Abstract
The present invention relates to a honeycomb body (1) made of ceramic material with walls (10) separated from each other by channels (11) and a front (2) and a rear (3) end face and a lateral surface (4), which of a fluid in one Flow direction (S) from the front (2) to the rear (3) end face is flowed through, the honeycomb body (1) in at least a first portion (5) is electrically less conductive than in at least a second portion (6), wherein the Subareas (5, 6) in the flow direction (S) are behind each other. For producing such a honeycomb body (4), a method is used in which a honeycomb body (4) is produced by extruding electrically poorly conductive ceramic material, wherein the honeycomb body (4) after extrusion in at least a second portion (6; is treated, that the electrical conductivity in this second portion (6; 7) is increased, while it remains unchanged in at least a first portion (5), wherein the portions (5, 6; 7) in the flow direction (S) are behind one another. The preferred field of application of the invention is the exhaust gas purification of internal combustion engines, especially in motor vehicles. Exhaust gas purification systems generally contain not only an electrically heatable disc, but more honeycomb body as a particle filter and / or as a catalytic converter with a catalytically active coating. The present invention can therefore provide two components simultaneously, namely an electrically heatable disc and an integrally associated honeycomb body whose dimensions, in particular its axial length is independent of the axial length of the heated disc selectable.
Description
The present invention relates to the field of electrically heatable honeycomb bodies for use in gas cleaning devices, in particular for exhaust systems of internal combustion engines.
It is known to equip cleaning systems for gases with honeycomb bodies through which gases can flow, which are coated with catalytically active material and / or are formed as filters. It is also known to use electrically heatable honeycomb body, either to achieve a temperature required for catalytic conversion processes or a desorption faster, or to ignite accumulated soot particles and / or to accelerate their implementation.
All extruded electrically heatable honeycomb bodies have in common that in principle only relatively thin slices are required for typical applications, which in turn are relatively unstable through slots and the materials used, so that the installation in a housing and the combination with other honeycomb bodies a relatively large effort requires and the durability is limited under thermal cycling and mechanical loads.
The object of the present invention is to provide an extruded honeycomb body which is electrically heatable in a subregion and easy to manufacture and mechanically stable.
To solve this problem is a honeycomb body according to
A honeycomb body according to the invention of substantially ceramic material with channels separated from one another by walls and a front and a rear end side and a lateral surface, which can be flowed through by a fluid in a flow direction from the front to the rear end, is characterized in that the honeycomb body in at least a first portion is less electrically conductive than in at least a second portion, the portions are in the flow direction behind the other. This arrangement in the flow direction one behind the other makes it possible, in particular, to provide a relatively short second partial region in the flow direction, which would not be mechanically stable as a single disc, but is just as stable in connection with the first partial region as a conventional ceramic honeycomb body. In this case, the electrical conductivity in the second subregion does not have to be distributed homogeneously, but may also be radially different in this subregion, for example.
In the second subregion, at least one electrically conductive current path is preferably defined, which connects at least two contact regions to one another, the contact regions being arranged on an end face and / or the lateral surface of the honeycomb body. In this way, all known in the prior art configurations, as previously used in disk-shaped heatable honeycomb bodies, realize. However, the scope for more complicated current paths or several parallel-connected current paths becomes larger because virtually no consideration has to be taken of the mechanical stability of the second sub-region. This second partial area is virtually monolithic with the first partial area, so that even a larger number of slots or very narrow current paths do not lead to mechanical problems.
The first subrange does not affect the current distribution because of its lower electrical conductivity. In general, the material of the first portion will have the properties of an electrical insulator.
The mechanical stability of the honeycomb body makes it possible to provide in the second subregion a plurality of electrically conductive current paths, which are preferably each formed with a same electrical resistance. On In this way, a large cross-sectional area can be heated very uniformly, which can not be ensured mechanically stable in the case of complicatedly shaped long current paths, which for example extend meandering over a cross-sectional area, in known designs. On the other hand, it is also possible to provide current paths with different electrical resistance in order to heat different cross-sectional areas differently.
Particularly preferably, the electrically conductive portion and thus all conductive current paths are arranged in the region of one of the end sides of the honeycomb body, in particular in the region of the front end side. In typical arrangements for cleaning exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, especially in motor vehicles, this is the most commonly used design, because the regions of the honeycomb body located further downstream in the flow direction can be heated most easily by means of a heatable front end face.
A honeycomb body according to the invention is preferably initially produced everywhere from a ceramic material with little electrical conductivity, wherein the electrically more conductive partial region is then modified by adding electrically conductive material in its electrical properties. There are various ways to increase the electrical conductivity in a subregion. Since ceramic material, in particular extruded ceramic material, is relatively porous to honeycomb bodies, metallic material can be immersed, for example, by immersion in a melt or dissolved metal solution, thereby incorporating metallic material into the immersed areas of the honeycomb body. Steaming, sputtering or the frontal printing of metallic material is also possible.
Particularly preferably, the electrically conductive current paths can be formed as protruding from the front side raised parts. The second portion is then provided with a relief-like structure in which the protruding mountains as structures form the electrically conductive current path, while the valleys or slots of the electrical insulation serve. Depending on the chosen method of production, either the electrical conductivity in the second partial region can be increased first and then the structure can be worked out or vice versa.
In principle, it is possible according to the invention to form two or more electrically conductive subregions, for example on both end faces of a honeycomb body, but it is preferred to arrange all current paths as raised current paths only on one end side of the honeycomb body.
The present invention also relates to a method for producing a honeycomb body made of ceramic material with channels separated by walls and a front and a rear end side and a lateral surface, which is flowed through by a fluid in a flow direction from the front to the rear end, wherein the honeycomb body is produced by extruding electrically poorly conductive ceramic material. Under electrically poorly conductive material is understood here as typical ceramic material such as cordierite, which can be considered practically as an electrical insulator. According to the invention, an extruded honeycomb body is left untreated after extrusion in at least one first subarea, while it is treated in a second subarea in such a way that the electrical conductivity in this second subarea is increased, wherein the subareas lie one behind the other in the flow direction. In this context, an increase in the electrical conductivity is understood to mean that the second subregion is to become electrically highly conductive, which means in particular that the conductivity of the walls in this subregion reaches values similar to those of honeycomb bodies produced from metal sheets or sintered metal.
This can preferably be achieved according to the invention by treating the second subarea by means of a dipping process, in particular by submerging this subarea in a melt or solution of a metal or a metal alloy. The porosity present after extrusion leads to absorption of metal from a melt or solution, whereby the electrical conductivity can be significantly increased. It depends on the chosen method, whether the dipping process before or after a possible burning process of the extruded honeycomb body is more advantageous.
Preferably, the honeycomb body is immersed in a dipping bath up to a predetermined height in order to determine the height, that is to say the axial extent of the second partial area, and to treat this partial area uniformly. The duration of the immersion process, the temperature and / or the concentration of the immersion bath are chosen so that the desired electrical conductivity is established.
Alternatively, according to another embodiment of the invention, the electrical conductivity of the second portion of the honeycomb body may be determined by a sputtering method or a spraying method for applying an electrical material be enlarged. It is particularly advantageous in this case if the method is carried out before firing an extruded ceramic honeycomb body, because then a uniform penetration of the applied metallic layer is achieved.
Under certain circumstances, a homogeneous, electrically conductive second subarea may have a resistance that is unsuitable for electrical heating, namely a resistance that is too low. In order nevertheless to achieve a uniform heating of the entire area, the invention provides various possibilities for dividing the second subarea electrically by separating areas, so that at least one current path, preferably a plurality of current paths with suitable electrical resistance results. The separation areas are ensured according to an embodiment of the invention by preventing the increase in the electrical conductivity in these areas, which is achieved for example by a mask on an end face of the honeycomb body or by a protective order.
In another embodiment, before or after the treatment to increase the electrical conductivity at one or both end faces material is removed, preferably by milling, that at least one raised electrically conductive current path is formed or formed after the treatment. By milling or other material-removing process arise slit-shaped or more extensive separation areas, which act electrically insulating. In this way, it is possible to produce designs in which the second electrically highly conductive partial region has structures similar to those of heatable honeycomb bodies produced from metal sheets or extruded from metallic material. The findings on current distribution and contacting, which are extensively available in the prior art, can be applied in the same way for the electrically conductive sub-regions produced according to the invention.
