Abstract
The present invention relates to a multi-channel detector with a plurality of sensor cells, which are arranged on a substrate or integrated in the substrate, a plurality of sensor terminals connected to the sensor terminals and a substrate terminal. The substrate terminal is connected to a fast amplifier which provides an amplified substrate signal at an amplifier output. The sensor terminals are each connected via an AC voltage coupler with an AC ground and parallel to the AC coupler with slow amplifiers, via which a respective amplified sensor signal is provided at respective amplifier outputs. When the photons hit, a fast signal is measured via the substrate connection, which can be used as a trigger to start the reading process for the sensor connections. Thus, only a fast amplifier for the optical detector is required, so that it has a low power loss with high efficiency and low noise.
Description
Technisches AnwendungsgebietTechnical application
The present invention relates to a multi-channel detector with a plurality of sensor cells, which are arranged on a common substrate or integrated into the substrate, a plurality of sensor terminals connected to the sensor terminals and at least one substrate terminal. The invention also relates to a method for reading out such a detector.
Multi-channel detectors with multiple sensor cells can be used as location-sensitive detectors, for example, when using photosensitive sensor cells for the detection of gamma quanta in positron emission tomography. The gamma quanta to be detected are absorbed in scintillation crystals, which generate several thousand optical photons due to the interaction with the gamma quanta. This light must be detected with a spatial resolution of 0.5-3 mm. The scintillation crystals are usually subdivided into columns of 0.5-3 mm width due to their high thickness of several cm required for the absorption of the gamma quantum, in order to obtain the required spatial resolution. The photons emitted by the individual columns must then be detected with a photodetector which also achieves this spatial resolution.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Such a detector may, for example, be designed as a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), in which the detector receiving surface is composed of many individual cells, referred to in the present patent application as detector or sensor cells. The detector consists of a substrate, in the case of the SiPM of silicon material, on which several sensor structures forming the sensor cells are applied or in which such sensor structures are integrated. The detector has one connection for the substrate and one connection for each sensor cell. The reading out of the sensor cells usually takes place only at the sensor connections. The sensor connections are connected to an amplifier, which amplifies the corresponding current signal. From the sensor signal the arrival time, the amplitude or the integral (i.a the charge) can be determined by suitable circuits. Hereinafter, the impact of photons on a photosensitive detector, the penetration or penetration of particles in a particle detector, etc. will be referred to as a hit or an event. To determine the time of a hit exactly how z. B. is necessary for time-of-flight PET, each readout channel must have a high bandwidth, resulting in a high power consumption of the electronics. One possible solution is the additional readout at the substrate connection, where the hits also generate signals. Unfortunately, the signal charge is divided in practice on sensor signal and substrate signal, so that in the worst case, only a small part of the signal is available and thus a precise time measurement is difficult.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a multi-channel detector and a method for reading the detector, which allow a more efficient, rapid readout of the channels with low power loss.
Darstellung der ErfindungPresentation of the invention
The object is achieved with the multi-channel detector and the method according to claims 1 and 13. Advantageous embodiments of a possible detector and the method are the subject of the dependent claims or can be found in the following description and the embodiment.
The proposed multi-channel detector has a plurality of sensor cells, which are arranged on a common substrate, in particular a semiconductor substrate, or integrated into the substrate, a plurality of sensor terminals connected to the sensor terminals and at least one substrate terminal. Each sensor cell is connected to at least one of the sensor connections. In the proposed detector, the substrate terminal is connected to a sufficiently fast first amplifier which provides an amplified substrate signal at a first amplifier output. A sufficiently fast amplifier here is to be understood as meaning an amplifier which allows a measurement of the hit time with the desired time resolution. The sensor connections are each via an AC voltage coupler, for example. A capacitor, with an AC ground and parallel connected to the AC coupler with second amplifiers, which provide respectively amplified sensor signals at second amplifier outputs.
The AC couplers are designed so that their impedance for fast signals is so low that no (voltage) signals can form when a hit on the sensor cells and therefore the entire (fast) signal appears at the substrate connection. It can therefore be detected there with good time resolution. Only the first amplifier requires a high speed and thus a high power loss. For (slower) reloading of the sensor cells, current must flow into the terminals of the sensor cells. This can not be done by the AC coupler since it does not allow DC current. The entire signal charge thus flows through the connections to the second amplifiers, where they z. B. can be integrated with charge amplifiers. The necessary amplifiers can be slower and therefore less powerful. In order to achieve a good charge dissolution one can put emphasis on low noise with these amplifiers, while with the first amplifier the emphasis lies on the speed. The two amplifiers can thus be optimized independently of each other. If a circuit is selected as the integrator, which requires a start signal, then the start signal for all second amplifiers or integrators can be determined jointly from the time signal of the first amplifier.
Verfahren. The proposed detector and the proposed method thus enable the readout of the detector, for example of SiPMs, with overall lower power loss and higher efficiency than in previously known detectors or methods.
In an advantageous embodiment of the proposed detector, the substrate connection is connected to the (first) amplifier via an AC voltage coupler. As a result, only fast signals are amplified and detected via the substrate connection. The use of an AC coupler also allows the parallel connection of a DC voltage terminal for applying a bias voltage to the substrate terminal. Such biases are typically required for the operation of semiconductor detectors.
The amplifier output of the first amplifier at the substrate connection is preferably connected to a TDC (TDC: time-to-digital converter), so that the time of the respective hit or event can be detected. The TDC preferably also includes a discriminator or the TDC is preceded by a discriminator, which only reacts above a threshold value.
The second amplifier is preferably designed as a charge amplifier (integrator).
The amplifier outputs of the second amplifiers are preferably each connected to an analog-to-digital converter for converting the detected sensor signals.
The proposed detector allows efficient readout of multiple sensor cells in the same substrate. It is achieved a good time and spatial resolution with low power consumption. In contrast to known multichannel detectors, only one fast channel is needed. The proposed detector also enables a mode of operation in which the trigger is to be limited to hits or events having a certain amplitude, in particular to reduce false noise-generated events. So far, a complicated analog summation of the N readout channels has to be done. This is omitted in the proposed detector, since the substrate connection intrinsically already supplies the corresponding sum signal.
A detector of the type proposed can be used, for example, in a gamma detector in conjunction with scintillation crystals. Application examples for this are the already mentioned PET as well as applications in the material sciences. Also in the field of research, such a detector can be used for applications in which a high spatial resolution is required with the lowest possible power loss.
