Description
GEBIET DER ERFINDUNGFIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a sintered cemented carbide composition, and more particularly, to a sintered cemented carbide composition using a cobalt-molybdenum alloy as a binder.
HINTERGRUNDBACKGROUND
Cutting tools comprising cemented carbide bodies are used in both coated and uncoated condition in a variety of applications, including earth boring and mining, as well as in the machining of various metals and alloys. Increasing the resistance of the cutting tools to wear and other failure modes, including breakage and chipping, remains an area of intense research and development. For this purpose, significant resources have been allocated to the development of wear resistant refractory coatings for cutting tools. For example, TiC, TiCN, TiOCN, TiN and Al 2 O 3 have been deposited on cemented carbides by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD).
In addition, properties of the underlying sintered cemented carbide substrate were investigated. Cutting tool manufacturers have studied changes in the composition of cemented carbide bodies and the resulting effects on hard metal properties, including, but not limited to, hardness, wear resistance, fracture toughness, density and various magnetic properties. However, improvement of one property of the cemented carbide often results in concomitant deterioration of another property of the cemented carbide. For example, increasing the wear resistance of a cemented carbide body may result in reduced fracture toughness of the body. Nevertheless, improvements in cemented carbide substrates are needed to meet the evolving requirements of earth boring and metalworking applications, and careful consideration of competing properties is required as changes in the composition of cemented carbide bodies are made in efforts to provide improved performance cutting tools.

Sintered cemented carbide compositions and related tools can be made by powder metallurgy processes. For example, one method of making a sintered cemented carbide cutting tool includes providing a sintering powder composition that includes a powdered metallic binder component and a tungsten carbide-containing cemented carbide component. From the sintered powder composition, a green compact is molded, and the green compact is sintered to produce the sintered hard metal tool.
The sintered powder composition is produced in some embodiments by mixing tungsten carbide particles and the powdered metallic binder. The amount of metallic binder used in the sintered powder composition may be selected from Table I herein. In some embodiments, molybdenum carbide powder (Mo 2 C) is combined with cobalt powder to produce the powdered metallic binder. Mo 2 C may be added to cobalt powder in an amount corresponding to providing a molybdenum content in the metallic binder selected from Table II. For example, Mo 2 C may be present in an amount of from 1 to 15 percent by weight of the powdered metallic binder. As described herein, one or more noble metals may also be part of the metallic binder. In such embodiments, noble metal powder may be added to the cobalt powder and Mo 2 C powder.
The resulting tungsten carbide particles and powdered metallic binder mixture may be ground in a ball mill or an attritor. Milling the mixture may cause tungsten carbide particles to be coated with powdered metallic binder. The sintered powder is formed into a green compact in preparation for sintering. Any solidification method can be used which is not inconsistent with the objects of the present invention. For example, the sintered powder may be formed into a green body, extruded or pressed. In several concrete embodiments, the sintered powder can be pressed cold isostatically or in a powder compacting press. The green compact may take the form of a blank or near-net shape of the desired cutting element, including a cutting insert, a drill or an end mill. In some embodiments, the green compact is mechanically processed to produce the desired shape.
The green compact is then sintered to produce the sintered cemented carbide cutters. The green compact may be vacuum sintered or sintered under an argon or hydrogen / methane atmosphere. In vacuum sintering, the green compact is placed in a vacuum oven and sintered at a temperature of 1320 ° C to 1500 ° C. In some embodiments, the vacuum sintering process is supplemented by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The hot isostatic pressing may be performed as a process subsequent to sintering or during vacuum sintering, resulting in a sintering HIP process. The resulting sintered cemented carbide has the above-described wear resistance and fracture toughness values, including the values provided in Table III. Unlike several previous methods, carbon addition is not required to control the carbon potential during the sintering process.
During sintering or sintering HIP operation of the sintered powder composition, molybdenum is released from the carbide and forms a cubic mixed crystal phase with the cobalt. The formation of the cubic Co-Mo mixed crystal phase can lower Mo 2 C to sufficiently low levels that Mo 2 C is not detected in an XRD of the sintered cemented carbide composition. In some embodiments, Mo 2 C is not present in the sintered cemented carbide composition. Precious metal present in the sintering powder also forms one or more mixed crystal phases with cobalt. The cobalt-noble metal mixed crystal phase may have a hexagonal crystal structure.
These and other embodiments are further illustrated by the following non-limiting examples.
Beispiel 1 – Gesinterte HartmetallzusammensetzungenExample 1 - Sintered cemented carbide compositions
