Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing a graphite bipolar plate for a fuel cell, which contains a channel structure with over a wide areas closed cross section for guiding a fluid. A channel structure with a closed cross-section can be referred to in the broadest sense as a system with one or more tubes or bores extending in the bipolar plate, it being expressly understood that the channel structure should only partially have a closed cross-section, so that it may well Portions of the channel structure with an open cross-section, in which the respective channel section is thus in the manner of a channel, can give.
Bipolar plates of PEM fuel cells are usually made of metallic materials; because of their high temperature resistance and good chemical resistance but also bipolar plates made of graphite or a graphite compound with a carbon-containing binder in particular in the form of a high-temperature polymer, such as a phenolic resin, developed. As is known, in bipolar plates there is a channel structure for the guidance of the reactants reacting with one another in the fuel cell and thus cavities which make the production of a bipolar plate more difficult. For example, it is envisaged to join the bipolar plate together from an upper half and a lower half, each half having an integrated "half" or split channel structure. each of which has an open cross-section by itself is produced by injection molding. However, the subsequent tight joining of these two halves to form the closed cross sections of the channel structure is extremely complicated.
The object of the present invention is to provide a comparatively more advantageous manufacturing method for a graphite bipolar plate of a fuel cell, which contains a channel structure with a closed cross section over a wide area for guiding a fluid.
The solution to this problem is to press-mold graphite powder and a carbonaceous binder, followed by thermal treatment, such as annealing, of the formed workpiece, d. H. the bipolar plate, wherein the channel structure is represented by an introduced lost mold core.
The use of lost mandrels is particularly known in the manufacture of workpieces by casting. Also known is the so-called lost-foam technique, according to which lost mandrels are made in a polymer foam material which is thermally removed from the workpiece toward the end of the manufacturing process of the respective workpiece. Preferably, such a lost-foam method is also proposed herein, d. H. In a particularly economical manner, in the short term and in particular without any risk of damaging the bipolar plate, the lost mold core made of a polymer and preferably formed by polymer foam from the compression-molded bipolar plate in a thermal manner, ie. H. be removed by melting the mold core to the gaseous state with heat and "evaporation" of the mold core forming material. In the context of a functional association, it is particularly advantageous if the thermal removal of the mandrel is carried out together with the thermal decomposition (= "treating") of the binder of the shaped workpiece, namely the abovementioned annealing, which is usually carried out is converted to carbon remaining in the workpiece to be machined while releasing volatile components of the binder. Thus, the thermal removal of the lost mandrel can be performed simultaneously with a heat treatment process to be performed anyway, in which desired properties of the bipolar plate are adjusted, and in particular together with the already mentioned solidification of the bipolar plate by pyrolytic decomposition of both the binder, which causes a solidification of the bipolar plate , as well as the thermal decomposition of the lost mold core.
The lost mold core, the shape of which corresponds to the channel structure or the cavities in the bipolar plate which form closed channels in cross-section over a wide area, can be produced by punching out of a given solid structure or by casting; Alternatively, the lost mold core can be produced by printing, in particular, on a support remaining in the bipolar plate when the mold core is removed, which is preferably formed by a graphite foil.
With such a mold core, a graphite bipolar plate can then be produced, for example, as follows: First, graphite and a carbonaceous binder, the former in powder form and the latter, for example in the form of phenolic resin granules, cooled to the so-called compound mixed. A first portion of this mixture / compound is cooled to a lower mold, d. H. filled and preformed in a first step preferably without heat and without fixation of the compound - but optionally also with heat and ground fixation - by closing the tool with a corresponding upper mold under pressure to a lower half of the bipolar plate, d. H. press-formed. On top of this preformed lower half of the bipolar plate, the prefabricated so-called lost but still complete mold core is placed exactly placed in the current state and thus placed in the lower mold, whereupon filled the second part of the powdery mixture of graphite and phenolic resin (= compound) and thus the mold core is covered. Then, the bipolar plate (as a workpiece to be molded) is pressed into shape with another corresponding upper mold and thereby fixed by pressure and heat, whereby a cross-linking of the phenolic resin takes place.
In the next process step, this preformed and still the mold core containing bipolar plate is removed from the mold and a thermal process (= thermal treatment), preferably supplied without supply of oxygen, in which both the phenolic resin and the lost mold core are decomposed. The volatile decomposition products are deposited and the further process steps are carried out as usual in the prior art of press-forming and subsequent annealing to solidify carbon components.
A particular advantage of the production process according to the invention is that it can be carried out in several stages, ie. H. the bipolar plate can be preformed in several successive steps, wherein different lost cores are successively introduced in different steps. Deviating from the preceding description, a first mold core is then placed on the preformed lower half of the bipolar plate, which is then covered with a portion of the mixture of graphite powder and phenolic resin granules, after which a further preforming is carried out by at least slight compression. On top of this created "intermediate structure" another lost mandrel can be placed, which is then covered with the rest of the mixture of graphite powder and phenolic resin granules. Thereafter, the already described compression molding with heat, wherein a crosslinking of the phenolic resin takes place, and then the exemplified pyrolytic annealing with decomposition of the phenolic resin and the (now both or possibly more) lost shaped body.
With the method presented here, which in the context of the present disclosure can also be designed differently from the method steps last described in detail by way of example, a bipolar plate is not only easier to produce than in the known state of the art, but also of higher quality. In particular, no leaks - as in the joining of two prefabricated plate halves - to be feared.
