Description
The present invention relates to a cyanide-free, pyrophosphate-containing electrolyte and a method for the electrolytic deposition of a ternary alloy of the elements copper, tin and zinc. The electrolyte or the method is characterized by the fact that in addition to zinc (II) ions and stannate anions, copper ions are also present in the electrolyte used. The copper and zinc ions are in a certain molar ratio to each other and to the pyrophosphate anions.
They are used, inter alia, as a substitute for nickel-containing finishing layers and are applied inexpensively, for example in galvanic drum or frame coating method to corresponding substrates
In the production of brass and bronze layers for the electronics industry, the solderability of the resulting layer and optionally its mechanical adhesive strength are the decisive properties of the layer to be produced. The appearance of the layers is generally less significant than their functionality for use in this area. For the production of bronze or brass layers on consumer goods, however, the decorative effect in addition to the long shelf life of the layer with unchanged as possible appearance of the essential target parameters.
For the production of brass or bronze layers - in addition to the conventional methods using cyanide-containing and thus highly toxic, alkaline baths - various galvanic methods are known, which assign themselves according to the composition of their electrolytes usually one of two observed in the prior art main groups Let: Process using organo-sulfonic acid-based electrolytes or processes using diphosphoric acid (pyrophosphoric acid) based baths.

A cyanide-free, pyrophosphate-containing electrolyte for depositing ternary copper-zinc-tin alloys is described in Thin Solid Films, 517 (2009) 2511-2514. Here, an unspecified layer is deposited from an alkaline electrolyte with the metals copper in the oxidation state +2, zinc in the oxidation state +2 and tin in the oxidation state +4. The electrolyte described here should contain a 10-fold excess of tin and lead only to copper-poor deposits.

The electrolyte described for the deposition of the ternary alloy of copper, tin and zinc has in common that they are only subordinate able to deposit a correspondingly desired ternary alloy composition, if not z. B. special additional additives are added to the electrolyte or extremely high tin IV concentrations in the electrolyte. The resulting added complexity makes the electrolytes unattractive in manufacturing and processing.
It was therefore an object of the present invention to provide an electrolyte and a corresponding method for depositing a ternary alloy of copper, tin and zinc, which is able to accomplish the intended deposition with a preferred stoichiometry as optimally as possible. The electrolyte should be as simple as possible. The process and the electrolyte according to the invention should furthermore be superior to the processes and electrolytes known from the prior art from an ecological and economical point of view.
These and other tasks which are obvious to a person skilled in the art will be solved by an electrolyte having the features of claim 1 and by a corresponding method according to claim 8. Preferred embodiments of the respective invention are to be taken from the dependent claims dependent on these claims.
For the cyanide-free electrolyte, it is advantageous if it has a certain concentration of stabilizers. This task can be exercised by the pyrophosphate anions present in the electrolyte alone. The skilled person, however, is free to add further stabilizers in the electrolyte. The concentration of pyrophosphate anions can be set as desired by the person skilled in the art within the limits given above and, as stated, depends on the amount of copper or zinc ions used. For this task, he will orientate himself on the one hand to create an optimal alloy composition and, on the other hand, to use as few starting materials as possible for the deposition. The preferred range for the molar ratio of Pyrophosphate anions to the sum of Cu / Zn ions should therefore be between 1: 1.6 and 4: 1. Particularly preferred is a range between 1: 1.4 and 2: 1 in this context.
According to the invention, the metals of copper and of zinc are in ionic dissolved form in the present electrolyte. The copper can be added to the electrolyte in the form of cuprous salts or in the form of divalent copper salts or mixtures thereof. Zinc will be in the form of the divalent ions in the electrolyte. The molar ratio of copper to zinc ions results in a preferred range being between 2: 1 and 1: 3. Most preferably, the value is about 1: 1-1: 2. The tin is called Stannatsalz d. H. added in the 4-valent form to the electrolyte. Such stannate salts are well known to those skilled in the art. In particular, here come z. As the sodium stannate and potassium stannate. Although the ratios of the concentrations of copper and zinc ions to one another and the sum of these two ions to form pyrophosphate anions decisively determine the composition of the deposited alloy. It is of course also necessary that the tin used is in a certain ratio to the copper and zinc ions. The molar ratio of stannate salt used to the sum of copper and zinc ions should be between 1: 1-6: 1, preferably between 1.5: 1-4: 1 and more preferably between 2: 1 and 3: 1.
With regard to the metals to be deposited copper and zinc, which are as stated in ionic dissolved form present in the electrolyte, and the tin, which is dissolved as stannate, the concentration ranges of the metals in the electrolyte can be selected by the expert. It has proved to be advantageous if the ion concentration of the copper in the range 0.1 to 10 g / l electrolyte, the concentration of tin in the range 0.5 to 20 g / l electrolyte and the ion concentration of zinc in the range 0.2 to 20 g / l electrolyte is. More preferably, the concentration of copper is 0.3-5 g / l, more preferably 0.5-1.0 g / l. More preferably, the concentration of zinc is 0.3-10 g / L, more preferably 0.5-2.0 g / L. More preferably, the concentration of tin is 2-15 g / l, most preferably 3.5-10 g / l. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, an electrolyte is used by:
Copper in a concentration of 0.5-1 g / l,
Zinc in a concentration of 0,5-2 g / l,
Tin in a concentration of 3.5-7.5 g / l, and
each based on the metal, are present.
As already indicated, the copper and zinc ions are dissolved in the electrolyte. As water-soluble compounds of these metals to be deposited under the given ambient conditions, those selected from the group of pyrophosphates, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfites, sulfates, phosphates, nitrites, nitrates, halides, hydroxides, oxide hydroxides, oxides or combinations thereof can be used. Preferably, carbonate, bicarbonates, sulfates or pyrophosphates are used. Very particularly preferred is the addition of sulfates in this context.
The electrolyte is operated in a slightly acidic to strongly alkaline range. Preferably, the pH of the electrolyte is between 6 and 13, more preferably between 7.5 and 12, and most preferably between 8 and 11.5. The pH of the electrolyte according to the invention is very preferably about 11. The person skilled in the art knows how to adjust such pH values in the electrolyte with appropriate buffer substances. Preferred buffer substances are those salts of weak organic or inorganic acids selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, citric acid.
Besonders bevorzugt sind solche Additive ausgewählt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus Oxalsäure, Weinsäure, Zitronensäure oder deren SalzeThe electrolyte may further additives (brighteners, wetting agents,) are added, which are selected from the group consisting of mono- and dicarboxylic acids, alkanesulfonic acids, betaines and aromatic nitro compounds. Such additives are well known for the present type of baths, in particular in the field of brass or bronze deposition. Reference is made to the literature with regard to the amount and the starting materials. Particular preference is given to those additives selected from the group consisting of oxalic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid or salts thereof
Likewise provided by the present invention is a process for the electrolytic deposition of Cu-Zn-Sn alloy layers, in which the substrate to be coated is immersed as a cathode in an electrolyte according to the invention and a current flow is established between the anode and the cathode. It goes without saying that the preferred embodiments for the electrolyte are also considered to be preferred for the process.
It is advantageous if in the deposited ternary alloy, the copper content between 38 and 44 wt .-%, the tin content between 34 and 42 wt .-% and the zinc content between 16 and 26 wt .-% is. Preference is given to alloys having 39-42% by weight of Cu, most preferably by 40-41% by weight. Further preferred are alloys with 19-23 wt .-% Zn, most preferably by 21 wt .-%. Also preferred are alloys with 36-40 wt .-% Sn, most preferably by 38 wt .-%. In sum, the alloy components should give 100 wt .-%. The deposited alloy should have a thickness of 0.4-5 .mu.m, preferably 0.5-3 .mu.m, and most preferably 1-2 .mu.m.
It should be noted that the alloy composition may also change with the temperature of the electrolysis. The electrolysis is therefore carried out in a range between 20 and 90 ° C, preferably 30 to 60 ° C and most preferably at about 45 ° C.
It may also be that the composition of the ternary alloy of copper, tin and zinc changes with the set current density during the electrolysis. Advantageously, a current density is set which is in the range 0.1 to 5 amperes per square decimeter. Preferably, the current density is 0.2 to 1.0 ampere per square decimeter, most preferably 0.3 to 0.8 ampere per square decimeter.
As the anode, any suitable electrode for this purpose can be used. Preferably, insoluble anodes (eg, platinized titanium anodes or mixed metal oxide ores) can be used. Advantageously in this context also soluble anodes are selected from a material selected from the group consisting of electrolytic copper, phosphorus-containing copper, tin, tin-copper alloy, zinc-copper alloy and zinc-tin-copper alloy or combinations of these anodes can be used.

Accordingly, the present invention likewise provides a process for producing a thin-film solar cell comprising a p-type absorption layer based on a Cu x Zn y Sn z S a Se b compound, where x = 1.5-2.5, y = 0, 9-1.5, z = 0.5-1.1, a = 0-4.2 and b = 0-4.2 and where x + y + z and a + b are each about 4 (± 0 , 2), wherein a Cu x Zn y Sn z alloy is prepared by a process according to the invention and this layer is then reacted with sulfur, a sulfur and / or a selenium compound in such a way that the corresponding compound is formed.
Preferably, the alloy composition obtained by electrolysis approaches as closely as possible to one which corresponds to the alloy base in the material kesterite (Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 ). Most preferably, the layer produced by the process according to the invention consists of a composition which approximates the formula Cu 2 ZnSn. From this, the desired compound Cu 2 ZnSn (SeS) 4 (CZTS) can then be prepared by appropriate methods as discussed in the literature by the action of sulfur, selenium and / or corresponding compounds.
It has not been apparent from the background of the prior art that a method as embodied herein makes it possible to easily prepare corresponding ternary alloy compositions by electrolytic deposition. In particular, it is surprising that this should be due to the presence of certain ratios of copper and zinc ions to Pyrophosphatanionen and the ratio of copper and zinc ions to each other, if Sn is present as Sn4 +. In contrast, it appears to be particularly advantageous that it is obviously possible by the simple setting of the corresponding ratios to adjust the deposited alloy composition advantageous. This was not to be expected in light of the known state of the art.
