Description
GEBIETTERRITORY
The present disclosure relates to a charging system that can be connected to a power grid, and more particularly to a charging system that is configured to run or extract an input power to the power grid to adjust a power factor.
HINTERGRUNDBACKGROUND
The statements in this section provide background information only with respect to the present disclosure and may or may not form the prior art.
The power factor can be an important aspect to consider in an AC power distribution system. The power factor is a ratio of active power to apparent power and is usually a value between 0 and 1. When the power factor approaches 1, the reactive power or no working power approaches 0, which means that less energy is wasted in the power distribution system. Having a low power factor that is significantly less than 1 can cause several problems. For example, more power is needed to deliver the same amount of power, and the power delivered to other loads in the power distribution system may be skewed due to the low power factor. In addition, the power distribution system may need to be oversized to account for the reactive power generated due to the low power factor.
As a result, utilities sometimes require consumers to maintain a power factor within a predetermined limit or pay a power factor premium. A power factor surcharge is a charge that the utility requires if the average monthly power factor falls below a certain amount, which is usually around 0.95. Although power factor surcharges usually only affect commercial consumers who consume large amounts of power, it is becoming increasingly common to demand the power factor premium from consumers in residential areas as well. There is therefore an increased demand for consumer products that reduce energy costs and improve efficiency.
