Abstract
Decontaminated activated carbons are used for passive collectors, whose content of organic contaminants, especially monomeric polycyclic aromatics (MPA), other hydrocarbons, fats, tar oils or waxes, has been completely or at least predominantly converted into polymeric polycyclic aromatics (PPA).
Description
Decontaminated activated carbons are claimed for passive samplers whose content of organic impurities, in particular toluene-extractable monomeric polycyclic aromatics (MPA) but also other hydrocarbons, fats, tar oils or waxes, completely or at least predominantly in non-toluene-extractable polymeric polycyclic aromatics (PPA) was converted. The PPAs in the claimed activated carbons are characterized by a high content of sulfur and / or oxygen-containing substituents.
For some applications, especially as passive samplers for analytical applications, it is necessary that there are activated carbons available whose content of toluene extractable is minimized or no longer detectable.
The present invention therefore claims decontaminated activated carbons for passive samplers whose production-related contamination with organic impurities, especially MPA or other toluene extractables, has been converted to non-extractable PPA by one or more oxidation, polycondensation and / or polymerization processes. The term contaminated activated carbon also includes those activated carbons which have been contaminated by other toluene-extractable carbon compounds from the group of hydrocarbons, fats, tar oils or waxes, for example bitumen, heating oil, asphaltenes, stearin. Also, these substances are converted into such decontaminated activated carbons in the respective activated carbons under the conditions of preparation described below for MPA-contaminated activated carbons whose original content of hydrocarbons, fats, tar oils or waxes has been converted into non-extractable PPA. Unless the original contamination reaches a concentration in the activated carbon exceeding the single-digit percentage by mass, the claimed decontaminated activated carbons retain over 90% of their BET surface area.
Excluded from the decontaminated activated carbon for passive samplers are only those whose original organic impurities belong to the group of perhalogenated substances, in particular from the group of fluorine-chlorine and bromine-containing organic substances, since they do not demobilize with the claimed manufacturing process quantitatively as PPA to let.
Nevertheless, it has been possible to convert the MPA-containing activated carbons into the claimed PPA-containing activated carbons for passive samplers by treatment with the methods of oxidative substitution and dehydrogenation. This is attributed to the fact that the MPA under reaction conditions are subject only subordinate to the cross-linking with each other, but predominantly undergo a chemical bond with the aromatic graphene molecules of the activated carbon.
For the purpose of converting the activated carbon containing MPA into the PPA-containing activated carbon, at least one sulfur compound selected from the group consisting of the halosulfanes and / or elemental sulfur modifications is preferably used as starting material. It is also possible to use mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfur tetrachloride, which react at least partially in Dischwefeldichlorid in the course of the reaction. Another successful method is to use solutions of sulfur in sulfuryl chloride. However, the preferred starting material for converting the MPA-containing activated carbons into PPA-containing activated carbons is elemental calcification.
When using elemental sulfur, reaction temperatures between 300 and 450 ° C are preferably used to trigger the formation of PPA from the MPA in the activated carbon. In the reactions with liquid or gaseous disulfur dichloride reaction temperatures between 100 and 200 ° C are preferably used to trigger the formation of PPA from the MPA in the activated carbon. The conversion of MPA to PPA is carried out at an extremely high stoichiometric sulfur excess using a sulfur to MPA carbon ratio of at least 10 4 .
When the conversion of MPA is carried out with Dischwefeldichlorid, preferably temperature range of 100 to 200 ° C are applied. Preferably, the reaction is carried out at the boiling point of Dischwefeldichlorids.
The reaction of the MPA-containing activated carbon with disulfur dichloride has the disadvantage that the reagent and the main reaction reaction product are hydrogen chloride of great toxicity and aggressiveness. However, the low reaction temperature and the high reaction rate with which MPA is converted into PPA are advantageous. If the reaction is carried out at reflux, ie at the boiling point of Dischwefeldichlorids, the reaction can be completed within an hour.
When the reaction of MPA in PPA is carried out in the activated carbon with elemental sulfur, also a reaction acceleration by the presence of a Lewis catalyst, such as. As sulfuryl chloride and aluminum chloride, are triggered. The reaction temperatures are preferably maintained between 200 and 300 ° C. At 200 ° C reaction temperature, it takes two hours for PPA formation to complete. The use of Lewis catalysts is not preferred when Dischwefeldichlorid is used as a reactant, since chlorinated polycyclic aromatic compounds can be formed.
In order to be able to use the inventive PPA-containing activated carbons, it is generally necessary to remove the sulfur-containing reaction products from the activated carbon. This can be achieved by physically acting extraction agents with good sulfur solubility, such. As carbon disulfide or tetrachloroethen happen.
However, this method is disadvantageous because the organic extractant must be driven out of the activated carbon by hot steam again.
Preferably, therefore, chemically active inorganic extractants having good sulfur solubility, such as. Example, caustic soda or other alkali solutions, solutions of ammonium sulfide, sodium sulfide or other alkali and alkaline earth sulfides, ammonia or ammonium carbonate used to remove the sulfur-containing reaction products from the claimed activated carbon. Beforehand, however, by the addition of water or steam optionally contained in the activated carbon acid-reacting particularly violently reacting with alkalis residues such. As Lewis acids, disulfide dichloride and hydrochloric acid and extracted. Subsequently, the alkaline reagents are added to the still hot aqueous reaction mixture and thus boiled at reflux. For quantitative sulfur removal, the charcoal may need to be treated a second time with Alkaline Reagents. Preferably, the alkaline extractants are used at temperatures above the melting point of the elemental sulfur.
In order to remove the polysulfides formed from the activated carbon dilute hydrogen peroxide solution is added to oxidize the polysulfides to thiosulfate and optionally polythionates. Subsequently, the activated carbon is washed with water to remove the thiosulfate and polythionate. Possibly. Residues of thiosulphate and polythionate remaining on the activated charcoal can, preferably after Acidification with hydrochloric acid, be oxidized by treatment with potassium permanganate in an acidic medium to sulfate. Manganese salts and acid can be removed by washing with water and finally washing with ammonia-containing water.
Afterwards the activated carbon is active as passive collector and the originally existing MPA quantitatively converted into PPA.
Less preferably, instead of the sulfur-containing reactants for converting the MPA into the PPA on the activated carbon, it is also possible to use oxygen-containing oxidizing agents in which oxygen-containing PPA is formed.
For the formation of the oxygen-containing PPA can also be proceeded according to different variants: As reactants to oxygen compounds are used, which have at a given reaction temperature over a sufficient oxidation potential.
With oxidants with a particularly high oxidation potential, such as hydroxyl radicals, ozone and persulfate, the MPA can already be converted between room temperature and 100 ° C to PPA. An example of such a reaction is the well-known Fenton reaction, in which dilute hydrogen peroxide is reacted with iron (II) salts to form iron (III) hydroxide and hydroxyl radicals at room temperature, which trigger the conversion of MPA into PPA.
With oxidizing agents whose oxidation potential is also still in the upper range, such as hydrogen peroxide, peroxides of alkali and alkaline earth metals, potassium permanganate, and sulfuric potassium dichromate temperatures between 100 and 150 ° C are sufficient to convert the MPA to PPA. An example of such a reaction is the reaction of MPA to PPA with sulfuric acid potassium dichromate at 50 ° C.
With oxygen-releasing oxidants of medium to low oxidation potential, such as. As diatomic oxygen, iron (III) oxide, sulfuric acid, sulfates and hydrogen sulfates, temperatures between 200 and 400 ° C are necessary to react within reaction times under one day, the MPA for the most part to PPA. An example of such a reaction is the oxidation with air at 230 ° C, which triggers the reaction of MPA in PPA.
By impregnation of the activated carbon with dilute aqueous iron (III) chloride solution, which preferably has a concentration between 0.1 and 20%, preferably between 1 and 5% and subsequent neutralization to neutral to slightly alkaline pH, followed by water washing, and After drying, the contaminated activated carbon can be coated with the oxidizing agent iron (III) oxide hydrate. The iron (III) oxide hydrate content in the contaminated activated carbon is preferably adjusted so that the atomic ratio of carbon to iron is greater than 10. The setting of the preferred atomic ratio is achieved by selecting the applied iron (III) chloride concentration in the impregnating solution.
By impregnation with the dilute aqueous solution of a reducing agent, for example, sodium thiosulfate, ascorbic acid, pyrogallol, sodium sulfite, and then drying, the contaminated activated carbon is coated with a reducing agent. Subsequent contact with an aqueous permanganate solution, e.g. As potassium permanganate, which has a concentration of preferably 1 to 3%, is precipitated on the activated carbon manganese dioxide. After drying, a braunstein-containing activated carbon is obtained. The brownstone content in the contaminated activated carbon is preferably adjusted so that the atomic ratio of carbon to manganese is greater than 10. The setting of the preferred atomic ratio is achieved by selecting the reducing agent concentration used in the impregnating solution.
The precipitation of manganese dioxide also succeeds without the addition of reducing agents, if the impregnation with permanganate solution takes place at temperatures above 40 ° C. After drying, a braunstein-containing activated carbon is obtained. The brownstone content in the contaminated activated carbon is preferably adjusted so that the atomic ratio of carbon to manganese is greater than 10. The setting of the preferred atomic ratio is achieved by selecting the applied Permanganatkonzentation in the impregnating solution and the duration of the impregnation process, because as long as the impregnation solution still permanganate is included in the impregnation solution, the manganese occupancy of the activated carbon increases with increasing duration.
By heating the contaminated activated carbons coated with iron oxide hydrate and / or manganese dioxide at 400 to 700 ° C, preferably at 500 to 600 ° C under a protective gas atmosphere, for. As nitrogen or carbon dioxide, the decontamination of activated carbon succeeds for passive collectors.
By simple impregnation of the activated carbon with dilute silver nitrate solution, which preferably contains a silver nitrate content between 0.1 and 0.5%, the contaminated activated carbon is impregnated with silver. After drying, a silver-containing activated carbon is obtained. The silver content in the contaminated activated carbon is preferably adjusted so that the atomic ratio of carbon to Manganese is greater than 20. The setting of the preferred atomic ratio is achieved by selecting the applied silver nitrate concentration in the impregnating solution.
By heating the contaminated carbons coated with silver to 200 to 500 ° C, preferably at 250 to 400 ° C under accurate temperature control under an oxygen-depleted atmosphere whose oxygen content was preferably depleted to less than 10%, the decontamination of the activated carbon for passive samplers succeeds.
A particularly preferred purpose for which the claimed activated charcoal containing PPA is useful is its use as a passive sampler to determine the load on the environmental compartments, in particular air, wastewater, natural waters and groundwater, for their content of polycyclic aromatics. For this purpose, preferably fibrous activated carbon is used.
