Description
The invention relates to a method for detecting a degree of loading of a particle filter of an internal combustion engine, preferably a particle filter of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine (Otto particle filter - OPF) according to independent claim 1 and an implementation according to the
Particle filters are used to clean the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines of solid components, such as soot particles consisting of agglomerated carbon atoms. Particle filters consist, for example, of porous or wall-flooded ceramic filters which, above a certain loading level, increase the exhaust pressure between the particle filter and the internal combustion engine, i.e. the exhaust back pressure, to such an extent that the efficiency of the charge exchange and combustion of the internal combustion engine is reduced. Particle filters must therefore be cleaned regularly, which is also referred to as regeneration. Cleaning or regeneration takes place at elevated temperatures in the particle filter, which are generated, for example, by post-injection of unburned fuel or other engine measures. This reduces the overall efficiency of the internal combustion engine and should therefore only be carried out when necessary. To determine the need for regeneration of the particle filter, the loading level of the particle filter is determined.
Particle filters have been used for some time in self-igniting internal combustion engines (diesel engines). In spark-ignited internal combustion engines (gasoline engines), the use of particle filters is appropriate to comply with current and future emission standards with regard to the mass and number of particles emitted, especially since the introduction of direct injection. The loading level of the particle filter in diesel engines is usually derived from the difference in exhaust pressure before and after the particle filter or from the difference in exhaust pressure before the particle filter and the ambient pressure. This indirect measuring principle leads to values that are not very meaningful in gasoline engines, since the differential pressure cannot be measured with sufficient reliability due to the exhaust gas volume flow fluctuating strongly depending on the load, especially in the partial load range.

In contrast, the object of the invention is to provide an improved determination of the loading level of a particle filter.
This object is achieved by a method according to the measures of independent claim 1. Advantageous developments of the invention are characterized in the dependent claims. The features listed individually in the patent claims can be combined with one another in a technologically meaningful manner and can be supplemented by explanatory facts from the description and/or details from the figures, whereby further embodiments of the invention are shown.
The invention relates to a method for detecting a degree of loading of a particle filter arranged in an exhaust system of a preferably spark-ignited and/or quantity-controlled internal combustion engine (BKM). Spark-ignited and/or quantity-controlled BKMs are, for example, gasoline engines in which the differential pressure across the particle filter does not allow a valid statement to be made about the degree of loading of the particle filter across all operating points of the BKM, in contrast to self-igniting and/or quality-controlled BKMs, for example diesel engines. The particle filter is usually arranged downstream of the BKM in an exhaust system of the same. In the course of the method according to the invention, the absolute exhaust pressure in the exhaust system of the internal combustion engine downstream of an exhaust valve is determined, preferably measured or modeled directly or via intermediate variables, and the degree of loading of the particle filter is determined as a function of the determined absolute exhaust pressure. The absolute exhaust pressure can be determined for each individual cylinder directly downstream of an exhaust valve, which means that the exhaust pressure is determined upstream of the section of an exhaust manifold attached to the cylinder head of the exhaust manifold in which the individual cylinder exhaust channels of at least two cylinders are fluidically connected, i.e. the exhaust gases of several cylinders are transferred into a common pipe. Preferably, however, the absolute exhaust pressure is determined in the exhaust manifold downstream of the section in which the exhaust gases of several or all cylinders connected to the manifold are fluidically connected, i.e. the exhaust gases of these cylinders have been transferred into the common pipe.
The loading level can be expressed by two discrete states, for example ready to absorb particles and ready for regeneration. It can also be determined as a discrete or continuous scale between not loaded and fully loaded, whereby the regeneration can then be scheduled, i.e. brought forward or postponed, depending on other parameters, in particular other operating conditions.
According to the invention, the absolute exhaust gas pressure in the exhaust system is determined immediately before an exhaust valve opens. By definition, an exhaust valve is considered to be open as soon as the exhaust gas pressure immediately downstream of the exhaust valve changes significantly, i.e. in a way that is relevant to measurement technology. The change in the exhaust gas pressure or the signal from the pressure sensor representing the exhaust gas pressure will usually be represented as a pressure increase by the exhaust gases emitted during the exhaust stroke. In the lower and middle load range, valve over-pressure can cause the exhaust gas pressure to increase. cut-off (simultaneous opening of intake and exhaust valves during the intake and/or exhaust stroke) can also result in a pressure reduction if the pressure in the intake manifold is correspondingly low. The influence of the cylinder pressure, which is usually not precisely known, on the pressure signal can usually be determined from a valve lift of approx. 0.1 mm, although the actual opening can shift slightly due to design properties of the combustion chamber or the intake port design, for example. Immediately before the exhaust valve opens means that, compared to the total duration of a working stroke (180°), only a very short section of the working stroke before the exhaust valve opens is considered. A very short section can be defined as 5%, preferably less than 3% of the total duration of a working stroke. This corresponds to a crank angle range of 9° to less than approx. 5°, whereby the section can also be expressed as a time period dependent on or independent of the speed, as well as by the number of discrete measured values of the preferably high-resolution exhaust pressure signal curve. In any case, the exhaust valves of the respective cylinder are closed. Determining the absolute exhaust pressure in the exhaust system immediately before an exhaust valve opens also means that the absolute exhaust pressure in the exhaust system is determined in a defined time or crank angle range or at a defined point in time or at a defined crank angle position immediately before the detected opening of the exhaust valve.
The relationship between the determined absolute exhaust pressure and the degree of loading can finally be read out from a map or a lookup table or modeled using a functional relationship for implementation in an engine control unit.
The inventors have recognized that only the absolute exhaust pressure measured at the right place at the right time allows a reliable statement to be made about the degree of loading of the particle filter. This absolutely measured exhaust pressure is advantageously also suitable for determining the degree of loading of a gasoline particle filter. The solution also avoids problems that occur in the state of the art. Absolute exhaust pressures of fixed crank angles or crank angle ranges are not meaningful with variable valve control, and the use of extreme values of the exhaust pressure is also not meaningful, as these are primarily load-dependent and are too strongly influenced by other operating modes of modern BKM, such as flushing processes or valve overlaps. Thus, according to the invention, all engine operating points can advantageously be measured and analyzed independently of their set control times and are therefore suitable for providing a statement about the loading state of the particle filter.
The aforementioned events, such as flushing processes or valve overlaps, no longer have to be calculated out or compensated for by modeling in order to determine the loading state of the particulate filter, since they have only a minimal influence on the determined absolute exhaust gas pressure when the method according to the invention is used.
In an advantageous embodiment, the determined absolute exhaust gas pressure is corrected depending on the exhaust gas mass flow and the exhaust gas temperature determined immediately downstream of the exhaust valve and/or the speed of the internal combustion engine. This makes it possible to implement a functional relationship between the exhaust gas back pressure and the relevant operating conditions of the BKM in a particularly advantageous manner, whereby these variables are recorded anyway, for example in the on-board diagnosis, and the correction of the absolute exhaust gas pressure is not computationally complex.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the degree of loading of the particle filter is determined as a function of an average value of the determined absolute exhaust pressure or the corrected absolute exhaust pressure of several consecutive exhaust strokes. In principle, different determinable average values are conceivable, for example the moving average or the median, whereby a certain number of the most recently determined absolute exhaust pressures of several consecutive working strokes or exhaust strokes is considered as a discrete basic quantity for determining the average value and not, as in the prior art, the non-representative average value of pressures of a working stroke is formed.
In an advantageous embodiment, the degree of loading of the particle filter is determined by comparing the determined absolute exhaust pressure or the corrected absolute exhaust pressure or the mean value of the determined absolute exhaust pressure or the corrected absolute exhaust pressure with a specified threshold value or with a previously defined functional relationship. This advantageously provides a simple and clear statement on the need to regenerate the particle filter.
Also advantageous is a control unit of an internal combustion engine, in particular with an exhaust system and a particle filter arranged in the exhaust system, for example an engine control unit, wherein the control unit comprises a computing unit and a memory element. This enables the use of the method according to the invention in exhaust gas purification by means of a particle filter, for example in a motor vehicle or a stationary application.

In order for the particle filter to be operational throughout its entire life cycle, it must be regenerated regularly. The particles collected in it, or the agglomerations of carbon, unburned fuel and other combustion residues, must therefore be thermally and chemically broken down so that solid particles that should not be released into the environment can be stored again.
Depending on the dimensioning of the particulate filter and the particle load, the loading level usually reaches a threshold after several 10 to 100 hours of operation, at which point the exhaust back pressure affects the charge exchange in the cylinders and thus the efficiency of the engine. Regeneration should take place at this point at the latest. This process requires energy, which is why it should not be carried out without reason and/or inefficiently. In addition, regeneration must be carried out in good time so that the amount of soot or particles does not become so large that regeneration is no longer possible in the normal operating range of the internal combustion engine. It is therefore advantageous to know the loading level of the particulate filter in order to be able to operate it in the most energy-efficient way.
In the method according to the invention, the exhaust pressure in the exhaust manifold is determined regularly, i.e. at least once per exhaust stroke of the respective cylinder (step S1). A working stroke of a cylinder is defined as 180° crank angle or half an engine revolution. In a four-stroke engine, for example, a complete working cycle, consisting of intake stroke, compression stroke, expansion stroke (also called working stroke, deviating from the working stroke generally used here) and exhaust stroke, of a cylinder takes place in 2 crankshaft revolutions, i.e. 720°. Accordingly, every 180° crank angle (half crankshaft revolution) the same working stroke, e.g. exhaust stroke, takes place through one of the four cylinders in the corresponding firing order of the cylinders.
Alternatively or preferably, the exhaust gas pressure in the exhaust manifold is permanently measured with high resolution, e.g. every 0.1 ms, by a pressure sensor. The high-resolution exhaust gas pressure signal represents the exhaust gas pressure curve and is recorded as a function of the crank angle, more precisely the crank angle position, and/or an absolute or relative time signal. Both the crank angle or the crank angle position and the speed of the crankshaft (engine speed) are usually recorded in engines via angle of rotation and speed sensors, for example Hall sensors. The speed and angle of rotation information is used by the engine control unit, for example, to implement the correct ignition and injection sequence. The engine control unit therefore recognizes the exhaust stroke of each cylinder in advance, which, according to the invention, creates a prediction window for the opening and closing of the exhaust valve. This The prediction or expectation window can be further narrowed down by additional engine parameters, for example based on variable valve timing known to the engine control system.
B. 5 Inkremente) vor Öffnung des Auslassventils entnommen (Schritt S3).In the next step S2, the determined exhaust pressure curve is now monitored in real time with regard to the opening of the exhaust valve. In the process, a significant influence of the cylinder pressure on the pressure signal is determined. This can be done using a Fourier transformation or by determining the gradient. If no significant result can be achieved, the respective power stroke is disregarded or, if such a result is achieved across several power strokes and cylinders, the constant absolute exhaust pressure can be used to determine the degree of loading. However, if the influence of the cylinder pressure and thus the opening of the exhaust valve has been recognized with a predetermined degree of certainty, the absolute exhaust pressure is determined immediately before the exhaust valve opens. The exhaust pressure signal is fed to the engine control as a digitized signal, taking into account the WKS sampling theorem (Whittaker-Kotelnikow-Shannon; previously: Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem), regardless of whether the measurement itself is analog or digital. The time or crank angle position of the opening of the exhaust valve is thus known and the absolute exhaust pressure to be determined is taken from the exhaust pressure signal at a constant time (e.g. 0.5 ms), a constant crank angle (e.g. 6°) and/or a defined number of discrete measured values (e.g. 5 increments) before the exhaust valve opens (step S3).
The degree of loading of the particle filter is now determined from this determined absolute exhaust pressure (step S4). A degree of loading is assigned to the absolute exhaust pressure using characteristic maps, look-up tables or corresponding models. In order to make the result more robust, it is possible to standardize the determined absolute exhaust pressure, whereby the determined absolute exhaust pressure is converted into a corrected absolute exhaust pressure using the exhaust mass flow and the exhaust temperature, i.e. the exhaust volume flow and thus indirectly the prevailing load state of the internal combustion engine and/or its speed. Furthermore, the determined absolute exhaust pressure (or the corrected absolute exhaust pressure) can be determined as a moving average, e.g. of the last five, ten or twenty determined (or corrected) absolute exhaust pressures. Both the corrected absolute exhaust pressure and one of the averages based on several determined or corrected absolute exhaust pressures can be used instead of the determined absolute exhaust pressure to determine the degree of loading of the particle filter using a characteristic map or a look-up table. Both the characteristic maps and the lookup tables or the functional models used can simulate the aging of the particulate filter by means of long-term corrections.
The method according to the invention can be used to make a decision regarding the regeneration or, if necessary, the inspection of the particle filter (E1). If the determined loading level of the particle filter exceeds a defined, predetermined threshold value, which can also be subject to long-term correction, the engine control decides to regenerate the particle filter (step S5). This is done using known internal combustion engine methods, e.g. an increase in exhaust gas temperature by phase shifting the ignition timing or injecting fuel during the expansion or exhaust stroke. In addition, depending on the internal combustion engine concept, an increase in the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is appropriate. If the specific threshold value has not yet been exceeded, the method according to the invention starts again with step S1, just as in the case of a regeneration carried out (S5).
