Abstract
Methods and systems for controlling an electric steering system are described. The electric steering system may be a power steering system or a steer-by-wire system. The electric steering system provides assistive steering torque boost in response to a boost curve, wherein the boost curve defines a relationship between at least one input parameter and the current assist steering torque gain provided by the electric steering system. The electric steering system has at least two boost curves, and the electric steering system switches from using at least two boost curves to the use of a second boost curve in response to one or more predefined conditions from the use of a first boost curve two boost curves around. As a result, for example, a driver can more easily perform an emergency maneuver and perceive a better support by the steering system of the vehicle, because the support of the second boost curve can be greater than the support by the first boost curve.

The invention relates to a system, a method and a computer program for steering a vehicle. In particular, the invention relates to a system, method and computer program for steering a vehicle equipped with electric steering such as power steering or steer-by-wire steering.
Hintergrundbackground
Today, various types of electric steering systems are becoming increasingly common in vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, buses, and other motor vehicles. The steering systems may be, for example, a power steering system acting as a single servo device or a power steering system supplemented by a hydraulic power steering system. Combinations of power steering systems and hydraulic power steering systems are typically more common in heavier vehicles such as trucks and buses. In addition, so-called steer-by-wire systems are now being introduced in some vehicles. In a steer-by-wire system, there are no direct mechanical connections between the steering wheel and the wheels. The directional control of the wheels is instead performed by one or more electric motors, which are controlled by electronic control units that detect the steering wheel input from the driver.

There is a constant desire to improve the steering in motor vehicles. This also applies to motor vehicles that are equipped with an electric steering system, such as a power steering system or a steer-by-wire system. Therefore, there is a need for an improved electric steering system for motor vehicles. At the same time, it is advantageous if the electric steering system behaves in a predictable manner, which the driver perceives as safe and pleasant.
KurzdarstellungSummary
It is an object of the invention to provide improved steering of a vehicle.
This object and other objects can be achieved at least in part by the electric steering system, method and computer program product as set forth in the appended claims.
The inventor has recognized that in some situations there is a need for a high increase in assist torque from the electric steering system. For example, during an evasive maneuver, it may be advantageous to suddenly provide a significantly increased assist torque. At the same time, the assist moment should preferably not be stepped, which could be interpreted by the driver as a loss of vehicle control in that the steering of the vehicle is perceived as unpredictable. In summary, it would be desirable to apply a much higher momentum in some situations. At the same time, it would also be advantageous to maintain a perception of the driver that the additional torque is not applied in a single step.
By using at least two different boost curves, one of the boost curves respectively determining the applied assist torque, and by switching between the various boost curves based on a predetermined threshold of one or more parameters, a fast transition to a state, in which a high support torque is applied can be achieved. By using at least two different boost curves, such that one determines the current assist torque for the driver, the electric steering system may be caused to change from a first boost curve giving a relatively small additional torque to another, second boost Curve which gives a higher torque at the same input parameter value in response to a predetermined event taking place. By using at least two different boost curves, the electric steering system can switch to a boost curve that gives a higher assist torque when it is determined that a particular condition exists. For example, if it is determined based on one or more input parameters that the driver is driving an evasive maneuver, the electric steering system may switch to another boost curve that provides a higher assist torque for the same set of input parameter values. So that the driver perceives no step change in the applied additional torque from the electric steering system, the transition from one boost curve to another boost curve can take place in a short transition period. Advantageously, in the short transition period, the electric steering system may be configured to interpolate, at the current set of input parameter values, between the assist moment associated with the first boost curve and the assist moment associated with the second boost curve.
According to one embodiment, a method of controlling an electric steering system is provided. This allows a driver to more easily make an emergency maneuver and perceive better assistance from the steering system of the vehicle because the assistance from the second boost curve may be higher than the support from the first boost curve.
In one embodiment, the predefined condition is one or more thresholds. The threshold (s) may represent a value based on one or more of the following parameters: steering torque, vehicle speed, steering angle, steering angle derivative, steering torque derivative, ESP sensor value, ABS sensor value, and ASR sensor value ,
In one embodiment, the transition from a first boost curve to a second boost curve occurs in a transient period, and in the transient period, the assist steering torque is a steering torque that results from interpolating the values of the first and second boost curves. This avoids that the driver perceives a step-like change in the applied support torque.
In one embodiment, upon detecting that the at least one or more conditions are met, the electric steering system switches to the second boost curve in less than 50 ms.
In one embodiment, the electric steering system returns to the first boost curve in response to one or more predefined conditions from the second boost curve.

As stated above, the assistive steering torque provided by the electric steering system may follow a boost curve. The boost curve represents a relationship between one or more input parameters and the current assisting steering torque gain by the electric steering system. According to some embodiments, the electric steering system has at least two boost curves and is configured to switch from one boost curve to another when a particular condition is detected. For example, in an emergency situation, when a driver needs to make rapid changes in direction, a normal boost curve may provide too little steering torque gain and the driver may perceive that the vehicle is difficult to maneuver. By recognizing the emergency situation and switching to another boost curve providing a higher steering torque gain, the driver can more easily drive the emergency maneuver and perceive better assistance from the steering system of the vehicle. Other situations in which a high moment may be required are, for example, parking or similar actions. Such other situations can also be detected.
