Description
The invention relates to new, high-performance PLOT columns with MOF coating for gas analysis and to methods and apparatus for their production.
In gas chromatography (GC), a gaseous or vaporized vapor mixture from the outset is admixed with a carrier gas stream, usually comprising hydrogen, argon, carbon dioxide or helium, and passed through a chromatographic column. This column contains the so-called stationary phase.
Für die Detektion der Komponenten gibt es verschiedene Methoden (WLD, FID, MS).A distinction is made between two types of columns: columns packed with a porous material and columns whose inside is coated with the stationary phase. The latter are usually performed as capillaries with diameters in the range of a few tenths of a millimeter. In the case of the coated columns, a distinction is again made between capillaries whose coating consists of a viscous polymeric film (WCT), capillaries whose coating consists of a liquid phase applied to a carrier material (Support Coated Open Tubular, SCOT) and capillaries coated with a porous material (Porous Layer Open Tubular, PLOT). As column material for the mentioned types of capillary columns, amorphous quartz (fused silica) with a stabilizing outer polyimide layer has become established. All column types have in common that the separation of the substance mixture takes place at this stationary phase by interactions that are different for each component and that the individual components are separated in time (with different retention time) from the outlet of the capillary and can be detected separately. For the detection of the components there are different methods (WLD, FID, MS).
Different boiling points, which are responsible for the separation when using WCOT columns, are barely noticeable when trying to separate permanent gases. Furthermore, the capacity of a WCOT column is quickly exhausted by the short retention time of volatile components. This means that the components which elute within a short time can no longer be detected sufficiently separated from one another. In addition, the analyzability of a chromatogram is greatly limited by peak distortion. In the case of PLOT columns, on the other hand, the separation takes place due to the frequently repeated interaction of an eluting molecule with the porosity-enhanced surface of the stationary phase. This allows both the separation of permanent gases, as well as increases the capacity. The use of SCOT columns offers advantages only for components that are too strongly retained in PLOT columns. Compared to the packed columns, which also contain porous stationary phases, PLOT columns have the advantage of low flow resistance with a small diameter and a large possible column length, whereby a significantly higher resolution with a short retention time (high efficiency) can be achieved. In commercial PLOT columns, an increased surface area is achieved by deposition of alumina, kieselguhr, molecular sieves and / or various salts, which is carried out in such a way that a porous structure is formed. Typically, in commercial PLOT columns, the stationary phase is retained only by weak electrostatic forces in the column, resulting in the slow discharge of stationary phase particles. This so-called bleed of the column has a short life and leads to "particle spikes" in the chromatograms, which must be countered with costly particulate filters. Since the beginning of the 2000s, Agilent has been launching so-called "bonded porous polymer" columns, which partially mitigate this disadvantage. However, the type of anchoring of the stationary phase is not disclosed. All the purely inorganic or purely organic stationary phases mentioned above have the disadvantage that physical and chemical limits are set by further increasing their efficiency by increasing the porosity
Typically, the walls of the pores are only one atomic layer thick. The porosity achievable with MOFs thereby exceeds the porosity of all other ordered ( periodic pore-containing materials). To date, a specific surface area of up to 10,400 m 2 / g has been achieved by MOFs (MOF-210, H. Furukawa, N. Ko, YB Go, N. Aratani, SB Choi, E. Choi, AO Yazaydin, RQ Snurr, M O'Keeffe, J. Kim, OM Yaghi, Science, 2010, 239, 424-428) while the potential of zeolites is exhausted at about 900 m 2 / g for zeolite Y. These highly porous MOF compounds are of interest as potential gas storage materials in the use of alternative energies and as natural gas storage materials.

4 bis 7.According to the invention the object is achieved by a PLOT column for gas chromatography from a quartz glass capillary and a method and an apparatus for their preparation according to the features of
The inventive PLOT column for gas chromatography with a quartz glass capillary has an inner surface with a layer of grown MOF crystallites.
In this case, the inner surface is modified with spacer molecules, wherein the spacer molecules are connected by means of an anchor group with the inner surface of the quartz glass capillary and by means of a head group with the MOF crystallites so that the head groups on the inner surface facing metal oxide clusters of MOF crystallites.
The MOF crystallites are compounds of the general formula M w O x (OH) y B z with 3 ≦ w ≦ 8, with 1 ≦ x ≦ 4, with 0 ≦ y ≦ 6, with 2 ≦ z ≦ 6, where M is a Metal and B is an at least ditopic anion having at least 2 functional groups and at least 2 donor atoms selected from O, N, S, P.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the grown-up layer consists of compounds of the general formula M x O y B z , where M is a metal, 3 ≤ x ≤ 8, 1 ≤ y ≤ 4, B is an at least ditopic anion with at least 2 functional groups and at least 4 donor atoms selected from O, N, S, P and wherein 2 <z <6.
The MOF krsitallites are microcrystals of MOF compounds consisting of SBUs (secondary building units) composed of inorganic metal oxide clusters and coordinated organic functional groups, and organic linker molecules that transform the SBUs into a periodic framework of strong bonds with permanent porosity network.
The MOF crystallites are connected via a layer of flexible organic spacer molecules, which by means of specific anchor groups with the quartz glass surface by covalent bonds and head groups to the metal oxide clusters on the inner surface facing crystal surfaces of the MOF crystallites.
In addition to the multipoint adhesion of the MOF crystallites, the grown MOF crystallites are fused together by twin or multiple formation or penetration (catenation).
The adhesion of the grown MOF crystallites is very high due to their attachment to the head groups of the spacer molecules and due to the coalescence of the MOF crystallites among each other.
An advantage of the coating of MOF crystallites according to the invention is the very uniform size distribution. At least 80% of the crystallites have an edge length which deviates by a maximum of 20% from the mean of the size distribution, which is not to be expected for a coating on quartz glass. It is also advantageous that the crystallites are so strongly associated with the surface and also with each other that they can not be removed by a strong gas flow.
The thickness of the coating is in the range of 0.5 to 5 microns and thus in the range of 0.1 to 2 percent of the clear diameter of the capillary.
Owing to the high porosity of the MOF crystallites and their stable arrangement on the inside of the quartz glass capillaries, the PLOT columns according to the invention are outstandingly suitable for gas chromatography and moreover have a long service life.
- a) modifying the inner surface of a GC quartz glass capillary to create functional groups on its surface,
- b) coating the thus modified inner surface with spacer molecules having an anchor group and a head group,
- c) multiple alternating coating with an SBU precursor solution comprising compounds of the general formula M w O x (OH) y A z where 3 ≦ w ≦ 8, with 1 ≦ x ≦ 4, with 0 ≦ y ≦ 6, with 2 ≦ z ≤12, wherein M is a metal ion and A is an at least monotopic anion having at least one functional group, and a linker solution containing an at least ditopic organic compound for growing MOF crystallites and their connection with the head groups of the spacer molecules,
- d) removal of residual solution.
The process according to the invention makes it possible for the highly porous MOF crystallites to be firmly bound to the quartz glass surface by using a maximum number of attachment sites via the spacer molecules and to form a solid coating of grown MOF crystallites grown together and mutually intertwined.
The method is characterized in that the head groups of the spacer molecules facing away from the surface are reacted with a solution of an SBU precursor. The fact that ideally each spacer molecule binds an SBU precursor results in a very high density of precursors on the surface. In the following step, a solution of the linker substance is used, whereby a cross-linking of the SBUs takes place with one another and binding sites for further precursor molecules arise. The following alternating rinsing steps of precursor and linker solution lead to the growth of the crystalline MOF compounds.
The transition between amorphous and crystalline solids is made possible by the flexibility of the spacer molecules on the one hand and the rigidity of the MOF linker molecules on the other hand. In addition to the multi-point adhesion of the crystallites, the lack of space on the surface leads to intergrowth of the crystallites with each other, whereby the mechanical strength of the layer is further increased.
After step a, functional groups, preferably hydroxyl groups, are generated on the inner surface of a GC quartz glass capillary. Advantageously, the surface is degreased and activated with an aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide.
The thus modified inner surface is coated after step b with a solution of spacer molecules.
Preferred for coating the modified surface are spacer molecules of alkenyl compounds having at least 4 carbon atoms, with one anchor group and one terminal double bond, wherein the anchor group is selected from -SiX 3 , -BX 2 , -BeX, -GeX 3 , -SnX 3 , -PX 2 , -PX 4 , -AsX 2 , -AsX 4 , -SbX 2 , -SbX 4 , -CX 3 , preferably -SiX 3 , wherein X represents any halide, preferably Cl, which during the anchoring by oxygen atoms of the functional groups the quartz glass surface can be replaced. After anchoring with the functional groups generated according to step a, the head group, for example a carboxylate, pyrazolate, mercaptate head group is produced by reaction with suitable compounds.
Bevorzugt sind die Spacermoleküle ausgewählt aus Butenyl-, Pentenyl-, Hexenyl-, Heptenyl-, Octenyl-, Nonenyl-, Decenyl-, Undecenyl-, Dodecenyl-, Tridecenyl-, Tetradecenyl-, Pentadecenyl-, Hexadecenyl-, Heptadecenyl-, Octadecenyl-, Nonadecenyl-, Icosenyltrichlorsilan. The spacer molecules are preferably selected from butenyl, pentenyl, hexenyl, heptenyl, octenyl, nonenyl, decenyl, undecenyl, dodecenyl, tridecenyl, tetradecenyl, pentadecenyl, hexadecenyl, heptadecenyl, octadecenyl , Nonadecenyl, icosenyltrichlorosilane.

- A for an anchor group is selected from -SiX 3 , -BX 2 , -BeX, -GeX 3 , -SnX 3 , -PX 2 , -PX 4 , -AsX 2 , -AsX 4 , -SbX 2 , -SbX 4 , -CX 3 , preferably -SiX 3 with X = halide, preferably chloride,
- R is an alkyl radical having at least 4 carbon atoms,
The head groups can be carboxyl (after the oxidation of the terminal double bond) pyrazole and mercapto groups, primary (-NH 2 ), secondary (-NHR) and tertiary (-NR 2 ) amino groups, and nitrogen-containing rings such as pyridine, or phosphate groups (- O-PO 3 H 2 ) and phosphonate groups (-PO 3 H 2 ).
Es folgt die alternierende Behandlung mit Precursor- und LinkerlösungBy using sufficiently flexible spacer molecules, an orderly growth is achieved by first binding molecules of a soluble SBU precursor to the head groups of the spacer molecules. In a second step, the SBUs are crosslinked by the reaction with a solution containing the linker B and simultaneously created connection points for other SBU precursors. As a result of this crosslinking, the transition from the initially disordered arrangement of the spacer molecules to a periodic arrangement suitable for the symmetry of the MOF lattice takes place. This is followed by the alternating treatment with precursor and linker solution

In the analysis unit, consisting of two glass flasks, located in the upper glass flask, a quartz glass piece, which is pretreated analogous to the capillary and in that it is exposed to the same sequence of reagents as the capillary as well as this is coated. This surface, coated analogously to the capillary, serves to determine the coating success on the surface because it is easier to access than the interior of the capillary. In addition, the pressure compensation during the coating takes place via this glass bulb. Via a tap, this glass flask is connected to another glass flask, which serves to collect the reaction solutions. There it comes to reaction under precipitation with reaction of the residual concentrations of precursor and linker solution. This precipitate can be examined by X-ray powder diffraction, indicating the success of MOF coating within the capillary.

The usual criteria efficiency (minimum analysis time), chromatographic resolution and selectivity (number of separable components per time interval) of a PLOT column are, because they are in opposite directions, only conditionally to classify the difference between the two columns. Thus, an increase in the efficiency in principle leads to a reduction in resolution and selectivity. The comparison of two PLOT columns using the same conditions is not permissible, but the PLOT columns must be compared in each case optimal conditions.
In the example given here, the condition of the shortest possible analysis time was selected for both PLOT columns, in which all components are still safely separated. This criterion is appropriate for the typical field of application of PLOT columns, the routine testing of natural gas quality and process analysis every minute.
In
It could thus be shown that a PLOT column which has been MOF-coated by means of the method according to the invention has in some cases superior performance in terms of separation efficiency, chromatographic resolution and selectivity in comparison with a commercial Al 2 O 3 PLOT column. This is all the more remarkable as the commercial column alone, due to its effective length of 15 m, should be superior to the 10 m long MOF-coated column. Surprisingly, this is not the case.
