Description
The invention relates to the field of materials science and relates to a composite material which can be used for example as an actuator material and a method for its production.
Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys show a change in shape of several percent by moving twin boundaries in a small external magnetic field (<1 Tesla) or under mechanical stresses. Gemini borders connect mirror-image oriented crystal areas. These are called variants. Due to the high magnetic anisotropy and low twin stress of these materials, the reorientation of the variants can be caused by twin boundary motion through an external magnetic field, which results in elongation of the overall body as crystal axes of different lengths are reoriented. This "Magnetically Induced Field Strain" mentioned effect was 1996 Ni 2 MnGa single crystals discovered (K. Ullakko et al .: Appl. Phys. Lett. 69, 1996, 1966-1968). The structure of this material system was first described in 1984 (PJ Webster et al., Philos., Mag. 49, 1984, 295-310). In fact, a non-stoichiometric 11% elongation Ni 2 MnGa alloy shows the highest measured magnetically induced strain heretofore (A. Sozinov et al., Appl. Phys. Lett., 80, 2002, 1746). Similarly large strains are exhibited by conventional shape memory alloys such as Ni-Al with up to 13% elongation or Ni-Ti alloys exhibiting up to 10% elongation in single crystals and up to 8% in the case of polycrystals (K. Bhattacharya, Oxford University Press, 2003, ISBN: 0-19-850934-0). Elongation of these materials, however, can only be achieved by mechanical action or temperature change beyond the martensite to austenite transition temperature. For some applications, however, the limited by heat transfer reaction times are too long (switching frequency <10 Hz). Other functional materials, whose elongation is due to other principles, show changes in shape under the effect of electric or magnetic fields and thereby have shorter reaction times (kHZ range). The achievable strains, however, are significantly lower. For example, piezoelectric crystals deform by up to about 0.2% upon application of an electric field (Y. Saito, et al: Nature 432, 2004, 84-87) and magnetostrictive materials such as terfenol D reach up to 0 under magnetic field influence. 26% elongation (AE Clark: AIP Conference Proceedings 18, 1974, 1015). Due to the short response time when applying a magnetic field (milliseconds) and the high elongation Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are promising materials for use as actuator material. For this reason, they are currently the subject of intensive research worldwide.
The special properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys have hitherto been described primarily on monocrystalline samples. For technical applications, it is interesting to consider polycrystalline material. One of the main motivations for the development of polycrystalline ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, in addition to the lower costs compared to single crystals, is the higher constancy of the characteristic values and the characteristic curves from sample to sample. However, polycrystals have a much lower magnetically induced strain than single crystals because of incompatibilities of neighboring grains (Y. Boonyongmaneerat, et al: Phys. Rev. Lett., 99, 2007, 247201; U. Gaitzsch, et al: Acta Mater., 57, 2009). 365). By setting a textured texture, however, these incompatibilities can be minimized. This texturing may be accomplished by directional solidification (M.Poschke, et al: J. Magn. Magn., Mater 316, 2007, 383), melt spinning (H.Morawiec, et al., Mater. Sci., Forum 63, 2010, 189- 194) or Directed Deformation (A. Böhm, et al: Actuator 08, conference proceedings 2008, 742; R. Chulist et al: Mater Sci., Forum 635, 2009, 195; R. Chulist, et al: Scr. Mater. 62, 2010, 650). In the shape memory alloys, depending on the chemical composition, the martensite phases may occur in different modulations. Modulation (M) refers to the periodic shift of crystal planes. A distinction is made between 5M and 7M and NM according to the number of densely packed planes after which the structure repeats. Newer names for these modulations also use 10M and 14M. The 5M structure has the least anisotropy and the least achievable strain, but on the basis of these values, causes the highest magnetically inducible stress to move around the twin boundaries (U. Gaitzsch, Dissertation TU-Dresden, 2008). The higher the lattice deformation, the lower the magnetically inducible mechanical stress.
The most common type of composites involving shape memory materials are polymer matrix composites. The polymer matrix separates the monocrystalline particles, so that they interfere less in their shape change each other. In the simplest case of ideal spherical balls of the same diameter, the maximum filling density of the function-bearing shape memory material is 74%. The filling density can theoretically be increased by a) a bimodal distribution of the ball diameters or b) deviation from the spherical shape. In practice, however, lower bulk densities are achieved because angular particles and those with an aspect ratio> 1 hinder each other in their movement and therefore with the state not reach the lowest hollow volume. Ni-Mn-Ga composites with Ni-Mn-Ga particles or fibers, which are produced by comminuting raw blocks, fibers or strips, are known. These particles are aligned by a magnetic field while the polymer matrix cures (DC Dunand, et al: Adv. Mat. 23, 2011, 216). As a result, the particles form chains within the matrix. This increases the brittleness of these composites and requires that the fill levels are well below the theoretical maximum for balls of the same diameter. For nickel-manganese-gallium composites, studies have a filling level of 20% (Scheerbaum, N., et al.: Acta Mat. 55, 2007, 2707) and up to 50% (M. Okuno et al: Mat. Sci. Forum, 2010 , 654-656). For a maximum elongation of the composite in addition to a matrix material with a very low modulus of elasticity, a high degree of filling is necessary (S. Weiss, Diploma thesis TU-Dresden, 2009).

And also advantageously, the voids, cracks and open pores of the bulk shape memory material are more than 50% by volume, more preferably 60-90% by volume, and most preferably more than 90% by volume.
In the method of manufacturing a composite material of at least one polycrystalline shape memory material in solid form and at least one polymer, the voids, cracks, and open pores of the bulk shape memory material formed during fabrication of the shape memory material and / or by mechanical training and / or thermomechanical Load of the shape memory material have been generated before its use, at least partially filled with at least one flowable polymer.
And also advantageously, the filling of the cavities, cracks, and open pores of the bulk shape memory material is realized under gravity conditions and / or by using a vacuum.
With the present invention it becomes possible for the first time to achieve an increased degree of filling of shape memory material in a composite material and thus an increased magnetically induced elongation of the composite material. At the same time, a constant elongation over a large number of switching processes by means of a magnetic field can be achieved with the composite material according to the invention.
The composite material according to the invention can be used, for example, as an actuator or sensor material. At the same time, the disadvantages of known composites of shape memory material and polymer, which are due to a low proportion of composite metal alloy, are avoided.
Over 1% magnetically induced elongation was reproducibly measured on the composite material according to the invention. At a mechanical counter stress of 1 MPa up to 0.5% magnetically induced strain was measured. Thus, in comparison with the known polycrystalline actuator materials and the previously existing Ni-Mn-Ga polymer composites, which are comparable to the composite materials according to the invention, an increase in elongation and work done per volume could be achieved. Furthermore, constant strain values were measured on the composite according to the invention when changing the direction of the magnetic field for in each case over one million cycles. Since the production of the composite material based on the production of simple polycrystals, it is simple and reproducible with lower energy consumption and inexpensive to produce.
The composite material according to the invention consists essentially of a solid material, which is a shape memory material. This shape memory material may be both a magnetic and / or a thermal shape memory material. The massive material can also consist of several different shape memory materials. As a shape memory material according to the invention is a ferromagnetic shape memory material. The shape memory materials according to the invention are usually metallic alloys and advantageously nickel-manganese-gallium alloys are used.
As a solid material is intended to be understood in the context of this invention, a solid block, which consists entirely of at least one shape memory material. This is the starting material of the present inventive solution. During the production of such a solid block of shape memory material and also during its use, cavities, cracks and open pores in the material arise in the event of failure. This then makes the component unusable.
In order to avoid this, on the one hand, the cavities, cracks and open pores produced in the manufacture are at least partially filled with a polymer according to the invention. On the other hand, cavities, cracks and open pores can also be generated selectively, which then occur at least also at the weak points in the material. The targeted generation of cavities, cracks and open pores may have been generated by mechanical training and / or by thermo-mechanical loading of the shape memory material prior to its use. According to the invention, under thermomechanical loading, a one-time application of a compressive load, but also cooling under load, can be understood as a phase change from austenite to martensite. Any voids, cracks and open pores, however incurred, are then at least partially filled with a polymer according to the invention. This prevents a future failure in use in a component or at least delays it in time.
To fill these cavities, cracks and open pores according to the invention by a polymer at least partially, advantageously completely, the polymer used must be sufficiently fluid that it either by gravity or by other means, such as a vacuum, in the cavities, cracks and open pores can get into it.
Advantageously, the existing cavities, cracks and open pores are filled as completely as possible with polymer. According to the invention, advantageously at least 50% by volume of the cavities, cracks and open pores should be filled with polymer.
Due to the number and size of voids, cracks, and open pores in the bulk material of the shape memory material, these openings form substantially no more than 20% by volume of the entire bulk shape memory material. Thus, the polymer content of the composite material can not exceed the maximum volume of voids, cracks, and open pores in the bulk shape memory material and is thus substantially no more than 20 volume percent of the total volume of the composite.
For a much higher degree of filling of shape memory material has been achieved in the composite, compared to the solutions of the prior art.
The idea underlying the solution according to the invention is that in massive polycrystalline shape memory materials, which are advantageously fiber-textured, elastic stresses occur which hinder the movement of the twin boundaries. These elastic stresses are caused by incompatibilities at the grain boundaries. At the same time, grain boundaries are weak points that can rupture as a result of elastic stresses. At sufficiently coarsely crystalline Ni-Mn-Ga can be achieved by applying a compressive load of z. For example, 25 MPa can be generated enough elastic strain to selectively rupture those grain boundaries that previously caused the greatest obstruction. In this way, the incompatibilities are reduced and sufficient twin-bound mobility is provided to allow for magnetically-induced strain. Such incompatibilities, which rupture under elastic stresses, form voids, cracks, and open pores in the shape memory material. To slow and further prevent further rupture of these incouplings, so that the component made of the material remains mechanically stable over the intended time of use and has constant strains, a polymer is charged into the resulting cavities, cracks, and open pores.
On the one hand, the polymer used must be free-flowing to the extent that it enters the cavities, cracks and open pores either alone or by means of auxiliary agents. On the other hand, it must also have good adhesion to the shape-memory material, the lowest possible modulus of elasticity, the lowest possible fatigue during further processing and the application of the component, and have chemical and physical stability at the temperatures occurring.
The invention will be explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment.

From this alloy, 2 × 5 × 8 mm samples are prepared which undergo mechanical training by alternately subjecting the samples to mechanical compressive stresses from two sides (U. Gaitzsch, et al: Scripta Materialia 57, 6, 2007, 493) -495). This mechanical training is repeated with compressive stresses of 25 MPa until open cracks occur. Due to the manufacturing process of the samples, which consists essentially of the steps of: preparing a master alloy, remelting with subsequent directional solidification (Pötschke, M., et al; JMMM 316, 2007, 383-385), heat treatment (F. Thoss, et al All Corp. 488, 2009, 420-424), cutting, grinding and polishing, cavities and open pores may also be present in the sample.
The resulting cracks, voids and open pores are filled with a polyurethane casting resin (06872 from E. Epple & Co. GmbH) by flowing the flowable resin into the cracks, voids and open pores. Curing takes place in vacuo and at (70 ± 10) ° C. This achieves a degree of filling of cracks, voids and open pores of 80%.
The shape memory material is thus mechanically resilient, the incompatible grains can still move as freely against each other, as after the introduction of cracks, a further progression of the cracks and thus a sample failure is prevented or delayed for a long time.
Der Volumenanteil an Polyurethan beträgt 10%.Supernatant polymer material is cut off so that the shape memory material has the same dimensions as before. The volume fraction of polyurethane is 10%.
An actuator with an active element of this alloy with the filled cracks, voids, and open pores exhibits motion at room temperature due to magnetic field-induced twin boundary displacement in the active element.
