Underground pipelines for the transport of gas, particularly natural gas under high pressure, are usually made of steel. In a pipeline network or pipeline network for natural gas, the gas is under a pressure of approx. 60 bar. To detect material loss and cracks in the pipe wall, intelligent inspection devices (inspection pigs) based on ultrasonic imaging are used in underground pipelines, especially in natural gas pipelines. A coupling fluid must be present between the sensors of the inspection device and the pipe wall, which has at least approximately an acoustic impedance similar to that of steel.
A gas-filled gap between the sensor and the inner wall of the pipe would mean that the ultrasonic signal would largely be reflected on the pipe wall and would not be coupled into the wall material for testing. The inspection device must therefore move in a coupling fluid during the inspection. The use of water, glycol or a similar liquid as a coupling fluid is known from practice. In order to move in a pipe that is otherwise filled with air or gas, the required body of liquid or "batch" is enclosed between pigs. The batch can extend over several hundred meters along the pipe axis and is driven by the pressure difference imposed by the gas. The inspection device or pig lies roughly in the middle of the batch and moves with it. Depending on the height profile of the pipeline to be inspected, the pigs and batches can reach very high speeds in some areas with this mode of operation, which affects the quality of the measurement data and thus the entire test.
In mountainous terrain, batches of limited length made of water or glycol can usually not be used for ultrasonic pigging, as batch speeds can occur locally that exceed the permissible value given by the properties of the measurement method by a factor of 10 or more. In order to be able to carry out inspections here, pipeline sections are now completely filled with the coupling fluid - usually water - in the course of the inspection. This procedure requires an enormous logistical effort and leads to very high testing costs, especially with large pipe cross-sections.
The object of the invention is accordingly to improve a method of the type mentioned at the beginning in such a way that the disadvantages of the prior art are avoided.
This object is achieved by a method according to claim 1.
The invention is characterized in that the coupling fluid is a dilatant fluid and that the speed of the inspection device can be regulated by means of the coupling fluid, so that the speed of the inspection device does not exceed a predetermined value during the inspection of the pipeline.
In other words, the object is achieved by using a dilatant fluid as the coupling fluid in a method for testing a pipeline by means of ultrasound, an inspection device with an ultrasonic sensor moving through the pipeline and a coupling fluid being located between the inspection device and the inner wall of the pipeline.
The coupling fluid has the function of ensuring that the ultrasonic signal from the inspection device enters the pipe wall is coupled, according to the invention to regulate the additional function that the speed of the inspection device does not exceed a predetermined value. The specified value is usually the maximum speed up to which ultrasonic measurements are possible without impairment.
The speed of the inspection device is regulated so that the pipeline can be checked using ultrasound regardless of the route and height profile of the underground pipeline.
The rigid inspection device or inspection pig is located inside the pipeline. The power transmission between the two bodies takes place not only via the coupling fluid, but also through direct contact. The volume occupied by the coupling fluid moves relative to the pipeline during pigging. The invention is based on the knowledge that the property of the coupling fluid can be used to limit the maximum speed of the inspection device or the batch, in that the frictional forces counteract the acceleration due to gravity.
The use of a dilatant coupling fluid allows testing with comparatively short batches due to the associated increasing braking effect with increasing batch speed, which leads to a considerable reduction in costs.
In addition to the pressures of the gas in front of and behind the batch and the force of gravity, frictional forces influence the acceleration to which the batch is exposed. The forces from the sliding friction between the inspection device and the pipe wall can be viewed as independent of the batch speed. The frictional forces between the coupling fluid and the pipe wall, on the other hand, increase with increasing speed, so that when the batch is accelerated, which is caused by an imposed pressure difference or gravity, there is a negative feedback due to friction effects and a quasi-steady state can arise, which is caused by a finite pig speed is marked.
The exponent n is dimensionless. The unit of Ostwald's constant depends on the numerical value of n.
The mechanical properties of the ditative fluid can be selected quantitatively in a targeted manner in order to ensure that the speed of the inspection device does not exceed a given value during the inspection.
For each differential pressure between the beginning or the front of the batch and its end and each line gradient, there is a shear stress that leads to an equilibrium of forces and thus a stable batch speed. In the coupling fluids known from the prior art, such as water or glycol, n = 1. By using a dilatant coupling fluid with a higher exponent n according to the invention, the same shear stresses can be achieved even with lower speed gradients du / dr and thus lower speeds u. The speed of the inspection device is regulated so that the maximum speed of the inspection device, up to which ultrasonic measurements are possible, is not exceeded.
The invention offers the possibility of choosing a suitable dilatant fluid depending on the application.
The exponent n is preferably at least 1.2, preferably at least 1.6. Furthermore, the exponent n is preferably less than 5.0, preferably less than 3.0.
Since the coupling fluid always adheres to the pipe wall and the so-called adhesion condition u = 0 applies there, the velocity gradient du / dr on the wall increases with increased fluid flow and thus both the wall shear stress τ and the frictional force.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the coupling fluid is enclosed between at least one first separating pig and at least one second separating pig, the first separating pig being upstream and the second separating pig being located downstream of the inspection device.
The invention is explained below using an exemplary embodiment.

The inspection device is inserted into the pipeline to be tested. The test can be carried out during normal transport operation of the pipeline. Alternatively, the pipeline can be filled with air or another gas. The inspection device moves through the pipeline as a result of a pressure difference. A coupling fluid is located between the inspection device and the inner wall of the pipeline. The coupling fluid is enclosed between at least one first separating pig and at least one second separating pig, the first separating pig being located upstream and the second separating pig being located downstream of the inspection device. A dilatant fluid is used as the coupling fluid, the shear stress τ being calculated using formula (1). The exponent n is at least 1.2, preferably at least 1.6. Furthermore, the exponent n is less than 5.0, preferably less than 3.0.

For example, when using water as the coupling fluid, maximum speeds of the inspection device of 20 to 30 m / s were measured. The maximum speed can be reduced to, for example, 5 m / s to 1 m / s, depending on the dilatant fluid used as the coupling fluid.
The total pigging time can even decrease under certain conditions despite the lower top speed, as less pressure has to be built up behind the batch in order to achieve a specified speed. While the latter leads to lower drive costs, the automatic reduction of the top speed allows a considerably simpler process control in many cases.
