Description
The present invention relates to a coating composition for producing a layer composite, a layer composite, the use of a layer composite as packaging material, in particular for food packaging, ticket, gambling document, parking ticket or the like, the use of a mixture of alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymer and modified or unmodified polyvinyl alcohol in a layer of a laminar composite, a use of a coating composition for producing a laminar composite and a method for producing a laminar composite.
Laminated composites, for example with paper, synthetic paper or plastic films as carrier layer, are often provided with a finishing layer in order to improve or change the properties of the layer composite. For example, the printability, e.g. by offset printing, or the resistance of the recording material to external influences can be improved.
In particular, thermosensitive recording materials which are laminar composites regularly include a finishing layer, which may be a topcoat (also called protective layer or topcoat), to improve the resistance of the thermosensitive recording layer to environmental influences.
Heat-sensitive recording materials have been known for many years and enjoy a high level of popularity. This popularity is due, among other things, to the fact that their use has the advantage that the color-forming components are contained in the recording material itself and therefore toner and color cartridge-free printers can be used. It is therefore no longer necessary to purchase or replenish toner or ink cartridges. In particular, this innovative technology has been used in the printing of receipts, receipts, shipping labels, parking tickets, entrance and travel tickets, scientific and medical measurement protocols, barcode awards, price tags (eg self-service fruit and vegetable scales) and many more Enforced labels.
Frequently, thermosensitive recording materials are used which are completely unprinted - i. white or almost white - or are only printed on the back. These unprinted thermosensitive recording materials are used, for example, as receipt rolls in cash registers or ticket offices or in scientific and medical measuring instruments, depending on the number of purchased goods or services or on the number of collected measurement data, the length of the printed recording material varies.
In addition to the unprinted heat-sensitive recording materials and printed heat-sensitive recording materials - for example, as airline tickets and tickets - used, which are printed in particular in the offset printing process. Here, first of all, the heat-sensitive recording material is printed in high numbers with all unchangeable information, such as company marks, images and text, resulting in a heat-sensitive blank (eg a ticket blank). The heat-sensitive blanks produced are placed in a thermal printer at the point of sale and can then be individually thermally printed with information before the individualized recording material is handed over to the end customer. This information can vary with each print job - such as date, event name, seat number, card number, mass, price, etc.
In the context of the present text, a distinction is made between the printing of thermosensitive recording materials (or layer composites) by the application of printing inks to the surface of the thermosensitive recording material, for example by offset printing, and the thermal printing of thermosensitive recording materials by the action of heat. Upon exposure to heat, for example by means of a thermal printhead of a thermal printer, color formation is induced by chemical reaction of the dye precursor.

It has been found that the paper and protective layers described in the prior art do not yet have sufficiently high water resistance and printability.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a coating composition for producing a layer composite, with which an improved surface finish, in particular water resistance, of the layer composite can be achieved and with which a layer composite can be produced that is very easy to print, in particular very high good printable by offset printing.
- a) a modified or unmodified polyvinyl alcohol,
- b) an alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymer
- c) a crosslinker and
- d) one, two or more than two pigments.
It has surprisingly been found that laminates prepared using a coating composition of the invention have improved water resistance and offset printability. Even after storage of the produced layer composite in water, no detachment of the finishing layer produced with the coating composition was observed, so that the layer composite could also be printed very well by offset printing without detaching individual layers of the layer composite during the mechanical stress during printing. When the coating composition was used as a cover layer of a heat-sensitive recording material, the water resistance of the layer was so high that sticking of co-stored heat-sensitive recording materials after storage in water could not be observed.
In particular, the combination of modified or unmodified polyvinyl alcohol and alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymer in the presence of a crosslinker significantly improves the properties of laminates prepared using a paper coating slip of the invention. The mixture of modified or unmodified polyvinyl alcohol and alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymer shows a synergistic effect and the properties of the resulting composite layer can not be obtained with the individual substances alone in this form.
In the context of the present invention, a crosslinker is understood as meaning a monomer, oligomer or polymer which contains reactive groups and makes it possible to connect linear or branched macromolecules to one another in three-dimensional networks. The crosslinkers react depending on the type with the functional groups (-OH, -COOH, etc.) of the substance to be crosslinked. Here, with optimal ratio between crosslinker and functional groups of the substance to be crosslinked, a three-dimensional network is formed. With the use of crosslinkers, the hardness of the layer to be formed using the coating composition of the invention increases.
In the context of the present invention, the term (meth) acrylic acid is understood as meaning an acrylic acid, a methacrylic acid and a mixture of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. An alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymer is thus a copolymer prepared by reacting an alkylene with a) acrylic acid, b) methacrylic acid or c) a mixture of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. Usually, the alkylene and (meth) acrylic acid units in the copolymer are randomly distributed, but it is also possible to use alternating, block and graft copolymers, the random alkylene / (meth) acrylic acid copolymers being preferred according to the invention.
According to the invention, a coating composition is preferred, wherein the one pigment, the two pigments or the more than two pigments are one, two or more than two organic pigments, one, two or more than two inorganic pigments or a mixture of organic pigments Pigments and inorganic pigments.
Erfindungsgemäß bevorzugt ist eine Beschichtungszusammensetzung, wobei zumindest ein Pigment, zwei Pigmente oder sämtliche Pigmente ausgewählt sind aus der Gruppe bestehend aus Aluminiumsilikat, Aluminiumoxid, Aluminiumhydroxid, Bariumsulfat, Bentonit, Böhmit, natürlichem Calciumcarbonat, gefälltem Calciumcarbonat, Diatomeenerde, Harnstoff-Formaldehyd-Harz, natürlichem Kaolin, kalziniertem Kaolin, Kaolinit oder calciniertem Kaolinit, Kieselgur, Kieselsäure, vorzugsweise gefällter Kieselsäure, Magnesiumsilikat, Magnesiumcarbonat, Satinweiß, Siliziumoxid, Talkum, Titanoxid, Tonerde, aktivierte Tonerde und Zinkoxid.According to the invention, preference is given to a coating composition in which at least one pigment, two pigments or all pigments are selected from the group consisting of aluminum silicate, aluminum oxide, aluminum hydroxide, barium sulfate, bentonite, boehmite, natural calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth, urea-formaldehyde resin, natural Kaolin, calcined kaolin, kaolinite or calcined kaolinite, kieselguhr, silicic acid, preferably precipitated silica, magnesium silicate, magnesium carbonate, satin white, silica, talc, titanium oxide, clay, activated alumina and zinc oxide.
According to the invention, preference is given to a coating composition in which the coating composition contains, as a pigment, silica, preferably precipitated silica.
Particularly preferred according to the invention is a coating composition wherein the coating composition contains two or more pigments, one pigment being silica, preferably precipitated silica, and the second or further pigments being selected from the group consisting of aluminum silicate, aluminum oxide, aluminum hydroxide, barium sulfate, bentonite , Boehmite, natural calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth, urea-formaldehyde resins, natural kaolin, calcined kaolin, kaolinite or calcined kaolinite, diatomaceous earth, magnesium silicate, magnesium carbonate, satin white, talc, titanium oxide, clay, activated alumina and zinc oxide.
According to the invention, a coating composition is preferred, wherein the coating composition comprises two pigments, which are preferably kaolin and silica, preferably precipitated silica.
It has been found in own investigations that the use of silica as pigment in the laminate produced with the coating composition according to the invention further improves the offset printability since the silica contributes to the regulation of the water content in the recording material. During printing, it is necessary for the coated recording material to have a certain water absorbency. Without a certain water absorption of the printed composite layer can not accept the color sufficiently well. The combination of kaolin and silica showed particularly good properties in their own investigations.
The use of a mixture of pigments, wherein a pigment is a silica, preferably a precipitated silica, has proved to be particularly advantageous. The silica controls the water absorption of the layer composite produced from the coating composition, while the further pigment or the further pigments improve the technical properties-such as strength, scratch resistance, optical properties-of the layer composite.
According to the invention, a coating composition is preferred in which the mass fraction of silica in the coating composition is 0.02 to 0.10, preferably 0.05 to 0.07, very particularly preferably 0.01 to 0.05, based on the dry mass of coating composition.
Our own investigations have shown that the water absorption capacity of the layer composite produced from the coating composition is optimal for the offset printability if the content of silica in the above ranges is.
According to the invention, preference is given to a coating composition in which the silica has an average particle size (d 50) in the range from 5 to 18 μm, preferably a particle size in the Range of 8 to 15 microns, most preferably in the range of 10 to 14 microns. The mean particle size is determined by particle size analysis in the laser diffraction method according to DIN / ISO 13320-1 [1999].
A laser scattered light spectrometer operates on the basis of the statistical laser light scattering according to DIN / ISO 13320-1 [1999] in the measuring range from 0.01 μm to 3000 μm. A conversion to the device is not required. For the automated measurement, the particle sample is placed in a circulation unit for wet measurement. An integrated ultrasonic probe prevents cross-linking of the particles and makes external sample preparation superfluous. In the interaction of laser light with particles, diffraction, refraction, reflection and absorption produce characteristic scattered light patterns for the particle size. With the Mie theory can be concluded from these scattered light patterns on the particle size distribution.
In laser diffraction, particle size distributions are determined by measuring the angular dependence of the intensity of scattered light of a laser beam that penetrates a dispersed silica particle sample. In this case, large particles scatter light at small angles relative to the laser beam, while small particles lead to large scattering angles. The data of the angle-dependent scattered light intensity are analyzed and are the basis for calculating the size of the particles that are responsible for the diffraction pattern. Here, the Mie theory is used. The particle size is given as the diameter of the volumetric sphere. The scattered light theory developed by Mie in 1908 is based on the statement that the scattered light pattern generated by a particle has characteristic features which, given knowledge of the optical parameters, allow a unique size assignment. For particles that are significantly larger than 10 -20 microns, the so-called Fraunhofer evaluation is offered as a simplification, which evaluates only the light diffraction and thus manages without the correct optical parameters.

The coating composition according to the invention can be used as barrier screed or top coat. Preference is given to the use as cover coat for producing a cover layer.
In the context of the present invention, the term "barrier screed" therefore denotes a coating applied to a carrier layer (referred to as "dash" in technical terms), by which the carrier layer is provided with barrier properties by the barrier screed passing a mobile substance. in particular of fat and / or oil and / or moisture, prevented by the carrier layer. The application of this coating, that is, the barrier screed is also referred to as "paint" and the coating to be applied as a "coating color". The application of a barrier screed to the carrier layer results in a layer composite of at least two layers. This layer composite can be provided with the finishing layer according to the invention, produced from the coating composition according to the invention.
Laminated composites, for example with paper, synthetic paper or plastic films as carrier layer, are often provided with a finishing layer in order to improve or change the properties of the layer composite. If the carrier layer in the layer composite according to the invention consists of paper and at least one barrier screed has been applied, this layer composite is also referred to as barrier paper. In particular, the term "barrier paper" thus refers to high-density and / or water-proof or moisture-proof barrier papers for food applications. Special papers are in this case by the expert in principle "uncoated" papers (for example, in the context of the present invention, for example, the carrier layer of paper) and in "coated" papers (for example, in the context of the present invention, the barrier paper comprising at least one "barrier screed") are distinguished.
Lots of offered foods, such as sausage, cheese or baked goods, are usually handed over to customers in a packaging for reasons of hygiene or freshness. High demands are placed on the packaging, especially for fatty foods. When using conventional paper-based packaging, in the case of fatty foods, the packaging material may be permeated with the fat from the food. This may cause the packaging material to soften and tear or contaminate other items with the grease when in contact with the package.

In papermaking, three grades are given for the dry content of paper and pulp: "atro" (absolutely dry), "lutro" (air-dry) and "otro" (oven-dry). The information is given in "% atro", "% lutro" and "% otro". Where "atro" stands for a paper or pulp with 0% water content. For "lutro" a "normal" (basically necessary for the paper) moisture content is used as the basis of the calculation. In the case of pulp and groundwood, the invoice mass generally refers to 90: 100, ie 90 parts of fabric, 10 parts of water. The state of paper or pulp after drying under defined defined conditions is referred to as "otro".
