstem Sauerstoff in der zweiten Kammer gewährleistetAccording to the invention, the aeration device ensures a continuous supply of air with a sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen in the second chamber
Preferably, the biological or biochemical degradation of the organic compounds takes place with the supply of external oxygen. This is ensured by aeration of the wastewater.
The supply of air, in which oxygen is also contained, ensures an aerobic environment in the second chamber. In one embodiment, the air supply can be switched off at least for a short time.
Bevorzugt reicht die Konzentration des gelösten Sauerstoffs von 2 mg/l bis 10 mg/l.In one embodiment, the continuous air supply provided by the aeration device into the second chamber is provided by a pump. Alternatively, it can be activated as needed or for a certain period of time. The concentration of dissolved oxygen preferably ranges from 2 mg / l to 10 mg / l.
The oxygen sensor preferably has a first electrode designed as an anode and a second electrode designed as a cathode. Potentials of adjustable size are applied to the electrodes.
In one embodiment, the electron generation can be selectively adjusted by the selected area ratio between the first electrode and the second electrode. If the electrons are in excess in accordance with equation (1), the current flow and thus the current intensity and / or the potential difference of the oxygen sensor depends only on the oxygen reduction at the cathode according to equation (2). Since the originating from the wastewater organic compounds in the anodic half-element are also present in excess, their concentration is sufficiently high and thus does not constitute a limiting factor for the current flow of the oxygen sensor.
In one embodiment, other suitable, electrically conductive materials are possible as first and / or second electrode, which have a high stability in the wastewater and biologically neutral, d. H. are not toxic (eg to microorganisms). This advantageously ensures stable electron transfer from the biofilm deposited on the surface of the first and / or second electrode to the respective electrode. In one embodiment, the first electrode and the second electrode are made of electrically conductive metals, metal alloys or other electrically conductive materials.
As electrically conductive materials are, for example, carbon, graphite, steel or an electrically conductive granules in question. Particularly suitable metals are platinum, copper, gold or other metals. Preferably, at least the second electrode is made of platinum or carbon. Platinum as the electrode material advantageously results in an increased reduction of the dissolved oxygen in the wastewater, since an effective transfer of the electrons to the oxygen is made possible. In a further embodiment, catalysts are arranged on the electrode surface of at least one electrode. This advantageously accelerates the kinetics of the chemical reactions taking place at at least one electrode.
In one embodiment, the energy generated by the oxygen sensor is used to control and operate the transmission unit and / or other components connected to the oxygen sensor. Advantageously, the oxygen sensor can thus also be used in areas without easy access to the power supply.

According to the invention, the concentration of the dissolved oxygen in the wastewater is determined from the at least one determined monitoring parameter.
In one embodiment, the determination of the dissolved oxygen concentration is based on a linear correlation of the at least one monitoring parameter with the oxygen concentration c (O 2 ) of the wastewater. In one embodiment, the current determined by the oxygen sensor has a linear correlation with the oxygen concentration c (O 2 ) due to the current flow of the electrons between the anode and cathode. In one embodiment, the potential difference detected by the oxygen sensor has a linear correlation with the oxygen concentration c (O 2 ).
Die Sauerstoffkonzentration wird an der Kathode ermittelt. The oxygen concentration is determined at the cathode.
In a preferred embodiment, the at least one electrical conductor, an external resistor is interposed, wherein the external resistance is selected in dependence on the at least one determined monitoring parameters.

In one embodiment, an external resistor is interposed to the at least one electrical conductor which connects the anode and the cathode. Preferably, the external resistor is connected in series with the ammeter. In an alternative embodiment, the at least one electrical conductor is not an external resistor interposed. The external resistance causes an increase in the microbial conversion of the respective half-cell reactions, since the sensitivity of the oxygen sensor is advantageously improved.
According to the invention, a control device for implementing the method for the automated, continuous and self-sufficient determination of the oxygen concentration in the waste water of a decentralized wastewater treatment plant is used. For the purposes of the invention, the control device has at least one oxygen sensor. In this case, the oxygen sensor comprises a first electrode designed as an anode, wherein the first electrode is arranged in the first chamber filled with waste water, wherein the first chamber has anaerobic conditions and is designed as anodic half-element. Furthermore, the oxygen sensor comprises a second electrode designed as a cathode, the second electrode being arranged in the second chamber filled with waste water, the second chamber having aerobic conditions and being formed as a cathodic half-element. In addition, the oxygen sensor comprises an ion-conducting connection and at least one electrical conductor. In this case, the first and the second chamber are connected to one another by an ion-conducting connection. The anode and the cathode are connected via at least one electrical conductor with a voltmeter and / or an ammeter. The oxygen sensor furthermore comprises at least one transmission unit, which serves to transmit at least one monitoring parameter determined, evaluated and / or stored by the oxygen sensor to an operating unit. In this case, the oxygen sensor and the transmission unit are interconnected.
Under a self-sufficient determination of the oxygen concentration is understood in the context of the invention, no externally required voltage, which must be applied to the first electrode and second electrode. For the purposes of the invention, a continuous determination of the oxygen concentration is understood as a continuous determination, which is reflected in a virtually maintenance-free operation.
In a preferred embodiment of the control device, the anode of the first chamber is upstream or downstream and / or the cathode of the second chamber upstream or downstream.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the anode is arranged in the first chamber. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the cathode is arranged in the second chamber.
In a preferred embodiment, the control device or at least parts of the control device is designed to be interchangeable and / or retrofittable.
Advantageously, operated with the control device according to the invention decentralized wastewater treatment plants can be retrofitted or individual components of the control device can be easily replaced by their simple structure.
In a preferred embodiment, the control device according to the invention further comprises a control unit, wherein the control unit is set up to implement the method according to the invention.
The decentralized wastewater treatment plant also has at least one control device, wherein the control device has at least one oxygen sensor.
Advantageously eliminated by the inventive method and the control device according to the invention for the determination of the oxygen concentration, the above-mentioned disadvantages of the electrochemical measurement principles. Advantageously, the oxygen reduction will take place directly at the cathode without the use of a permeable membrane. Further advantageously, the durability of the electrodes used is prolonged, since no corrosion phenomena occur. In addition, the use of a, as used for example in amperometric measurement, converter, which is expensive eliminates. Thus, the operating costs of a decentralized wastewater treatment plant are significantly reduced. Since the function of the oxygen sensor depends directly on the formation of biofilms, their usual importance as a disturbance variable can be largely neglected. Regular cleaning procedures are therefore advantageously not needed.
The inventive method for determining the oxygen concentration of wastewater is a stable function of the treatment process ensured by wastewater and the concentration of oxygen can be controlled for a long time in a simple manner due to the simple structure and operation.
Furthermore, no reference electrode is needed as a third electrode, since the conversion is based only on the proportion of electrons that depend on the degradation of the organic compounds in the wastewater. Also on the use of an inner electrolyte, which is usually part of electrochemical oxygen sensors and must be renewed regularly, can be dispensed with.
Advantageously, the processes in the decentralized wastewater treatment plant and the values of the oxygen concentration determined thereby can be controlled by means of remote data transmission by means of the method according to the invention and the control device according to the invention. Due to the low personnel control effort due to the easier access to the sensor data, the controls can be carried out continuously, without increasing the overall control effort. As a result, the controlled by an appropriate control device decentralized wastewater treatment plants are advantageously secured operationally at very low cost. The transmitted sensor values can be used to detect malfunctions and immediately afterwards, for. B. via a remote maintenance to respond.
The method according to the invention can be used to operate an oxygen sensor and a control device according to the invention.
