Description
According to the current state of the art, brazing materials are used for brazing that have a lower melting temperature than the base materials to be joined DIN07. In principle, soldering differs from welding in that the base materials do not melt. Müller, W: Müller, J. U.: Löttechnik: Handbuch für die Praxis. German publishing house for welding technology, DVS publishing house (1995). The base materials are joined by a solder melt while remaining in the solid state. During soldering, a material connection is formed in the boundary layer between the joining partners. With certain material combinations, a certain degree of melting may be tolerated in the industry, depending on the application.
In: Handbook of laser welding technologies. Woodhead Publishing (2013), 3-16. The use of a vapor capillary, which forms at high power densities in a workpiece irradiated by a laser beam, is state of the art in welding (electron beam and laser beam welding) and is called deep-penetration welding. The vapor capillary is also called keyhole Katayama, S.: Introduction: fundamentals of laser welding. In: Handbook of laser welding technologies. Woodhead Publishing (2013), 3-16. In order to achieve sufficiently high power densities (referred to as intensity in laser technology), in contrast to conventional soldering, a laser beam with high beam quality is focused on the workpiece surface. (Basically, the focus of the laser beam is often not positioned exactly on the surface, but with a focus position whose distance from the workpiece surface is typically within a Rayleigh length.) For example, single-mode fiber lasers today can have focus diameters and thus minimal spot diameters on the workpiece of a few micrometers Naeem, M. "Developments in laser microwelding technology" Handbook of Laser Welding Technologies. Woodhead Publishing, 2013. 163-211. Typically, the focus or spot diameter when using a keyhole in the case of the laser beam is in the range between 10 µm and 500 µm, with different levels of power being required depending on the material in order to achieve keyhole formation. In the case of aluminum materials, for example in the case of solid-state lasers with a wavelength of approximately 1064 nm, the required power density is approximately 10E7 W/cm 2 and in the case of steel it is approximately 10E6 W/cm 2 . The unit is traditionally W/cm 2 . Single-mode lasers generally have (approximately) a Gaussian intensity distribution in the focus. Therefore, the power density in the spot is not constant, so that the threshold values for keyhole formation only reflect orders of magnitude. The diameter of the vapor capillary usually corresponds approximately to the spot diameter of the laser on the workpiece.
With conventional laser soldering, the energy introduced melts the soldering material and heats the base material. When soldering aluminum, for example, the use of soft solders, for example based on zinc, is state of the art in industry, the strength of the solder material being significantly lower than that of the base material. High-strength aluminum base solders can only be used to a very limited extent due to so-called heat conduction soldering, since the liquidus temperature of the solder material is only slightly or not above the solidus temperature of the aluminum base material Klocke, F.: Castell-Codesal, A.; Senster, P.: Laser beam brazing of aluminium. Wt workshop technology Online 93 (2003), 447-451, which often leads to melting of the base material. Even when brazing steel, the brazing materials available today are generally less strong than the base materials.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by a method for beam-based joining of metallic base materials according to claim 1. The spot area of the jet on the material surface is referred to as the point of impact. Advantageously, the shape of the vapor capillary is controlled or monitored. The deep welding effect (keyhole formation) is used for a direct energy input into the filler material. As a result, the energy efficiency can be significantly increased even when the melting temperature of the filler material is below the melting temperature of the base material, since with many materials the absorption by means of a vapor capillary (keyhole) is many times higher than the absorption in conventional beam soldering based on Fresnel absorption on the workpiece surface. For example, when using a laser with a wavelength of around 1064 nm, the degree of absorption with an existing keyhole in aluminum can be over 90%, while otherwise they are usually well below 20%, even if surface pretreatments such as roughening are taken into account. This basically applies to the classic material combinations of solder and base material, which are nowadays joined using laser soldering, where the liquidus temperature of the solder material is lower than the solidus temperature of the base material.
The method can be used in particular for electron beam and laser beam soldering.
The vapor capillary is generated limited to the filler material. In other words, the vapor capillary should not extend into the base material.
Advantageously, the point of impact of the beam on the filler material is moved spatially in order to spatially control the energy input. For this purpose, for example, suitable deflection devices such as when using a laser, e.g. B. be used in the form of scanner systems.
In particular, it can be provided that the speed of the spatial movement of the impact point of the jet on the filler material is varied, in particular depending on the position on the surface of the filler material.
Alternatively, a multi-spot beam source with multiple spatially distributed spots can be used to spatially control the energy input.
Advantageously, the power of the beam is varied over time.
In particular, it can be provided that the power of the beam is modulated as a function of the position on the surface of the filler material.
According to a further special embodiment of the present invention, the filler material is supplied in wire form. Alternatively, the additional material can be supplied as a molded part or pre-positioned. The wire and the shaped part can have different cross-sectional shapes.
Weiterhin kann der Grundwerkstoff vorteilhafterweise gekühlt werden.Furthermore, the base material can advantageously be cooled.
Finally, it can be provided that at least one intermediate layer exists or is applied between the base material and the filler material to specifically influence the spreading behavior and/or the flow behavior and/or the wetting behavior of the filler material on the base material and/or the contact temperature.
Since the resulting temperature in the boundary layer is between the initial temperatures of the base material and the filler material before contact, according to a special embodiment, the solder can even have had a higher temperature than the solidus temperature of the base material before contact, without the base material melting. As a result, this process is able to use filler material-base material combinations in which the filler material has the same or higher melting point than the base material, which significantly expands the scope of brazing. As long as the resulting contact temperature remains below the solidus temperature (melting temperature) of the base material, it does not melt. The contact temperature is determined not only by the local temperature difference between the filler metal and the base material before contact, but also by the material properties (in particular thermal conductivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity) and the spatial conditions (e.g. material thickness of the base material and volume of the solder melt pool), which influence the heat sink or heat accumulation. For example, thinner base plates are more likely to overheat than thicker ones. In addition, there is a contact resistance that causes a jump in temperature between two bodies. The surface quality plays a decisive role here. Due to the intended material connection between the filler and base material, this temperature jump is neglected in the following description and not discussed in detail. It should be emphasized that this jump in temperature fundamentally has a positive effect on the process.
The base material usually consists of sheet metal, semi-finished products, components or assemblies with a material thickness between 0.1 mm and 10 mm (in particular between 0.5 mm and 3 mm). The filler material usually consists of wires with different cross-sectional shapes (in particular circular and triangular cross-sectional shapes) and cross-sectional areas between 0.04 mm 2 and 100 mm 2 (in particular between 0.25 mm 2 and 10 mm 2 ). The additional material can be solid material or flux-cored wire with powder filling. Other cross-sectional shapes can also be used, with the shape generally being based on the subsequent shape of the seam. Instead of wires, molded parts can also be fed in or pre-positioned.
Additional and base materials are metals (especially aluminum alloys, types of steel, titanium alloys, copper alloys, nickel alloys and shape memory alloys). The metallic filler materials can be the same as or different from the base materials.
In principle, the process can be carried out as a discontinuous or continuous process. Individual joining points (e.g. via drops) or seams. Seams can be created by a continuous feed of filler material, or by means of successive drops. The feeding speed of the additional material can deviate from the joining speed (relative speed between processing optics and base material). This is even more the norm. The feed rate does not have to be constant over time.

In addition to scanner systems, it is conceivable to implement a multi-spot approach by using multi-spot beam sources, where the heat input can be spatially controlled not by the spatial modulation of a beam but by the spatial distribution of several stationary beams (at least two beams, probably between 6 and 36 beams). Here - but also in general - it is also conceivable that the keyhole depths are measured and adjusted by keyhole depth measuring systems during the process, so that online control is possible. The beam power can be selected independently for each spot.
The method can also be coupled with process control in the form of online temperature measurement in order to process parameters such as e.g. B. to regulate beam power or speed of movement of the beam.
The resulting contact temperature shifts to lower values as the initial temperature of the base material falls, so that additional cooling of the base material can lead to an expansion of the process window or the range of joinable material combinations.
Between the base material and the additional material, intermediate layers can exist or be applied separately, which influence the spreading and/or flow and/or wetting behavior of the solder on the base material. The intermediate layer(s) could, for example, be a coating on the base material or a foil fed into the process be introduced. Layers with a low melting point, such as zinc coatings, can have a positive effect on the spreading behavior. Intermediate layers of this type also influence the heat transfer and the development of the contact temperature, either intentionally or unintentionally. This can have a positive influence on the process. The use of flux between filler material and base material has the same effect as with conventional laser soldering. Fluxes remove oxide layers and prevent or reduce their formation during the process. This promotes the wetting process or the formation of the material connection.
