Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a material made of polypropylene and biobased polymer fibers. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing a product or semi-finished product formed from such a material.
In industrial practice, plastics are currently mainly synthesized from petrochemical raw materials. For some years, plastics from renewable raw materials have also been proposed as an alternative. On the one hand, the interest in these new developments is on an increasing environmental awareness, on the other hand there is also the hope to obtain products with advantageous properties for special applications. The question of the future disposal of plastics and the renewable source of raw materials are also becoming increasingly important. Suitable renewable raw materials are, for example, carbohydrates such as sugar, cellulose and starch as well as vegetable proteins or vegetable oils.
The ecological and economic advantages of natural fiber reinforced plastics are, among other things, the reasons for the sustainable growth of this group of materials. Applications are found, for example, when conventional filled polypropylene derivatives can not meet the required product requirements, such as energy absorption in the event of a crash, and the significantly more favorable properties but also higher costs of the more suitable engineering thermoplastics make the components too expensive.
The economic aspect as well as the low density, the good mechanical and acoustic properties, processing properties, good crash management (toughness, no splinter), the favorable life cycle assessment, the advantages over occupational health advantages and the positive effects for European agriculture lead to a continuous growth of the Use of natural fiber materials in the automotive industry.
Targeted material developments based on polypropylene with cellulose-based natural fibers such as flax, viscose or wood fiber molding material offer an efficient alternative to engineering plastics. Injection-grade cellulosic fiber-polypropylene materials having a fiber content of about 30% are known in practice.

In order to achieve a high impact strength of fiber-reinforced compounds, the fibers used must have a particularly high length / diameter ratio. However, it has proven to be disadvantageous in practice that the use of long fibers and the high impact strength achievable thereby is accompanied by a deterioration in the melt flow properties. This complicates the filling of complex component geometries. By using short fibers, however, the desired material strength or toughness is reduced.
Against this background, the invention has the object to realize a high impact resistance of the material at the same time good melt flow properties. Furthermore, a method for producing such a material is to be provided.
The first object is achieved with a material according to the features of claim 1. The subclaims relate to particularly expedient developments of the invention.
Thus, according to the invention, a material is provided in which the bio-based polymer fibers have an increased first portion of long fibers and an increased second portion of short fibers compared to a Gaussian normal distribution. This optimizes in a surprisingly simple manner both in terms of toughness and in terms of melt flowability Properties of the material thus produced realized. Due to the fiber fraction mixture, the melt flow properties are considerably less affected than is the case with a normally distributed, normally distributed Gaussian normal distribution function fiber mixture with a comparable average fiber length.
Preferably, a maximum is associated with each of the first portion of long fibers and the second portion of short fibers in accordance with a bimodal or multimodal distribution function. The increased proportion of long fibers leads to the desired improvement of the toughness performance. A significant difference compared to the prior art is thus the use of a fiber fraction with a very broad distribution function, a bimodal distribution or a multimodal distribution of the fiber fraction as a reinforcing component in the material of polypropylene and bio-based polymer fibers. The component filling can be significantly optimized in this way.
It is particularly advantageous if the long fibers have a fiber length of greater than 300 to 500 microns and the short fibers have a fiber length of less than 150 to 200 microns. It has been found that the short fibers are present substantially as a filler in the matrix for polypropylene and stiffen it, but without affecting its fluidity too strong, while the long fibers the u. a. also dependent on the fiber matrix adhesion, so-called critical fiber length, from which the applied force in the composite material can be largely or completely absorbed by the fiber.
Another, also particularly promising variant of the material is achieved in that the long and / or short fibers have a non-circular cross-sectional shape, in particular so for example oval cross-sectional shapes, so as to improve the application of force. It has been found that in particular fibers with different cross-sectional shapes or those fibers whose cross-sectional shapes vary along their longitudinal axis and / or additionally have rough fiber surfaces are optimal in terms of their suitability for absorbing or transmitting forces.
The bio-based polymer fibers could be of different origin in the field of renewable raw materials. Particularly promising have already proven such bio-based polymer fibers, which have as a substantial proportion of cellulose material. As a result, at the same time optimized surface properties of the material, for example a low degree of gloss, increased scratch resistance and a reduced specific weight are realized.
The second object is achieved according to the invention by a method for producing a product based on polypropylene and bio-based polymer fibers by adding to the bio-based polymer fibers, compared to a Gaussian normal distribution, an increased first portion of long fibers and an increased second portion of short fibers especially the first portion of long fibers and the second portion of short fibers corresponding to a bimodal or multimodal distribution function is assigned a maximum in each case. In this case, the long fibers, in particular having a small cross-sectional area, are used, for example, for producing long-fiber-reinforced granules by means of a pultrusion process to increase the impact resistance, while the use of the short fibers, which may also have a powdery nature, only marginally limits the increase in melt flowability in the compounding process. At the same time, the bio-based content and rigidity are increased in a low-cost manner. In this case, an optimum with respect to the desired high toughness and rigidity on the one hand and the flow properties on the other hand is achieved.
The inventive method is suitable for the production of the product by means of a molding process. On the other hand, it proves particularly advantageous if the product is produced by injection molding. As a result, a high degree of design freedom is achieved at the same time extensive integration options. In addition, there is a slight rework.
The compressibility of cellulose fibers improves the absolute mechanical properties and reduces the water absorption of the fibers.
To further clarify its basic principle, one of them is shown in the drawing and will be described below. This shows in
