Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of methacrylates and methacrylic acid starting from acetone cyanohydrin via 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide and higher-boiling esters of hydroxynobutyric acid.
Description
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of methacrylates and methacrylic acid (MAS) starting from acetone cyanohydrin via 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide (HIBA) and higher-boiling esters of hydroxyisobutyric acid (HIBS).
There are numerous processes for preparing methacrylates, especially methyl methacrylate (MMA) starting from ACH. Recently, a sulfuric acid-free preparation process has been described for this purpose, which produces HIBA by means of highly selective hydrolysis of ACH on a heterogeneous manganese dioxide contact and converts this in a second step with methanol to 2-hydroxyisobutyrate (HIBSM), whereby ammonia is quasi quantitatively released and worked up. In a further step, HIBSM is cross-esterified with MAS, yielding MMA and HIBS. The latter is converted back to MAS by elimination of water.

For the preparation of ACH from HCN and acetone according to sub-step a) acetone is used in a molar excess, based on HCN. Preferably, the molar ratio of acetone to HCN may be in the range of 1.1: 1 to 7: 1, preferably 1.5: 1 to 5: 1, and most preferably in the range of 2: 1 to 3: 1.
Preferably, the reaction of acetone with HCN takes place in accordance with partial step a) in the presence of a base. In this case, anion exchangers can be used. Preference is given to using hydroxides or oxides which are particularly preferably formed by alkaline earth metals or alkali metals. These include, inter alia, Ca (OH) 2 and Mg (OH) 2 , MgO, CaO, NaOH, KOH, LiOH or Li 2 O. Most preferably, LiOH or Li 2 O is used here. Preferably, the reaction mixture for the reaction of the carbonyl compound with HCN 0.001-10 wt.%, Particularly preferably 0.01-2 wt.% Of hydroxide and / or oxide added. Theoretically, soluble amines can be used to adjust the pH. However, it has been shown that the use of these amines has a detrimental effect on the Life of the catalyst used for the hydrolysis in step b) may have. In addition to organic compounds having a nitrogen atom in the present case also ammonia (NH 3 ) belongs to the amines. Therefore, the proportion of soluble amines in the reaction mixture is preferably at most 0.1% by weight, more preferably at most 0.01% by weight, and most preferably at most 0.001% by weight. In a particular aspect, no substantial proportion of these amines is added to adjust the pH of the reaction mixture. The reaction according to sub-step a) to form ACH can be carried out under reduced or elevated pressure, depending on the reaction temperature. Preference-wise, this reaction is carried out in a pressure range of 0.5-10 bar, more preferably 0.8-3 bar.
Bei kontinuierlichen Verfahren beträgt die Verweilzeit der Umsetzung gemäß Teilschritt a) vorzugsweise 30 s bis 15 h, besonders bevorzugt 10 min bis 5 h und ganz besonders bevorzugt 30 min bis 3 h.The reaction time for the formation of ACH according to step a) depends inter alia on the activity of the catalyst and the reaction temperature, which parameter can be within wide limits. In the case of continuous processes, the residence time of the reaction in substep a) is preferably 30 s to 15 h, more preferably 10 min to 5 h and most preferably 30 min to 3 h.
Vorzugsweise liegt das molare Verhältnis von Oxidationsmittel zu ACH im Bereich von 0,001:1 bis 2:1, besonders bevorzugt 0,01:1 bis 1,5:1.The amount of oxidizing agent used can be in a wide range, with the reactants and products not being oxidized by the oxidizing agent. The reaction according to sub-step c) of the invention takes place in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction can be accelerated, for example, by basic catalysts. These include homogeneous catalysts as well as heterogeneous catalysts.
Of very particular interest in carrying out the process according to the invention are water-resistant lanthanoid compounds as catalysts. The use of this type of homogeneous catalysts in a process of the invention is novel and leads to surprisingly advantageous results. The term "water resistant" means that the catalyst retains its catalytic ability in the presence of water. Accordingly, the reaction according to the invention can be carried out in the presence of up to 2% by weight of water, without the catalytic ability of the catalyst thereby being significantly impaired. In this context, the term "essential" means that the reaction rate and / or the selectivity decreases by at most 50%, based on the reaction without the presence of water.
Lanthanoid compounds denote compounds of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Td, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and / or Lu. Preferably, a lanthanoid compound is used which comprises lanthanum. Preferably, the lanthanide compound has a solubility in water of at least 1 g / l, preferably at least 10 g / l at 25 ° C. Preferred lanthanoid compounds are salts which are preferably present in the oxidation state 3. Particularly preferred water-resistant lanthanoid compounds are La (NO 3 ) 3 and / or LaCl 3 . These compounds can be added as salts of the reaction mixture or formed in situ. Other homogeneous catalysts which can be successfully used in the present invention include alkali metal alcoholates and organometallic compounds of titanium, tin and aluminum. Preference is given to using a titanium alcoholate or tin alkoxide, such as, for example, titanium tetraisopropoxide or tin tetrabutyloxide.
A particular process variant involves using as the catalyst a soluble metal complex containing titanium and / or tin and the alpha-hydroxycarboxamide.
Another specific modification of the process of the invention provides that the catalyst used is a metal trifluoromethanesulfonate. Preference is given to a metal trifluoromethanesulfonate, in which the metal is selected from the group consisting of the elements in the groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the Periodic Table. Of these, preference is given to using those metal trifluoromethanesulfonates in which the metal corresponds to one or more lanthanides.
Among the successfully applicable heterogeneous catalysts include, inter alia, magnesium oxide, calcium oxide and basic ion exchangers and the like. Thus, for example, preference may be given to processes in which the catalyst is an insoluble metal oxide which comprises at least one selected from among Sb, Sc, V, La, Ce, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Tc, Re, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Al, Si, Sn, Pb and Bi. Alternatively, methods may be preferred wherein the catalyst used is an insoluble metal selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, In, Bi and Te.

41.63 g of hydroxybutyramide (HIBA) are introduced into a reactor, 157.42 g of 2-ethylhexanol are metered in and then 1.94 g of lead oxide catalyst are added. The molar ratio of HIBA to 2-ethylhexanol is 1: 3. By means of oil bath, the reaction mixture is heated to 220 ° C with stirring. The reaction is carried out under nitrogen sparging and a pressure of 4 bar. When the reaction temperature of 120 ° C is reached, stirring is continued for about 210 minutes. The introduced nitrogen removes (stripping) the released ammonia from the system. After the reaction, the reaction mixture is cooled and analyzed. The conversion was 100%, with a selectivity of 92.65% of 2-ethylhexyl-hydroxyisobutyrate.
Beispiel 2Example 2
8.16 g of hydroxybutyramide (HIBA) are introduced into a reactor, 25.16 g of 1,3-propanediol are metered in, and then the lead oxide catalyst is added.
