The object of the invention is that in a multi-stage turbocharger (2) an increase in the relative humidity due to a temperature decrease in an intermediate cooling system (7) is counteracted by removing moisture. A dehumidifying device (8) is arranged between the intermediate cooling (7) and a compressor 41) of the high pressure stage (4). The dehumidifying device (8) has a swirl-generating element (82) such as a centrifugal separator. As a result, the air flow, which essentially follows the direction of the air line, is set into a twisting movement. Because of this swirling movement, centrifugal forces occur within the flow, which centrifugal forces transport water droplets present in the air flow outwards in the direction of the inner wall of the air line (81). In this way, water vapor can condense and the water droplets can be separated from the flow and thus the relative humidity can be reduced, even if the cooling in the intermediate cooling (7) takes place to a temperature at which the air flow has already fallen below the dew point.

The present invention relates to the field of multistage turbochargers. It relates to a dehumidifying device for a multi-stage charging device, a multi-stage charging device with a dehumidifying device and a turbocharger with multi-stage charging device and a dehumidifying device.
STAND DER TECHNIKSTATE OF THE ART
Turbochargers, which are also referred to as exhaust gas turbochargers, are generally constructed of a compressor and an exhaust gas turbine, which are mechanically connected to each other via a common shaft. Exhaust gases of a piston engine are supplied to the exhaust gas turbine. Since these exhaust gases are expanded incompletely, a part of the remaining energy of the exhaust gas is converted into rotational energy of the exhaust gas turbine. The rotational energy of the exhaust gas turbine is transmitted via the shaft to the compressor, which compresses the fresh air supplied to the piston engine. Thus, the piston engine can be charged with significantly more fresh air, which leads to an increase in efficiency of the piston engine.
The efficiency of such a multi-stage turbocharger system, as discussed above, is highly dependent on the temperature of the intermediate cooling. The problem is that the relative humidity of the fresh air increases due to the intercooling. This can be below the dew point, which leads to the formation of water droplets in the air flow. These water droplets impinge on the compressor of the high-pressure stage at high relative speed and, due to the incompressibility of the water and due to the high momentum of the water droplets, can lead to drop erosion on the compressor blades of the high-pressure stage.
A well-known solution to this problem is to design the intermediate cooling so that the air does not fall below the dew point. When designing must have a certain security be taken into account so that the permissible relative humidity must be kept well below 100 percent. This means that the efficiency-enhancing cooling down is significantly limited, thus limiting the overall efficiency of multi-stage turbochargers.
DARSTELLUNG DER ERFINDUNGPRESENTATION OF THE INVENTION
Object of the present invention is to provide a multi-stage turbocharger, which has a higher efficiency.
This object is achieved by a device having the features of the independent patent claims. Preferred embodiments are subject of the dependent claims.
The object of the invention is that the increase in the relative humidity due to the reduction in temperature in an intermediate cooling by a withdrawal of moisture is counteracted. In this case, a dehumidifying device is arranged between the intermediate cooling and a compressor of the high-pressure stage. The dehumidifying device has a spin-generating element such as a centrifugal separator. As a result, the air flow following the direction of the air duct is set into a swirling movement. Due to this swirling motion, centrifugal forces occur within the flow, which centrifugal forces in the air flow transport water droplets outward in the direction of the inner wall of the air duct. So steam can be condensed and the water droplets are eliminated from the flow and thus the relative humidity can be reduced, even if the cooling takes place in the intermediate cooling to a temperature at which the air flow has already fallen below the dew point. This allows a greater cooling of the air flow without causing erosion damage on the compressor wheel. This leads to an increased overall efficiency of the turbocharger.
A first preferred embodiment of the dehumidifying device has a radial constriction of the air duct so that the cross-sectional area of the air duct is reduced at the location of the constriction. The constriction accelerates the flow of air, which leads to an increase in the twist and thus the centrifugal forces. The amplification of the twist leads to a decrease in the temperature of the flow and thus to condensation of the water vapor in the flow. The centrifugal forces promote these drops of water to the wall of the flow-bearing geometry, from where they can be removed from the flow.
A further advantageous embodiment of the dehumidifying device has a Laval nozzle as a constriction of the air line. The Laval nozzle, which may also be referred to as a Laval-like nozzle, has first a convergent and then a divergent cross-section, the transitions from the convergent part to the divergent part being gradual. For the invention, it is not essential that the air flow reaches the speed of sound at the narrowest cross-section of the Laval nozzle. Due to the narrowing of the cross section of the air line in the convergent part and the subsequent expansion of the cross section in the divergent part, the flow is delayed again after the acceleration and the associated reduction of pressure and amplification of the swirl and thus the pressure again increased and the swirl again reduced. This makes it possible to reduce the pressure loss.
A further advantageous embodiment of the dehumidifying device comprises a spin-generating element, a swirl-reducing element or a swirl-producing element and a swirl-reducing element with a variable geometry. The geometry can be adjusted during operation of the dehumidifier and so the flow conditions can be influenced. This allows control of the dehumidifying device based on the relative humidity and leads to a reduction in the pressure loss.
