The inventive method for operating the aforementioned fuel cell is characterized in that as the reducing agent on the anode side, an alkali or alkaline earth metal is supplied and is supplied as the oxidizing agent on the cathode side of a metallic sulfide or disulfide. The supplied operating means are advantageously themselves electrically conductive and can thus at the same time assume the function of the electrodes in the fuel cell, provided they are electrically contacted, for example via an adjacently arranged current collector. An additional catalyst is not necessary. The electrolyte used is advantageously a nonaqueous solvent and optionally a conductive salt.
Description
The invention relates to a new fuel cell design, in particular for a fuel cell with a high energy density.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
A fuel cell is a galvanic cell that converts the chemical reaction energy of a continuously supplied reductant and an oxidant into electrical energy.
A fuel cell usually consists of at least two electrodes, which are interconnected by an electrolyte (ion conductor), which is not electrically conductive. The electrode plates / bipolar plates usually consist of metal or carbon compounds. The electrodes are usually provided with a catalyst, for example with platinum or with palladium, which lower the corresponding activation energies at the electrodes. Examples of suitable electrolytes are bases or acids, alkali metal carbonate melts, ceramics or membranes.
As resources often gases or liquids are used, such as hydrogen, methane, formic acid or alcohols as fuel on the anode side and air or pure oxygen as the oxidant at the cathode.
In contrast to a battery or a rechargeable battery, a fuel cell is not an energy store but a converter. The energy for power production is supplied in chemically bound form with the fuels. A fuel cell is a continuous flow reactor that can theoretically produce electricity continuously with continuously supplied equipment. The known from the literature metal / air cells, eg. B. Al / air cells, Mg / air cells or Zn / air cells, in contrast, a hybrid form. On the one hand, they have a metal permanently connected to the anode, as in a battery, but are operated continuously on the cathode side with air as the oxidant, as in a fuel cell.
Aufgabe und LösungTask and solution
The object of the invention is to provide a new design for a fuel cell, which has a high energy density compared to the fuel cells known from the prior art and low costs. Another object of the invention is to disclose a method of operating such a fuel cell.
The objects of the invention are achieved by a fuel cell having the features of the main claim, as well as by a method having the features of the independent claim. Advantageous embodiments of the fuel cell and the method can be found in the respective back claims.
Gegenstand der ErfindungSubject of the invention
In the context of the invention, a new fuel cell has been developed in which alkali metal or alkaline earth metals are used as the reducing agent and a metal sulfide or metal disulfide as the oxidizing agent. The electrochemical reaction of the alkali or alkaline earth metals and the metal sulfide or metal disulfide to alkali metal sulfide or alkaline earth metal sulfide and the metal of the metal sulfide or metal disulfide occurs under power generation.
The supplied operating means are advantageously themselves electrically conductive and can thus at the same time assume the function of the electrodes in the fuel cell, provided they are electrically contacted, for example via an adjacently arranged current collector. If no passive layers, eg. B. occur by oxides, at the same time the activity losses of the reduction of the metal disulfide and oxidation reaction of the alkali or alkaline earth metals are low. Comparable with a LiFeS battery, no additional catalyst is needed even in the fuel cell according to the invention.
The electrochemical reactions and the ion transport take place in a non-aqueous electrolyte, such as propylene carbonate. The product of the conversion process is an alkali metal sulfide or an alkaline earth metal disulfide.
The structure of the fuel cell according to the invention can be described as follows.
As the anode material or as fuel is an alkali or alkaline earth metal. Lithium, sodium and potassium are particularly suitable as alkali metals and beryllium, magnesium, calcium and strontium as alkaline earth metals.
For the cathode or as an oxidizing agent, in particular a metal sulfide or a metal disulfide can be used. As metal, any metal can be used which, according to the voltage series, is more noble than the metal used on the anode side, forms a sulfide or disulfide with sulfur, and is designed to conduct electrons.
Geeignete metallische Sulfide bzw. Disulfide sind beispielsweise Galenit oder Bleiglanz (PbS), Bornit (Buntkupferkies oder Kupfer-Lazur) (Cu5FeS4), Covellin (Kupfer(II)-sulfid) (CuS), Chalkopyrit (Chalcopyrit oder Kupferkies) (CuFeS2), Pyrit (Katzengold oder Narrengold) (FeS2), Eisensulfid (FeS), Realgar oder Rauschrot (AsS), Stibnit (Antimonglanz oder Grauspießglanz) (Sb2S3) oder auch Sphalerit oder Zinkblende (ZnS).In the cathode or the oxidizing agent, the sulfur is present as sulfide ion (S 2- ). Suitable metallic sulfides or disulfides are, for example, galena or galena (PbS), bornite (colored copper or copper-lazur) (Cu 5 FeS 4 ), covellite (copper (II) sulfide) (CuS), chalcopyrite (chalcopyrite or chalcopyrite) ( CuFeS 2 ), pyrite (cat's gold or fool's gold) (FeS 2 ), iron sulfide (FeS), realgar or noise red (AsS), stibnite (antimony or gray pebble) (Sb 2 S 3 ) or sphalerite or zinc blende (ZnS).
The abovementioned sulfides or disulfides need not necessarily be present in the abovementioned stoichiometry, but may also be present in deviating stoichiometry, for example FeSx where 0 <x <2.
The electrolyte used is a nonaqueous liquid, in particular an organic solvent. As a suitable solvent, for example, propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate can be used.
In order to separate the anodic and cathodic areas, a mechanically stable separating element (or a membrane) is provided inside the electrolyte. This separator prevents the direct contact between the anode and the cathode material, or the reducing agent and the oxidizing agent to avoid short circuits. The separator must be permeable to the cations that are produced at the anode. For example, this separator can be so porous that the electrolyte can produce ionic conductivity between the anode and cathode. The separating element advantageously has an electrically non-conductive material which is chemically and mechanically stable. As suitable materials for the separator z. As ceramics or glass.
On the other hand, a polymer may also be used as the membrane. The polymer may serve as a matrix (or mechanical structure) provided with a liquid electrolyte.
In a further embodiment of the invention, an ion exchange membrane can also be used as a mechanically stable separating element in which the polymer itself serves as electrolyte. Furthermore, mixed forms of ion exchange membranes are conceivable, which are saturated with the electrolyte. For example, Nafion ® could be impregnated as an ion exchange membrane with a liquid solvent such as propylene carbonate.
When using a liquid electrolyte, a conductive salt must be dissolved in it. The conducting salt takes over the charge transport of the alkali or alkaline earth metal cations from the cathode to the anode. This can be used in particular as a cation of the conductive salt of that metal, which is also used as an anode or as a fuel. The anion of the conductive salt should be selected so that the greatest possible solubility of the salt in the electrolyte can be realized. Furthermore, the anion of the conductive salt should not be oxidized or reduced during operation of the fuel cell itself. Perchlorate, hexafluorophosphate or tetrafluoroborate, for example, may be mentioned as a suitable anion for the conducting salt dissolved in an organic electrolyte.
The suitable concentration of the conductive salt can easily be determined by a person skilled in the art. On the one hand, the salt is only soluble to a certain degree, which thus already provides a limitation to the top. Advantageously, the solubility should be adjusted so that a maximum conductivity can be realized. As the concentration of the conducting salt increases, so does the charge carrier density and thus also the conductivity. However, at high concentration, the Coulomb interactions may also adversely lead to a reduction in conductivity.
As a suitable concentration for the use of NaClO 4 in propylene carbonate, for example, about 2 mol / L may be mentioned, which corresponds approximately to the solubility of the salt in this solvent.
As current collectors for dissipating the current generated by the fuel cell, a more noble metal should be used at the cathode than the cathodic reactant. For example, copper plates can be used for this purpose.
Large surfaces at the cathode and the anode usually lead to an increase in performance of the fuel cell. Therefore, in the present fuel cell of the present invention in which the resources (reactants) simultaneously perform the functions of the electrodes, they can be advantageously supplied with a large surface area to mass ratio. This means, for example, that the alkali or alkaline earth metal can preferably be added in the form of smaller particles to powders to the fuel cell, provided that the resources are solid under the operating conditions.
If the operating means are used in the form of a powder or smaller particles, they can be mechanically pressed, for example, by pressure to the current collectors corresponding in this case, so as to ensure the electrical contact between the operating medium and the current collector. The pressure can be established, for example, by controlling the supply of the operating medium into the electrode chambers and the discharge on the cathode side and optionally also on the anode side out of the electrode chambers via valves.
The two operating means can be supplied to the fuel cell according to the invention both in the flow, that is to feed into the electrode space and discharge from the electrode space, as well as dead-end version, in which no discharge from the electrode space is provided.
Reaktionsprodukt vorzusehen.Since, in particular, the anodic operating medium at least predominantly dissolves itself during fuel cell operation, a passage device on the anode side is therefore not absolutely necessary. However, should the resources not be completely implemented by the electrochemical reactions, it may be advantageous to provide for the fuel cell on the anode and the cathode side a discharge for the respective equipment or reaction product.
In der erfindungsgemäßen Brennstoffzelle laufen die nachfolgend aufgeführten elektrochemischen Reaktionen ab.In the fuel cell according to the invention, the electrochemical reactions listed below take place.
The energy densities of such cells surpass those of currently commercial accumulators, as shown in the table below. For mobile applications, a vehicle can be "fueled" directly with the resources, without the need for a lengthy charging time as with accumulators.
The operating temperatures of the fuel cells according to the invention are limited only by the melting and boiling points of the cell components. If, for example, sodium is used as the anode and sodium perchlorate in propylene carbonate (PC) as the electrolyte, the following possibilities arise. Below the melting point of sodium (98 ° C), the anode is solid. Above this temperature, the anode is liquid. Such a cell would be limited in temperature at best by the boiling point of propylene carbonate at 242 ° C.
The current collectors and the resulting in the electrochemical reaction sulfides usually have melting point above at least 700 ° C. This would possibly limit the operating temperature above 700 ° C.
On the other hand, the electrolyte should not freeze, otherwise the ionic conductivity disappears and the viscosity diverges. For propylene carbonate, the melting point is about -48 ° C. Thus, the operation of the fuel cell according to the invention is also possible up to temperatures deep into the minus range.
Alkali metals are reactive. They can exothermically oxidise or burn on contact with air. In particular, the contact with water should be avoided, as this takes place a strong exothermic reaction, which leads to the production of hydrogen and the alkali of the corresponding alkali metal. For example, to avoid contact with air, the alkali metal could be advantageously stored in the solvent of the electrolyte.
As the surface of the alkali metal increases, reactivity also increases because of reaction with oxygen or water on the surface of the metal. Therefore, in order to avoid further safety risks, one could also store larger pieces of the alkali metal, which are mechanically comminuted shortly before use in the fuel cell.
Since the fuel cell according to the invention requires no catalysts, as are customary in hydrogen fuel cells, it can be produced significantly more cheaply. The materials used on the anode and the cathode side are not uncommon and commercially available. They deliver a high energy density compared to other batteries.
However, liquefied hydrogen reacted with a water-fuel cell has a higher energy density. The energy densities of the respective battery types as well as of liquid hydrogen and diesel as comparison values are listed in the table.
Furthermore, in the case of the fuel cell according to the invention, the problem of degradation is not to be expected here in that the electrodes do not remain stationary in the fuel cell but simultaneously act as operating means which either dissolve or are advantageously discharged on the cathode side as cathode waste product. For example, sodium in the form of small particles or powder with water would undergo a very strong, exothermic reaction. On the one hand hydrogen and on the other hand a lye would arise, which can be channeled out of the cell.
- 1. In the case of sodium as a fuel can take place the same reaction as occurs when charging a sodium sulfide battery, only that drain the products of the electrolysis. Here a "beta alumina ceramic" solid electrolyte is used. There is liquid sulfur at the anode and liquid sodium at the cathode. The sodium sulfide can be added to the anode and, applying a voltage of about 2.3 V, the Na 2 S can be decomposed into its elemental constituents.
- 2. The alkali sulfide is used as a molten salt in an electrolytic cell. In this case, however, usually high temperatures for the melting of the sulfide must be applied, which leads to a more difficult process control. The resulting alkali metals and sulfur compounds by the molten-salt electrolysis can be removed in gaseous or liquid form.
As iron with sulfur, for example, iron disulfide can be produced. Thus, advantageously, the reactants for the fuel cell (resources) can be provided again
Alternatively, alkali or alkaline earth compounds can be separated by thermal decomposition.
Further metals, such as copper, iron, arsenic, antimony or zinc, together with sulfur, could react thermally again in a further process step to form a metal sulfide or metal disulfide, which can be reused as equipment on the cathode side.

The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to drawings, without any limitation being derived. In addition, the particular advantages of sodium as a resource / electrode on the anode side are highlighted more clearly.

The aforementioned standard potentials in H 2 O are known from the literature, as are the standard potentials in propylene carbonate (PC). The melting points of the metals and their sulfides can be found in various tables. The open cell voltage (OCV) was calculated: The OCV of a LiFeS 2 battery is 1.8 V. The difference of the standard potentials of the metals in propylene carbonate was subtracted from this value. Taking into account the densities and molar proportions of the species involved, the energy densities were then calculated.
