Abstract
Low energy High Current Pulsed Electron Beam ("LEHCPEB") machining for magnesium implants. The aim of this method is the improvement of medical implants, dental implants and products for osteosynthesis. This new surface treatment consists of Low Energy High Current Pulsed Electron Beam (LEHCPEB) and enhances implant properties such as corrosion protection. In this regard, it shows the processing of a hip joint implant. The tension of the surface treatment should be adjusted to produce different corrosion protection zones. This will allow anchoring and osteointegration of the bone on the implant.
Description
The invention described represents a method for improving the life of medical implants in the field of bone, dental or similar implants in which osteosynthesis is to be achieved. The processing method described herein relates to magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other alloys used in the manufacture of implants that tend to corrode under "in vivo" conditions.
At the same time, they have the disadvantage that they corrode relatively quickly as soon as they come into contact with the body's own tissue. Consequently, sufficient stability for the period of time which can not be guaranteed for the body's own reconstruction of the bone for which the implant is intended. Furthermore, magnesium alloys are susceptible to corrosion. This is often triggered by wear, friction or fatigue failure. For magnesium alloys at present, the disadvantage of the increased susceptibility to premature fractures of the prosthesis currently outweighs the advantage of biodegradability (and thus the possibility of osteosynthesis).
To address this disadvantage, an innovative surface treatment is proposed below. The method of treatment can be selectively applied in various grades, for example to control the degree of degradation of the prosthesis and to match the required period. Thanks to the method described below, therefore, the degree of degradation of the prosthesis can be controlled by the intensity of the surface treatment. For example, to achieve a comparatively faster degradation, certain zones of the prosthesis can be processed only slightly or selectively in sub-areas. This will improve the anchoring and osteointegration of the bone on the implant.
Die Bearbeitungsmethode nennt sich ”Niedrigenergetische Elektronenstrahlimpulsbearbeitung” (engl. ”Low Energy High Current Pulsed Electron Beam”, kurz ”LEHCEPB”). The processing method is called "Low Energy High Current Pulsed Electron Beam" ("LEHCEPB" for short). In a vacuum chamber with argon quench, a beam of electrons is directed to the surface of the future prosthesis. This leads to a heating of the material to the evaporation and re-crystallization of the first layers of atoms. Thus, the treated zones are precisely hardened and their resistance to corrosion and wear increased.
