Description
The invention relates to a battery, for example a high-voltage battery, and a method for controlling a battery.
Batteries, in particular high-voltage batteries, are used, for example, in electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. A battery for an electric vehicle or hybrid vehicle includes a number of battery cells. These battery cells may conform to various battery technologies, such as lithium ion technology, nickel metal hydride technology, lead acid battery technology, or other battery technology.
A high-voltage battery for an electric vehicle includes a large number of battery cells, which are usually arranged in modules to meet the vehicle's performance and range requirements. The individual battery cells or battery modules are preferably connected electrically in series. Battery cells or battery modules can also be connected in parallel electrically. The series connection of battery cells or battery modules are limited by the limitations of power electronics. Currently, for example, in the vehicle high-voltage infrastructure for traction drives, the voltage limit is approximately 445 V. Assuming a lithium ion technology with a cell voltage of 4.2 V, so are currently battery strings with about 108 cells possible.

The object of the present invention is to provide a battery and a method for controlling a battery which at least partially overcome the abovementioned disadvantages. This object is achieved by the battery according to the invention and by the corresponding control method as defined in the attached patent claims. Further advantageous embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the dependent claims and the following description of preferred embodiments.
Ausführungsbeispiele der Erfindung werden beispielhaft und unter Bezugnahme auf die beigefügte Zeichnung beschrieben, in denen: Embodiments of the invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
In the embodiments described below batteries for the provision of a battery current are described. The batteries may be, for example, lithium ion batteries, nickel metal hydride cell batteries, or any other type of battery. The batteries provide a battery power ready, for example, for the supply of a traction drive of an electric or Hybrid motor vehicle with electrical energy. However, the described batteries can also be used for other types of vehicles, such as bicycles, scooters, motorcycles, electric boats, aircraft, trains or other types of vehicles.
An exemplary battery has a battery module string of a plurality of battery modules. Each battery module comprises at least one battery cell, in the case of a lithium-ion battery, for example, lithium-ion cells. In a battery module several battery cells can be packed. For example, a battery module may have twelve series-connected lithium-ion cells. Such a battery module is hereinafter referred to as 12s1p module, wherein 12s denotes the twelve series-connected battery cells and 1p indicates that the battery module consists of only one strand of series-connected battery cells and has no further parallel-connected battery cells. An exemplary high-voltage battery may include a plurality, e.g. nine of such 12s1p battery modules are connected in series to form a battery, which can be referred to as 108s1p, ie in which 108 battery cells are connected in series. Alternatively, a battery module according to the invention can also have two or more battery strings connected in parallel. Accordingly, another example high voltage battery could also include nine 12s2p battery modules, where 2p indicates that the battery module consists of two strings of series connected battery cells to form a battery, which may be referred to as 108s2p. If a lithium-ion cell in the charged state has a voltage of 4.2 V, for example, a module voltage of 50.4 V results for a corresponding 12s1p battery module. This exemplary 108s1p battery has a maximum battery voltage of approximately 453.6 when charged V up.
The exemplary battery further includes a switching unit having at least a first and a second switching state, wherein in the first switching state, a first subset of battery modules of the battery module string are connected in series to participate in the provision of the current, and wherein in the second switching state, a second subset Battery modules of the battery module string are connected in series to participate in the provision of the current. By means of the switching unit, any predetermined subsets of battery modules can be selected, which participate in the provision of the battery current. With the switching unit, for example, certain battery modules can be switched on to provide the battery current or exclude it from providing the battery current. The switching unit can cause a bypass in this sense, which makes it possible to bypass one or more battery modules or not. However, the invention is not limited to batteries with only one switching unit. An exemplary battery may also include a plurality of switching units. Corresponding embodiments are described in more detail below.
The exemplary battery has a voltage determination unit for determining the electrical voltage of the battery modules involved in the provision of the battery current. The voltage measurement can be carried out for example by a voltage measuring device which determines the electrical voltage between the poles of the battery. However, the voltage measurement can also be carried out, for example, by a battery management system which determines cell voltages and possibly other variables such as temperature and resistance of battery cells. The voltage detection unit can either detect the voltage directly by measuring the voltage or use indirect methods, e.g. from a state of charge value (SoC) and a known state of charge-voltage characteristic curve on the battery voltage.
The exemplary battery also has a control unit, which is set up to control the switching unit as a function of the determined electrical voltage. The control unit may be a logic circuit or a programmable microprocessor provided for the evaluation of the measured voltage and the control of the switching unit. The control unit may be part of a battery management system, for example, or implemented in a central computer of a vehicle. Also, the control unit could be located in a battery to be controlled, or even outside a battery to be controlled. By driving the switching unit, the control unit, depending on the measured voltage select predetermined amounts of battery modules that participate in the provision of battery power.
By way of example, the control unit can be set up in such a way that it controls the switching unit in such a way that, in the event of a voltage drop below a predetermined threshold, at least one additional battery module for supplying the battery current is connected. If a further battery module is connected in series when the voltage drops below a predetermined threshold value, the removable capacitance does not increase, but the voltage of the battery can thereby be kept close to the upper limit of the power electronics in the case of a traction battery. Since the energy content of a battery increases linearly with the voltage, the energy content of the battery modules involved in providing the battery voltage can thus be optimally utilized. Furthermore, by the higher voltage assuming the same current to increase or maintain the power.
The threshold value can be preset, for example, in the control unit. For example, the threshold value can be determined as a function of the voltage of the switchable battery module. If the upper voltage limit of the power electronics is 445 V and if a switchable 12s1p battery module has a voltage of 12 × 4.2 V = 50.4 V when the battery cells are fully charged, the threshold value may, for example, be 455 V-50.4 V. = 404.6V. If the battery voltage falls below the threshold value, the control unit can connect the additional battery module so that the battery voltage is again at the upper voltage limit of 445 V and thus the energy content of the battery is optimally utilized. If the available additional battery module is not fully charged, the cell voltage is lower. For lithium-ion cells with e.g. If the cell voltage of a partially discharged lithium-ion cell, for example, instead of the full voltage of 4.2 V only 3.6 V, has a corresponding 12s1p battery module a voltage of only 12 × 3.6V = 43.2V. In this case, the threshold is chosen to be 455V - 43.2V = 411.8V. If the battery voltage falls below the threshold value of 411.8 V, the control unit can connect the additional battery module so that the battery voltage is again at the voltage upper limit of 445 V and thus the energy content of the battery is optimally utilized. The control unit can determine the auxiliary voltages of the switchable batteries which are helpful for the determination of the threshold value, for example by means of corresponding voltage measuring units, or these can be made available by a battery management system.
The control unit can also control the switching unit such that in the case of a voltage increase over a predetermined limit voltage at least one battery module is excluded from the provision of the battery current. For example, in the case of a traction battery, the control unit can prevent the battery voltage from exceeding the voltage limit of the power electronics and thus protect it from overloading. This is particularly advantageous to compensate for voltage fluctuations due to the changing voltage drop across the internal resistance of a battery module with variable power extraction. The voltage drop across the internal resistance of a battery cell changes with the current drawn or with the power drawn. The higher the battery current removed, the more voltage drops across the internal resistances of the battery cells. The voltage drop across the internal resistance reduces the battery voltage available at the battery poles. Thus, the voltage of a battery module or the battery voltage depends on the power extraction. If, for example, a motor vehicle accelerates, the power supplied to the traction motor or the power taken from the traction battery increases. As a result, the battery voltage drops. If the battery voltage falls below a defined threshold value, the controller can connect an additional battery module according to the principles described above in order to keep the voltage close to the voltage limit of the power electronics. If the acceleration process of the motor vehicle ends, the electric power taken from the traction battery decreases again and the voltage drop at internal resistances reduces again, so that the battery voltage rises again. In order to avoid that the battery voltage with the connected battery module rises above the voltage limit of the power electronics, the additional battery module is disconnected again when the voltage limit is reached, i. excluded from the provision of battery power. As a result, the battery voltage remains below the voltage limit and overloading of the power electronics can be avoided.
The control unit described by way of example can thus keep the battery voltage dynamically in an optimum range in order to optimize the extractable energy content, to ensure maximum power availability or to reduce the current load on the cells and thus to avoid overloading the power electronics.
In the above description, in order to explain the principles of the invention, the case of a single connectable battery module has been considered, which may be connected by means of a switching unit or excluded from the provision of battery power. However, an exemplary battery may include other switching units for selectively defining subsets of battery modules of the battery module string connected in series to participate in the provision of battery power. Thus, several battery modules or even any battery modules can be added or excluded in a flexible manner. The person skilled in the various options are available to arrange such switching units and battery modules. For example, a separate switching unit can be provided for each switchable battery module with which the associated battery module can be individually connected or excluded. It is also possible to arrange a plurality of switching units so that a predetermined series of additional Battery modules are involved by appropriate control of the switching elements sequentially to the provision of battery power.
To simplify the Verschaltungsaufwandes a certain number of battery modules can be firmly involved in the provision of battery power and form a main battery. For example, with a voltage limit of 445 V of power electronics, eight 12s1p lithium-ion battery modules that together provide a voltage of 8 × 12 × 4.2V = 403.2V when fully charged may be used as the main battery and fixed be involved in the battery current without the risk that the voltage upper limit of the power electronics is exceeded. Switching units for removing these battery modules can be dispensed with. However, the battery may include a number of additional 12s1p battery modules, or other modules, such as 6s1p battery modules, 6s2p battery modules, single cells, or the like, which may be added as needed by the control unit to bring the battery voltage as close as possible to keep the voltage limit of the power electronics. Alternatively, instead of a fixed involvement of the eight 12s1p battery modules, individual or all of these battery modules could be provided with a switching unit in order to be able to exclude or reconnect one or more of these battery modules of the main battery from the supply of battery power.
If, by means of a plurality of circuit units, one or more battery modules can be flexibly connected and removed, flexible voltage jumps can be achieved by selecting corresponding subgroups of battery modules. If, for example, a fully charged switchable 12s1p battery module with 50.4 V and a fully charged switchable 6s1p battery module with 25.2 V are available, by selective addition of one of the two battery modules, voltage jumps of 25.2 V or 50.4 can be achieved V can be achieved, or by simultaneous addition of both battery modules, a voltage jump of 25.2 V + 50.4 V = 75.6 V can be achieved. Occurs on a traction battery of a motor vehicle, for example, a high voltage drop due to a strong acceleration and the associated high power draw, so both battery modules can be added to compensate for the voltage drop. If the power consumption then decreases again slowly, then the two additional modules can be successively excluded again from the provision of the battery current.
The switchable battery modules can be dimensioned in terms of their capacities so that the charge quantities of hinzuschaltbaren battery modules are taken optimized. For example, in an exemplary battery, a first subset of battery modules may include predetermined battery modules, each having a common capacitance. A second subset of battery modules may include, in addition to these battery modules of the first subset of battery modules, one or more addendrable battery modules whose capacity is less than the capacity of the battery modules of the first subset. In an exemplary scenario, e.g. nine 12s1p battery modules are provided in the battery module string, which together have a voltage of 9 × 12 × 4.2 V = 453.6 V near the voltage limit of a power electronics and each having a capacity of 28 Ah and as a main battery firmly to the provision of the Batteriestromes are involved. Since these battery modules are the same size and are always stressed at the same time, their state of charge decreases even when power is removed, i. After a certain power consumption, these battery modules have the same reduced state of charge. The state of charge (also called "state of charge", in short SoC) is a characteristic value for the state of charge of batteries. The state of charge value indicates the remaining available amount of charge of a battery in relation to the nominal value. The state of charge value is expressed as a percentage of the nominal value, i. indicated by the fully charged state. A charge state value of 50% means, for example, that the battery still has a remaining charge of 50% based on the full charge of 100%. A battery module with a nominal capacity of 28 Ah, for example, has a charge state value of 50% only a removable amount of charge of 14 Ah. The state of charge value of a battery module can be determined in the manner known to the person skilled in the art, for example by voltage measurement, on a current-integrative basis, by measuring the impedance, in batteries with liquid electrolyte on a chemical basis, or in NiMH batteries by means of the dependency of the charge state value on the internal pressure. The method of voltage measurement uses predetermined discharge curves to determine the state of charge value. In the current-integrative method, the charge state value is determined via the battery current during an integration time. Furthermore, a combination of two or more of said methods is possible.
If a battery module which can be connected to the mains is dimensioned such that it has a smaller nominal capacity than the permanently installed battery modules of a main battery, the available capacity of this switchable module can be better utilized. Falls through, for example Withdraws the state of charge of nine 12s1p battery modules of the main 28 Ah battery of nominal capacity from a maximum value to a 60% charge state value until it finally falls below a 400 V battery voltage threshold, which is used to connect an additional 12s1p battery module to 50.4 V voltage leads, it is sufficient and preferred if the switchable battery module has a nominal capacity of 60% × 28 Ah = 16.8 Ah. When this additional battery module is connected to the 60% state of charge of the 28 Ah nominal capacity battery modules, all of the remaining battery modules have a removable residual capacity of 16.8 Ah, so that as the power is removed, all the battery modules reach the fully discharged state at about the same time. If the switchable battery module had a larger size, eg with a nominal capacity of 28 Ah, which corresponds to that of the permanently installed battery modules of the main battery, a no longer removable residual capacity would remain in the connected battery module if the firmly installed battery modules have already reached the discharged state , The described principle of capacity optimization can be extended to other switchable battery modules. Thus, for example, a second switchable 12s1p battery module could be switched on at a state of charge value of about 35%. For this second switchable 12s1p battery module, a nominal capacity of 35% × 28 Ah = 9.8 Ah would be sufficient. By appropriate dimensioning, therefore, the capacity of the switchable battery modules can be optimally used. This has the advantage that the switchable battery modules can be sized smaller and cheaper. It is also possible, for example, to use an older cell generation for cost optimization or a power cell for weight and space optimization.
As a switching unit for connecting additional battery modules or cells can be used in the batteries described, for example, a bistable relay. This has the advantage that the Verschaltungsaufwand is low. Preferably, semiconductor switches are used as the switching unit. This has the advantage that a switching unit is switchable even when power is removed, so that a dynamic optimization of the battery voltage, for example, during power extraction can be done. Thus, if high power is required in the short term, one or more battery modules or cells can be flexibly switched on. Conversely, a switched-on module can be switched off again if necessary in a recuperation phase, e.g. when it has already reached its fully charged state. Thus, despite the limitation of the voltage of a power electronics, a maximum recuperation current can be loaded into the remaining battery modules. This can be achieved in some driving situations better performance.
By means of the described exemplary batteries, the usable energy content of a battery system can be increased, in particular a battery system which works close to a voltage limit predetermined by the electrical components of a connected electronics. It thus becomes possible to design battery systems which, despite given limitations, such as voltage limits of power electronics, provide higher energy contents. It may also be possible by the batteries described by way of example to increase the energy content of a drive battery, without having to resort to a use of parallel-connected battery cells. Further, with the example batteries, due to the optimization of the battery voltage, it becomes possible to extract a maximum electric power over a larger state of charge range.
An exemplary method for controlling a battery as described above comprises determining the electrical voltage of the battery modules involved in the provision of the battery current and driving the switching unit as a function of the determined electrical voltage. The method may further comprise controlling the switching unit such that in the event of a voltage drop below a predetermined threshold, at least one additional battery module is added to provide the battery power. The method may also include controlling the switching unit such that in the event of a voltage increase above a predetermined limit voltage at least one battery module is excluded from the provision of the battery current.
Embodiments of a battery according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The dotted line shows an example of the battery voltage of a 96s1p battery without a bypass. At 100% state of charge (fully charged), the 96s1p battery has a battery voltage of 96 × 4.2V = 403.2V. The curve shown ends just below 400 V, because the consumer is not provided with the total available capacity of 100% to increase the life of the battery, but only a slightly reduced capacity, here about 95%. When power is removed from the battery, the charge state value drops to a minimum value of about 18%. To increase the life of the battery, a full removal of the available capacity is prevented. The battery voltage drops linearly with decreasing state of charge value to about 290V. For this case of the 96s1p battery, a usable energy content of 8617 Wh was determined in a simulation.
The bold-dashed, dotted parallel line shows the course of the battery voltage of a 108s1p battery without a bypass. At 100% state of charge (fully charged), the 108s1p battery has a battery voltage of 108 × 4.2V = 453.6V, which is slightly above the power electronics voltage limit of 455V. Therefore, only about 88% of the nominal capacity of the 108s1p battery is provided to the load so that the battery voltage does not rise above 445V. When power is removed from the battery, the state of charge value drops to a minimum value of about 18%. The battery voltage drops linearly with decreasing state of charge value to about 330V. For this case of the 108s1p battery, a usable energy content of 9189 Wh was determined in a simulation. The capacity of the 108s1p battery can not be used optimally due to the limitations of the power electronics limit voltage and to avoid maximum charging of the battery.
The faint dashed line shows the course of the battery voltage of a 120s1p battery without bypass. At 100% state of charge (fully charged), the 120s1p battery would have a battery voltage of 120 x 4.2V = 504V, well above the voltage limit of the power electronics. Therefore, the 120s1p battery can not be fully charged. Only about 61% of the nominal capacity of the battery can be made available to the consumer. When power is removed from the battery, the state of charge value drops to a minimum value of about 18%. The battery voltage drops linearly with decreasing state of charge value to about 365V. For this case of the 120s1p battery, a usable energy content of only 5967 Wh was determined in a simulation. The capacity of the 120s1p battery can therefore be exploited only very poorly due to the limitations of the voltage limit voltage.
The dashed-dotted line shows the course of the battery voltage of a 120s1p battery, whereby one of the 12s1p battery module can be bypassed and can be connected by means of the control unit if necessary. With a high state of charge greater than 61%, the switchable battery module will not be energized so that the 120s1p battery voltage will be that of a 108s1p battery with no bypass and will remain below the 445V limit of the power electronics. The voltage curve runs in this area equal to the bold dashed curve of the 108s1p battery without bypass. At about 61% state of charge value, the battery voltage has fallen by about 400 V so far that the switchable 12s1p battery module can be connected. The battery voltage thereby rises to about 445 V and is thus again at the voltage limit of the power electronics. With increasing power consumption, the battery voltage drops linearly with decreasing state of charge value to about 370V. In this case, the 120s1p battery with bypass was found to have a usable energy content of 9830 Wh in a simulation, which is significantly higher than the simulated usable energy content of 5967 Wh of a 120s1p battery without a bypass (weak dashed line) and higher, as the simulated usable energy content of 9189 Wh of a 108s1p battery without a bypass (bold dashed line).
The dashed two-dot line shows the battery voltage of a 132s1p battery, with two 12s1p battery modules can be bypassed and can be connected by the control unit if necessary. With a high state of charge greater than 61%, the switchable battery module is not powered up so that the voltage of the 132s1p battery is equal to that of a 108s1p battery without bypass and remains below the 445V limit of the power electronics. The voltage curve runs in this area equal to the bold dashed curve of the 108s1p battery without bypass. At about 61% state of charge value, the battery voltage has fallen by about 400 V so that one of the switchable 12s1p battery module can be connected. As a result, the battery voltage rises to about 445 V, which is again at the voltage limit of the power electronics. With increasing power consumption, the battery voltage decreases linearly again with decreasing charge state value. At a state of charge value of about 35%, the battery voltage has fallen again so far that the second of the switchable 12s1p battery module can also be connected. As a result, the battery voltage rises again to about 445 V and is thus again at the voltage limit of the power electronics. As power consumption increases, the battery voltage eventually decreases linearly with decreasing state of charge value to a final value of about 420V. For this case of the 132s1p battery with two switchable battery modules, a usable energy content of 10090 Wh was determined in a simulation. The fact that the battery voltage is high even at low state of charge values, the energy content of the battery modules is well utilized.
