Description
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polymer composites containing electrically conductive nanoparticles, in particular carbon nanotubes, as well as polymer composites prepared by the process.
Carbon nanotubes or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been known since the early 1990s. These are microscopically small tubular structures, i. molecular nanotubes that are built only from carbon. These carbon nanotubes, also referred to as nanoparticles, correspond to the planar layer of graphite that is rolled up into a cylinder. The carbon atoms form a honeycomb-like structure with hexagons and three bonding partners. The tubes may be linear, kinked, narrow, and may additionally be twisted, changing, for example, the electrical properties. Tube diameters in the range of about 1 to 50 nm and lengths up to several millimeters are known, with commercially available nanotubes generally having lengths of 1 to 50 μm. Tube bundles with a diameter of up to 20 cm have already been produced. A distinction is made between single-walled CNTs (also known as single-walled carbon nanotube SWCNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs), in which several single-walled tubes are concentric with one another. Furthermore, there are double-walled CNTs (also called DWCNT double-walled carbon nanotubes) or thin-walled CNTs (also known as TWNTs, or thin-walled nanotubes). Known are CNTs with open tubes that can be filled or empty, or even with closed tubes.
The mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes are outstanding. In addition to the excellent mechanical properties, the carbon nanotubes can provide metallic or semiconductor properties based on the chiral structure of the fullerene. Superconducting structures are also known.
In addition, some CNTs exhibit particularly good thermal and electrical conductivity, such as thermal stability up to about 2800 ° C in vacuum and about 750 ° C in air, and thermal conductivity about twice that of diamond. The current carrying capacity is about 1000 times the load capacity of copper wires.
Known manufacturing methods for CNTs are based on arc discharge between carbon electrodes, the use of an arc together with special catalysts, a laser process or a catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons (CVD method), which allows whole fields of largely parallel tubes to grow on a substrate. In the meantime, the processes can be used to produce larger amounts of various CNTs in terms of diameter, length, multiwall, etc., for example, to obtain gram amounts.
For example, CNTs find use in fiber composites where nanotubes are applied to fibers to enhance their bonding to the surrounding resin matrix, resulting in significant improvements in mechanical properties.
Their particular thermal and electrical properties, combined with other properties such as high rigidity and strength, have led to a number of developments of carbon nanotube composites for a variety of applications.
As is known, the carbon nanotubes are therefore incorporated into polymer composites by generally including the CNTs in a form of bundles in a polymer matrix. Although the carbon nanotubes have a high strength along their longitudinal axis, the cohesion between the individual nanotubes only results from van der Waals forces, so that a polymer matrix enhances cohesion. The unique properties of CNTs give the plastic additional special properties. Carbon nanotubes therefore usually lead to an increase in the strength, elasticity, loading capacity, stiffness and toughness of polymer composites.
By mixing nanotubes in conventional plastics not only the mechanical properties of the plastics can be improved, but it is also possible to produce electrically conductive plastics. Even an addition of 0.04 wt .-% of CNT is sufficient to provide a plastic (at least slightly) electrically conductive, the electrical conductivity is substantially correlated with the height of the weight fraction of CNTs. The critical filler concentration to actually achieve electrical conductivity is referred to as the percolation threshold. Thus, for example, CNTs are conventional conductivity carbon blacks, which include, but are not limited to, carbon blacks. used for electrode material, far superior. Electrically conductive plastics are therefore regarded as pioneering material in many areas.
Derartige Komposite finden beispielsweise Verwendung als Materialien für die elektromagnetische Interferenzabschirmung (EMI), wärmeabführende Filme, Lackierungen, Beschichtungen, Kleber, Schalter, Photoleiter, Impedanzadapter für OLEDs u.v.a.m.Electrically conductive polymer composites are very high because of their unique combination of electrical conductivity and flexibility of the polymer asked. Such composites find use, for example, as materials for electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI), heat-dissipating films, coatings, coatings, adhesives, switches, photoconductors, impedance adapters for OLEDs, and many more
In these carbon nanotube-containing polymer composites both SWCNTs and MWCNTs have been used in thermoset polymers such as epoxies, polyimides and phenolic resins, as well as in thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene, polystyrene, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA),
Unlike the production of conventional fiber-reinforced composites, the production and processing of polymer composites containing carbon nanotubes is much more complicated and expensive:
One problem is, for example, the uniform distribution of the nanoparticles, ie nanotubes, since the van der Waals forces acting between the nanotubes counteract the distribution in a polymer medium and support an agglomeration of the nanotubes. For example, SWCNTs tend to have entanglements such as twisted ropes, and MWCNTs made by a CVD process entangle like spaghetti. The separation of the nanotubes in a solvent or with the aid of a matrix is therefore a prerequisite for forming a conductive network.
The problem of agglomeration in the production and further processing of composites containing carbon nanotubes also leads to the fact that the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in highly viscous polymers is very difficult. Also, the resulting proportions of carbon nanotubes that are present in the composite are relatively low.
It has already been attempted to improve this problem by functionalization, thus establishing mutually attractive interactions between the nanotubes and the polymer matrix. In this case, chemical bonds between the nanotubes and the matrix are produced either by chemical processes or by irradiation with electrons or ions. This facilitates, for example, the peeling or peeling of tubes from bundles and improves their processability, can be used to modify the properties and to improve the connection between the carbon nanotubes and the embedding matrix. Also known are pretreatments of the nanotubes, such as a treatment with ultrasound, mixing or calendering to disperse the CNTs.
However, the disadvantages of such functionalizations or pretreatments are the associated changes in the carbon nanotubes. For example, in this case, the aspect ratio of the tubes can be changed or a modification of the surface properties of the tubes is achieved, but this can regularly adversely affect the mechanical and / or electrical properties of the CNTs.
In addition to the tendency of the nanotubes to agglomerate and the insufficient dispersion in polymer media, another problem is the high cost in the preparation of polymer composites containing the carbon nanotubes or CNTs. For this purpose, the carbon nanotubes must be permanently applied, for example, to a substrate and arranged there in whatever form. This requires a variety of processing or process steps. For example, it is possible to disperse the carbon nanotubes in appropriate solutions and to produce therefrom thin films on substrates. By immersion in different solutions composites can be produced with relatively high volume fractions, for example, each with a thickness of a few nanometers per pass. However, this manufacturing process is very time consuming and cumbersome and the accessible products only have thicknesses in the micron range.
Moreover, with the known methods it is only possible to process carbon nanotubes of generally short length.
The inherently loose and weakly bonded carbon nanotubes, which are present, for example, as an agglomerate in the form of an accumulation of CNTs or formed in multiple layers, make it difficult to apply a uniform force over the entire thickness of the carbon nanotubes, for example as CNT layers present structure apply. The interactions between the nanotubes with each other are weak, since only van der Waals forces are present, so that the cohesion breaks apart easily. Therefore, to date, there is no practical method to achieve an increase in the content of carbon nanotubes in a polymer matrix.
- A) In Kontakt bringen von einwandigen Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhren mit einer wasserlöslichen Komponente in einem wässerigen Medium, wobei die Komponente entweder ein wasserlösliches erstes Polymer aufweist oder ein wasserlösliches oberflächenaktives Mittel;
- B) Mischen des aus Schritt A) resultierenden Produkts mit entweder wässerigem Latex eines zweiten Polymers oder mit einem oder mehreren wasserlöslichen Vorläufern eines zweiten Polymers;
- C) Entfernen des Wassers aus der in Schritt B) erhaltenen Mischung;
That's how it describes
- A) contacting single-wall carbon nanotubes with a water-soluble component in an aqueous medium, the component comprising either a water-soluble first polymer or a water-soluble surfactant;
- B) mixing the product resulting from step A) with either aqueous latex of a second polymer or with one or more water-soluble precursors of a second polymer;
- C) removing the water from the mixture obtained in step B);
- D) molding the product of step C) using pressure and temperature such that the second polymer begins to flow or the second polymer is formed from one or more precursors and forms therefrom a carbon nanotube reinforced polymer having a specific electrical conductivity Has a resistance of less than 10 6 Ω / cm with a content of carbon nanotubes of 1.5 wt .-% and less, and
- E) processing and / or solidifying the carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer from step D) into a desired shape.
The carbon nanotubes essentially retain their ratio of length to diameter ("aspect ratio") and the mechanical and conductivity properties are improved. However, the proportion of CNTs obtained is not very high, and thus the electrical conductivity also remains very low.

There is therefore a need for a new process for producing electrically conductive particles, such as polymer composites containing carbon nanotubes, which has the disadvantages of Prior art avoids, in particular, the problems of inclination of the nanoparticles for agglomeration and the insufficient dispersion in polymer media excludes and nanoparticle-containing polymer composites provides improved properties, especially polymer composites with a higher weight fraction of electrically conductive nanoparticles in the polymer composite. It is also the polymer composites containing electrically conductive nanoparticles, and an apparatus for performing the method can be provided.
- (1) Bereitstellen von Agglomeraten der elektrisch leitfähigen Nanopartikel, insbesondere CNT-Agglomerate;
- (2) Einpacken der die Nanopartikel enthaltenden Agglomerate in eine, insbesondere flexibel ausgebildete, semipermeable Membran, so dass die Agglomerate vollständig umhüllt sind;

- (1) providing agglomerates of the electrically conductive nanoparticles, in particular CNT agglomerates;
- (2) packing the agglomerates containing the nanoparticles into a semipermeable membrane which is in particular flexibly formed so that the agglomerates are completely enveloped;
- (3) soak the ones from step (

Accordingly, the present invention relates to a process that makes it possible to produce polymer composites with a high weight content of electrically conductive fillers. The electrically conductive fillers are nanoparticles in the present invention. The term "electrically conductive nanoparticles" in the present context is to be understood as meaning that in principle all particles can fall in which one, two and / or all three dimensions (spatial directions) are in the nanoscale and have electrically conductive properties. The nanoparticles can have different shapes. For example, they can be present as flat particles, in tubular form, in rod form, as bands or as spherical particles. For example, the electrically conductive nanoparticles may include graphenes, carbon nanofibres, CNTs, or metallic particles, e.g. Silver particles, or conductive ceramics.
In the context of the present invention, the electrically conductive particles used are preferably carbon nanotubes (CNTs, also referred to as "CNTs"). A "high proportion by weight" of nanoparticles or CNTs is understood here to mean weight fractions of> 20% by weight, which are obtained using the known prior art dispersion and composite preparation processes using, for example, an elastomeric and / or duromeric polymer matrix , very difficult or impossible to produce. According to the invention, proportions by weight of the nanofillers> 50% by weight can be achieved.
It has also been found that the polymer composites which can be prepared by the process of the invention have a very high electrical conductivity, which is significantly higher than with previously produced such polymer composites. By "very high electrical conductivity" is meant, according to the invention, electrical conductivities which are far above the values obtained by dispersing nanoparticles in polymer media. So far, no methods have become known that could produce purely CNT-containing polymer composites with an electrical conductivity> 50 S / m. This is now possible for the first time with the method according to the invention.
The polymer composites which can be prepared by the process according to the invention are generally sheet-like structures, preferably in the form of films or plates. The polymeric matrix is preferably composed essentially of crosslinkable polymers, such as duromers and / or elastomers, and a defined proportion of nanoparticles, in particular carbon nanotubes. The base of this flat structure is not limited and is only specified by the dimensions of the manufacturing device used. The thickness of the polymer composite produced is generally in the range of about 100 microns to a few millimeters, but in individual cases can also be exceeded or fallen below.
Advantageously, the present process of the invention can be carried out without additional treatment processes, pretreatment steps or mixing processes of the nanoparticles or CNT nanofillers.
According to the invention, the preparation of the polymer composites is carried out differently than in the prior art without a mixing-in process and thus avoids the problems that arise as a result of dispersing processes due to the excessive increase in viscosity and the technically predetermined limits. The inventive method allows the distances between the Nanoparticles or carbon tubes to reduce further than can be done in a mechanically forcing infiltration with a polymer. The special method of the present invention enables additional compression of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the inventive method allows a virtually complete filling of the interstices between the nanoparticles to interstices in the nanometer range.
In Verfahrensschritt (
In process step (
Typically, the nanoparticles will be in disordered alignment within an agglomerate. In particular, CNTs of an agglomerate are often entangled, similar to the individual cotton fibers within a cotton swab. In principle, however, the nanoparticles within an agglomerate can also be present in an ordered orientation, for example as a uniformly oriented laminate structure. The agglomerates are often in powder form.
The nanoparticles can either be prepared by one of the known processes of the prior art or can be obtained from a commercially available source and used. The known CNTs are, for example, single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs, single-walled carbon nanotubes) or multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs, or multi-walled nanotubes) or can also be mixtures of these. The CNTs in the agglomerate employed may be ordered or disordered, i. these have an orientation in a preferred direction or are arranged statistically distributed. The CNTs can be used in the form of entangled or non-entangled agglomerates.
Any type of manufacturable or commercially available carbon nanotube of any structure can be used. For example, commercially available CNTs are Baytubes ® Bayer Material Science, wherein this is multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs, engl. Multi-walled nanotubes) is. Also, any type of commercially available other nanoparticles can be used.
In this context, it should be noted that although the nanoparticles or carbon nanotubes can be used independently of the manufacturing process, the exact composition and structure of the material used can affect the electrical conductivity of the polymer composite.
There is likewise no restriction for the nanoparticles present in the agglomerate. These can be used immediately after the production process or can be subjected to further treatment and / or purification processes. For example, the nanoparticles can be chemically modified or coated to impart additional functions or properties. However, this is less preferred.
Normally, only one type of nanoparticles is provided per polymer composite. In principle, however, it would also be possible to use different nanoparticles in a polymer composite.
A significant advantage of the present invention over known processes is that the commercially available nanoparticles are typically present as disordered agglomerates and can be used with the present process without further pretreatment. In contrast, in known processes, the individual agglomerates often have to be unraveled or arranged in an orderly manner (detangled).

The term "membrane" is to be understood as broadly as possible according to the invention, in the sense of a filter. The material of the membrane is expediently designed such that it can be folded around the agglomerate, ie the membrane is sufficiently flexible to be folded. Furthermore, the membrane is semipermeable so that the polymer (s) can pass through the membrane but the nanoparticles are retained by the membrane. The membrane could therefore be said to be selectively permeable because only certain components are allowed to pass through, whereas other components are selectively blocked. Furthermore, the membrane for the selected components - in the present case, one or more polymers, which are preferably in solution, - in both directions permeable (bidirectional) and not only in one direction (unidirectional). This allows polymers from outside the membrane, for example from a polymer bath, to pass through the membrane to the agglomerates or in the reverse direction from the agglomerates through the membrane to the outside.
Another preferred property of the membrane is its absorbency, so that the membrane also absorb polymer during impregnation of the agglomerates and can later release again.
Besonders bevorzugt wird das Einpacken aus Verfahrensschritt (
- a) Platzieren der Agglomerate, insbesondere mittig, auf einer Membran mit bevorzugt viereckiger, insbesondere quadratischer Form;
- a) placing the agglomerates, in particular in the center, on a membrane having a preferably quadrangular, in particular square shape;
- b) successively folding and folding all side surfaces of the membrane on the agglomerates.
The packing of the agglomerates according to the invention in a similar manner as in the packaging of a gift in wrapping paper, but preferably with the most accurate overlap of the folded parts:
The agglomerate is placed in the center of the membrane and then the 4 side faces of the membrane are folded over onto the agglomerate and folded thereon, so that the agglomerate is completely surrounded by the membrane. Preferably, the opposing side surfaces of the membrane are folded in pairs on each other. Particularly preferably, the dimensions of the membrane are chosen so that the membrane surrounds the agglomerate after packing as accurately as possible, without exerting wrinkles, protruding edges and edges and without excessive tension and pressure on the agglomerate. The membrane may have various shapes and sizes, depending on the shape and size of the agglomerates to be packaged. Preferred shapes are square, in particular square, other shapes are also possible. The membrane serves as a geometric boundary for the agglomerates.
The choice of the material of the membrane is not particularly limited in the context of the invention, provided that it meets the requirements of the invention. An exemplary membrane is selected from filter paper, felt, woven or knitted fabrics, for example, in particular, mineral, glass, ceramic or carbon fabrics, felts, knits and natural fibers.
After packing the agglomerates in the membrane, the membrane can be additionally fixed or attached. For this purpose, an easy to install and easy to remove fastener is suitable. For example, a clip, clip or clip can be used for this purpose. The fastener then holds the membrane in place during subsequent impregnation with polymer.
The polymer or mixture of a plurality of polymers is not particularly limited in the present invention, it can be selected from a wide range of possible polymers. Particular preference is given to thermosets and / or elastomers. Duromers, also referred to as thermosets, form one of three groups into which polymers are classified. Depending on the degree of crosslinking, a distinction is made according to the macromolecular main chains for thermosets, thermoplastics and elastomers. While the thermoplastics have no crosslinking points and therefore are meltable, elastomers and thermosets can not be melted due to their crosslinking and disintegrate after exceeding the decomposition temperature by pyrolysis. Known thermosets are, for example, epoxy resins, aminoplasts, phenoplasts, crosslinked polyacrylates and other crosslinked polymers, such as polyurethanes. Elastomers are dimensionally stable, but elastically deformable plastics that deform elastically under tensile and compressive loading, but return to their original shape. Elastomers find use as material for tires, rubber bands, sealing rings and are for example polyisoprenes, butadienes such as styrene butadiene, ethylene propylene rubbers such as EPDM, polyacrylic rubbers, silicone rubbers, polyether block amides, fluoroelastomers and perfluoroelastomers.
Polyen-(z.B. Dicyclopentadien, Norbornadien, Vinylcyclohexan)-dioxiden; Glycidylether von multifunktionalen Alkoholen oder Bisphenolen (z.B. Glycerin, 1-4-Butandiol, Poly(ethylenglykol), Poly(propylenglykol), Bisphenol A, Bisphenol F, Bisphenol C) oder eine Kombination dieser.The following may be mentioned as exemplary polymers which can be used as the matrix system, without the polymers used according to the invention being restricted thereto:
A first group of preferred polymers are epoxy resins, preferably those derived from:
Polyene (eg, dicyclopentadiene, norbornadiene, vinylcyclohexane) dioxides; Glycidyl ethers of multifunctional alcohols or bisphenols (eg glycerol, 1-4-butanediol, poly (ethylene glycol), poly ( propylene glycol), bisphenol A, bisphenol F, bisphenol C) or a combination of these.
The epoxy resins are preferably used with the addition of hardeners, which are particularly preferably selected from amine hardeners or other hardeners.
Die Aminhärter sind bevorzugt abgeleitet von:
aliphatischen polyfunktionalen Aminen (z.B.
funktionalisierten Diaminen (z.B. 1,3-Diaminoisopropanol).The amine hardeners are preferably derived from:
aliphatic polyfunctional amines (eg triethylenetetramine), polyamines, polyethers or aminopropyl or aminoethyl-terminated polysiloxanes, or
functionalized diamines (
Andere bevorzugt einsetzbare Härter sind beispielsweise:
Polycyclische Anhydride (z.B. Pyromellitdianhydrid, Hexahydrophthalsäureanhydrid, Bernsteinsäureanhydrid, Maleinsäureanhydrid).Other preferably usable hardeners are, for example:
Polycyclic anhydrides (eg, pyromellitic dianhydride, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, succinic anhydride, maleic anhydride).
Preferred additives used here are selected, for example, from:
Aminoalkyltrimethoxysilanen; Epoxyalkyltrimethoxysilanes or isocyanatoalkyltrimethoxysilanes.
Methylvinylsiloxanoligomeren und -Copolymeren und Methyl-, Hydridosiloxanoligomeren, gehärtet bei Temperaturen im Bereich von 25°C bis zu 150°C; Silanol-terminiertem PDMS und Tetraalkoxysilanen oder Aryl- oder Alkyltrialkoxysilanen oder Mischungen dieser Silane;
Acryloxy-terminiertem PDMS und polycyclischen Aminen;
A second group of preferred polymers are silicone gums. These are preferably derived from
Methylvinylsiloxane oligomers and copolymers and methyl, hydridosiloxane oligomers cured at temperatures ranging from 25 ° C up to 150 ° C; Silanol-terminated PDMS and tetraalkoxysilanes or aryl or alkyltrialkoxysilanes or mixtures of these silanes;
Acryloxy-terminated PDMS and polycyclic amines;
Bis (3-aminopropyl) -terminated PDMS and multifunctional polyol acrylates (eg, pentaerythritol triacrylate or dipentaerythritol penta- / hexa-acrylate) or diglycidyl-terminated PDMS and multifunctional amines.
More preferably, the agglomerates are immersed in a polymer bath at a temperature above room temperature, preferably in the range of about 30 to about 70 ° C, more preferably about 40 to about 60 ° C, and optionally, using vacuum. There are also higher temperatures depending on the polymer system conceivable. The duration depends on the type and structure of the agglomerates, the composition of the bath and the selected temperature. The use of vacuum is particularly advantageous because it allows degassing of the agglomerates can be achieved. In the solution, evolution and rising of air bubbles indicates that the polymer or polymers are efficiently displacing and replacing air from the solution.
The membrane in which the agglomerates are packaged, because of the semipermeable design, allows the polymer (s) in solution in the polymer bath to pass to the agglomerates, but the nanoparticles from the agglomerate do not escape and migrate into the solution can.
After the bath, the optionally existing fastener can be removed again.
During pressing, the existing semipermeable membrane acts on the agglomerates in several respects: Thus, the pressure used causes the polymer (s) to be forced out of the agglomerates. Excess polymer can escape from the agglomerates by the applied pressure and be conveyed out through the membrane. The membrane acts in this case as a discharge system.
Particularly preferably, the membrane is also designed to be absorbent, so that the previously absorbed in the impregnation, preferably in a polymer bath, polymer can be released by the use of pressure from the membrane. The membrane then serves as an additional polymer source and reserve and releases the polymer or polymers to the agglomerates under pressure. As a result of the surfaces of the pressing tool lying against the membrane, ie above and below the packed-in agglomerate, an infiltration of the polymer (s) in the direction parallel to the pressing direction thus occurs enforced and acts practically as a "polymer trap". At the same time, outflow of excess polymer to the outside, perpendicular to the pressing direction between the adjoining surfaces of the pressing tool, is possible. The membrane therefore preferably serves at the same time as a polymer reservoir and / or polymer source for receiving and / or delivering the polymers.
Thus, the membrane preferably serves in the same way as a recording and / or delivery system for the nanoparticles already impregnated with polymer, for example in the form of CNTs, and thus ensures complete polymer penetration when carrying out the process.
Due to the inventive design of the method, the polymer or polymers therefore readily between the individual nanoparticles and thus ensures particularly good penetration and homogeneous filling up to the smallest gaps in the nanometer range. In particular, by pressing out using a semipermeable membrane results in an extremely efficient filling of the interstices between the nanoparticles. In the case of carbon nanotubes, the channels within the individual tubes can also be filled by polymer. However, this need not necessarily be the case, the tubes then remain unfilled.
The semipermeable membrane also acts as a barrier to the nanoparticles to be densified, for example in the form of the CNTs, i. There is a discharge of superfluous polymer during compression to allow high weight fractions of nanoparticles.
Unlike the hitherto known prior art, the method of the invention uses a planar contact for applying the mechanical force to the nanoparticles impregnated with polymer, preferably duromer / elastomer system or even thermoplastic, which are packed in a semipermeable membrane.
According to a further preferred embodiment, a separating layer for easier detachment from the pressing tool can be provided between the press and the packed agglomerates.
Finally, the polymer-impregnated agglomerates are expediently cured under pressure. Here, the pressure and duration of use are adjusted so that the desired thickness and the appropriate degree of cure can be achieved. The selection of the individual parameters depends on the agglomerates used, the selected polymer matrix system, the solvent (s) used and the desired application. These parameters can readily be selected and adjusted by a person skilled in the art. On the basis of some orienting experiments it is easily possible to determine an optimized procedure.
In order to reduce the viscosities of the polymer systems used, in particular duromer / elastomer systems or thermoplastics, heating and / or chemical modification and / or dilution of the not yet fully cured polymer with solvents can additionally take place. A defined composite geometry is ensured by a partial or complete polymerization within the device used.
After curing, the membrane is expediently removed and the polymer composite produced is obtained.
The procedure according to the invention makes it possible to obtain the nanoparticles, in particular the carbon nanotubes, with their original orientation in a polymer matrix, the continuity of the nanoparticles being maintained over the entire thickness. The membrane serves as a geometric boundary and thus enables a compression of the nanoparticles, prevents an uncontrolled flow apart of the nanoparticles / polymer mixture and thus opens up the possibility of building up a high mechanical pressure. The membrane therefore ensures the structural cohesion of the agglomerates.
The invention also provides a polymer composite comprising electrically conductive nanoparticles, in particular carbon nanotubes (CNTs), obtainable by the process of the present invention. The polymer composite produced according to the invention is characterized in particular by a weight fraction of nanoparticles> 20% by weight, preferably> 30% by weight, still more preferably> 40% by weight, in particular> 50% by weight.
Of course, the polymer composites prepared may contain any additives in addition to the nanoparticles and the polymer matrix, which are already contained in the agglomerates. These are, for example, additional fillers, which are preferably also electrically conductive. Examples which may be mentioned are conductive fillers, for example conductivity carbon blacks or fullerenes. In particular, combinations of different fillers are possible. These additives are not critical, provided that they neither adversely affect the process of the invention nor the desired application.

- (2) a device for folding the membrane to completely encase the agglomerates;
- (3) a device for impregnating the of step (

The above statements on the method according to the invention apply correspondingly to the device of the invention.
The advantages achieved by the present invention are very complex:
Thus, by using a semipermeable membrane, the present method makes it possible to embed nanoparticles, for example in the form of carbon nanotubes, in a polymer matrix, preferably duromer and / or elastomer matrix, with very high proportions by weight. With commercially available CNT agglomerates fill levels> 50 wt .-% were achieved with the inventive method. Such virtually pore-free polymer composites have an electrical conductivity in the range of, for example, 2000 to 3000 S / m. Even higher electrical conductivities and higher weight proportions can be set.
The process is applicable regardless of the choice of polymers, also low to medium viscous polymers, such as duromer and elastomer systems are useful. There is also no restriction on the type and morphologies of the nanoparticles, in particular the CNTs.
The core of the process of the present invention is the use of a mechanical compression using a semipermeable membrane for the production of laminar composites. The introduction of this membrane allows the application of a high mechanical pressure in the composite production.
- (i) The membrane serves as a geometric boundary and thus makes it possible to compress the nanoparticles at the same time. It prevents an uncontrolled flow apart of the nanoparticles / polymer mixture and thus opens up the possibility of building up a high mechanical pressure.
- (ii) The membrane is semi-permeable and serves as a barrier for the nanoparticles to be compressed, ie a discharge of superfluous polymer system takes place during the compression in order to allow high proportions by weight of the nanoparticles.
- (iii) The membrane preferably serves as a polymer source and reserve for the nanoparticles already impregnated with polymer, thus allowing complete polymer penetration when carrying out the process.
The material flow from the points (i) to (iii) allows a virtually pore-free production of the polymer composite according to the invention. "Virtually non-porous" in the context of the invention means that no more pores are detectable, i. these are below the measuring accuracy.
The nanoparticles / polymer composites produced can be used in a variety of applications, such as transistors, in particular in carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNTFETs), for nonvolatile data memories, displays, in measurement technology, for example in high-performance scanning tunneling microscopes (RTM), in aircraft and automotive engineering, for conducting antistatic films, in semiconductor technology and vam

A pressure in the range of> 10 MPa up to several hundred MPa is appropriate depending on the selection of the starting materials. The pressing is preferably carried out using heat, wherein a temperature above room temperature can be adjusted. A preferred temperature is in the range of about room temperature to about 200 ° C. or higher, depending on the polymer, more preferably room temperature to 100 ° C., especially 70 to 90 ° C.
The pressing and curing can in principle be carried out in the same device, in particular the pressing device. However, the compressed membrane can also be removed from the pressing device after the pressing and the curing of the polymer can then take place outside the pressing device.

In the following example, the method according to the invention is described in detail by means of an experiment. Of course, the present invention should not be limited thereby.
The aforementioned base area of the prefolded membrane was filled with CNT agglomerates of the type "Baytubes type C150P (as delivered condition), weight 2 g".
The CNTs were folded in with the filter paper (also in the manner shown in the figures). Two commercially available paper clips were attached (slightly bent) to ensure cohesion during transport and later resin impregnation.
The epoxy resin system RIMR135 / RIMH137 (Hexion) was mixed according to the data sheet provided by the manufacturer. To ensure a sufficient level, 20 g of resin and a corresponding amount of hardener was used. Subsequently, the epoxy resin system was stirred for 10 minutes in an aluminum disposable container.
Degassing of the resin / hardener mixture for 5 to 10 minutes at low gas pressure in a pre-heated to 70 ° C oven. Subsequently, the aluminum auxiliary container was removed with resin / hardener mixture.
The filter paper wrapped CNTs were impregnated with epoxy resin system securing clips, weighted with a small auxiliary weight so that it came to rest on the bottom of the resin / hardener filled vessel.
This was followed by a single, short vacuum drawing and the removal of the vessel. The filter paper wrapped CNTs were removed from the jar and the securing clips removed.
On the samples, a PTFE film was placed on each of the lower and upper sides (PTFE film about 15 × 15 cm 2 , centered). The film acts as a release agent for laterally leaking resin.
With the film, the sample was placed in a heated and preheated to about 80 ° C hydraulic press. Within 10 minutes, the pressure was increased to about 25 MPa (with base area of the sample results in a force of 30 kN).
The pressure was maintained for about 30 minutes. After that, the heating was switched off. Optionally, the sample may be left in the press for a given curing time with or without heating.
After 12 hours, the sample was removed from the press, the release liners removed by simply stripping and residual resin removed outside the filter paper.
Basically, the filter paper can be left to sample. In the present case, the removal was carried out by grinding.
After thermogravimetric analysis and conductivity measurements, the sample had a CNT weight fraction of 56% by weight and an electrical conductivity of 2500 to 2600 S / m.
