Stand der TechnikState of the art
Electrical energy can be stored by means of batteries. Batteries convert chemical reaction energy into electrical energy. Here, a distinction is made between primary batteries and secondary batteries. Primary batteries are only functional once, while secondary batteries, also referred to as accumulators, are rechargeable. A battery comprises one or more battery cells.
In particular, so-called lithium-ion battery cells are used in an accumulator. These are characterized among other things by high energy densities, thermal stability and extremely low self-discharge. Lithium-ion battery cells are used, inter alia, in motor vehicles, in particular in electric vehicles (EV), hybrid vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).
Lithium-ion battery cells have a positive electrode, also referred to as a cathode, and a negative electrode, also referred to as an anode. The cathode and the anode each comprise a current conductor, on which an active material is applied. The active material for the cathode is, for example, a metal oxide. The active material for the anode is, for example, graphite or silicon.
In the active material of the anode lithium atoms are embedded. During operation of the battery cell, ie during a discharge process, electrons flow in an external circuit from the anode to the cathode. Within the battery cell, lithium ions migrate from the anode to the cathode during a discharge process. The lithium ions from the active material of the anode store reversibly, which is also called deintercalation. During a charging process of the battery cell, the lithium ions migrate from the cathode to the anode. In this case, the lithium ions reversibly store back into the active material of the anode, which is also referred to as intercalation.
The electrodes of the battery cell are formed in the manner of a foil and wound into an electrode winding with the interposition of a separator layer which separates the anode from the cathode. Such an electrode winding is also referred to as a jelly roll. The electrodes can also be stacked to form an electrode stack or in another way form an electrode unit. A battery cell usually comprises one or more electrode units.

Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
A battery cell is proposed, which comprises an electrode unit with an anode, a cathode and a separator arranged between the anode and the cathode. In this case, the separator has an electrically conductive core layer, which is arranged between a first ionically permeable edge layer and a second ionically permeable edge layer.
According to the invention, the separator is designed in such a way that an ionic permeability of the core layer is reduced by electrical activation of the core layer.
During normal operation of the battery cell, the core layer is ionically permeable, whereby the entire separator is ionically permeable. In the case of a detected fault of the battery cell, which could lead, for example, to thermal runaway of the battery cell, the ionic permeability of the core layer and thus also the ionic permeability of the separator can thus be reduced or completely eliminated by appropriate control of the core layer. As a result, the transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is inhibited or prevented and the battery cell is in a safe state.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the first ionically permeable surface layer and / or the second ionically permeable surface layer of the separator comprise a polymer. Alternatively, the first ionically permeable surface layer and / or the second ionically permeable surface layer consist of a polymer.
Preferably, the first ionically permeable edge layer and the second ionically permeable edge layer are configured identically. This means that the first ionically permeable surface layer and the second ionically permeable surface layer are made of the same material and have the same thickness. In this case, the thickness of the respective edge layer is to be understood to mean an expansion in a direction transverse to a surface of the core layer.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the core layer is made of a porous metal and thus electrically conductive. The core layer may be configured, for example, as a holey metal foil. The core layer may also be configured as a foamed metal foil. Furthermore, the core layer can be configured like a grid. It is important that the core layer has holes or pores through which a transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is possible.
If a heating of the core layer takes place by means of a corresponding electrical activation of the core layer, then the adjacently arranged edge layers are likewise heated. When the edge layers are thereby heated to a temperature higher than their melting temperature, the material of the edge layers melts and clogs the pores or holes of the core layer. As a result, the ionic permeability of the core layer and thus also the ionic permeability of the separator are reduced or completely eliminated. As a result, the transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is inhibited or prevented and the battery cell is in a safe state.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the first ionically permeable surface layer and / or the second ionically permeable surface layer have a melting temperature between 85 ° C and 135 ° C. Such a temperature is not reached in regular operation of the battery cell. Thus, there is no risk that the surface layers melt during regular operation of the battery cell.
According to an advantageous development of the invention, the battery cell comprises a current source which is connected to the separator such that when the current source is switched on, a heating current flows through the core layer. For example, the power source is connected to opposite edges of the core layer. The heating current causes the heating of the core layer and the edge layers until the melting of the material of the surface layers.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the first ionically permeable surface layer and / or the second ionically permeable surface layer are impregnated with an electrolyte which comprises a blowing agent, in particular carbon dioxide. The electrolyte is preferably present in liquid form.
The electrolyte is preferably designed such that the said propellant escapes when a predetermined voltage, for example 5 V, is applied to the electrolyte.
According to an advantageous development of the invention, the battery cell comprises a voltage source which is connected to the electrode unit in such a way that when the voltage source is switched on, a voltage supplied by the voltage source, for example 5 V, is applied to the first boundary layer and / or to the second boundary layer of the separator ,
By connecting the voltage source, the voltage supplied by the voltage source is thus applied to the electrolyte, with which the boundary layer is impregnated. Then, the blowing agent of the electrolyte in the surface layer is gaseous and escapes. The propellant expands and displaces the electrolyte from the surface layer. As a result, the ionic permeability of the surface layer and thus also the ionic permeability of the separator are reduced or completely eliminated. As a result, the transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is inhibited or prevented and the battery cell is in a safe state.
According to another advantageous embodiment of the invention, silicon is introduced into the core layer of the separator. The silicon is introduced into the core layer of the separator in such a way that the core layer has holes or pores through which a transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is possible.
By a corresponding electrical activation of the core layer, in particular by electrically connecting the core layer with anodic potential, lithium ions are incorporated into the core layer. The core layer is thus charged with lithium ions. As a result, the core layer expands with the silicon. The expansion takes place, inter alia, in the pores or holes of the core layer, which are thus reduced or disappear completely. Furthermore, the expansion of the core layer creates a pressure on the core layer, as a result of which the pores or holes additionally be downsized. As a result, the ionic permeability of the core layer and thus also the ionic permeability of the separator are reduced or completely eliminated. As a result, the transport of lithium ions in the battery cell is inhibited or prevented and the battery cell is in a safe state.
According to an advantageous development of the invention, the battery cell therefore comprises a switching element, by means of which the core layer of the separator is electrically connectable to the anode. The switching element is preferably a controllable switch, for example a transistor or a relay, which is connected to the anode and to the core layer of the separator. When the switching element is closed, the core layer is connected to the anodic potential and lithium ions are incorporated into the core layer with the silicon.
The battery cell preferably comprises a voltage measuring device, which is connected to the core layer of the separator and to the anode. By means of the voltage measuring device, a potential difference between the separator and the anode can be measured. If the measured potential difference between the separator and the anode decreases, this may be due to dendritic growth on the anode. Thus, a dendritic growth on the anode can be recognized in good time by means of the voltage measuring device before a short circuit occurs between the anode and separator or anode and cathode.
A battery cell according to the invention advantageously finds use in an electric vehicle (EV), in a hybrid vehicle (HEV), in a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) or in a stationary battery.
Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
In the event of a fault, a battery cell according to the invention can be safely switched off in a relatively short time to prevent thermal runaway by reducing the ionic permeability of the separator. In a battery cell of the present invention having a core layer of porous metal, the ionic permeability of the separator can be reduced by introducing only a relatively small amount of heat energy into the battery cell. The porous metal does not affect the function of the battery cell in regular operation. The additionally required space for the core layer of porous metal is also relatively small. In a battery cell according to the invention, which has a core layer with silicon, the ionic permeability of the separator can be reduced without introducing heat energy into the battery cell. Advantageously, the process of reducing the ionic permeability of the separator is reversible. Also, no high current is required to initiate said process. The silicon does not influence the function of the battery cell during regular operation. The additionally required space for the core layer with silicon is also relatively small. Furthermore, by measuring the potential difference between the separator and the anode, dendritic growth on the anode can be detected early.
