Description
The invention relates to the fields of chemistry and mechanical engineering and relates to surfaces to be metallized of an inorganic and / or organic material, such as those used for painting, coating or printing of components, for example, as electromagnetic shielding, as reflectors, can be used as conductive lightweight components, as printed circuit boards or for decorative applications in the sanitary sector or as jewelry or ornaments, and a method for their preparation.
The metallization of surfaces requires a good adhesion of the applied metal layer on the surface of the relevant component. For the metallization of surfaces, in particular plastic surfaces, several methods are known from the prior art.
In order to achieve a metallization of a plastic surface, the plastic surface is modified (activated) in the method previously used most often in a first process step, for which various possibilities of modification of the prior art are known. Up to now, the surface of a plastic part has usually been modified after the shaping process with mordants, etchants and / or primers in order to improve the adhesive properties of the subsequently applied metal layer.
ABl. L 396 (30.12.2006), S. 1–516). Die Verwendung von Cr(III)-Verbindungen wird dagegen für weitere vier Jahre (Luftfahrtindustrie sieben Jahre) erlaubt sein Progress on applications for REACH authorization of several uses of chromium trioxide – RAC and SEAC draft opinions. Pressemitteilung EUI-1200605092v6 vom 27.06.2016, veröffentlicht unter http://www.jonesdayreach.com/Press%20Release/Press%20 Release%20CTACSub%20Consortium%20June%202016.pdf.).The quality of the metallization and adhesion of the layer to the surface of the plastic parts is influenced, among other things, by the type of modification of the plastic surface. This is largely responsible for a high adhesion of the entire metal layer to the plastic surface. It is known to modify the surface by pickling. Usually CrO 3 - or Cr 2 O 3 compounds are used. A disadvantage of this type of modification of the plastic surface is that CrO 3 - or Cr 2 O 3 -Beizen are toxic and carcinogenic, which is why their use in the European Union from September 2016 requires a special case-related exemption. In accordance with the currently envisaged amendment of the REACH Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006), a definitive ban on the use of chemicals containing chromium (VI) will apply from 21.09.2017 (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 of the European Chemicals Act) Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), establishing a European Chemicals Agency, amending Directive 1999/45 / EC and repealing Regulation (EEC) No 793 / 93 of the Council, Commission Regulation (EC) No 1488/94, Council Directive 76/769 / EEC and Directives 91/155 / EEC, 93/67 / EEC, 93/105 / EC and 2000/21 V Commission, OJ L 396, 30.12.2006, pp. 1-516). In contrast, the use of Cr (III) compounds will be allowed for another four years (aviation industry seven years). After the modification of the plastic surfaces further process steps, such as rinsing with water and the seeding with precious metals or metals are realized.
Derart behandelte Kunststoffoberflächen weisen eine bessere Haftung bei nachfolgenden technologischen Schritten (insbesondere bei Fügeprozessen) auf (Mehrkomponentenspritzgießtechnik 2000, Springer-VDI-Verlag, Düsseldorf, 2000).Plasma and corona treatment are the most widely used methods of pretreating plastic surfaces for metallization. By electrical discharge (corona) in air or in plasmas (under vacuum or under atmospheric conditions), the substrates are activated at the surface, that is, modified by formation of polar groups and destruction of crystalline domains. As a result, increased accessibility for interdiffusing coating materials and increased reactivity on the plastic surface is achieved. Plastic surfaces treated in this way exhibit better adhesion in subsequent technological steps (in particular in joining processes) (multicomponent injection molding technique 2000, Springer-VDI-Verlag, Dusseldorf, 2000).

A. et al.: „ABS Polymer Electroless Plating throug a One-Step Poly(acryl acid) Covalent Grafting“, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Vol. 2, No. 4, Seite 1177–1183, 2010). Also known is a method for the electroless plating of an ABS polymer, in which the surface of a specimen of ABS is modified in a first method step with a solution of 1,4-phenylenediammonium dichloride, HCl, NaNO 2 and acrylic acid. Subsequently, the modified specimen is immersed in an ionized solution of NH 3 , CuSO 4 and water at room temperature and then the Cu 2+ ions in a NaBH 4 / NaOH solution by immersing the specimen for 10 min at 40 ° C to metallic Copper reduced. Finally, a platinum layer is applied by electroless plating (Garcia, A. et al .: "ABS Polymer Electroless Plating Thrroug a One-Step Poly (Acrylic) Covalent Grafting", ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Vol. 2, No. 4, Page 1177-1183, 2010).
Furthermore, it is known and desired according to the prior art to also metallise surfaces of other electrically non-conductive materials, such as plastics. Thus, surfaces of other materials, such as glass, alloys, oxides, semiconductors or ceramics, to be metallized. Such surfaces are known, for example, nickel-plated, galvanized, tinned, copper-plated, chromed or coated with other materials, such as aluminum and magnesium alloys, steel, or technical alloys of these metals, or with precious metals, such as gold or silver or their alloys. Preferred alloys for the coating of surfaces are copper, zinc, alloys of zinc / iron, zinc / manganese, zinc / cobalt or tin, alloys of tin / copper, tin / zinc, tin / lead, tin / silver, tin / bismuth.
Another detectable property for the quality of the metallized surface is, in addition to the adhesive strength, the peel strength of the metal layer on the surface. This is determined above all by the different coefficients of thermal expansion of the surface material and metal layer and the resulting shear stresses. These can become so great under mechanical loads that composite adhesion fails and the metal layer can be pulled off the surface. Such peel strengths can be determined by various methods (plastic metallization, manual for theory and practice, Eugen L. Lenze Verlag, series Electroplating and Surface Treatment, 1991) According to the prior art are composite chemical adhesion, chemical bonding forces, Van der Waals forces or coordinative bonding forces are mentioned as reasons for the adhesion between surface material and coating.
- – Metallisierung.
- - Substrate cleaning In several rinsing stations and using ultrasound, the substrate surfaces are degreased.
- Roughening of the surface by pickling, etching agent and / or primer By this step submicroscopic cavities are introduced into the surface, whereby a mechanical interlocking with the coating material can take place. Crystalline and semi-crystalline areas in the surface area are also widened and destroyed, so that interdiffusion processes can take place on contact with a coating material at the forming interface.
- - Oxidation of the surface This is usually realized with very strong oxidizing agents in combination with strong acids or alkalis, or by means of laser, plasmas, flame treatments or by other formation of functional groups on the surfaces, resulting in an increase in adhesion between surface material and coating material.
- - Deposition of precious metal nuclei on the surface
- - metallization.
Vorteilhafterweise werden Metallkationen des Zn, Ni, Cu, Au, Pd, Sn, Co, Mn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Bi, Ag oder Gemische dieser Metallkationen (zur Abscheidung von Legierungen) gelöst, komplexiert und dann abgeschieden (Kunststoff-Metallisierung, Handbuch für Theorie und Praxis, Eugen L. Lenze Verlag, Schriftenreihe Galvanotechnik und Oberflächenbehandlung, 1991)The metallization usually takes place via chemical reduction, in which a metal bath contains metal salts in solution or melt and complexing agents in which the metals are in the form of cations to be deposited. Advantageously, metal cations of Zn, Ni, Cu, Au, Pd, Sn, Co, Mn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Bi, Ag or mixtures of these metal cations (for the deposition of alloys) are dissolved, complexed and then deposited (plastic metallization, Handbook for Theory and Practice, Eugen L. Lenze Verlag, Series Electroplating and Surface Treatment, 1991)
Another known possibility of deposition is the electrodeposition of metals on surfaces.

Unter den im Wasser herrschenden Bedingungen reagiert Dopamin in mehreren Schritten zu einer Polymermatrix, einem stark vernetzten System aus Makromolekülen (Wikipedia, Stichwort Miesmuscheln).Dopamine is also known from nature as the "super glue" of, for example, common mussels (Mytilus edulis). At their feet, the mussels segregate threads for their attachment, which consist of a protein adhesive, the main component of which is 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine, called "dopamine" for short. Under the conditions prevailing in the water dopamine reacts in several steps to a polymer matrix, a strongly networked system of macromolecules (Wikipedia, keyword mussels).
A disadvantage of all known methods for the metallization of surfaces is that on the one hand the materials and methods used for metallization are complex and polluting and on the other hand, the adhesion of the metal layer on any surfaces in many cases is not sufficiently good.
The object of the present invention is to specify metallized surfaces whose coating system consists of environmentally compatible materials and which have a very good adhesion between the surface and the coating, and further in specifying a method for producing such metallized surfaces with a simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive process.

In the method according to the invention for producing metallized surfaces coated with electrically conductive materials, an at least monolayered polydopamine layer is applied to one or more surfaces of an inorganic and / or organic material or a composite material of these materials from an aqueous solution of dopamine by means of electroless plating and subsequently introduced a solution with at least one metallic material in the aqueous solution of dopamine, and thus realized a simultaneous deposition of polydopamine and metal atoms or metal clusters on the at least monolayer Polydopaminschicht, wherein in the aqueous solution, the dissolved metal ions are at least partially reduced and the dopamine oxidatively polymerized in which an amount of dissolved at least one metallic material is added to the aqueous solution of dopamine which forms a percolating network Furthermore, the deposition of dopamine and metal atoms or metal clusters on the surface is carried out until at least on the or the surfaces of the polydopamine layer, the network of the metal atoms or metal clusters can be at least electrically connected, and subsequently a layer of a electrically conductive material is realized by means of galvanic deposition using electric current on the provided with metal atoms or metal clusters polydopamine and electrically connected to the network.
Advantageously, the surfaces are cleaned prior to the application of the polydopamine layer.
Also advantageously, an aqueous dopamine solution is used with a dopamine concentration of 0.1 to 120 g / l.
Further advantageously, dissolved metal ions are added to the aqueous dopamine solution.
And also advantageously, the metal ions are used dissolved in water. It is also advantageous if the aqueous dopamine solution is heated to a temperature between 20 and 80 ° C. before the addition of the metal ions.
It is furthermore advantageous if a polydopamine layer with thicknesses of 2 nm to 40 nm is produced.
It is also advantageous if immersion, spraying or spin-coating is realized as the electroless metallization process.
It is also advantageous if, during the deposition of polydopamine and metal atoms or metal clusters at the same time as deposition, chemical deposition or galvanic deposition using electrical current are realized.
The solution according to the invention makes it possible for the first time to specify metallized surfaces whose coating system consists of environmentally compatible materials and which has a very good quality Having adhesion between the surface and coating, and further to provide a method by which the production of metallized surfaces can be realized easily, environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
The surfaces to be metallized consist of at least one inorganic or organic material or a composite material of these materials. Such materials may be glass, metals, alloys, oxides, semiconductor materials and / or ceramics and / or polymers, wood and / or textiles. In the context of the invention, metallised surfaces are to be understood as meaning surfaces which have been coated with electrically conductive materials.
The surfaces to be metallized can advantageously be surfaces of inorganic or organic materials in the form of a compact component, a molded part, a film, a textile fabric or a nonwoven.
The surfaces of the materials to be coated are advantageously cleaned, for example degreased, and subsequently at least partially covered with a polydopamine layer, this polydopamine layer being applied from an aqueous solution of dopamine. This polydopamine layer adheres very well to the surface.
According to the invention, the polydopamine layer has at least partially reduced metal atoms or metal clusters. These metal atoms or clusters have a concentration which increases over the thickness of the polydopamine layer and with increasing distance from the surface of the inorganic and / or organic materials. It is furthermore essential to the invention that these metal atoms or metal clusters form a network. This network is a percolating network. According to the percolation theory, the formation of contiguous areas (clusters) in case of random occupation of structures is described.
Accordingly, the metal atoms or clusters according to the invention in the polydopamine layer are associated and form clusters or the percolating network, whereby the electrical conductivity of this network is realized.
In this case, it is furthermore essential to the invention that the concentration of at least partially reduced metal atoms or metal clusters in the polydopamine layer on the surface (s) facing the surface of the inorganic and / or organic material is such that the network of these metal atoms or metal clusters is at least electrical conductive contact is accessible. This accessibility to the network of metal atoms or metal clusters must be realized because polydopamine is not electrically conductive. For this reason, it is also necessary to introduce the metal atoms or metal clusters into the polydopamine layer by means of electroless metallization processes. As soon as the percolating network is present and also accessible for electrically conductive contacting, then the subsequent layer of an electrically conductive, advantageously metallic material can be carried out by means of chemical or galvanic deposition using electric current.
According to the present invention, a solution of at least one metallic material is employed in the aqueous dopamine solution for incorporation into the polydopamine layer, but which is at least partially reduced in the aqueous solution of dopamine and thus present in the polydopamine layer in the form of metal atoms or clusters while simultaneously the dopamine is oxidatively polymerized to polydopamine. Water can be used as solvent for the metallic material and dopamine. Known additives to the solution, such as complexing agents, surfactants, buffer additives, etc., may be added.
After applying the layer of electrically conductive material to the polydopamine layer with the percolating network is coated with an electrically conductive material, ie metallized surface in which the polydopamine adheres very well to the surface of the inorganic and / or organic material and the layer of electrically conductive material also adheres well to the networked polydopamine layer.
Dopamine is a natural product or natural product based synthetic material, which is used in the invention and is very environmentally friendly.
The electroconductive material coated surface of the present invention is prepared by applying a polydopamine layer to one or more surfaces of an inorganic and / or organic material from an aqueous solution of dopamine by an electroless method such as dipping, spraying. In this case, an at least monolayer of oxidatively polymerized polydopamine is first deposited on the surfaces of the inorganic and / or organic material from an aqueous solution of dopamine. To improve the oxidative polymerization of the dopamine, oxidizing agents may be added to the aqueous solution. Subsequently, to the aqueous solution of dopamine continuously or discontinuously, a solution with dissolved metal salts, the metal ions included, added. The metal ions present in the aqueous solution are reduced by the dopamine and at the same time the dopamine is oxidatively polymerized. From the aqueous solution with dopamine and metal ions together polydopamine and metal atoms or metal clusters are deposited on the at least monolayer Polydopaminschicht. By reducing the dopamine concentration in the aqueous solution and by depositing polydopamine on the surface of the inorganic and / or organic material, the proportion of deposited metal atoms or metal clusters in the deposited layer increases. In this case, the at least partially reduced metal atoms or metal clusters are introduced into the resulting polydopamine layer and deposited in the form of a percolating network. During this electroless metallization process, dopamine is thus polymerized and deposited on the surface oxidatively, and the metal ions reduced thereby are incorporated as metal atoms or metal clusters into the polydopamine layer and deposited as a percolating network.
Advantageously, the inorganic and / or organic surfaces intended for the coating can be cleaned, for example degreased.
This combined metal reduction and oxidative polydopamine deposition can be controlled and targeted by process parameters such as change in temperature, dopamine concentration, addition of oxidants, pH change, stirring and / or mixing. This can be determined by the expert with a few tests and realize the optimal conditions for its surfaces to be metallized.
The gradient of the reduced metal atoms or metal clusters of the percolating network in the polydopamine layer increases toward the forming layer of electrically conductive materials, the gradient being adjusted via the deposition via the deposition process during electroless plating. During electroless plating as a deposition process, the dopamine concentration in the aqueous solution is reduced, and the metal ion concentration in the aqueous solution increases, so that a closed metal layer can be present on the surface to be coated with electrically conductive materials and advantageously present.
The concentrations of dopamine and metal ions in the aqueous solution may be altered during the process, for example by the addition of aqueous metal salt or / and dopamine solution. By lowering the pH, e.g. by adding an acid, the rate of polydopamine deposition is reduced.
Basically, an amount of metal ions must be added and present in the aqueous solution to form a percolating network of the at least partially reduced metal atoms or metal clusters within the polydopamine layer. These are advantageously 0.2 to 5 liters of solution of at least one metal salt per 1 liter of aqueous dopamine solution. The percolation limit can be determined by the sudden increase in electrical conductivity with little effort.
After the percolating network has been formed in the polydopamine layer and is accessible at least at the surface (s) of the polydopamine layer not facing the surface of the inorganic and / or organic material at least for an electrically conductive contact, at least one layer is formed by means of a deposition process using electric current electrically conductive materials deposited on the polydopamine layer to the network. This layer of electrically conductive materials is electrically connected to the network of metal atoms or metal clusters and adheres very well to the surface of the polydopamine layer. As materials of the electrically conductive layer, not only the metallic materials but also carbon blacks, carbon nanotubes, graphenes or fullerenes can be deposited.
Finally, according to the invention coated with electrically conductive materials, metallized surfaces, which have been prepared with a simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive process.
The solution according to the invention has the advantages that aqueous solutions are used for the production of the metallized surfaces and that strongly oxidizing substances, strong acids or strong bases, primers and organic solvents for pretreatment of the substrate surfaces to be coated can be dispensed with. Furthermore, it is very advantageous that the choice of coating materials is virtually unlimited. Also, the surfaces to be coated are not affected and altered during the production of the layers, or in particular not roughened and not weakened. The production of the coatings of the surfaces with respect to the desired components and geometries is virtually unlimited and does not have to be adapted to the coating process.
The invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to several exemplary embodiments.
Beispiel 1example 1
A round plate-shaped injection molded part of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of 3 mm, which was previously cleaned in an ultrasonic bath for 10 min in water, is immersed in 1 l of an aqueous, oxygen-saturated dopamine solution with a dopamine concentration of 10 g / l and a pH of the dopamine solution of 9 at 60 ° C immersed. After 1 h, a closed polydopamine layer has deposited on the surface of the injection-molded part. Subsequently, the dopamine solution is added to 1 l of a commercial aqueous nickel (II) salt solution having a nickel ion concentration of 23 g / l. Now takes place the combined, the selected concentration ratio of dopamine to nickel ions corresponding layer deposition of polydopamine and nickel atoms or nickel clusters. The concentration ratio of dopamine to nickel ions is at least 0.5 at the beginning of the combined deposition and further decreases to 0.1 as the deposition progresses. After reaching a layer thickness of about 1 micron, the injection molded part is removed from the solution. On the surface of the injection-molded part is now a polydopamine layer with a percolated network of metallic nickel, which is deposited on the surface as a nickel layer and electrically conductive accessible.
The injection molded part with the electrically conductive nickel layer on the surface is then further metallically finished. For this purpose, it is now introduced into a galvanic bath with dissolved nickel (II) salts and applied a 100 micron thick metallic nickel layer on the existing percolating nickel layer.
The coated and nickel-metallized injection-molded part has been coated with a method in which only environmentally compatible materials and solvents have been used in addition to the metal bath. The coating on the injection molded part has a very good adhesion.
Beispiel 2Example 2
A plate-shaped injection molded part of bisphenol A-based polycarbonate (PC) with the dimensions 10 cm × 10 cm × 3 mm, which was previously cleaned in an ultrasonic bath for 10 min in water, is dissolved in 1 l of an aqueous, oxygen-saturated dopamine solution with a dopamine concentration of 10 g / l and a pH of the dopamine solution of 9 at 60 ° C introduced. After 30 minutes, an approximately 5 to 10 nm thick closed polydopamine layer has deposited on the surface of the injection-molded part. Subsequently, 1 l of a commercially available aqueous silver ion solution having a silver ion concentration of 30 g / l is added. There is the combined, the concentration ratio of dopamine / silver ions corresponding layer deposition of polydopamine and silver atoms or silver clusters. The molar concentration ratio of dopamine to silver ions is about 0.25 at the beginning of the combined deposition. The concentration of silver ions in the dopamine solution is discontinuously varied every 20 minutes during the deposition by adding 30 ml of the commercial silver aqueous solution having a silver ion concentration of 120 g / l or adding 20 g of dopamine. These concentration ratios give a discontinuous distribution of the silver atoms or silver clusters in the polydopamine layer in the form of sandwich layers, each of which consists either predominantly of polydopamine or predominantly of silver atoms or silver clusters in the form of a percolating network. A layer sequence of alternately 6 layers each with predominantly polydopamine and predominantly silver atoms or silver clusters in the form of a percolating network is deposited, the surface layer being a layer with predominantly silver atoms or silver clusters.
After reaching a corresponding layer sequence, the injection molded part is removed from the solution. The injection molded part with the electrically conductive silver layer on the surface is then further equipped. For this purpose, the injection molded part is now placed in a galvanic bath with copper ions and applied a 20 micron thick copper layer on the existing silver layer.
