Description
The invention relates to a method for heat treating a component consisting of a metal alloy, in particular a light metal material, in or on which at least one surface section is coated with a glaze or enamel coating.
As detailed in the article "Possibilities and Limitations of Enameling of Light Metals" by Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Kühn, published in Surfaces Polysurfaces No. 2/09, pages 6-9, enamel coatings are glass layers that have been adapted to their intended base materials, especially in terms of melting temperature and thermal expansion coefficients. They combine the properties of a glass surface with the material and processing properties of metals. In contrast to other coatings, the bonding of the respective enamel coating combines a glass-metal composite, in which intermediate layers, so-called intermetallic phases, form between the glass material and the metal substrate. These ensure a particularly intense adhesion of the coating on the metal. For this purpose, today's enamels are multicomponent mixtures that achieve very good mechanical hardness and chemical resistance using their eutectic at low stoving temperatures.

The mechanical properties of castings produced from light metal materials, in particular aluminum alloys, can be adjusted in a targeted manner by means of a suitable heat treatment. Thus, by a solution annealing with subsequent quenching, in which the component is cooled at a high speed to a low target temperature, for example the room temperature, the strength of the component can be significantly increased. It has proved to be particularly economical when the baking and the heating to the quenching temperature, from which the quenching takes place, are carried out in one go.
Practical experiments have shown, however, that it can lead to flaking of the glaze or enamel coating when quenching takes place after heating to a temperature above the usual baking temperature of the glaze or enamel coating with very high cooling rates, as for example occur in a water quench. However, having a deterrent with Such high cooling rates, especially for components that are exposed to high mechanical loads in use, such as cylinder heads of internal combustion engines, are applied regularly. At the same time these components are the typical application examples of components that are coated in thermally highly stressed areas with a glaze or enamel coating of the type in question here.
Against this background, the task has emerged to name a method with which it is possible to heat treat existing metal components, in particular light metal materials, and provided at least on a surface portion with a glaze or enamel coating components so that on the one hand maximum strength of Part achieved and on the other hand, a chipping of the glaze or enamel coating is reliably avoided.
The invention has achieved this object by the method specified in claim 1.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims and are explained below as the general inventive concept in detail.
In the method according to the invention for heat-treating a component consisting of a metal material, in particular a light metal material, in or on which at least one surface section is coated with a glaze or enamel coating, the respective component, in accordance with the prior art explained in the introduction, is applied to a Heating temperature which is at least equal to a minimum quenching temperature. Thereafter, the component is quenched from a temperature which in turn is at least equal to the minimum quench temperature to produce a higher strength microstructure in the component.
The heating temperature to which the component is heated prior to quenching is dimensioned such that the temperature of the component at the beginning of the quenching process is at least equal to the minimum quenching temperature, taking into account possible temperature losses that occur by transporting the component or other intermediary working steps ,
According to the invention, in such a method, the glaze or enamel coating is pre-cooled before quenching at least on its free surface to a pre-cooling temperature which corresponds at most to the temperature at which the softening of the glaze or enamel coating begins.
The cooling rate at which the glaze or enamel coating is pre-cooled according to the invention is lower than the cooling rate achieved during quenching.
Thus, by pre-cooling provided by the invention, the glaze or enamel coating is preheated sufficiently slowly, prior to quenching, to a temperature lower than the component temperature, typically lower than the minimum quench temperature, and the glaze or enamel coating solidified again. The target temperature of the precooling is in the context of the invention generally the temperature above which there is a softening of the glass matrix and the initially described chemical processes, due to which the glaze or enamel coating permanently adheres firmly to the metal material of the component. In the course of pre-cooling, the coating is cooled at least in its region of its free surface to a temperature below this target temperature.
The method according to the invention proves to be particularly suitable for the heat treatment of components which consist of a light metal material, in particular an aluminum-based material.
With the method according to the invention, it is possible to produce heavy-duty components in which the glaze or enamel coating is completely retained in the course of deterrence. Components with a glaze or enamel coating of part areas can be heat treated with quenching without sacrificing the solution annealing temperature, even if the coating only allows significantly lower temperatures to be error free. The maximum achievable mechanical properties of a casting material can thus be fully exploited.
After the glaze or enamel coating has been softened as a result of the heating to the at least the minimum quenching temperature and thus above the baking temperature set typically when baking the glaze or enamel coating baking temperature, it solidifies at least by the pre-cooling according to the invention time again, that it firmly adheres to the metal substrate of the component and so can withstand the rapid change in temperature during the subsequent quenching of the entire component without causing flaking.
Since the pre-cooling of the glaze or enamel coating is carried out after the heating of the component to the heating temperature, it may happen that the component during the pre-cooling also cools to some extent. In this case, therefore, the minimum quenching temperature at which the quenching of the component begins is lower than the originally achieved heating temperature or the heating temperature is set so high that the component temperature still remains above the minimum quenching temperature after the temperature decrease occurring in the course of precooling lies.
The pre-cooling temperature to which the glaze or enamel coating is precooled may typically be at least 30 ° C, more preferably at least 50 ° C lower than the minimum quench temperature.
In the case of components made of an aluminum material, suitable stoving temperatures and thus the temperatures at which softening of the glass matrix of the glaze or enamel coating commences are typically in the range of 480-650 ° C., in particular 510-540 ° C. It is therefore particularly safe to prevent the glaze or enamel coating from flaking off in the case of components made of Al materials in that the pre-cooling temperature is at most 480 ° C., in particular at most 470 ° C. or 450 ° C. By contrast, typical minimum quenching temperatures for components consisting of Al materials are at least 480 ° C., in particular at least 500 ° C., with quenching temperatures of at least 520 ° C., in particular at least 530 ° C., having proved to be particularly advantageous in practice.
The precooling of the glaze or enamel coating to the pre-cooling temperature can be effected according to the invention by flowing the glaze or enamel coating by means of a fluid. In particular, a suitably tempered gas stream is suitable for this purpose. Compressed air has proved to be particularly advantageous as a cooling gas, since it is readily available in the operating environment in which the inventive method is used and the compressed air flow can be easily adjusted so that it causes the required cooling. Of course, however, other gases, such as an inert gas, such as nitrogen or the like, may also be used when available or indicated, for example, to avoid reactions of the metal substrate with the incoming gas. The respective gas stream can be directed by means of a nozzle device against the glaze or enamel coating in order to ensure a concentrated on each of the coated with the glaze or enamel coating surface section cooling.
Physically results from layer thickness and the thermophysical data, a propagation velocity of the temperature caused by the cooling medium temperature wave whose progression is determined by the so-called thermal conductivity or thermal diffusivity of the glaze or enamel coating. The metal substrate of the component is not affected as long as the heat wave does not penetrate the casting surface due to the precooling. In the case of the usual layer thicknesses of glaze or enamel coatings of the type in question, cooling times of not more than 60 seconds, in particular no more than 40 seconds, are generally sufficient for this. A cooling below the required minimum quenching temperature at conventional coating thicknesses can be prevented particularly reliably by limiting the duration of the pre-cooling to a maximum of 20 seconds, in particular 5-20 seconds.
Typische Schichtdicken der Glasur- oder Emaille-Beschichtung liegen im Bereich von bis zu 5 mm, insbesondere bis zu 2 mm.Typical layer thicknesses of the glaze or enamel coating are in the range of up to 5 mm, in particular up to 2 mm.
The duration of precooling of the glaze or enamel coating which is actually required in each case can be determined in a manner which is familiar to the person skilled in the art by experimental measurements on specimens of the components to be heat-treated. For this purpose, on the one hand, the temperature decrease of the glaze or enamel coating occurring during precooling and, on the other hand, the temperature profile in the region of the boundary layer between the glaze or enamel coating and the metal material of the component bearing it are detected by measurement or determined theoretically. Optimally, the duration of the pre-cooling is set so that the temperature of the light metal material of the component at the surface portion coated with the glaze or enamel coating is at least equal to the minimum quench temperature.
In principle, it will be assumed that it is sufficient for the purposes according to the invention if the glaze or enamel coating only that of its free surface is cooled to the pre-cooling temperature, so that in the adjacent to the metal substrate area of the glaze or enamel coating still a higher, adjacent to the minimum quenching temperature is present. Nice Pre-cooling, which is restricted to the free surface of the coating and thus to the layers of the glaze or enamel coating close to this surface, prevents the glaze or enamel coating from being torn during subsequent quenching. Since the coating has already cooled on its surface at the same time, the unit formed from component and layer base is under compressive stress, which additionally increases their resistance.
Practical cooling rates of the pre-cooling are in the range of less than 5 K / s, wherein at cooling rates of at least 0.5 K / s, the pre-cooling can be done so fast that during the pre-cooling of the glaze or enamel coating not too great cooling of the rest Component occurs.
The heat treatment carried out according to the invention can usually be carried out as solution annealing with subsequent quenching. If the components are cast components made of light metal materials, in particular Al materials, the typical annealing times are 0.5-5 h.
The quenching of the component can then take place with cooling rates of at least 5 K / s, in particular at least 7 K / s or at least 10 K / s. In practice, cooling rates of up to 50 K / s have proven successful, with the concrete cooling rates achieved in the case of components with strongly changing wall thicknesses and local material accumulations being able to scatter strongly over the component volume.
The quenching of the components themselves can be carried out in a conventional manner after the pre-cooling of the glaze or enamel coating according to the invention. As a quenching medium here is particularly water. However, if desired, other quenching media may be used, such as spray, polymers, oils or gases.
By way of the temperature of the quenching medium, the respectively achieved cooling rate can be set in the same known manner. If water is used as the quenching medium, then, for example, the water temperature can reach up to the boiling point in order to avoid excessively high cooling rates in the component.
As already mentioned, the method according to the invention is particularly suitable for the heat treatment of components for internal combustion engines in which at least one channel is provided on which at least one surface section is coated with the glaze or enamel coating.
To prevent the sections of the component adjacent to the section covered with the glaze or enamel coating from overcooling during pre-cooling, they can be shielded by attaching covers, insulating materials and the like against the respective cooling medium.
After quenching, the heat-treated components according to the invention can, in a manner known per se, pass through further treatment steps, such as aging, in order to further optimize their properties with regard to the respective use.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to a drawing illustrating an exemplary embodiment.
