The present invention relates to a method for exhaust gas purification and a suitably designed exhaust system. The present method and the corresponding system serves to avoid the formation of nitrous oxide as a secondary exhaust gas, which may arise primarily during the admission of certain types of catalysts with NH 3 .
The exhaust gas of internal combustion engines in motor vehicles typically contains the noxious gases carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and possibly sulfur oxides (SO x ), as well as particles consisting predominantly of soot residues and optionally adhering organic agglomerates. These are called primary emissions. CO, HC and particulates are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel in the combustion chamber of the engine. Nitrogen oxides are produced in the cylinder from nitrogen and oxygen in the intake air when the combustion temperatures locally exceed 1400 ° C. Sulfur oxides result from the combustion of organic sulfur compounds, which are always present in small amounts in non-synthetic fuels. To remove these environmentally and environmentally harmful emissions from automotive exhaust emissions, a variety of catalytic exhaust purification technologies have been developed, the basic principle of which is usually that the exhaust gas to be purified is passed over a catalyst consisting of a flow-through or flow-through a Wandflusswabenkörper (wall-flow) and a catalytically active coating applied thereto. The catalyst promotes the chemical reaction of various exhaust gas components to form innocuous products such as carbon dioxide and water.
In this case, the mode of action and composition of the catalysts used differ depending on the composition of the exhaust gas to be cleaned and depending on the expected exhaust gas temperature level on the catalyst sometimes considerably. A large number of compositions used in the catalyst as the catalytically active coating contains components in which, under certain operating conditions, one or more exhaust gas constituents can be temporarily bound and selectively released again given a suitable change in the operating conditions. Components having such a capacity are hereinafter referred to generally as memory materials.
Nitrogen oxides storage catalysts (NSCs, NSRs) are used to remove the nitrogen oxides contained in lean exhaust gas from so-called lean-burn engines (Diesel, Lean-GDI). The cleaning effect is based on the fact that in a lean phase of operation (storage phase, lean operation) of the engine, the nitrogen oxides are stored by the storage material of the storage catalyst in the form of nitrates. In a subsequent rich operating phase (regeneration phase, rich operation, DeNOx phase) of the engine, the previously formed nitrates are decomposed and reacted the released nitrogen oxides with the reducing fat components of the exhaust gas during the rich operation on the storage catalyst to nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. The rich constituents of the exhaust gas include hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, ammonia and hydrogen.
The storage phase for nitrogen oxides (lean operation) usually takes 100 to 2000 seconds and depends on the storage capacity of the catalyst and the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. However, for aged catalysts with reduced storage capacity, the duration of the storage phase may also drop to 50 seconds or less. The regeneration phase (rich operation), however, is always much shorter and only takes a few seconds (5 s-20 s). The exhaust gas leaving the nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter during the regeneration has essentially no more pollutants and is composed approximately stoichiometrically. Its air ratio [lambda; λ] (Lambda: indicates the ratio of fuel to air in the exhaust gas - see below) is nearly during this time At the end of the regeneration phase, the released nitrogen oxides and the oxygen bound to the oxygen storage components of the catalyst are no longer sufficient to oxidize all the rich exhaust gas constituents. It therefore comes to a breakthrough of these components by the catalyst and the air ratio drops to a value below 1. The erupting exhaust gas may contain larger amounts of ammonia formed from the overreduction of nitrogen oxides (NH 3 ). This breakthrough indicates the end of the regeneration and can be registered with the help of a so-called lambda probe behind the storage catalyst (so-called sensor-controlled system).
Derartige Katalysatoren werden zum Beispiel in der It has proved to be advantageous in lean-burn gasoline engines on average, if three-way catalysts can also perform the function of nitrogen oxide storage and nitrogen oxide reduction (so-called TWNSC catalysts). Such catalysts are described, for example in the
It should also be noted that the direct injection of fuel into the combustion chamber of gasoline engines and the turbocharger rotationally downstream of the exhaust valve results in a steady cooling of the exhaust gas temperature. This increases the risk that the uf-NSC is more often in the nitrous oxide formation window. In addition, these low temperatures are often no longer sufficient, especially in urban driving and on overland trips, for example, to operate a underfloor catalyst operated behind a system of cc-NSC and uf-NSC with sufficient conversion efficiency, in particular for N 2 O, with the result that N2O is released into the environment.

The object of the present invention is to specify a possibility for predominantly medium average burning gasoline engines with an exhaust system comprising at least two catalysts of the type TWC, TWNSC or NSC with which the discharge of N 2 O as possible prevented under regeneration conditions or in rich exhaust conditions becomes. The method used for this purpose or the corresponding system should be as robust as possible and, from the economic and ecological standpoint, systems of the prior art should be at least equivalent, but advantageously superior.
These and other obvious objects to those skilled in the art from the prior art are achieved by a method having the features of
By having at least two catalysts selected from the group consisting of NSC, TWC and TWNSC in a process for reducing harmful auto-exhaust constituents by means of an exhaust system, wherein the exhaust gas is then circulated to the downstream catalyst of the at least two catalysts as it is Located in a temperature window in which it is capable of forming NH 3 N 2 O and produces the upstream catalyst of at least two catalysts NH 3 , one arrives in a robust and very advantageous manner to achieve the object. By bypassing the catalyst located downstream, the NH 3 formed by the first catalyst during the regeneration is conducted past this and optionally the following catalysts as a reducing agent available or can be oxidized to nitrogen via a so-called ammonia oxidation catalyst (AMOX) or ammonia barrier catalyst (ASC). It is therefore surprising that despite this measure according to the invention no other deterioration of the exhaust gas reduction can be seen.
Furthermore, a variant is preferred in which the exhaust system has at least one NOx reduction catalyst downstream of the at least two catalysts. Both HC and CO and NOx breakthroughs from the upstream two or more TWC, NSC or TWNSC For example, catalysts may be reduced by one or more downstream nitrogen oxide storage (NSC) catalysts. Most preferred, however, is the embodiment in which the NOx reduction catalyst is configured as one or more SCR catalysts or a combination of one or more SCR catalysts and one or more NSCs. As already indicated above, in the regeneration of the NSCs or TWNSCs or under rich exhaust gas conditions, ammonia is also easily formed in the TWC. In an SCR catalyst, which has a storage capacity for ammonia, this ammonia can then be stored and would subsequently be available for the reduction of the nitrogen oxides passing through the upstream catalysts. Ammonia-storing SCR catalysts are well known to the person skilled in the art and are described further below. Particularly preferred is an arrangement of at least one SCR catalyst (s) followed by at least one nitrogen oxide storage catalyst (s) as a NOx reduction catalyst.
As already indicated above, there is a temperature window in which the types of catalysts envisaged here (NSC, TWC, TWNSC) can oxidize ammonia to nitrous oxide, which is the case primarily at a catalyst temperature of <350 ° C. This temperature window extends approximately from 220 ° C to 350 ° C, which is why preferably in this area, a diversion of the exhaust gas to the catalyst located downstream of the at least two catalysts. More preferred is a diversion when the addressed catalyst is in a temperature window of 250 ° C-350 ° C, most preferably in a temperature window of 270 ° C-330 ° C.
In order to determine the temperature of the exhaust gas as accurately as possible, it may also be advantageous to position a second or third temperature sensor upstream of the corresponding downstream catalyst of the at least two catalysts. This second temperature sensor can be arranged between the at least two catalysts and preferably upstream of the diversion of the diversion of the exhaust gas around the catalyst located downstream. Furthermore, it is preferred that a third temperature sensor is also present upstream of the first catalyst of the at least two catalysts.
The present invention also relates to a suitably designed exhaust system for exhaust gas aftertreatment comprising at least two catalysts from the group consisting of NSC, TWC and TWNSC, wherein the system is designed such that the exhaust gas can then be routed around the downstream catalyst of the at least two catalysts when it is in a situation where it is capable of forming N 2 O from NH 3 . The preferred system configurations described above for the method apply correspondingly to the exhaust system envisaged herein. Also addressed is the use of the system for the exhaust gas purification of a gasoline engine, which is operated mainly with average lean A / F mixture.
The regulation of the method described here can take place according to measures known to the person skilled in the art. As described above, various sensors (temperature, NOx, λ sensors) which at any time measure the state of the exhaust gas with regard to certain components and supply these values to the engine control unit (ECU) can be used to assist in regulating and adjusting the exhaust gas system. hand off. However, because of cost considerations, an embodiment in which the regulation and adjustment of the exhaust system occurs partially or exclusively via data values stored in the ECU (so-called maps) appears to be particularly preferred.
NOx-Speicherkatalysator:NOx storage catalytic converter:
As already stated, NOx storage catalytic converters consist of materials which can remove nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gas stream under lean exhaust gas conditions and can desorb and convert the nitrogen oxides under lambda = 1 or rich exhaust gas conditions.
Other examples of oxygen storage materials include cerium and praseodymium or corresponding mixed oxides, which may additionally contain the following components selected from the group of zirconium, neodymium, yttrium and lanthanum. Frequently, these oxygen-storing materials are doped with precious metals such as Pd, Rh and / or Pt, which can modify the storage capacity and memory characteristics. These substances are - as I said - able to remove oxygen in the lean oxygen from the exhaust gas and set free again under rich exhaust conditions. This prevents the NOx-conversion over the TWC from decreasing briefly when the fuel-air ratio of Lambda = 1 deviates briefly into the lean and NOx breakthroughs occur. Furthermore, a filled oxygen storage prevents HC and CO breakthroughs when the exhaust gas transiently fats, since under rich exhaust conditions, the stored oxygen first reacts with the excess HC and CO before breakthrough occurs. In this case, the oxygen storage serves as a buffer against fluctuations around lambda = 1. A half-filled oxygen storage has the best performance in order to be able to intercept short-term deviations from lambda = 1. In order to determine the level of the oxygen storage in operation, lambda sensors are used.
The NH 3 -storing SCR catalyst, which may be present in the underbody (uf), may be designed according to types known to the person skilled in the art. As a rule, this is a support body provided with a material catalytically active for the SCR reaction or a support body which has been extruded from a catalytically active material. In the former case, the catalytically active material is commonly understood as the "washcoat" with which the support body is provided. However, in addition to the component catalytically active in the true sense, it may also contain other materials such as binders of transition metal oxides and high surface area carrier oxides such as titanium oxide, aluminum oxide, in particular gamma-Al 2 O 3 , zirconium or cerium oxide. Also suitable as SCR catalysts are those which are composed of one of the materials listed below. However, it is also possible to use zoned, layered arrangements or multiple-brick arrangements (preferably 2- or 3-brick arrangements) having the same or different materials as the SCR component. Also mixtures of different materials on a brick are conceivable.
Substrate:substrates:
Die Katalysatoren (NSC, TWC, TWNSC) können auf einem monolithischen Kanal-Fluß-Tragkörper (Flow-Through) oder einem Wand-Fluß-Substrat (Wall-Flow) bzw. Partikelfilter angeordnet sein. The catalysts (NSC, TWC, TWNSC) can be disposed on a monolithic channel flow-through (flow-through) or wall-flow (wall-flow) substrate or particulate filter.
Flow-through monoliths are conventional catalyst carriers in the art which, as in the case of the abovementioned filter materials, can consist of metal or ceramic materials. Preference is given to using refractory ceramics such as cordierite. The ceramic flow-through monoliths usually have a honeycomb structure consisting of continuous channels, which is why flow-through monoliths are also referred to as channel flow monoliths. The exhaust gas can flow through the channels and comes into contact with the channel walls, which are coated with a catalytically active substance and possibly a storage material. The number of channels per area is characterized by the cell density, which is usually between 300 and 900 cells per square inch (cpsi). The wall thickness of the channel walls is between 0.5-0.05 mm for ceramics.
The term coating is understood to mean the application of catalytically active materials and / or storage components to a largely inert support body, which can be constructed like a previously described wall-flow filter or flow-through monolith. The coating performs the actual catalytic function and contains storage materials and / or catalytically active metals, which are usually deposited in highly disperse form on temperature-stable, high-surface area metal oxides. The coating is usually carried out by applying an aqueous suspension of the storage materials and catalytically active components - also called washcoat - on or in the wall of the inert support body. After application of the suspension, the support is dried and optionally calcined at elevated temperature. The coating may consist of a layer or be composed of several layers, which are applied one above the other (multilayer) and / or staggered (zoned) to a support body.
Gasoline powered vehicles produce soot particles, which are also regulated or soon to be legislated. The emission of soot particles, for example, should be given special consideration against the background of particulate matter pollution in inner cities. Against this background, it is advantageous in exhaust systems of vehicles which are operated with such engines to use particulate filters. The person skilled in the art knows how to position such advantageously in the corresponding exhaust system. For example, for diesel vehicles that produce a relatively cold exhaust gas, the introduction of a diesel particulate filter in the front region of the exhaust system, which is naturally more heat than the exhaust system in the underbody of the vehicle is available. The high heat is particularly advantageous for adequate regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. By contrast, vehicles with lean-burn gasoline engines produce a relatively hot exhaust gas. Here is therefore also conceivable to settle the particulate filter preferably in the underbody of the vehicle. This may advantageously be placed in front of or behind the uf-NOx reduction catalyst or the uf-NOx reduction catalyst is placed on a corresponding filter. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, however, the particle filter is combined with one of the two nitrogen oxide storage catalysts in such a way that it is present as a coating on or in the particle filter. This embodiment is highly preferred for vehicles with lean-burn gasoline engines.
As close to the engine (cc) is referred to in the context of this invention, an arrangement of the catalyst at a distance from the exhaust outlet of the cylinder of the engine of less than 120 cm, preferably less than 100 cm and most preferably less than 50 cm. Preferably, the close-coupled catalyst is arranged directly after the merger of the exhaust manifold in the exhaust pipe.
The combustion air ratio (A / F ratio, air / fuel ratio) sets the actual air mass m L, tats available for combustion in relation to the minimum necessary stoichiometric air mass m L, st required for complete combustion:
If λ = 1, then the ratio is considered to be a stoichiometric combustion air ratio with m L, tats = m L, st ; this is the case if theoretically all fuel molecules can completely react with atmospheric oxygen without any oxygen missing or unburned oxygen left over.
Für Verbrennungsmotoren gilt:
λ <1 (eg 0.9) means "lack of air": rich or rich exhaust gas mixture
λ> 1 (eg 1.1) means "excess air": lean or poor exhaust gas mixture
Statement: λ = 1.1 means that 10% more air is present than would be necessary for the stoichiometric reaction. This is at the same time as Air excess called. Preferably, however, an air-fuel mixture is maintained during the regeneration, which corresponds to a lambda value of 0.8 to 1. This value is particularly preferably between 0.85 and 0.99, very particularly preferably between 0.95 and 0.99.

The regeneration of the NOx storage catalytic converters takes place through the rich operation of the engine test bench over a defined time unit. The time unit is chosen so that all catalysts are sufficiently regenerated.
Of the 10 rich / lean cycles, the last 5 are used to calculate NOx conversion. This ensures that the system is in balance. The person skilled in the art knows this as a steady state.
The respective target temperatures at the catalytic converter are generated by changing the load on the engine test bench. In the experiment, 3 different load points were approached to generate the temperatures <300 ° C, <350 ° C and> 400 ° C at the

Dynamic driving cycle on a highly dynamic test stand to obtain the results of the
When applying the NEDC driving cycle to a highly dynamic test bench, engine data from a production vehicle that is in test mode are read out and transferred to the control unit of the highly dynamic engine test bench. Particular care should be taken to ensure that the reproducibility of the applied tests achieves the highest level of accuracy.
If the test conditions are applied as described above, the exhaust system is tested with and without bypass in the NEDC cycle.
NOX Sensor 3 stattfindet. In this case, as a rule, the termination of the respective lean or rich phases via
