Description
The present invention relates to a method for determining the distance of an examination object from a focus of a computer tomograph and a computer tomograph, with which this method is executable.
„Field Of View”, FOV) des Röntgenröhren-Detektorsystems festgelegt. A computer tomograph (CT) for scanning an examination object comprises, as is known, at least one X-ray source with an (X-ray) focus, from which a pyramid-shaped or fan-shaped X-ray beam is directed through the examination subject, for example a patient, onto a detector system constructed from a plurality of detector elements. The fan or the pyramidal shape of the X-ray beam is typically tuned to the detector system used, so that the detector system is always completely irradiated by the X-ray beam. This also determines the field of view (FOV) of the X-ray tube detector system. Depending on the design of the CT device, the X-ray source and the detector system are, for example, mounted on a gantry or a C-arm, which are rotatable about a system axis (Z-axis). Furthermore, a storage device for the examination object is provided, which can be moved or moved along the system axis (z-axis). During the CT scan, each detector element of the detector system hit by the X-ray radiation generates a signal representing a measure of the total transparency of the examination object for the radiation emanating from the radiation source on its way to the detector system or the corresponding radiation attenuation. The set of output signals of the detector elements of the detector system, which is obtained for a specific position of the radiation source, is referred to as projection. The position of the focus, from which the X-ray beam penetrates the examination subject, is constantly changed as a result of the rotation of the gantry / C-arm. The current position of the focus or of the detector system can be specified in cylindrical coordinates (r, z, Φ) for a given system axis (Z-axis). Typically, during operation, the r coordinates of the radiation source and the associated detector system are constant. A scan of the examination subject comprises a multiplicity of projections which have been obtained at different positions of the gantry / C-arm and / or the various positions of the support. A distinction is made between sequential scanning methods and spiral scanning methods. On the basis of the (projection) measurement data generated during a scan, 2D or 3D image data from the examination object can be reconstructed by means of known methods. Furthermore, computed tomography with two or more recording systems (consisting of focus and opposite detector), so-called "dual source" or "multi-source" computed tomography known.
Modern CT scanners are also equipped with a dose automatic, which adapts the intensity of the X-ray radiation to the patient so that the dose is minimized for a required image quality. For this purpose, it must first be precisely determined how the X-ray radiation is attenuated by the patient. This so-called patient attenuation must be known along the lateral (LAT), ante-posterior (AP), and post-anterior (PA) body axes. These values can be directly measured by topograms from the corresponding directions.
So far, either two topograms are created for this, one in the LAT direction and one in the AP or PA direction, or only one topogram is created, in a direction that is defined by the examination. In the latter case, however, by analyzing the attenuation profile from the measured direction, the attenuation in the respective orthogonal direction can only be estimated. A simple method for this is, for example, measuring the lateral boundaries of the local body cross-section with the help of thresholds.
When creating two topograms, the weakening is measured in both directions, but the total examination time is longer than with just one topogram. In low-dose CT scans, such as for the lungs and intestine, the second topogram also contributes significantly to the patient's dose.
These disadvantages do not have the procedure with only one topogram, so the procedure with a topogram is preferable. However, the value of the attenuation in the direction not measured with a topogram can only be estimated, so that errors occur. One of these errors is based on the fact that, due to the fan geometry of the beam emanating from the focus, depending on the distance between the X-ray focus and the examination object, the attenuation profile is stretched or compressed in the topogram recording.
Although such a topogram (a 2D transillumination), the position and the lateral extent of the examination subject, in particular a patient can be removed. However, the topogram does not allow any statement about the distance between the examination object and the focus. For example, a narrow patient may be closer to the focus and a wider patient farther from the focus creating the identical topogram with respect to the position and lateral extent of the patient.
So far, the distance of the examination object from the focus of a computer tomograph is not explicitly determined. Rather, in practice, plausibility assumptions are essentially made for positioning the examination object in the computer tomograph. These are based in particular on an evaluation of the positioning of the storage device. In addition, the operating personnel are instructed to position the patient as centrally as possible in the field of view (FOV) of the computer tomograph.

The object of the present invention is to specify a method for determining the distance of an examination object from a focus, as well as a computer tomograph, with which such a method can be executed.
The invention results from the features of the independent claims. Advantageous developments and refinements are the subject of the dependent claims. Other features, applications and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, as well as the explanation of embodiments of the invention, which are illustrated in the figures.
The procedural part of the object is achieved by a method for determining the distance of an examination subject from a focus of a computer tomograph, comprising the following steps: emitting an X-ray radiation directed from the focus to the examination subject, detecting a scattered radiation generated by interaction of the X-radiation with the examination subject a detector, wherein the detector detects an intensity distribution of the scattered radiation, namely an intensity distribution substantially along a central beam direction of the X-ray radiation directed onto the examination subject, and determining the distance on the basis of the detected intensity distribution.
The invention is therefore based on detecting the scattered radiation produced by the interaction of the X-ray radiation emanating from the focus with the object with the detector according to the invention. The scattered radiation is deflected with respect to the X-ray radiation emanating from the focus and emerges substantially laterally from the examination subject. The present invention for detecting the scattered radiation detector is oriented and designed so that with him a spatially resolved intensity distribution of the scattered radiation along the central beam direction, the X-ray emanating from the focus can be detected. In the case of the fan beam typically emitted by the focus, the central ray direction is the boundary rays: β Z -β and β Z + β, where β indicates half the fan angle, the direction of the beam with the angle β Z.
The detector for detecting the stray radiation is not the detector opposite the focus, which is used to detect the attenuation of the X-ray radiation when passing through the examination subject, but a further offset, preferably offset by 90 °, arranged detector. In so-called "dual-source" computed tomography, d. H. in CT systems with two recording systems (recording system: focus and oppositely arranged detector) can take over the function of the scattered beam detector for the focus of the first recording system, the detector of the second recording system, especially if it is arranged offset substantially 90 ° to the detector of the first recording system.
For determining the distance of the examination object from the focus, the maximum of the detected intensity distribution, in particular its position on the detector along the central beam direction, is preferably determined. The position of the maximum depends on the distance of the examination object from the focus, so that it is possible to deduce the distance from the determined position of the maximum.
It is assumed that the focus and the detector for detecting the scattered radiation have a known and temporally constant relative arrangement. It is also conceivable that the detector for detecting the scattered radiation and the focus do not exhibit a time-constant relative arrangement, so that in this case the relative arrangement of focus and detector must be known at least at the time of detection of the intensity distribution.
Since the scattered beam distribution also depends on the energy of the X-ray radiation, the determination of the distance is preferably carried out taking into account the energy of the X-ray radiation.
In a particularly preferred development of the method according to the invention, a look-up table is provided from which the distance results for determined positions of intensity maxima along the central beam axis. In one embodiment, the look-up table additionally takes into account the energy of the X-ray radiation.
Overall, the method allows a comparison with the prior art more accurate or reliable parameterization of the automatic dosing of a computer tomograph with only one topogram recording. In particular, the determination according to the invention of the distance of the examination subject from the focus permits a considerable reduction in the initially mentioned extension or compression of the weakening profile in the topogram recording.
The device part of the object is achieved by a computer tomograph, which is a focus from which an X-ray directed to an examination object can be emitted, a detector with which a generated by interaction of the X-ray radiation with the examination object scattered radiation is detectable, wherein the detector has an intensity distribution the scattered radiation is detected, namely an intensity distribution substantially along a central ray direction of the X-ray radiation directed onto the examination subject, and an analysis device with which the distance of the examination subject from the focus on the basis of the detected intensity distribution can be determined.
Preferred developments of the computer tomograph result from the transmission and analogous application of the features disclosed above in connection with the method according to the invention.
