Description
Increasing requirements regarding the permissible contents of components of combustion gases (exhaust gases) which are considered to endanger or even harm the environment and / or health, and the efficiency in the operation of power plants, combustion plants, waste incinerators, gas turbines and engines of all kinds Among other things, it can be countered by determining and evaluating the composition of gases in the respective plants during ongoing operation and deriving measures for improved operation. This results in a need for sensors for determining ingredients of a gas (gas mixture).
In the efforts to reduce undesirable components in the exhaust gases of motor vehicles, the group of nitrogen oxides, called NO x for short, is increasingly coming to the fore after sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
To reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions in combustion processes, various systems are used, for example selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by means of injection of an aqueous urea solution and the NO x storage catalyst (Lean NO x trap, abbreviated LNT).
According to the current state of the art, future emission standards (as of Sept. 2014: EURO 6) can only be adhered to in vehicles with internal combustion engines with the help of the systems mentioned, which means a significant reduction in NO x emissions, especially in diesel vehicles. While according to EURO 5 diesel vehicles may still emit 180 mg NO x per kilometer, this limit will be lowered to 80 mg per kilometer with the introduction of EURO 6.
To monitor and control the operation of said systems and reduce operating costs, continuous monitoring of NO x concentration in the exhaust of the vehicle by means of one or more reliable NO x sensors is required. If it is determined with the help of the NO x sensor / NO x sensors that the nitrogen oxide content increases sharply, this is an indication that the absorption capacity of the storage catalytic converter is exhausted and this must be regenerated or the SCR system using urea Dosage does not work exactly.
Especially in automotive applications, it is prescribed in certain countries that the functionality of the exhaust aftertreatment system be diagnosed in the vehicle itself. The car manufacturer must ensure that a randomly selected vehicle still complies with emission regulations even after a long period of use. Especially for diesel vehicles, the monitoring of NO x storage catalytic converters and SCR catalysts to reduce NO x emissions is a task that is being worked on intensively.
- – Blockheizkraftwerken,
- – Feuerungsanlagen und Müllverbrennungsanlagen, und
- – Industrieanlagen
- - power plants (coal-fired boilers or gas turbines),
- - combined heat and power plants,
- - combustion plants and waste incineration plants, and
- - industrial plants
In addition, nitrogen oxides can also occur as process gases in chemical plants. Again, the detection of nitrogen oxides may be of interest.
Due to the fact that NO 2 (nitrogen dioxide) as an emitter is significantly more harmful to the climate than NO (nitrogen monoxide), NO 2 will presumably be limited by law as an independent component in the exhaust gas. This poses a major problem for sensor development, as all sensors currently on the market can only measure a total nitrogen oxide content. For example, in the case of sensors with a two-chamber design in the first chamber, the oxygen present is removed and, at the same time, the NO 2 present is reduced to NO. The exhaust gas flowing into the second chamber thus contains only NO as nitrogen oxide component, which is electrochemically decomposed there to platinum electrodes and can be measured as an electric current.

Against this background, it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel operating method for a gas sensor, which is suitable as a basis for a detection of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and / or nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in a gas mixture.
This object is achieved by the method of operation with the features of

- Providing a gas sensor comprising an oxygen ion conductor and at least two electrodes arranged on the oxygen ion conductor,
- Bringing the two electrodes of the gas sensor into contact with the gas mixture to be analyzed,
- - Performing a first polarization of the electrodes of the gas sensor over a predetermined time t polarization_0 with a predetermined electric voltage U polarization_0 , a predetermined electrical voltage curve, a predetermined electric current I polarization_0 or a predetermined electrical current profile and performing an adjoining first depolarization without one of the Electrodes applied electrical voltage / current over a predefinable period of time t discharge_0,
- - Performing at least a second polarization of the electrodes of the gas sensor over a predetermined time t polarization_n with a predetermined voltage U polarization_n , a predetermined electrical voltage waveform, a predetermined electric current I polarization_n or a predetermined electric current and performing an adjoining second depolarization without a electrical voltage / current applied to the electrodes over a predefinable time t discharge_n , wherein the first polarization depolarization phase and the second and further optional polarization depolarization phases differ from each other in at least one of the following parameters: magnitude the polarization amplitude of the electric voltage U polarization ; Magnitude of the polarization amplitude of the electric current I polarization ; time course of the electrical voltage U polarization (t) during polarization; time course of the electric current I polarization (t) during the polarization; Polarization time t polarization ; Depolarization time t discharge ; Depolarisation voltage, which is specified as a termination criterion of the depolarization.
According to a first advantageous development of the operating method, two identically configured gas sensors are provided instead of a gas sensor, each comprising an oxygen ion conductor and at least two arranged on the oxygen ion conductor electrodes and is the first polarization depolarization phase with the first of the gas sensors and the second polarization depolarization Phase performed with the second of the two gas sensors.
Due to the use of asymmetric polarization parameters, different sensor signals and sensitivities to NO and NO 2 result . Based on this, both the content of NO and the content of NO 2 can be determined in a simple and robust manner with the aid of only one gas sensor.
When using only one gas sensor results in the use of multiple sensors for the separate measurement of the gas components a significant cost reduction. And in applications with a very limited space, for example, in the exhaust gas monitoring in the motor vehicle, the reduction of the number of sensors is a factor of paramount importance. In particular, in motor vehicles, the introduction of additional sensors for design reasons is often not feasible due to the very limited space.
When two gas sensors are used, simple, robust and cost-effective gas sensors can be used, which are designed in such a way that all electrodes are in contact with the exhaust gas to be measured during their operation.

At very low concentrations in the ppm range, nitrogen oxides lead to a significantly accelerated discharge of the sensor after polarization, so that they can be detected well.
As was experimentally determined by measurements on planar sensors with bilateral sensor electrodes on a substrate consisting of yttrium-doped zirconium dioxide and an addition of Al 2 O 3 , both the discharge voltage and the sensor signal to nitrogen oxides (eg., The voltage difference .DELTA.U t * after a certain Depolarization time t * between base gas (for example, a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor) and the respective NO concentration) strongly influenced by the respective polarization parameters such as the polarization amplitude and the polarization time t 0 .

Based on these measurement results, a gas sensor for discriminating or separately detecting NO and NO 2 can be obtained according to the invention using asymmetric polarization parameters, since different sensor signals and sensitivities to NO and NO 2 result.
However, as the inventors have found, by modification of the prior art, this can be done Voltage-pulse method, a significant improvement in the sensitivity and the selectivity, ie the distinctness of various gas components, can be achieved by gas sensors.
In its simplest embodiment, in the method of operation according to the present invention, at least two polarization depolarization phases are performed with a gas sensor as described above, the two polarization depolarization phases differing in at least one of the following parameters: magnitude the polarization amplitude of the electric voltage U polarization ; Magnitude of the polarization amplitude of the electric current I polarization ; time course of the electrical voltage U polarization (t) during polarization; time course of the electric current I polarization (t) during the polarization; Polarization time t polarization ; Depolarization time t discharge ; Depolarisation voltage, which is specified as a termination criterion of the depolarization.
However, the variant shown represents only one possibility of an asymmetry of the operating method. Thus, the asymmetry can take place only after an arbitrary number of identical polarization and depolarization sequences. Similarly, the polarity of the voltage pulses may be changed after each sequence or after any number of sequences. The polarization parameters can therefore be changed during operation in any number of variants. It is only important that differ due to at least one different parameter, the sensitivities to NO and NO 2 and / or the possibility exists to be able to detect at least one additional gas component and thus to expand the functionality of the gas sensor.
In this case, the sensor signal is dependent on the respective gas concentrations, often resulting in linear (U t * = A * C NO + B * C NO 2 ) or semilogarithmic dependencies (U t * = A * ln (C NO ) + B * ln (C NO2 )), where the coefficients (A, B) represent the sensitivities to the concentrations C NO and C NO2 . In addition, an interaction term of both concentrations may occur, ie an additional dependence on the product of the two concentrations (U t * = E * C NO * C NO 2 ).
With the aid of a corresponding calibration, at known concentrations C NO and C NO 2, the respective coefficients A, B, C and D, which represent sensitivities to the concentrations C NO and C NO 2 and which all have different values, can be determined. Thus, then the respective gas concentrations of both NOx components can be determined based on the sensor signals when using at least one different parameter in the polarization depolarization phases.
As already mentioned above, the voltage-pulse method is characterized in that after a defined polarization by means of a voltage or a current (which may / may also be variable in time) follows a Depolarisationsphase.
This sequence of polarization and depolarization is repeated at least once (n ≥ 1), with at least one parameter of the first Polarization depolarization phase in the second polarization depolarization phase is changed.
In the voltage-pulse method (= polarization depolarization method) according to the present invention as sensor signals the course / the courses and / or the size of the polarization current / the polarization currents, the course / the courses of the depolarization voltage (s) and / or the magnitude of the depolarization voltage (s) can be detected after a presettable period of time t * in the region of the depolarization period of at least one first and one second polarization depolarization phase.
In addition to the possibility of operating a single gas sensor with the operating method according to the present invention, two or more identical gas sensors with different polarization parameters can also be operated so that different sensitivities to NO and NO 2 are obtained on the basis of at least two identically constructed gas sensors.
- a) a comparison of the detected sensor signals with values of a lookup table created in a previous calibration procedure and / or
- b) using a multivariate analysis method.
The corresponding methods are known to experts, so that they need not be discussed in more detail here.
The operating method according to the present invention makes use of one or more gas sensors whose electrodes are in operation in the gas mixture to be analyzed. Therefore, the operating method can make use of inexpensive, robust and simple gas sensors, which can be produced, for example, in planar technology.
Due to asymmetrical parameters when using the voltage-pulse method (based on a cyclic polarization and a subsequent discharge of the electrodes), for example, different sensitivities with respect to the components NO and NO 2 result , so that they can be distinguished from one another. In comparison to the known state of the art, the financial outlay remains virtually unchanged since only the software of the voltage-pulse method has to be adapted accordingly.
- - Substantial cost reduction through simplified manufacturing process
- - Saving of expensive raw materials
- - High miniaturization potential
- - Saving of heating power due to the reduced sensor size to be heated
