The invention relates to a use of carbon-based crystallization seeds for intensifying the hydration of hydraulic binders in the form of Portland cement and Portland composite cement. Characteristic of this invention is that after topping up by increased conversion of C3S to the hydraulic binder prior to hydration, carbon-based nucleation seeds are added, either oxidized prior to addition or in already oxidized form, the carbon oxygen-containing functional oxide generated by the oxidation Having groups on the surface which impart hydrophilicity and chemical surface reactivity by which it is chemically and physically adapted to hydration of the cement at an early stage.
Description
The invention relates to a use of carbon-based crystallization seeds for intensifying the hydration of hydraulic binders in the form of Portland cement and Portland composite cement.
The hydraulic binder Portland cement, as a basis for the production of other types of cement, makes known from a technical point of view for the cohesion of concrete, mortar, screed or plaster. Mixed with water, the so-called cement paste is formed in the first phase, which initially stiffens by reaction of the cement with the water, subsequently solidifies and subsequently hardens in time to hard cement stone. This process, in which more or less much heat is released, is also mentally deposited by the expert under the term hydration.
As previously known, the hydration of Portland cement proceeds by solution and precipitation processes by the nucleation of strength-determining reaction products of tricalcic silicate (C 3 S) and dicalcium silicate (C 2 S) with water, namely calcium silicate hydrates (further referred to as CSH), a heterogeneous Process is, ie their formation takes place directly on the surface of the partially dissolved clinker minerals. Delayed nucleation of first CSH nuclei results in an induction period during which within a few hours the rate of hydration of the cement is negligible. After expiration of the induction period, when stable CSH nuclei are formed, the acceleration of the hydration of the cement begins. This is related to the autocatalytic growth of CSH phases.
The successive covering of the cement grains with the hydration products separates the unreacted C 3 S and C 2 S from the aqueous phase and thus prevents their further dissolution. A new approach to accelerate cement hydration and to increase the turnover of C 3 S at an early age or within the first 24 hours after mixing with water is the inoculation of the cement with crystallization germs (English term "seeding") The specific surface of the crystallization nuclei and their chemical affinity towards the CSH phase can be used to provide their surface for the nucleation and further growth of calcium silicate hydrates. The targeted inoculation of the cement with crystallization nuclei on the one hand enables faster nucleation of the CSH phases on the surface In addition, the turnover of the C 3 S in the cement during the early hydration is increased, which is due to the decrease in the thickness of the cementum grains surrounding layer of hydration products and thus facilitated ion diffusion.
In the prior art, both inorganic additives such as finely ground limestone flour, nanocalcium carbonate, nanosilica, synthetic calcium silicate hydrates, and organic, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as seed for acceleration of hydration the cement used.

The main disadvantage of the aforementioned solutions is that the surface reactivity of the inorganic seed can be increased only slightly by a chemical treatment.
The preparation of fine and ultrafine limestone meal by grinding requires a high energy expenditure per newly developed surface. Among other things, by using grinding aids To avoid agglomeration of the millbase and to improve energy efficiency, the surface reactivity of calcium carbonate particles are significantly affected.
Despite the high specific surface area of nanocalcium carbonate and nanosilica, their accelerated effect on the course of hydration only became apparent when added in higher concentrations of 5% by mass for nanosilica and 10% by mass for nanocalcium carbonate, based on the amount of cement and C 3 S accordingly, observed. Considering higher costs of nanomaterials, their use as seed for cement is limited. In addition, the chemical reactivity of synthetic potassium silicate hydrates may decrease as a result of their carbonation upon storage under environmental conditions.
As can be seen from the paper "Growth of cement hydration products on single walled carbon nanotubes" by Makar, JM; Chan GW in the journal "Journal of the American Ceramic Society 92 (6) (2009) 1303-10" The effect of carbon nanotubes on the kinetics of hydration of the cement is negligible, and its effectiveness as a seed for cement is still questionable, and as experiments have shown, the surface of CNTs has less chemical reactivity compared to the other carbon materials. The lower surface reactivity of CNTs is evidently due to the strong covalent bonds within the coiled graphite layer during oxidation, which make it relatively difficult to attach active functional groups to the outer carbon layer of CNTs and, more generally, the CNTs are macroscopic upon synthesis and microscopic agglomerates Crystallization germs requires a sufficiently good separation of the CNTs and their uniform distribution in the cement. Thus, an additional step, such as dispersion, is required before the CNTs are mixed into the cement. To disperse CNTs, ultrasound treatment in a surfactant solution is currently mostly used. The absorption of surfactant molecules on the CNTs can ultimately lead to a strong reduction in the surface reactivity of the latter. Furthermore, by adding the CNTs in high concentrations due to the increase in viscosity, the processability of the cement paste can be deteriorated.
The object of the invention is now to propose a possibility for intensifying the hydration of hydraulic binders, namely Portland cement and Portlandkompositzement, in which the bindebaustofftechnischen and application disadvantages in the hydration are overcome. The hydration of the binder should be intensified in the early stage.
The rate of hydration depends not only on the cooling rate of the clinker production, the crystallite sizes, the degree of growth of the phases, the deviations from the ideal crystal structure, the presence of foreign oxides, the initial and environmental conditions but above all on the reaction rates of the individual clinker phases and their proportions.
The use according to the invention of carbon-based crystallization nuclei for intensifying the hydration of a hydraulic binder is carried out according to
Based on the fact that carbon materials are basically hydrophobic and chemically inert, a solution was sought in the first step to give these carbon materials a higher reactivity. It has been found that by oxidation of the carbon materials oxygen-containing functional groups such. For example, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups are generated which impart sufficient hydrophilicity and chemical reactivity on the surface of the carbon materials. It was further observed that in the second step, by adding such oxidized carbon materials, the cementation hydration proceeds more intensely after mixing and results in higher conversion of C 3 S in the early stage. Elaborate series of experiments have shown that carbon particles act as a preferred substrate for nucleation and for the growth of CSH phases in the hydrating cement due to the binding of calcium ions present in the aqueous phase to the functional groups. By partially transferring the formation and growth of the CSH phase to the surface of carbon particles and thus causing less coverage of unhydrated cement grains, the hydration of the cement proceeds to a greater extent due to the rapid diffusion of ions. The influence of the carbon materials on the hydration of the cement depends on their degree of functionalization or the coverage of the carbon surface with the functional groups, their specific surface and on the amount added.
In practice, the addition of the carbon-based crystallization nuclei to the hydraulic binder takes place in dry form in the form of powder or grinding material and / or in aqueous form in the form of a suspension.
Compared to the previously known from the prior art inorganic nuclei and carbon nanotubes oxidized carbon materials have a significantly reactive surface. According to the invention, the carbon-based crystallization nuclei are obtained from industrial carbon black, activated carbon or graphite. The mentioned high surface reactivity is due to the fact that due to the large number of defects that are found mainly outside of the aromatic systems at corners and edges, the chemisorption of the heteroatoms such. As oxygen, is done on the surface of carbon particles on a larger scale.
Here, different batches of industrial carbon blacks, activated carbon, massive graphite or exfoliated graphite layers (referred to as graphene oxide) are used, which are used as crystallization nuclei in terms of particle size, porosity and surface chemistry. For example, carbon black is produced in large quantities, which can easily meet the needs of the cement industry for nucleation.
It is obvious to the person skilled in the art that the carbon black used is not the harmful byproducts of combustion processes, but rather specifically modified carbon as industrial base material. These carbon blacks are known to be produced by incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of hydrocarbons in large quantities.
The addition of the carbon-based crystallization nuclei to the hydraulic binder is preferably carried out in dry form in the form of powder or grinding material and / or in aqueous form in the form of a suspension. The carbon-based crystallization nuclei present in dry form as a grinding agent are added during the grinding of the cement clinker or as a suspension directly during the production of the concrete.
