Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for the active manipulation of an electrically conductive substance which is exposed to a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field. In the following, the term "manipulation" is intended to stabilize the free surface of a preferably floating electrically conductive substance, to position a certain amount of a preferably floating electrically conductive substance and to control the movement and the inductive heating of a preferably floating electrically conductive substance in each case high-frequency electromagnetic alternating field.
In electrical process engineering and metallurgy, high-frequency electromagnetic alternating fields are used for shaping the free surfaces of an electrically conductive substance. It is known that high-frequency electromagnetic alternating fields in an electrically highly conductive substance, such as a liquid metal melt, due to the so-called skin effect can not and only limited to the so-called skin depth penetrate. Thus, the effects of the high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field are limited directly to the free surface of the electrically conductive substance. The alternating electromagnetic field induces so-called eddy currents, which flow in the immediate vicinity of the free surface of the electrically conductive substance. After the known physical phenomena of magnetic fluid dynamics, the induced eddy currents interact with the applied alternating electromagnetic field and generate so-called Lorentz forces in the electrically conductive substance. These Lorentz forces also act only in the immediate vicinity of the free surface of the electrically conductive substance. Therefore, one speaks of an electromagnetic pressure exerted by the alternating electromagnetic field on the free surface of the electrically conductive substance.
It is known that this electromagnetic pressure can be used to the electrically conductive substance z. B. levitation melting or in the physical vapor deposition completely levitate, or z. B. in cold crucible method to achieve a semi-levitation or z. B. in the electromagnetic gap seal to prevent leakage of the liquid metal melt from a container under the influence of gravity. The background of all these applications is that the electromagnetic force coupling takes place without contact and can thus be used especially for hot, chemically aggressive molten metals.
However, it is also known that such electromagnetically shaped surfaces of electrically conductive substances tend increasingly to instabilities. For example, at a certain threshold level of electromagnetic pressure at the free surface, a fully levitated amount of a molten metal may be caused to rotate strongly by fanned so-called Maxwell forces. The centrifugal forces induced thereby cause a large change in the free surface of the levitated amount of melt. This is due to the so-called skin effect, a strong spatial change of the applied electromagnetic alternating field, whereby the levitation process collapses. In addition, at a certain threshold of electromagnetic pressure applied to the free surface, semi-levitated liquid metal droplets can be excited to strong oscillations leading to rupture of the droplets. This also breaks down the semi-levitation process. Finally, in electromagnetic gap sealing, the planar free surface of a liquid metal can be excited to pinch instabilities. In the process, finger-shaped depressions form on the surface, which cause the electromagnetic sealing effect to collapse.
A number of arrangements and methods are known from the prior art, with which such instabilities of free surfaces of electrically conductive substances prevented or the threshold value of the electromagnetic pressure for the onset of instabilities should be significantly increased. In this case, on the one hand, special geometric arrangements of electromagnetic inductors for generating the electromagnetic alternating field are proposed. On the other hand, arrangements are proposed in which the primary electromagnetic alternating field is superimposed by further static or time-dependent electromagnetic fields.

In addition, the change in the spatial distribution of the high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field caused by the device according to the invention can change its inductive heating effect on the electrically conductive substance. This allows the active control of the inductive heating and the movement of the free surface of an electrically conductive substance which is exposed to a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field. By way of example, active stabilization of the free surface of a completely or partially levitated quantity of liquid metal is achieved by such a device.
- The geometrical aspect ratio Γ between the diameter d W1 of the first winding (
12 ) of the conductor loop (10 ) and the diameter d W2 of the second winding (13 ) of the conductor loop (10 ) - The aspect ratio Π between the diameter d W1 of the first winding (

In a preferred embodiment, the frequency of the primary magnetic field f pMF = 30 kHz, the average magnetic induction B RMS = 50 mT, the characteristic length dimension L = 25 mm, the aspect ratios Γ <1 and Π <1 and the distance D = d W1 , With this embodiment, a local effect on the electrically conductive substance can be realized. A global effect for this arrangement is possible only when the electrically conductive substance passes into a resonance regime.
In another preferred embodiment, the frequency of the primary magnetic field f pMF = 30 kHz, the mean magnetic induction B RMS = 50 mT, the characteristic length dimension L = 25 mm and the distance D = d W1 , the aspect ratios Γ ≥ 1 and Π <1 are. Thus, a global effect on the electrically conductive substance can be exercised, since the primary alternating magnetic field affects the entire volume of the electrically conductive substance.
The device according to the invention is characterized by a significantly higher efficiency, since the ratio η between the power of the generator for generating the primary alternating magnetic field and the power of the device according to the invention for actively manipulating the electrically conductive substance values of η> 5000 (for example 25000 W / 3 W).
