Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for generating an image data record by means of a radial scanning of a raw data space with the aid of a magnetic resonance system, wherein unintentional time delays of the gradient fields to be generated are corrected. Moreover, the present invention relates to a correspondingly configured magnetic resonance system.
Usually, in magnetic resonance tomography, a raw data space (also known as a measurement space or K space) is scanned line by line. However, other scanning patterns are also known, and in particular the radial scanning along spokes (i.e., lines passing through the K-space center) has gained increasing interest in recent years. Radial scanning offers several advantages, such as reduced motion sensitivity or the ability to scan with ultrashort echo times (UTE). Radial scanning is a well-known technique from the early days of magnetic resonance imaging, although it has not been widely adopted. This is primarily due to inherent technical difficulties that arise in the transition of Abtasttrajektorie along parallel lines on opposite, overlapping spokes.
”Centering the Projection Reconstruction Trajectory: Reducing Gradient Delay Errors”, D. C. Peters u. a., Magnetic Resonance in Medicine 50: 1–6 (2003) beschreibt die Konstruktion von radialen Trajektorien. Dabei werden Zeitverzögerungen eines Gradienten mit Phantomen gemessen und die Trajektorien bezüglich dieser Zeitverzögerungen korrigiert."Centering the Projection Reconstruction Trajectory: Reducing Gradient Delay Errors", D. C. Peters et al. a., Magnetic Resonance in Medicine 50: 1-6 (2003) describes the construction of radial trajectories. In this case, time delays of a gradient with phantoms are measured and the trajectories are corrected with respect to these time delays.

A core problem is the time delays of the gradient fields generated during the scan, which lead to a deviation between the assumed and the actually sampled coordinate of the Fourier transform (that is to say in K space). In the case of conventional line-by-line scanning, these deviations are irrelevant since in this case all the lines are shifted equally with respect to the read-out direction. Due to the shift characteristic of the Fourier transformation (shift theorem), this shift leads to a linear phase modulation of the object in image space in the line-by-line scanning. However, since usually only the magnitude values (and not the phase) are considered in the imaging, the line modulation in line-by-line sampling will not have any effect on the displayed image.
In the radial scan, the gradient delays also result in a linear phase modulation of the sampled components in the image space. However, since the read-out direction for each spoke differs from the read-out direction of any other spoke, any different phase modulation of the contained spatial information results. This different phase modulation leads to partially strong image artifacts by interference effects, which significantly reduce the diagnostic value of radial scan generated MR images.
According to the prior art, there are no precise and conclusive findings on the physical causes of the gradient delays. A major influence seems to be due to the design-related response behavior of gradient coils, since the observed gradient delays are mostly anisotropic, i. H. the gradient delay of the gradient coil in the x-direction differs from the gradient delay of the gradient coil in the y-direction. In addition, the gradient delays depend on the selected readout speed or bandwidth ("bandwidth"), which might indicate amplitude dependency or delays due to the digitizer hardware. Finally, there seems to be an influence of eddy current effects as well as the system adjustment (shim settings).

In the second method, the expected time shift is estimated and, depending on this, the moment of the dephasing gradient is adjusted such that the actual echo time (sampling of the original position of the frequency space) coincides with the assumed echo time. This method is described in "Centering the Proection Reconstruction Trajectory: Reducing Gradient Delay Errors"; D.C. Peters, J.A. Derbyshire, E.R. McVeigh, Magn Reson Med. 50 (1): pp. 1-6, where the delay is determined for a fixed measurement protocol with a one-time calibration measurement.
In ”Robust radial imaging with predetermined isotropic gradient delay correction, P. Speier, F. Trautwein, Proc. Intl. Soc. Mag. Reson. Intl. Soc. Mag. Reson. Med. 14 (2006) p. 2379, the expected deceleration is determined on the basis of a linear model, so that it is not necessary to carry out a new calibration when the measurement parameters change. In practice, however, it has been shown that the corresponding correction is not sufficient since the causative effects seem to be system-dependent, adjustment-dependent and in some cases also patient-dependent. Therefore, the resulting image quality is not sufficient for clinical use, especially for morphological examinations.
The present invention therefore has the object better to correct gradient delays in a radial scan, as is possible in the prior art.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by a method for generating an image data set by means of a radial scanning of the raw data space with the aid of a magnetic resonance system according to claim 1, by a magnetic resonance system according to
In the context of the present invention, a method for producing an image data set with a radial scan by means of a magnetic resonance system is shown. The process comprises the following steps:
For one or more predetermined spokes, one or more calibration measurements are performed in each case. In each calibration measurement, a gradient moment difference between an assumed and an actually applied gradient moment along the respective spoke is determined. Since the assumed or actually applied gradient moment corresponds to the assumed or actually sampled sampling point in frequency space, the gradient moment difference at any time determines the pixel shift resulting from the gradient delay between the assumed sampling point and the actual sampling point in K-space or frequency space.
Subsequently, all the spokes of a predetermined raw data space are read out, wherein a plurality of magnetic field gradients in each one spatial direction (i.e., two magnetic field gradients for reading one layer or three magnetic field gradients for reading out a three-dimensional space segment) are switched to respectively acquire sampling points of a respective spoke.
After reading out the corresponding sampling point, the position of each sampling point of each spoke is corrected depending on the gradient moment difference. For this purpose, the assumed position of the respective sampling point, which is defined by the respectively switched magnetic field gradients, is shifted by the gradient moment difference.
The inventive method enables a practical use of a radial scan, since the unwanted temporal delays of the generated gradient fields are corrected in the determination of the actual position of the respective sampling point.
- 1. The gradient moment difference is determined only on the basis of exactly one predetermined spoke. For this purpose, any spoke can be selected; however, the spoke will usually be chosen in the direction of the two or three gradient coils.
- 2. The gradient moment difference is determined based on a plurality of predetermined spokes. As a rule, the number of predetermined spokes in this possibility corresponds to the number of magnetic field gradients or gradient coils, with one of these two or three spokes each extending in the direction of the respective magnetic field gradient or in the direction of the respective gradient coil. However, it is also possible that the number of predetermined spokes exceeds the number of magnetic field gradients or gradient coils. In this option, the gradient moment difference is calculated as the average of those gradient moment differences that have been determined for the predetermined spokes.
- 3. The number of predetermined spokes by which the gradient moment difference is determined corresponds to the number of magnetic field gradients or gradient coils. In each case, one of these two or three spokes extends in the direction of the respective magnetic field gradient or the respective gradient coil. A gradient moment difference is determined for each spoke, so that the gradient moment difference is virtually composed of two or three components.
While
In other words, in this embodiment, the assumed position of each sampling point is shifted by the gradient moment difference along the spoke on which the sampling point is located.
By the following equation (3), the gradient torque difference GMD can be converted into a pixel shift PV.
B., dass das Echozentrum 2 Sampleabstände neben der angenommenen Echoposition liegt.N stands for the number of sampling points along a spoke and k ' max for the maximum assumed gradient moment. The delay is thus determined in the form of a pixel or sample shift. A pixel shift PV of 2 means z. Example, that the
Demnach lässt sich Δk durch folgende Gleichung (6) berechnen: In this case, k max stands for a maximum gradient moment corrected by the gradient moment difference, i stands for the respective index of the sampling position (ie i runs from 0 to N) and Δk is the difference between the gradient moment of a sampling point and the gradient moment of that sampling point which directly adjoins it is. Thus Δk can be calculated by the following equation (6):
If equations (4) to (7) are used to determine the positions of the sampling points in K-space, the measurement data acquired at the corresponding sampling points are assigned to grid positions which approximate the actual frequency space positions at sampling time, i.e. H. Gradient delays are taken into account or corrected.
The previously described procedures with which the corrected positions of the sampling points are determined apply to a two-dimensional radial scan. Of course, a three-dimensional radial scan is possible. In this case, three equations are needed to determine the coordinates k x , k y , k z . Equation (7) remains valid for an isotropic correction.
An embodiment according to the invention for determining the gradient moment difference along one of the predetermined spokes will be described below. For this purpose, a first signal S 0 (t) along this spoke in a predetermined direction (there are only two possibilities for this direction, namely the execution and the return direction along the spoke) is read out over a predetermined distance of this spoke. In addition, a second signal S 180 (t) is read out along this spoke in a direction opposite to the predetermined direction (ie in the other direction) over the same distance.
With N equal to the number of samples (i.e., t = 0, 1, ..., N-1) on the corresponding spoke, in this case on the x-axis.
In other words, since both the first signal S 0 (t) and the further second signal S ' 180 (t) are delayed, the echo delay or pixel shift PV results from the half pixel offset between the first signal S 0 (t) and the further second signal S ' 180 (t).
To determine the pixel shift PV from the calibration measurements, a cross-correlation analysis is performed, as described below.
Depending on this function g (x), the gradient moment difference with respect to this spoke can now be determined.
According to a first approach according to the invention, the inverse Fourier transformation of g (x) is determined for this, yielding the cross-correlation function of S 0 (t) and S ' 180 (t). A distance between the position of the maximum of this cross-correlation function invFT (g (x)) and the k-space center corresponds to twice the
Geraden ergibt sich dann die Pixelverschiebung PV gemäß der folgenden Gleichung (11).According to a second inventive approach, the slope of the phase profile of g (x) is determined. For a simple (i.e., similar deceleration along the spoke) this phase curve is purely linear. However, since the measuring space is usually larger than the measuring object, the phase of g (x) is determined only within the measuring object. In order to take this fact into account, the absolute maximum of g (x) is determined in a first step. Starting from this maximum, an interval is determined such that the amount of g (x) in this interval, in which the maximum is also located, is never less than a predetermined magnitude threshold value. In this case, this amount threshold value is a predetermined percentage (eg 5%) smaller than the maximum amount. Within this interval, a linear function is then fitted (fitted) to the phase course of g (x), for example with a linear compensation calculation. From the slope S of the linear function or straight line, the pixel shift PV then results according to the following equation (11).
With the aid of equation (3), the gradient torque difference GMD along the spoke can be determined therefrom according to the following equation (12).
In order to perform anisotropic correction of the delay according to the invention, in a two-dimensional radial scan, a calibration measurement along the x-axis for determining the gradient moment difference GMD x along the x-axis and a calibration measurement along the y-axis for determining the gradient moment difference GMD y along the y -Axis performed. In the case of a three-dimensional radial scan, a calibration measurement along the z-axis for determining the gradient torque difference GMD z along the z-axis would additionally have to be carried out. Equation (3) allows the corresponding gradient moment difference GMD x , GMD y or GMD z to be simply converted into the corresponding pixel displacement PV x , PV y or PV z . For the anisotropic correction, the equation (7) is replaced by the following equation (13).
Using equations (4) and (5), the anisotropically corrected position of the corresponding sampling point can then be determined taking into account equation (13).
However, it is also possible from the assumed position (k 'x, k' y) of the respective sampling point depends on the Gradientenmomentdifferenzen GMD x and GMD y along the x-axis and the y-axis, the corrected position (k x, k y ) of the sampling point according to the following equations (14) and (15).
An anisotropic gradient delay may cause spokes generated by a superposition of the X and Y gradients (and possibly with the Z-gradient superimposed in the three-dimensional case) offset from the K-space center. This shift from the K-space center can be corrected by the embodiments described in advance with Equations (13) to (15).
The execution of the calibration measurements for the determination of the gradient moment differences or pixel shifts can be carried out in a preparation phase of the actual MR measurement. Especially with gradient echo-based measurement sequences which use a short repetition time (eg 3D FLASH or 2D FLASH), it is usually necessary to perform so-called "prep-shots" before recording the actual measurement data, so that the magnetization within the measurement object is brought into a state of equilibrium. These preparatory measurements are particularly important for radial sequences, since all spokes contribute equally important information (measurement data) to the overall result, so that the information gathered on the first spokes information for the overall result are important. If no preparatory measurements (prep-shots) are carried out, the signal strength in the measurements of the first spokes is too high due to the not yet present saturation of the magnetization in the test object, which leads to so-called smearing artifacts.
For example, with 200 prep shots, 100 gradient moment differences along a spoke can be calculated. Since, in a two-dimensional radial scan, essentially only the spokes along the x-gradient coil and along the y-gradient coil are of interest, the gradient moment difference along the x-axis and the gradient moment difference along the y-axis can each be determined 50 times. The final gradient moment difference along the x-axis and the final gradient moment difference along the y-axis are then calculated by averaging. For this purpose, on the one hand, it is possible to average the detected signals (eg S 0 (t), S 180 (t)) and then to determine the final gradient moment difference on the basis of these averaged signals. The other possibility consists in determining the respective gradient moment difference from in each case two corresponding signals (for example S 0 (t), S 180 (t)) and then extracting from these z. B. 50 gradient torque differences to determine the final Gradientmomentdifferenz averaging.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, any previously described feature of the method of the present invention may be combined with the previously described method of precompensating the gradient delay by adjusting the moment of the pre-emphasis gradient (see D.C. Peters and others, or P. Speier and others). The present invention then corrects in particular those delays of the gradient fields, which are still present despite the adapted pre-emphasis gradient.

In the context of the present invention, a magnetic resonance system for generating an image data record by means of a radial scan is also provided. The magnetic resonance system corrects one position each Scanning point of each spoke depending on the Gradientmomentdifferenz by the magnetic resonance system shifts a assumed based on the respectively switched magnetic field gradient position of the respective sampling point by the gradient moment difference.

For a three-dimensional radial scan, the spokes a would also pass through the same center. In this case, however, the spokes are not in a plane, but are arranged so that their ends lie on a kind of spherical surface, wherein the center is the center of the associated ball.

In step S1, so-called prep-shots are performed to bring the magnetization within the measurement object in an equilibrium state. In these prep-shots, the gradient moment differences between an assumed and an actually applied gradient moment, for example, for the spokes lying on the x-axis and on the y-axis, are multipled. Example by means of the equations (8) to (11) described inventive approach.
In step S2, a plurality of sampling points are scanned along one of the spokes a. Subsequently, the position of each read sampling point is corrected by the gradient moment difference (s) determined in step S1. This correction is carried out in particular with an inventive approach described by equations (1) to (7) and (13) to (15).
In step S4 it is checked whether all sampling points in the measuring space have already been detected, ie. H. whether all sampling points of all spokes have been read out. If this is not the case (NO at step S4), the method returns to step S2, in which still missing sample points of an already sampled spoke or sampling points of another as yet unsampled spoke a are read out. If all the sampling points have already been detected (yes at step S4), the process ends.
