Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for the hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, wherein biomass is converted with water and at least one catalyst in a pressure vessel by increasing the temperature and / or pressure in substances such as coal, oil and / or the like related substances.
The term biomass covers for the purposes of the present invention all living, act and / or decomposed organisms. In addition to plants, these include, in particular, waste and / or residual wood, straw, grass, manure, leaves, sewage sludge and / or organic household waste. The biomass can be used in different compositions, qualities, sizes and / or the like, as needed and desired conversion product.
So far, in the hydrothermal carbonization, a pressure vessel with biomass consisting essentially of plant products, water and a small amount of a catalyst, in particular citric acid filled. Subsequently, the pressure vessel is closed and performed under temperature and pressure increase the conversion or implementation of the biomass. The resulting reaction is exothermic, which means that energy is released in the form of heat and / or light. The duration of this conversion process depends on the desired state of the conversion product and has hitherto been, for example, for the conversion of biomass into coal in a time range of about 12 hours. The pressure vessel is maintained at a temperature of about 180 degrees Celsius to about 250 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, the pressure vessel is opened and the conversion product taken from the pressure vessel. In a conversion of biomass into coal, for example, small on, floating in or under the water coal particles are removed as a conversion product to the pressure vessel.
A disadvantage of the previously known hydrothermal carbonization is in addition to the relatively rumors temporal duration of the conversion process in particular the discontinuous process, in which a pressure vessel is first filled, the filled pressure vessel is then pressure-tight, then run in the pressure vessel, the conversion reactions, the pressure vessel is opened thereafter and finally the opened pressure vessel is emptied or the conversion product is removed from the pressure vessel. In addition, both the mechanical and / or plant technical effort as well as the operating and personnel costs are so far significant. With the previous discontinuous process management, therefore, an effective and cheaper industrial use of the hydrothermal carbonization for substance extraction is not feasible.
The object of the present invention, in view of the state of the art, is to improve the hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, in particular with regard to the duration of the conversion process and with regard to the manner in which the process is conducted.
For technical solution of this object is achieved with the present invention, a method and apparatus for the hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, wherein biomass with water and at least one catalyst in several series or parallel pressure vessels by temperature and / or pressure increase in substances such as coal, oil and / or the like related substances is proposed proposed, which is characterized in that the previously known and described above method of hydrothermal carbonization is divided into several process sections in time. Each of these process sections essentially consists of a pressure vessel with at least one controllable inlet opening and at least one controllable outlet opening. Biomass, water and / or at least one catalyst are fed via the at least one controllable inlet opening; the temperature and / or pressure conditions in the pressure vessel are controlled in such a way that the contents of biomass, water and catalyst or catalysts supplied to the pressure vessel are in the or is transported through the pressure vessel, wherein biomass, water and catalyst or catalysts react with each other and at least one reaction product is removed as a filling material via the at least one controllable outlet opening.
The inventive design advantageously a quasi-continuous process management is realized. The inventive design of the pressure vessel as a process chain several consecutively cascaded arranged and interconnected pressure vessel can be realized. Overall, a quasi-continuous process management is thus advantageously made possible, which is particularly advantageous against the background of an effective and inexpensive industrial use of the hydrothermal material recovery. The first stage of the process chain advantageously consists of a preheating container, which is not necessarily designed as a pressure vessel. The biomass is continuously transported to the preheating tank. Advantageously, the heating of the biomass is carried out to a preheating temperature of about 50 to 100 degrees Celsius in the continuous filling device. The continuous supply of biomass takes place in an advantageously heated Vorwärmbehälter. When the filling level is reached, the continuous feed is briefly interrupted and the preheating container is emptied into the first pressure vessel of the process chain.
The process according to the invention advantageously permits a continuous supply of biomass, water and / or at least one catalyst. Alternatively and / or additionally, the filling of the preheating container can also take place in one or as a batch process. The supply of biomass, water and / or at least one catalyst for filling the pressure vessel can be carried out in parallel, so that biomass, water and / or catalyst are fed individually. Accordingly, a separate supply of biomass, a separate supply of water and / or a separate supply of catalyst are provided. Advantageously, the mixing ratio of the components biomass, water and / or at least one catalyst is carried out via a corresponding control system.
Advantageously, located in the first pressure vessel of the process chain, a stirring or kneading, which accelerates the heat transfer from the advantageously heated container wall to Befüllgut (biomass).
A further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the temperature and / or pressure conditions in the pressure vessel are controlled via the at least one controllable inlet opening and / or the at least one controllable outlet opening, preferably via at least one control device.
Advantageously, the pressure vessels are heated. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the pressure vessel is at least partially arranged in a container which can be filled with at least one heat transfer medium, preferably oil, or is flowed around by it and the heating of the pressure vessel is controlled via the temperature of the at least one heat transfer medium in the container. By a corresponding arrangement according to the invention can be ensured in a simple manner that the entire process takes place at a uniform or unified temperature. Furthermore, as part of the process flow at the respective points in the pipeline resulting heat energy (reactor heat) is dissipated directly and thus supplied to areas where the conversion process has already taken place or has progressed further. Advantageously, in particular an overheating is prevented.
After the biomass has been heated in the first pressure vessel to the required reaction temperature and optionally a first reaction has taken place, the biomass is transferred to the next pressure vessel of the process chain. Advantageously, for this purpose, the next pressure vessel is arranged vertically below the first or previous pressure vessel of the process sections and coupled by means of a shut-off device. After a time to be set, preferably 1 to 4 hours, the obturator between the first and the subsequent pressure vessel is opened. The following pressure vessel is in this case preferably at the same operating pressure as the first or previous pressure vessel. The biomass is conveyed from the first container into the second container, a pump can be used to assist, but preferably this is done by gravity.
To further assist the Umfüllvorganges the stirring or kneading of the first pressure vessel can be turned on. When the transfer operation is completed, the obturator between the first and the next container is closed.
The first and possibly further follow-up container is or are heated, preferably in the manner of the first pressure vessel.
A further particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the first subsequent container takes the water-biomass mixture from the first subsequent container via a specially designed pump and leads through a heat exchanger. The water-biomass mixture heated in the heat exchanger is then returned to the first subsequent tank or subsequent reactor. Particularly advantageous is the design of the pump including a crushing device of the still coarse biomass. The heating of the heat exchanger of the first follow-up container is carried out with thermal oil, particularly preferable is existing hot water of reaction from the end of the process chain. A further advantageous embodiment of the first follow-up container provides for a separation of sand, stones and other mineral components in the biomass. For this purpose, the flow generated by the pump in the first follow-up container is suitably directed so that a separation of the heavy components of the biomass takes place in the first follow-up container. Advantageously, this separation takes place by means of an integrated cyclone or a flow nozzle with a downstream sedimentation tank.
The advantageous embodiment of the cyclone or settling tank provides a discharge of the Foreign components of the biomass from the first follow-up container.
A further embodiment of the first follow-up container provides that this container is also equipped with a mixing or kneading device.
After completion of the reaction or partial reaction in the first follow-up container, the biomass is transported on to the next following container. This transport takes place in the same way as from the first pressure vessel in the first follow-up container.
The number of subsequent containers depends on the desired and set division of the process chain or sections. The design of the further follow-up container corresponds to that of the first follow-up container.
After reaction of the biomass in the last follow-up container, the biomass is transferred to the settling tank. The transfer takes place in the same way as from the first pressure vessel in the first follow-up container.
After refilling, the water-biomass mixture rests an adjustable time in the settling tank. The settling tank is advantageously equipped with a filtration device which allows the separation of the coal from the water-coal mixture. This applies equally to primary products or related products.
As a particularly advantageous embodiment of the filtering the deposition of coal or related products is provided in a half-cylinder. From this half-cylinder, the product is cyclically pressed into a cylinder. The wall of the cylinder is advantageously made of a slotted screen or a metal mesh with a mesh size of about 5 to 50 microns. The squeezed filter cake of the product is advantageously discharged after the pressing operation on the bottom of the press cylinder. Advantageously, the discharge is provided via the cylinder bottom via a lock device.
The pressed-off water of reaction remains in the settling tank until further use. Advantageously, this can be done via pipelines in a separate container.
The settling tank and optionally the container with the water of reaction are isolated as the above-mentioned reaction vessel against heat loss.
The pressurized and at operating temperature reaction water is fed via pipes to the one or more heat exchangers of the subsequent container for heating the biomass. Subsequently, the reaction water of the preheater or the preheating is supplied to keep it at operating temperature. After the preheating the pressurized water of reaction enters the continuous supply of biomass in the Vorwärmbehälter.
Advantageously, the reaction water is cooled to preferably ambient temperature in the continuous biomass feed. The design of the continuous supply of biomass and the time course of the feed is advantageously set in relation to the amount and the temperature of the reaction water coming from the preheating tank and adjusted accordingly.
After leaving the continuous feed of biomass, the water of reaction is released via an expansion valve.
A further particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the reaction water, which is still under pressure and at operating temperature, is supplied to individual stages of the process chain. Advantageously, by recycling the water of reaction, the process can be accelerated and the quality of the reaction product varied.
Another particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the supply of biomass, water and / or at least one catalyst, the temperature and / or pressure conditions in the pressure vessel, the transport of the contents within the pressure vessel and / or the removal of the at least one Reaction product of the filling material from the pressure vessel via a control. According to the invention, in particular the operating and personnel expenses in the course of the process control can be further reduced. A further embodiment of the invention advantageously provides for fully automatic process control.
Advantageously, the temperature of the pressure vessel is kept constant at least over the time duration of the whereabouts of the contents in the pressure vessel.
A further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the temperature in the pressure vessels at least over the time duration of the whereabouts of the contents in the pressure vessels in a range between about 140 degrees Celsius to about 240 degrees Celsius, preferably between about 180 degrees Celsius to about 200 Degrees Celsius is maintained.
Further details, features and advantages of the invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to the illustrated in the figures of the drawing and explained in connection with these advantageous embodiments of the invention:
The inventive method for hydrothermal carbonization is based on a reactor arrangement of batch reactors, which ensure a quasi-continuous flow. For this purpose, superimposed pressure vessels or reactors are arranged with or without stirrer so that the biomass to be carbonized through the system with the least possible mechanical effort.
In the literature and various patent applications, the HTC process (hydrothermal carbonization) is described as a batch process or as a continuous process. In the so-called batch processes, a reactor is filled with the biomass and sealed. Subsequently, the contents are heated, partially stirred by means of a stirrer and added at least one required catalyst. After completion of the process, the carbonized material is removed, in part, the energy contained in the carbonized material is fed to a second batch reactor by means of a heat recovery system. These batch reactors are then operated alternately.
In continuous reactors reaction space is usually filled with a lock chamber or pump. The biomass is brought to operating temperature in a defined space and fed to the reaction space. The biomass goes through a defined path. This way is equal to the reaction time. After passing through the reaction space, the biomass is discharged by means of a dispensing device from the pressure-loaded part of the reactor. A thermal management system ensures the cooling or heating of the biomass.
Nachteile. Both methods are adequately described in various documentations and each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
The HTC process according to the present invention is a hybrid between batch process and continuous process and reduces the plant specific drawbacks.
The type of reactor according to the invention has been designed so that a plurality of pressure vessels are arranged in series and the process of carbonization can proceed in each case in the separate from each other by valves pressure reactors.
This has the advantage that heat energy is saved, since only the first reactor or pressure vessel must always be brought to reaction temperature and then the process can continue through the exothermic process. The excess heat from the subsequent reactors is supplied for heating the biomass before and in the first reactor, for drying the product after leaving the reactors or for other use.
The emptying and filling of the individual reactors is carried out in batches, starting with the emptying of the last reactor, then the emptying of the previous reactor along with the filling of the last reactor to the filling of the first reactor, which must be previously emptied into the second reactor for this purpose. The separators between the reactors serve to prevent non-carbonated biomaterial from prematurely entering the next reactor. The reactors are arranged one above the other, so that when opening the separating valves, the material to be carbonized in a natural way, preferably passes by gravity into the next reactor. In the reactors is partially a stirrer, which is used for homogenization, accelerates the heat transfer and on the other hand promotes the transfer process in the next reactor.
On the basis of the following description, the quasi-continuous process or operational management of the solution according to the invention will be further understood.
Since the process takes place at high temperature (140 to 250 ° C) and high pressure (10 to 35 bar), two different filling variants are described:
1. Befüllung drucklos (Fig. 1)1. filling without pressure (Fig. 1)
First, the reactor contents must be transferred to the second reactor while maintaining the operating pressure. Subsequently, the second reactor is closed by means of the separation fitting and the first reactor is expanded to room pressure. Only then can this reactor be filled without pressure with new biomaterial using a simple technique, then closed and heated up by the HTC process. It is created by the Heating the required operating pressure. The disadvantage here is the swelling load of the pressure reactor, both thermally and mechanically, which can adversely affect the life of the pressure vessel.
2. Befüllung druckbelastet (also unter Beibehaltung des Druckes) (Fig. 2)2. filling pressure loaded (ie while maintaining the pressure) (Fig. 2)
As soon as the reactor is emptied, it is filled under pressure. For this purpose, a solid high-pressure pump is preferably an eccentric screw pump with the help of the most preheated biomaterial is pumped into the reactor.
The respective device or system is operated virtually continuously. In this case, the biomaterial to be converted is in each case rearranged in batches. The shift takes place temporally from bottom to top, since each reactor can first be emptied and then refilled.
