Description
The present invention relates to a cylinder liner made of a cast iron material for a cylinder crankcase of an internal combustion engine. The present invention further relates to an assembly of at least one cylinder liner made of a cast iron material and a cylinder crankcase for an internal combustion engine, with at least one of the at least one cylinder liner associated coolant chamber. The present invention further relates to a method for producing such a cylinder liner.
In internal combustion engines, "wet" and "dry" cylinder liners are distinguished. In wet cylinder liners, especially in commercial vehicles, a coolant space is integrated into the cylinder crankcase and formed between the cylinder crankcase and the cylinder liner. There is a risk that the cylinder liner, which is in direct contact with the coolant, is damaged by cavitation in the coolant. The cavitation is caused, for example, by high-frequency vibrations, which are generated by the gas forces in the combustion chamber and the shock pulses in the piston side movement. These high-frequency vibrations are transmitted in particular via the cylinder liner to the coolant. The extreme pressure and temperature peaks typical of cavitation cause damage in the material of the cylinder liner, in particular in the outer jacket surface. This risk exists in particular when the cylinder liner is made of a cast iron material, since this material has a comparatively inhomogeneous structure due to the graphite inclusions (spheroidal graphite or lamellar graphite). This inhomogeneous structure is particularly susceptible to such extreme pressure and temperature peaks, so that material particles can break out of the cylinder liner. From this, a pitting can develop, whereby coolant can escape in the direction of the cylinder liner or the crankcase.
In order to form a cylinder liner cavitation resistant, it is therefore useful to defend the cavitation endangered region of the outer lateral surface. In the prior art, for example, a reinforcement on the basis of electrodeposited nickel or chromium are known. Further, a reinforcement in a close fitting to the outer surface sleeve made of a material based on steel is known. Both measures have the disadvantage that a cavitation-inhibiting effect is observed only in comparatively thick layers. This leads to an undesirably high weight of the cylinder liner and is uneconomical in mass production.
The object of the present invention is to develop a generic cylinder liner or a generic structural unit of at least one cylinder liner and a cylinder crankcase so that the risk of cavitation damage is reduced or even avoided without increasing the weight of the cylinder liner in unfavorable manner.
A first solution is that at least a portion of the outer surface of the cylinder liner has a coating of carbon steel applied by an MIG or TIG welding process. A corresponding structural unit according to the invention is characterized in that at least a partial area of the outer lateral surface of the cylinder liner is surrounded by a coating of unalloyed steel or austenitic steel facing the at least one coolant space and applied by means of an MIG or TIG welding process. A corresponding method according to the invention is characterized by the following method steps: (a) cleaning and pre-machining the outer surface of an uncoated cylinder liner or a blank of a cylinder liner; (b) heating the uncoated cylinder liner or blank to a temperature of 150 ° C to 450 ° C; (c) applying a coating of unalloyed steel with a carbon content of at most 0.20% by weight or of austenitic steel to at least a portion of the outer surface by means of a MIG or TIG welding process; (d) stress relief annealing of the cylinder liner at 450 ° C to 550 ° C; (e) Machining to finish the cylinder liner.
A second solution consists in that at least a portion of the outer circumferential surface of the cylinder liner has a coating applied by means of a welding process, which consists of a lower layer of nickel and an upper layer of a cavitation-resistant metallic material. A corresponding structural unit according to the invention is characterized in that at least a partial area of the outer lateral surface of the cylinder liner is surrounded by a coating facing the at least one coolant space, which consists of a lower layer of nickel and an upper layer of a cavitation-resistant metallic material. A corresponding method according to the invention is characterized by the following method steps: (a) cleaning and pre-machining the outer surface of an uncoated cylinder liner or a blank of a cylinder liner; (b) heating the uncoated cylinder liner or blank to a temperature of 150 ° C to 450 ° C; (c) applying a coating of a lower nickel existing layer and an upper, consisting of a cavitation-resistant material layer at least a portion of the outer surface by means of a welding process; (d) stress relief annealing of the cylinder liner at 450 ° C to 550 ° C; (e) Machining to finish the cylinder liner.
The solutions according to the invention are distinguished by the fact that the respective coating of unalloyed steel or of austenitic steel or of a lower layer of nickel and an upper layer of cavitation-resistant material can be made surprisingly thin and yet a reliable, compared with the prior art Ensure cavitation resistance of the outer surface of the cylinder liner. The risk of damage to the cylinder liner or the assembly according to the invention by cavitation is thereby significantly reduced.
Surprisingly, it has also turned out for a person skilled in the art that a coating of unalloyed steel or austenitic steel with MIG or TIG welding can be applied firmly adhering directly to the cast iron material of the cylinder liner without cracks occurring in the coating.
The terms "MIG welding" and "TIG welding" used in the specification and claims are understood as follows.

In the context of this invention, these two methods are not used for joining components, but for applying or alloying of metallic materials on the outer surface of a cylinder liner made of a cast iron material.
Vorteilhafte Weiterbildungen ergeben sich aus den Unteransprüchen.Advantageous developments emerge from the subclaims.
Expediently, that region of the outer jacket surface of the cylinder liner is surrounded by a coating according to the invention which is in direct contact with the coolant in order to optimize the protection against cavitation damage. However, it may also be sufficient to coat only a part of this area of the lateral surface according to the invention.
If the coating according to the invention surrounds a portion of the outer circumferential surface of the cylinder liner, it is expedient if it is flush with the outer circumferential surface of the cylinder liner to produce a smooth outer surface.
The cylinder liner is preferably made of a cast iron material with lamellar graphite.
An advantageous development of the first solution is that the thickness of the coating of unalloyed steel or austenitic steel, in particular for cylinder liners for commercial vehicles is at most 2.5 mm.
A preferred embodiment of the second solution provides that the thickness of the coating of nickel and a cavitation-resistant metallic material, in particular for cylinder liners for commercial vehicles is at most 3.5 mm.
The small thickness of the inventively provided coatings reduces the time required for the welding process and allows economical mass production.
The coating according to the second solution is preferably applied to the outer surface of the cylinder liner by means of a MIG or TIG welding process. As materials of the upper layer, in particular, austenitic or martensitic steels and non-ferrous materials (known as Stellite ®) are steel materials, eg. Cobalt-chromium basis.
A further development of the method according to the invention provides that uncoated cylinder liners or blanks are used, the outer surface of which has a radial depression, which is preferably set back by 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm in relation to the outer diameter of the outer jacket surface.
