Durch Aus- bzw. Einschlagen des Stoffeinsatzes soll der untere Saum des Umhanges unabhängig vom Vorhandensein eines Tornisters oder Rucksackes immer etwa gleich hoch vom Boden entfernt sein. Solche Regenponchos haben sich in der Praxis allerdings sämtlich als nachteilig erwiesen. Zum einen sind Regenponchos zumeist wenig oder nicht wasserdicht und atmungsaktiv. Zum anderen sind Regenponchos in aller Regel von einer Form, die entweder keinen oder allenfalls einen nur sehr begrenzten seitlichen Schutz gegen Regen (bei gleichzeitig auftretendem seitlichen Wind) und/oder einen nur äußerst geringen Tragkomfort bieten. In ersterem Fall kann Regen seitlich auf einen Wanderer oder Pilger und dessen Arme treffen.
